As a Yemeni-American navigating the cultural maze of an immigrant household in Dallas, Texas, Ahmed brings his striking goofy charm to tales that span the spectrum of life's absurdities from taking mushrooms at a Lizzo concert and playing Taboo with his brothers to the comedic nuances of dual cultural identities. Writing this material involved mining my own life for humorous anecdotes, embracing vulnerability, and finding the universal truths in the specifics of my experiences.”    Ahmed Al-kadri is a Yemeni-American comedian based in LA. As a young child in Dallas, Ahmed dreamed of being an accountant, but his immigrant parents forced him to be a comedian instead. Ahmed started developing his comedy skills early, doing impressions of his mom's Turkish soap operas and Mr. Bean, as well as spot-on imitations of his sister and brothers.  Ahmed's father was an extrovert who loved to help people. Ahmed credits this as one of the reasons he relates so well to everyone- his house was always full of visitors who his parents were hosting; often offering a place to sleep if it was needed. Consequently, Ahmed was one of those kids who was friends with everybody, memorizing one-liners from his dad and trying them out on the kids at school the next day. Between go-kart races and soccer with his five siblings, Ahmed had a classic American childhood, playing “ding-dong ditch” and throwing Taco Bell sauce packets at cars.    He started his career in 2016 taking an improv class at Dallas Comedy House and has been hooked ever since. He has performed in numerous improv, sketch, and stand up comedy shows at his old stomping grounds. With his improv troupe, Sunglow, he headlined Dallas Comedy House on weekends and traveled across the country performing in various comedy festivals before moving to Los Angeles in 2018 to pursue a career in Stand Up. Over the last year, Ahmed has gained a following on TikTok and Instagram with some of his most notable work such as "Roommates with Anxiety" , "F-Boi Rehab", or "Arab at an Indian Wedding" ; his was content featured on Buzzfeed and DankMemes. In this episode, three poets laureate — Lee Herrick, the first Asian American poet laureate of California; Kealoha, Hawai'i's first poet laureate; and Nadia Elbgal, the Oakland youth poet laureate — perform and read their works in celebration of National Poetry Month in April.Kealoha, a slam champion who has a degree in nuclear physics from MIT, began by performing a scene from his film, The Story of Everything, a creation story inspired by his son that tells 13.8 billion years worth of time, from the Big Bang to human life on Earth. Next, Elbgal, a Yemeni American activist and recent Berkeley High graduate, read three works of hers, including "Product of a Blended Culture" and "Spark." Yemeni-Americans are a growing segment of the population in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. Kipp Cozad, a Middle East scholar and former Peace Corps Volunteer in Yemen will discuss what makes Yemenis unique among the Arab population using Yemen's vast history to reveal an identity that is both highly cosmopolitan and, at the same time, static and isolated. These qualities present a fascinating culture that few get a chance to experience. Finally, Cozad will place Yemeni mobility in historical context, explain how Yemenis ended up in America, and how the current conflict in the Arab nation has interrupted modern patterns of movement. We encourage Yemeni-Americans to attend to gain a better understanding of their rich history and to ask Cozad about his experiences in Yemen. We invite all to attend to learn about Yemen and to engage in the discussion at lecture's end.

Nagi Daifallah was a young farm worker from Yemen who moved to California in the early 1970s, when he was just 20 years old. He went on to become one of the organisers of the influential 1973 grape strikes in California, led by Cesar Chavez. But one night, after a day of striking, he was beaten to death by a local county sheriff outside a restaurant in Lamont, California. Although the sheriff who killed him never faced justice, Nagi's story - and the movement he helped organise - went on to make real change to farm workers' rights in America, and continues to inspire Yemeni American activists today. We leave last week's Western Stampede behind but return to the town of Chowchilla to find out more about its history from its Dust Bowl migrants to present day immigrants, including the only Yemeni-American family living in Chowchilla. We also meet the 84-year-old grandson of one of the town's earliest white settlers. His grandparents sold 150 horses and left the cold weather of North Dakota to start a dairy farm in Chowchilla. Their 1910 house still stands. Like many towns back then, Chowchilla had racist housing covenants that kept certain groups of people out. But just a couple of miles from town was a place where Black people could actually buy property. At one point, the Black settlement of Fairmead had the largest single dairy in the state. We find out more about Fairmead's past and what it can teach us today.

