CTL Script/ Top Stories of January 27th         Publish Date: January 26th         From the Ingles Studio Welcome to the Award-Winning Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast    Today is Saturday, January 27th, and Happy heavenly Birthday to musician Bobby 'Blue' Bland. ***01.27.24 – BIRTHDAY – BOBBY BLUE BAND*** I'm Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cherokee is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  Amazon Faces Unexpected Retail Challenger: A New Rival Rises Beyond Walmart Regional Honor Band Welcomes Selected Students from CCSD 'Work in Cherokee' Campaign Launched by COED President Misti Martin We'll have all this and more coming up on the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger Podcast, and if you're looking for Community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    Commercial: CU of GA   STORY 1: Forget Walmart, Amazon has a surprising huge new rival Amazon's massive infrastructure, including its network of warehouses and delivery fleet, creates a significant barrier for potential rivals. Walmart has come close to matching this advantage. Other players like Shopify have struggled to compete due to the immense costs involved in building a comparable infrastructure. FedEx, having decided to stop doing business with Amazon in 2019, has built a substantial delivery network nationally. Now, FedEx plans to offer its retailer customers access to an e-commerce platform named "fdx," leveraging its delivery capabilities and technology from the acquisition of ShopRunner in 2020. This move aims to revolutionize supply chain management and enhance FedEx's relationships with merchants. STORY 2: CCSD Students Selected for Regional Honor Band Sixty-five middle school band members from the Cherokee County School District (CCSD) have been selected for the Georgia Music Educators Association District 9 Honor Band. These students, chosen through December auditions, will participate in a clinic and performance in Blue Ridge on February 2-3. CCSD Superintendent Brian Hightower commended the achievement, emphasizing the importance of performing arts in middle schools and expressing gratitude to dedicated band teachers for providing exceptional instruction and opportunities. The selected students represent various middle schools, each led by their respective band directors.   STORY 3: COED President Misti Martin Announces 'Work in Cherokee' Campaign The Cherokee Office of Economic Development (COED) is launching the Work in Cherokee campaign to boost the county's workforce, offering a $1,500 signing bonus to employees who relocate their jobs to Cherokee County after a 120-day employment period. Funded by American Rescue Plan Act relief funds, the campaign aims to attract and retain talent, foster innovative business investment, and enhance infrastructure. COED also plans a workforce analysis and website careers page update. The initiative aligns with Cherokee By Choice 2.0 goals. COED has previously assisted over $1 billion in investments and 8,000 job creations.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Three men carjacked a 2023 Cadillac CT4, fleeing toward the KSU campus. The carjacked vehicle was located by the Cobb Police's Real Time Crime Center, leading KSU Police to issue a secure-in-place alert due to reports of an armed intruder on campus. Marquise Adams, 17, was apprehended with the stolen vehicle's keys after a foot chase, but two suspects remained at large. No shots were fired on campus, and there were no reported injuries. The secure-in-place alert was lifted at 8:18 p.m. as police continue to investigate. Contact the Cobb County Police Department with information at 770-499-4111. STORY 5: Cherokee County Student Selected for All-State Art Competition Woodstock High School junior Kate Bean has been chosen as one of 50 Georgia high school students for the All-State Art Symposium, hosted at Columbus State University. Out of over 2,000 student entries, Bean's painting titled "Still Life" earned her a spot in the statewide competition. She is a student of Woodstock High School visual arts teacher Lori Thompson. The Cherokee County School District expressed pride in Kate's achievement and acknowledged the role of fine arts programs in providing students with opportunities to nurture their talents and creativity. Kate will be honored at the school board meeting on February 15.   