Finding Love Without Losing Yourself (Single AF Series) – with Mandy Hale For singles looking for love, the dating scene can be a doozy. Online dating is at an all-time high, and while many singles are out here interviewing spouses, others are quite content in “situationships” that lead to nowhere. The Single Woman, herself, Mandy Hale is on the podcast today and wants to help you singles to find love without losing yourself. Her latest book, Don’t Believe the Swipe: Finding Love Without Losing Yourself isn’t just a dating manual; it’s a self-love manual for single people. Mandy is a New York Times Best-Selling author and social media powerhouse. She has appeared on Oprah’s Lifeclass Tour, spoken at Women of Faith and TD Jake’s Woman Thou Art Loosed! Mandy shares candid dating stories that will leave you bewildered at the brazenness of some of her suitors. But she seems to take it all in stride. She’s been doing this dating thing long enough to know that not every connection is a love connection, and she’s okay with that. Mandy reminds us that dating is supposed to be fun; it’s supposed to be a way of learning about people and yourself. Thus, she knows how to help singles recover from the constant pressure of what she calls “the swipe.” Don’t Believe the Swipe Mandy explains that the swipe is the incessant pressure put on singles to measure their worth by their relationship status. If a single woman is worried about why she isn’t being matched with more people on the online dating apps, or if a single man is focused on the next woman while in a relationship with someone else, they’re believing the swipe. Dating can be very superficial, and singles can find themselves getting too caught up in their heads, wondering why they’re being ghosted or rejected. They can internalize other people’s reactions to the point of beginning to feel negative about themselves. Dating isn’t just about being matched with someone. It’s about learning to love yourself and being confident in who you are. That’s what finding love without losing yourself is all about. Reclaiming the Joy of the Single Life We’ve talked about finding joy in the single life on other podcast episodes, namely the episode on In-Between Relationships. There is nothing wrong with being single. Not. One. Thing. Instead of constantly searching for “the one,” Mandy encourages singles to focus on being the one, but not for someone else. Be the one for you. Enjoy this stage of your life. Cherish it. The Apostle Paul says in I Corinthians 7:7, “Sometimes I wish everyone were single like me—a simpler life in many ways! But celibacy is not for everyone any more than marriage is. God gives the gift of the single life to some, the gift of the married life to others” (The Message). Churches can help singles to feel more comfortable and connected, and both Many and I had some great ways to make this happen. The Intimidation Factor If you are a successful, confident, single woman, you’ve maybe heard a man tell you that you’re “intimidating.” Mandy dedicates and entire chapter in her book to this topic, and we also addressed it at length on the podcast. In a nutshell, a guy telling a girl she’s intimidating is an excuse. “If a guy is truly meant for you, nothing is going to be able to keep him away,” Mandy says. With that in mind, it should take some of the pressure off of finding love. Ladies, you are not too much. You do not need to dumb yourself down, dim your light, or commit any other acts of sacrifice against yourself. If a man can’t handle your awesomeness, tell him to keep it moving. This was a great conversation with Mandy, and I’m grateful to have had her on the show! Started as Negro History Week (1926) 44. Woodson (@ age 51) announced the second week of February to be "Negro History Week" because it covered the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Woodson said teaching black history was essential to ensure physical and 45. intellectual survival. - "If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated. The American Indian left no continuous record. He did not appreciate the value of 46. tradition; and where is he today? The Hebrew keenly appreciated the value of tradition, as is attested by the Bible itself. Despite worldwide persecution, therefore, he is a great factor in our civilization." 47. The push for Black History Month (1970 -76) 48. BHM was first proposed at Kent State University in February 1969. The first celebration happened in 1970. Six years later, President Gerald Ford recognized BHM during the Bicentennial celebration. - "[Americans should] seize the opportunity to honor the 49. too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history". 