After its yearslong bombing campaign, Saudi Arabia is now desperate to get out of Yemen, and ready to talk peace.This signals a potential breakthrough in the long-simmering conflict in Yemen that has led to mass humanitarian concerns, as key ports to deliver aid have been blocked during the conflict. Related: Labeling the Houthis as ‘terrorists' might actually cost Yemeni livesYemen has been embroiled in a civil war since 2014, when the Houthis swept across much of the north and seized the capital, Sanaa, forcing the internationally recognized government into exile. A Saudi-led coalition entered the war the following year on the side of the government.The Houthis have been attempting, since February, to capture Marib to complete their control over the northern part of Yemen. But they have not made substantial progress and suffered heavy losses amid stiff resistance from government forces aided by the Saudi-led coalition supporting them.The war has killed more than 130,000 people and spawned the world's worst humanitarian crisis.Related: Yemen's most stable city threatened by Houthi takeoverNardwuar Dasari, a Yemeni American political analyst and nonresident scholar with the Middle East Institute in Washington, DC, joined The World's host Marco Werman to discuss Saudi Arabia's position and potential impact on Yemen. Marco Werman: Why do you think Saudi Arabia wants to extricate itself from the war in Yemen? It's been involved for six years. Why now?Nardwuar Dasari: The Saudis are fatigued. They've been at war with the Houthis since early 2015, and they've been particularly stuck since the so-called agreement, which was brokered in December 2013 between the Houthis and [the then-President Abdrabbuh Mansur] Hadi government, which stopped the Emirati forces from retaking Hudaydah, the key seaport of Hudaydah, from the Houthis, which led the Emiratis to kind of scale down their operations in Yemen and decide that they're not going to do any more offensive operations. So, the Saudis have been stuck since then because it was the Emiratis that were doing the ground operations, not the Saudis. And so, they're just desperate to get out.Officials from Saudi Arabia and the Houthi rebels are now talking. How and when did these talks start and where they are?The Saudis have been talking with the Houthis since 2015. It's not true that the Saudis have not been talking with the Houthis. They have been, and Houthis have been hosted by the Saudis in Saudi Arabia several times. But right now, the only thing that has changed is that the Saudis are too desperate to leave, and the Houthis know that the Saudis are too desperate to leave. So, that's why the Houthis, their demands are very high. They they're not giving any concessions in return.My understanding is that the talks now between the Saudis and the Houthi rebels are centered around the Saudis lifting an air and sea blockade. In exchange, the Houthis would guarantee a truce. Is that essentially what's on the table right now?So, the Houthis are demanding that the airport, the Sanaa airport, and Hudaydah seaport be open completely and unconditionally before having any talks about any other thing, before talking about a ceasefire, or giving any other concessions. And the Houthis insist that these are humanitarian issues and must not be tied to the negotiations on the conflict and the ceasefire.But, are you optimistic that these early steps to peace could actually bring about peace?No, no, I mean, the Saudi-Houthi negotiations have nothing to do with peace. They're not going to lead to peace. The thing is, what the Houthis and the Saudis are negotiating right now, and what the Houthis are demanding, is for the Saudis to leave Yemen unconditionally. They've said that publicly. They've published a vision on that. It's very clearly articulated in their public statements that they want the Saudis to leave. They want, you know, all the seaports and airports to be open. And they want the Saudis to leave them to deal with Yemen.So, what's going to happen if the Saudis leave? Let's assume that they reach an agreement and the Saudis leave unconditionally like the Houthis want. What's going to happen is that the Houthis will continue their plan to capture the important city of Marib, which is the last government stronghold where 3 million civilians live, including 1.5 million IDPs [internally displaced persons]. And they're going to continue to storm the rest of the country because they want to consolidate their control all over Yemen. So, we're going to see a deescalation in Houthi attacks to Saudi, but we're going to see a major escalation of the fighting internally.How much of a role does a new White House administration play in this, or are they quietly pressuring Saudi to dial back its war in Yemen? And is this a scenario Biden bargained on?I would say to some extent, yes. Biden made it very clear when he came to power that he wants the Yemen conflict to end and he will reduce the support for Saudi offensive operations. But that's only part of the reason why the Saudis want to leave. They completely mismanaged the war and they don't seem to have the competency to lead a war where they defeat the Houthis.I should mention that Saudi Arabia's also been holding talks with Iran, which supports the Houthis. Would you say Saudis' willingness to talk is also part of greater efforts to improve relations with its regional rival?I do think that the Saudis want to see some deescalation with Iran. I don't think, though, that they are too naive to think that Iran will deescalate. So, I'm not sure that the talks between Iran and the Saudis will go far. But, it's certainly interesting to see the Saudis even open to that.This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity. AP contributed to this report.