Commercial: GCPS – INGLES 3   STORY 6: Harry Johnston Shares 'State of Cherokee' At the Council for Quality Growth's 2024 State of Cherokee County event, Cherokee County Commission Chair Harry Johnston outlined plans for the county's future growth. Focusing on maintaining low taxes and high-quality services, Johnston emphasized the need to keep up with road work, prevent overwhelming growth, and address attainable housing challenges. He expressed the goal of maintaining expense growth below population growth and inflation. Johnston acknowledged the rising costs of public safety and the need for more funding for alternatives to incarceration. Slowing population growth to around 0.75% over 30 years and increasing road funding were highlighted as challenges and goals. STORY 7: Cherokee County Student Named Candidate for U.S. Presidential Scholars Program Creekview High School senior Kinley Sikes has been selected as a candidate for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, an elite national honor. Among 5,000 students nationwide and 207 from Georgia, Sikes was chosen based on her outstanding performance on the ACT or SAT. The next stage involves an application review considering academic excellence, personal character, leadership, and service activities. Finalists will be selected, with 161 Presidential Scholars named in the spring. PCOM Georgia and Gwinnett County Public Schools work together to help STEM students Gwinnett Woman Forms Nonprofit To Support Cancer Patients Georgia General Assembly Kicks Off 2024 Session: $16 Billion Surplus Sparks Debate on Tax Cuts, Education, and Healthcare   All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: PCOM Georgia and Gwinnett County Public Schools work together to help STEM students Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) and PCOM Georgia collaborate on STEM opportunities for Gwinnett students. The partnership began in 2004 when GCPS purchased a facility near PCOM Georgia. The college sponsors the Gwinnett Science, Engineering + Innovation Fair, with faculty and staff serving on the advisory board. PCOM Georgia participates in events like Principal for a Day and the STAR Student luncheon, enhancing community engagement. The college offers career fairs and programs like Opportunities Academy, Summer STEM Saturdays, and Future Healthcare Scholars to introduce high school students to healthcare professions. The collaboration extends to faculty involvement, capstone projects, and admissions outreach.   STORY 2: Helping Hand: Gwinnett Woman Forms Nonprofit To Support Cancer Patients Bobbie Menneg, a breast cancer survivor of 12 years, founded Beyond the Ribbon to provide support, encouragement, and hope to cancer patients. The Lawrenceville-based nonprofit offers assistance through various programs, including Jane's Closet (a food pantry), Pat's Pillows & Pouches (providing pillows, drain pouches, and seat belt cushions), and Chloe & Friends (supporting family pets). During Christmas, Beyond the Ribbon adopts families, fulfilling wish lists and distributing grocery store gift cards. Menneg organizes creative fundraising events, including golf tournaments, 5K races, car shows, and recent events like "Rainbows, Reindeers & Wishes" and "Bingo & Beyond." The nonprofit aims to bring joy to cancer families during challenging times.   STORY 3: Good problem for General Assembly: What to do with surplus? The 2024 session of the Georgia General Assembly, starting with a $16 billion budget surplus, is expected to address various long-debated issues. The state's surplus and $11 billion undesignated funds will be a focal point of discussions, determining spending priorities. Governor Brian Kemp proposed accelerating the state income tax cut and additional spending, including one-time pay supplements for state employees and teachers. Legislative Republicans are likely to push for private school vouchers, while tort reform and legalized gambling, particularly sports betting, are also on the agenda. Transportation funding and potential Medicaid expansion discussions are expected during the session.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back. Break 2: GCPS – TOM WAGES –INGLES 5   STORY 4: UGA retention, completion rates remain strong The University of Georgia (UGA) achieved a nearly 95% first-year retention rate for first-time freshmen, showcasing the success of efforts to enhance the academic environment and support students. The university's six-year completion rate maintained a record high of 88%, and the four-year completion rate indicated that almost three-quarters of UGA students graduate within four years. UGA's retention and completion rates continue to surpass those of its peer institutions, reflecting a decade-long commitment to initiatives such as the Active Learning Initiative, faculty hiring programs, academic advisor expansion, tutoring, mentorship, and peer-learning programs. The university's focus on data-driven student success strategies contributes to its ongoing improvement.   STORY 5: Georgia lawmakers to again consider Okefenokee mining ban Georgia lawmakers are preparing to address the contentious issue of a proposed mine near the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge as the legislative session begins. Twin Pines, an Alabama-based company, aims to mine minerals, including titanium dioxide, near the Okefenokee, raising concerns about potential environmental harm. House Bill 71, currently before the legislature, seeks to protect the Okefenokee by prohibiting new mining permits within the area. Although the bill did not progress last year, supporters are optimistic about its chances this time. Opponents are also exploring other avenues, including pressuring companies not to purchase products from a mine near the refuge.   