50. Who: Yvette Marie Steven, a.k.a., Chaka Khan (@ age 23) - Queen of Funk, singer, songwriter, actor, activist. 90. Why is she being featured: "Sweet Thing", she is breaking out, and I don't want to cover disco yet. 91. Short story: 92. Born and raised in Chicago housing projects, the oldest of five. Started singing early, formed a girl group at age eleven. Changed her name to Chaka Adunne Aduffe Hodarhi Karifi at thirteen and started running around with the Fred Hampton and the Panthers. In 1969, at age16, she dropped out of high school, left the Panthers, and focused on singing with local bands. In 1973, she joined the band Rufus. The first album in 1973 was a dud, but Stevie Wonder was so impressed by Chaka Khan's vocals, he wanted to write a song specifically for her. "Tell Me Something Good", written by Stevie, on their 1974 album won a Grammy. (He also played harmonica on 'I Feel For You'.). But, because of her increasing popularity the record label started calling the group Rufus "Featuring" Chaka Khan, (which was the title of their fourth album that had the hit single "Sweet Thing") and this caused tension in the band. She was back and forth with the group for a few years. Went solo in 1978 and became a legend. (10 Grammys, 8 of them solo) 93. [Audio Clip] 94. Open Comments: 95. Movie Scene 96. Notable releases 97. Why is it featured: The Soundtrack is DOPE!! 106. Short Story: An episodic comedy about a day in the lives of the employees and the owner of a Los Angeles car wash. 107. Critic Review: "Car Wash initially left critics unimpressed (except for Roger Ebert who correctly called it a "wash-and-wax M*A*S*H") but over the decades both the film and the soundtrack have left their mark on pop culture. With its Afros, bell-bottoms, cars as big as boats, and disco soundtrack, Car Wash is a perfect time-capsule of America's bicentennial year." - http://www.threemoviebuffs.com/review/car-wash.html 108. Why is it featured: The last show dedicated to black families until(?) The Cosby Show in 1984. The next few years introduced the interracial family dynamic. (Different Strokes like stuff.) 114. Short Story: Loosely based on Cooley High. What's Happening!! follows the lives of three working-class African-American teens living in Watts. 115. Critic Review: Unlike its contemporary Good Times, What's Happening!! isn't committed to presenting enlightening social commentary or providing empowering African-American role models. Most of the problems the gang faces here are typical of what kids from any community have to deal with. While the show has its funny moments (especially when Dee offers her strong, often sarcastic opinions), much of the show's humor stems from a slapstick-like comedy style that's reminiscent of the minstrel show stereotypes of the 1930s - https://www.commonsensemedia.org/tv-reviews/whats-happening 116. From 2012: Actress Sharon Leal is a woman loosed… and on the verge. A review of the one-time "Guiding Light" star’s recent credits support this, with ever more visible roles. That was her in two Tyler Perry movies, Why Did I Get Married and its sequel. And she’s been all over TV, including runs on “Boston Public,” “Private Practice,” “Hellcats” and two episodes of one of my recent favorites, USA’s “Suits.” Since this interview, she recurs on "Supergirl" and has a lead in "Instinct" w

Our guest today is Pastor Van Moody. Van is a member of Dr. Mehmet Oz’s core team, is an associate trainer for Dr. John Maxwell’s EQUIP leadership organization and pastor at The Worship Center in Birmingham, AL. According to Van Moody, having a strong I-factor is the cornerstone to a successful life. One question lies behind every struggle we face. And in his new book, The I-Factor: How Building A Great Relationship with Yourself is the Key to a Happy, Successful Life (November 22, Thomas Nelson), Moody challenges readers to get in tune with the core issues holding them back from the next level. Moody identifies the three dynamics that are essential to winning the battle in life: identity, significance and perspective. When you understand your identity, you know who you are, which sets the foundation for everything else. When you understand your significance, you see the purpose and greatness you were created for. And when you understand perspective, you can view the problems you face as stepping-stones to greatness, rather than stumbling blocks.