When she heard about the Women's Mosque opening in January 2015, she flew out from New Jersey to California to call our very first adthan! Mona Abdulla is the mother of two boys and the daughter of Yemeni-American immigrant parents. She was born and raised in Buffalo, NY and is currently involved in multiple community and entrepreneurial projects. Previously she spent many years working as a Career Counselor. Mona received her Bachelor degree in Psychology and her Master degree in College Student Affairs from Buffalo State. Mona also serves as a Board Trustee for Lackawanna City Schools and loves working for the public. Some of her accomplishments include: being one of the first Yemeni females in the WNY area to attend college and the first Yemeni American female in the United States to hold public office. Also, while in school, she received the Hurculine Guthrie Commitment to Diversity Award. Later Mona received an Appreciation Award from the Yemeni American Merchants Association in NYC. When Mona was a child, she remembers how fun it was to grow up with two cultures. Because of this, she feels she can easily connect with people from various backgrounds. Being able to view the world from different perspectives has given her the passion to be the voice for Muslim Americans, Yemenis, women and minorities. Mona hopes to use this insight to speak out against injustices and to demand change. She would also like to empower women through her work. Nagi Daifallah was a young farm worker from Yemen who moved to California in the early 1970s, when he was just 20 years old. He went on to become one of the organisers of the influential 1973 grape strike in California, led by Cesar Chavez. But one night, after a day of striking, he was beaten to death by a local county sheriff outside a restaurant in Lamont, California. Although the sheriff who killed him never faced justice, Nagi’s story - and the movement he helped organise - went on to make real change to farm workers’ rights in America, and continues to inspire Yemeni American activists today. Since then, the Houthis have imprisoned and tortured opponents of their regime, and they continue to lay siege to areas not under their control.But they also act as a national government, ruling over the populous northern region of Yemen, including the capital, Sana’a.Related: In Yemen, war is 'trumping peace'If the United States labels the Houthis as an FTO, many aid activities in Yemen will stop.“Designation would make it generally illegal for anyone to transact with Ansar Allah armed group [the Houthis] or the government they control in Sana'a,” said Scott Paul, humanitarian policy lead for Oxfam America. “And depending on how it's designated, it might also prohibit the provision of any form of support, anything as small as a slice of pizza at a training.”The war in Yemen has killed 100,000 people, left Yemen’s economy in shambles and forced most of Yemen’s 30 million people to survive on food, fuel and cash payments provided by foreign aid organizations that work in Yemen with the consent of the Houthi government.‘Strengthening public and social services’The US aims to increase pressure on the Houthis — who receive support from Iran — to negotiate a settlement with the opposing Yemeni government, which is backed by Saudi Arabia. A US State Department spokesperson told The World, “Our focus is on supporting a comprehensive political agreement that will end the conflict and resolve the dire humanitarian situation.”The Houthis would join al-Qaeda, al-Shabab and ISIS on the list of groups designated by the US as foreign terrorist organizations. And while the Houthis share some of these militant groups’ more brutal characteristics, their members also help manage essential public services,  including health, sanitation, water, telecommunications and banking for tens of millions of Yemenis.“We can't simply go without interacting with the government in a place like Yemen,” said Paul. “Much of what we do is focused on strengthening public and social services.” He added, “Groups could be subject to fines or even criminal penalties for doing the work that they've been doing for the last five and a half years in this humanitarian response.”Aisha Jumaan, a Yemeni American, runs a US-based charity that works in some of Yemen’s most inaccessible places. “We're not going to be able to send funds to Yemen anymore for any of our operations,” said Jumaan. Her charity, Yemen Relief and Reconstruction, distributes food baskets to thousands of families in need.“And these people, we’re their last chance," she added. "These people have nothing to eat. These people will know that the rest of the world, led by the US, says you don't matter.”‘Need to change their behavior’The US State Department does not publicly discuss deliberations regarding potential designations. But a department spokesperson, responding to The World, wrote, “We do believe strongly that the Houthis need to change their behavior and stop exacerbating Yemen’s humanitarian crisis; stop arbitrarily detaining people; stop attacking civilian populations, ​infrastructure, and shipping; and stop working with the IRGC [Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps], a designated foreign terrorist organization.”Some Yemenis support the idea of designating the Houthis as terrorists. "There was a protest last week,” Afrah Nasser, a Yemeni researcher who works with Human Rights Watch, said of a demonstration in the besieged central Yemeni city of Taiz.Thousands Of Yemenis in #Taiz city today in a protest demand @UN , @SecPompeo and @UNGeneva listing #Houthi militia as a #terrorist group .#terrorism #Yemen pic.twitter.com/0eDp5ahoVO— Mohammed Al-Rumim (@mohammedalrumim) November 27, 2020“People were holding banners that said, ‘With one voice, we demand the designation of the Houthi armed group as a terrorist group,’” she added. “I understand the unspeakable suffering of civilians in Taiz who have faced indiscriminate shelling and attacks. But the designation in and of itself will not provide justice for victims in Taiz, or any place in Yemen.”While a designation may not bring justice to Yemeni victims of the Houthis, some observers believe it could pressure the Houthis into negotiating with the Saudi-backed Yemeni government.“This is what the Trump administration and people such as Secretary of State [Mike] Pompeo have been arguing,” notes Gregory Johnsen of the Brookings Institution. “They’re saying that the international community does not have a great deal of leverage over the Houthis, and designating them as a foreign terrorist organization would give us a stick to compel them to make a deal with the Saudi-led coalition.”  Johnsen, who served on the UN panel of experts which oversees a sanctions program in Yemen, does not believe that a terrorist designation would have the intended effect.“Designating them as a foreign terrorist organization and essentially criminalizing activity, which would cut off humanitarian aid into Houthi-controlled areas, it's not going to do much good.”The State Department has not yet made the designation.“From everything that I'm seeing from people that I've been speaking with in Washington, it appears as though the Trump administration really wants to make this happen.”Gregory Johnsen, Brookings Institution“From everything that I'm seeing from people that I've been speaking with in Washington, it appears as though the Trump administration really wants to make this happen,” Johnsen told The World.“I know that internally there has been significant resistance from a number of different departments, whether that's in the Department of Defense or the State Department,” he added.“It's unclear whether the Trump administration will be able to override those professional concerns and make this designation on their way out the door,” Johnsen said, predicting that a decision could come in the next couple of weeks.Correction: An earlier version of this article misidentified the humanitarian policy lead for Oxfam America. Some of you may have read in the news or on social media about the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, a country located on the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia. The civil/proxy war that's been occurring for years in Yemen has prevented shipments of food and other basic resources from being accessible and affordable to Yemeni citizens. This has contributed to Yemen's humanitarian crisis, which, according to UNICEF, is the largest in the world, with more than 24 million people, which is around 80% of the population, in need of humanitarian assistance, including more than 12 million children. Over 2 million Yemeni children are malnourished and a Yemeni child dies a preventable death every 10 minutes. And now, the coronavirus outbreak has really compounded the entire situation—health services, already strained, are even more so, millions of children are now unable to access education, and tens of thousands more children could develop life-threatening acute malnutrition over the next few months. Summer Nasser, the CEO of the humanitarian INGO Yemen Aid and a speaker and analyst on Yemeni affairs, joins me on the podcast to spread awareness about Yemen's situation. On Tuesday the Supreme Court handed the president a huge victory in Trump v. Hawaii, the case challenging the legality of his executive order barring citizens of five Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States. The verdict upholding the ban generated a wave of condemnation across the country. On this special episode of Deconstructed, Mehdi Hasan speaks with Keith Ellison, the first Muslim-American ever elected to Congress, as well as Yemeni-American community organizer and anti-ban activist Debbie Almontaser.