We'll be back in a moment.   Break 3:  ESOG – DTL   STORY 6: New robotic device improves walking for Parkinson's patients Scientists from Harvard and Boston University have developed a wearable robotic device to help people with Parkinson's disease walk without "freezing" or stumbling. The device is a robotic garment worn around the hips and thighs, providing a gentle push to the hips as the legs swing, allowing wearers to achieve a longer stride and walk faster and further. In trials, the garment eliminated freezing episodes in participants with Parkinson's. The technology offers a potential solution to one of the major contributors to falls in people with Parkinson's, as existing treatments are not highly effective.   STORY 7: Psychedelic plant successfully treats war vets' traumatic brain injuries: study A study by researchers at Stanford University explored the potential of ibogaine, a naturally occurring compound found in the roots of the African shrub iboga, to alleviate symptoms of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) in war veterans. Ibogaine, a psychedelic plant, was found to significantly improve functioning, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety in veterans with TBIs. The research team worked with 30 special-ops veterans with a history of TBIs, and the results indicated immediate and lasting improvements in various areas. However, the use of ibogaine is restricted in the United States due to its classification as a Schedule I-controlled substance.   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: Henssler 60   Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. These trailers, called Modular Production Kitchens (MPKs), will be strategically placed in food desert areas in partnership with churches to streamline the meal outreach process. Reid is seeking funding to complete the prototype MPK, and the entire three-trailer project is expected to cost at least $200,000 each. Lettum Eat has been serving the community since 2019, providing fresh meals through food truck feeding tours and distributing prepackaged frozen meals.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back   Break 2: TOM WAGES – DTL   STORY 4: Gwinnett will Spend $2.5 Billion to Operate County Government Gwinnett County commissioners voted 4-1 to approve the $2.5 billion 2024 budget, which includes the $1.97 billion operating budget and the $561 million capital budget. The budget introduces 104 new positions across various departments, expands microtransit into Suwanee, Sugar Hill, and Buford, offers a 4% pay-for-performance raise for county employees, and addresses affordable housing needs. The county allocates $25.3 million for elections, adds two affordable housing coordinator positions, and utilizes $18 million in federal funding to incentivize affordable housing development. Other additions include a new med unit in Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services, expansion of the Gwinnett Trails program, and improvements in mental health care.   STORY 5: State Rep. Greg Kennard will not seek re-election after redistricting put him in the same district as Sam Park Two Georgia House Democrats, Rep. Gregg Kennard and Rep. Doug Stoner, will not seek reelection in 2024 after being drawn into districts with fellow Democrats during the recent redistricting special session. The new House map approved by Republican majorities paired Kennard with House Minority Whip Sam Park in Gwinnett County, and Stoner with Rep. Teri Anulewicz in Cobb County. Kennard cited his unwillingness to force voters to choose between him and Park as a reason for stepping down. The redistricting special session aimed to address a ruling declaring the 2021 legislative and congressional maps violated the Voting Rights Act.   We'll be back in a moment   Break 3: ESOG – INGLES 2   STORY 6: UGA Extension offers disaster support throughout the state The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension is aiding Georgia's farmers in emergency preparedness and recovery from climate-related events. With a presence in all 159 counties, UGA Extension provides training and resources to help communities prepare for and rebound from weather-related calamities. The extension has received grants to spearhead emergency preparedness throughout the state, focusing on the unique challenges faced by each region. The extension agents work with the Georgia Department of Agriculture to collect agricultural economic damage data and assist farmers in navigating relief programs after disaster events. The program also addresses farm and rural stress initiatives.   STORY 7: PCOM Georgia and Gwinnett County Public Schools work together to help STEM students Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) Georgia collaborate to provide STEM opportunities for Gwinnett students. PCOM Georgia serves as the presenting sponsor for the Gwinnett Science, Engineering + Innovation Fair, an annual event encouraging students to explore the sciences. PCOM Georgia faculty and staff also contribute to advisory boards and participate in events like Principal for a Day and the annual STAR Student luncheon. The collaboration extends to career fairs, simulation activities, and programs like the Future Healthcare Scholars program, reinforcing the commitment to STEM education in Gwinnett County.   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: Henssler 60   Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. Kevn Kinney will be performing in Atlanta and Athens this weekend, and he swings by to talk to us about the shows and life on the road.  Also: One person is dead and another injured after their car left I-75 North near Bells Ferry Road and tumbled down an embankment early Wednesday, according to the Marietta Police Department. Edgar Perez, 45, and his wife, Blanca Manriquez-Rodriguez, 43, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, were traveling north on the freeway at about 5:30 a.m. when Manriquez-Rodriguez, who was driving, lost control of the 2016 Toyota Sienna minivan, said Officer Chuck McPhilamy, spokesman for the Marietta Police Department. The van “struck the right guardrail, flipped over it and tumbled down a large embankment toward Bells Ferry Lane,” according to McPhilamy. Perez died as a result of the crash, while Manrique-Rodriguez was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with serious injuries, McPhilamy said. The investigation into the crash is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact Investigator St. Onge. Deviating from their normal Wednesday morning routines, members of the Catholic Church of St. Ann gathered to sing, worship and have a cross of ash marked on their foreheads. The east Cobb church held five services over the day, beginning the six-week season of Lent leading up to Easter. The season commemorates Jesus Christ's journey into the desert, where he fasted and was tempted by the devil. At the end of St. Ann's Mass, following the Eucharist, members filed down the aisles to receive the ash ritual. The Revrend Joseph Aquino, who presided over the 9 a.m. Mass, explained that ashes are a symbol of repentance for Christians — back in biblical times, people would sit in ashes and sackcloth to express penance. In keeping with that theme, Christians often forego certain luxuries during Lent, seeking to follow Christ's example. An errant kick in a physical education class made the Grayson boys basketball's postseason road more interesting. The Rams' home court flooded earlier this month when a sprinkler, hit by a soccer ball during PE, poured water on the boards and rendered the surface unplayable until it is replaced. Because of the damage, Grayson entered the state playoffs unable to host despite being a No. 1 seed. Archer is now the Rams' home site for the opening rounds of the playoffs. Grayson looked plenty comfortable in its new setting Wednesday night, riding an efficient offense to a 99-56 rout of Marietta in the Class AAAAAAA first round. It advances to host another game at Archer on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Valdosta. The Rams (22-5) put up a season high in points, had 58 points at halftime and 83 through three quarters. A total of 13 players scored in the win. Jaiden Mann and Jack Bourgeois scored 15 points each to lead Marietta (5-25). Todd LeCadre added 10 points. The Devils finish at 5-25 on the year. The Wheeler boys utilized a big fourth quarter to defeat Milton 81-64 in the first round of the Class AAAAAAA state playoffs on Wednesday. Wheeler (22-6) outscored the Eagles 29-12 in the final quarter. The game was tied with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter until the Wildcats went on a 17-0 run over the next four minutes. Every point scored on the run came shots at the basket or by free throw, as Wheeler punished the Eagles on fast breaks. The win advanced Wheeler to the second round of the tournament, where the Wildcats will host North Gwinnett on Saturday, after the Bulldogs defeated Mill Creek 72-62. Isaiah Collier led the Wildcats in scoring with 28 points, including a 12-point fourth quarter. Collier was one of three Wildcats to break double-digit scoring, alongside Rickey McKenzie with 20 and Arrinten Page with 12. On the other side of the court, the Eagles were led in scoring by Josh Dixon with 20, including a 10-point second quarter. Seth Fitzgerald and Avery White each added 15 for Milton. A Senate committee voted Wednesday to advance state Sen. Kay Kirkpatrick's bill to limit passport fee receipts by Georgia clerks of court. As the east Cobb Republican noted, the operative word is now “limit,” rather than “eliminate.” An earlier version of the