Dr. Debbie Almontaser came to the United States from Yemen at the age of three, meeting her father and experiencing snow, both for the first time. On April 25, 2018, she sat in the Supreme Court, listening to oral arguments on a policy that bans people who, like her, were born in Yemen, along with five other majority Muslim countries, from entering the same country that welcomed her as a child. In her story, Debbie explores the ban's impact on Yemeni-Americans and why she is determined to remain optimistic.

With a focus on gender, third-culture identity, and family, visual artist Yasmine Diaz works with mixed media on paper, drawing, and collage to question and assert her unique experiences as a Yemeni-American artist and feminist.

We will talk about being a visual artist in the times of Instagram and how to play with the media in order to have an impact. Yumna will share an experience of turning pain into something positive and constructive, she will talk about what it means to be vulnerable as an artist and how it is important to find and share joy.

Dr. Debbie Almontaser is a Yemeni-American and Muslim community leader and activist, founder of the Bridging Cultures Group and the Khalil Gibran International Academy, a New York public school with an English and Arabic bi-lingual program. Almontaser discusses growing up in a largely white neighborhood in Buffalo, New York, rediscovering her Muslim faith in her 20s and making the decision to wear the hijab, the controversy that led to her resigning as head of Khalil Gibran Academy, and winning her ensuing wrongful termination lawsuit against the Department of Education. Gadeir Abbas, an attorney for Yemeni Americans challenging the US government's refusal to evacuate them from the war-ravaged country, joins the show to discuss the filed lawsuit. What power do these Americans have to force the government to uphold their citizenship rights and launch an operation to evacuate them? Why does the government treat Yemeni Americans as second class citizens?  In the second half of the interview, Abbas, who represents Gulet Mohamed, an American challenging his placement on the No Fly List, discusses a development in the lawsuit where the government claims it has made changes to the process. It will now tell Americans if they are on the No Fly List if they use the government's system to write to the government and ask for confirmation. But Americans easily can figure this out when they are not able to travel because an agent tells them they are on the watch list.  What of the changes are meaningful? What does this mean for No Fly List challenges?