legislation would have barred clerks of court from receiving personal income from processing U.S. passport applications, which is currently allowed under Georgia law. The latest version of the bill would cap their income from passport fees at $7,500 per year. Senate Bill 19 was filed after media investigations into Cobb Superior Court Clerk Connie Taylor, who has pocketed more than $425,000 in fees since taking office atop her annual income of $170,000. Federal regulations allow local officials who process passport applications to charge a $35 fee for their trouble, while Georgia law permits county clerks who do so to keep that money as personal income. The practice is widespread across the state, but Taylor's proceeds drew scrutiny from Republican lawmakers who pledged to put an end to the supplementary income. Taylor, meanwhile, is facing a Georgia Bureau of Investigation probe following allegations she ordered the destruction of records of her passport fee income. Kirkpatrick's version of the bill then carried with bipartisan support. Democratic Gwinnett County state Sens. Merritt, Sheikh Rahman, and Nabilah Islam (the latter two of Lawrenceville) were the three votes against. Kirkpatrick told the MDJ she hopes for a vote by the full Senate next week. Thirty-six of Cobb County's finest minds will be celebrated for their achievements on Tuesday evening at the annual STAR Student and Teacher banquet, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Metro-Marietta. The STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) banquet recognizes high school seniors with the highest SAT scores and grade point average from public, private and charter schools across Cobb and Marietta. The STAR program was launched in 1958 by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and was adopted by the Metro-Marietta Kiwanis in 1966.  This year's banquet, scheduled for 6 p.m. at Roswell Street Baptist Church, is expected to attract more than 200 people. Students who are honored bring family as guests, and also get to select a STAR teacher from their school to be honored. The keynote speaker for this year's banquet is Condace Pressley, a journalist for WSB Radio and Marietta High graduate. CCSD panel says parents need to monitor kids' internet activities

Cherokee Tribune-Ledger Podcast

Parents need to be aware of what's going on in their kids' lives online, in addition to offline, panelists at a Cherokee County School District forum said Tuesday. As part of its Parent University series, CCSD brought in professionals from the school district, a school police officer, a counselor and a prosecutor to discuss cyberbullying and social media's impact on local students. Panelists agreed that parents need to have conversations with their children about the internet and social media, and create a safe environment where children can come to them if there's a problem. A poll of attendees showed 76% of parents had not had a child disclose that they had been cyberbullied. Unlike previous generations who could leave their problems with peers when they went home from school, with social media, bullying follows today's students home, hurting their mental health. High school students are less confident than they were before social media, Creekview High School Principal Michael Santoro said. Ashley Snow, a Cherokee County deputy chief assistant district attorney for juvenile court, warned that the internet can give children access to content that's not appropriate for kids. Many young children, as young as 9, are exposed to child pornography, she said, and some try to act out or experiment with behavior that “breaks families apart.” It's also common for children to share information with strangers on the internet, not realizing the risks, Snow said. She recommended that parents restrict their children's access to the internet, video game devices and cell phones. If a child sends explicit content to another person, it “absolutely” should be reported, Dobbs said, even if it's to another minor. To report cyberbullying or another issue to school officials, parents and students can use CCSD's Vector Alert system, and can submit reports anonymously. The system isn't 24/7, Murdock said, but officials will respond quickly. People can also report to a teacher or counselor, or to a school administrator. Athletes from all six Cherokee County high schools celebrated the annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day on January 30 at Woodstock High School. More than 500 female athletes participated as NGWSD recognized the contributions they made in their sports and celebrated their positive influence on the landscape. The day is celebrated in all 50 states, and Cherokee County has hosted its own event since 2005. Each year, the program chooses a coach to honor for their contributions and support of the area's female athletes. Woodstock athletic director Julie Crowe earned this year's award and was also acknowledged for her 20 years as the Wolverines' girls' basketball coach. Cherokee County's 18 female wrestlers were recognized with the Trailblazer award for their participation in a historically male-dominated sport. Each school had an Athlete of the Year recipient, along with an alumna and team of the year. Cherokee's Athlete of the Year was Lexi Pavese, Creekview's was Anslie Pettit and Astrid Medina was honored from Etowah. Mataya Gayle was River Ridge's honoree, Laurel Blase earned the award from Sequoyah and Hannah Obenauf was Woodstock's winner. Creekview also honored alumna Alivia Mynes, who was tragically lost in a car accident in 2022. Nine Cherokee County football players put pen to paper Wednesday, signing their national letters of intent to join collegiate football programs. Etowah led the way with three signees, followed by Creekview, River Ridge and Sequoyah with two. Etowah kicker Carson Allen made one of the biggest splashes, signing with a Southeastern Conference school in Mississippi State. He was a five-star kicker as rated by Kohl's Kicking, and he was the No. 42-ranked kicker in the class of 2023. Etowah also had two defensive backs sign Wednesday, with Frank Mosley going to West Virginia State and Jamir Maxime to Reinhardt. Sequoyah also had a pair of defensive backs sign in Cantrell Davis (Tuskegee) and Ridley Joseph (Concordia-St. Paul). Creekview, offensive/defensive lineman Anthony Caraballo inked his letter with Huntingdon, while fullback/defensive lineman Jacob Hefner signed as a preferred walk-on at Furman. Defensive lineman Ethan Anderson (Warner) and offensive lineman Reed Albers (Centre) were River Ridge's signees. Woodstock did not have any signees Wednesday, though it had two players sign with Division I programs during the early signing period in Adonis Garcia (Wofford) and Tyler Douthit (Samford). Cherokee is expected to have two players sign on a later date in Kyan Simmons and Ryane Martin. Canton Mayor Bill Grant is "excited" to address the Interstate 575 exit at Hickory Flat Highway into the city this year, he told attendees at a Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce event Thursday. Grant, Canton City Council members Brooke Schmidt, JoEllen Wilson and Shawn Tolan, and City Manager Billy Peppers shared updates about the city with local community and business leaders at the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce's Good Morning Cherokee meeting Thursday. Grant, the council members and Peppers shared a number of statistics and bullet points showcasing how Canton has grown and continues to grow with the guidance of the city's "Roadmap to Success." The eight tenets of the city's roadmap are: Creating Great Neighborhoods Celebrating the Diversity of Our Community Advancing Regional Economic Success Enhancing Historic Downtown Canton Sustaining Our Natural Environment Connecting Citizens to Parks and Recreation Improving Infrastructure for Future Demands Leading with Excellence In 2022, Canton saw its population grow to over 35,000 — about five times its 2000 population, which was 7,000, Peppers said. The number of city employees also grew to 134, and the city changed its starting base compensation for employees to $20 an hour. To address housing needs, last year in addition to approving private housing developments, Canton officials committed $2.8 million in a low interest loan for the Shipp Street housing redevelopment.  The city also entered into an agreement with the Canton Housing Authority for $1 million in support for a 9% low-income housing tax credits application. Susan Treadaway has taken an administrative oath as Cherokee County's acting district attorney, after former District Attorney Shannon Wallace was sworn in as a Superior Court judge. Chief Superior Court Judge Ellen McElyea swore in Susan Treadaway as acting district attorney of the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit serving Cherokee County January 31, the district attorney's office announced. Katie Gropper was sworn in as chief assistant district attorney. Treadaway was previously the chief assistant district attorney. The design phase includes field surveys and survey database, environmental documentation including all required special studies, geotechnical, preliminary construction plans, as well as lighting and right-of-way plans (including revisions) for the improvements at I-575 at the Ridgewalk Parkway interchange, according to city documents. The change comes after Governor Brian Kemp swore in Wallace in Atlanta Jan. 30. Kemp appointed Wallace to the newly created fourth judicial seat on the Superior Court. Treadaway will hold the position of acting district attorney pending Governor Kemp's appointment of Wallace's successor. There was a three-way tie for the 2023 STAR Student for Cherokee County this year. Griffen Bon and Braden Flournoy from Cherokee High School, as well as Avi Stein from Etowah High School, were recognized last week at the annual STAR Student and Teacher Recognition Ceremony hosted at the Canton Theatre by the Canton Lions Club, which has been the local sponsor since the STAR program began in 1958.  The winners were announced last Tuesday at a program sponsored by the Canton Lions Club at the Historic Canton Theater. They were selected from the eight STAR Students named for each of the seven high schools in Cherokee County. The Cherokee County School District recognizes its high school students with the highest SAT scores and their teachers through the Student Teacher Achievement Recognition program. The STAR Student honor is awarded to the high school senior from each Georgia public and private high school with the highest score on any single test date of the SAT and who also ranks in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of his or her class based on grade point average. Each honored student is invited to select his or her favorite teacher to be named that school's STAR Teacher. Do you know how to say yes to your intuition when literally everyone around you  is screaming no? Meet Beth Loster, Founder and Owner of A Thousand Mornings Forest School in Santa Barbara. In this episode, Beth talks about how she has learned to silence the curmudgeon in her head that lives in fear and uses words like “should” and “no”. Instead, Beth has learned to listen to that inner voice in side of her, her own inner philosopher, to guide her on her life's journey. After spending years trying on different personalities, from Bohemian to Star Student to Wild Child, she finally found that just being herself brought her the peace she so longed to embrace. Beth has dedicated her life to guiding young children to trust their inner knowing through outdoor play, and her hope is that her work will create a generation of humans who never lose touch with their own unique intuition. Following her intuition, she has built a thriving forest school and a beautiful family with the boy she followed across the country. Beth shares her amazing philosophy on education, and how personal empowerment is possible in even the smallest of humans, as long as the adults get out of the way. Hello and welcome back to this weeks episode of "Star Student Sunday!" (That didn't sound cheesy, right?) This week Gerard and I are going to talk about the benefits of reading and why we think it is important for you to read books! Personally, I've always thought it would be cool if I could figure out how to read more, and how to read faster. Tell me how often this has happened. You go somewhere new, you get introduced to all of these people, and literally the first thing they tell you is their name. You have a great conversation, you hit it off, or maybe you don't, who knows? But let me guess... you probably already forgot their name. It sucks when that happens. Especially if it is someone that you know you are going to see again. Nothing is more awkward than asking someone that you've known for six months what their first name is. Or even worse... calling them the wrong name. That's why in this episode we broke down why this happens, and some of the things that you can do in order to make sure that you remember everyone's name from this point forward. Well either way, that's exactly what we are doing. As it turns out, what you put into your body actually has a huge impact on how your body (and mind) will perform. The bad news is.... if you're anything like us... this list of the worst foods you could be consuming is probably going to sound exactly like your grocery list. The good news is... we are going to share some alternatives with you, so that you can make the CHOICE to live a healthier and more productive lifestyle. They say you are what you eat, right? So wouldn't you want to pay attention to what is going into your body? Okay okay... maybe we wouldn't say that you ARE what you eat. Because if you eat a carrot, you will not turn into a carrot. We will however say that you are HOW you eat. In other words, if you eat healthy, you will be healthy. So if you want to BE smart... you have to make sure you EAT smart... and that's what we are going to help you do today... and we aren't talking about "SmartFood" In this episode we go over the top 10 brain foods, that will improve your memory, increase your brain power, and be beneficial to your overall brain health. This episode will come in handy as a foundation for some future episodes, as we are going to go over the different brainwaves that are going on inside of your brain, and how they affect not only your brain, but your performance. Your brain has five different levels of brainwaves, as follows: Delta: The lowest frequency waves. These are the waves that dominate your brain when you are in a deep deep sleep. Nothing is really going on when you are in a delta state. This is even below the level where you would experience dreams. Theta: These waves are the next step above delta waves. Theta waves are most often associated with sleeping, or really deep meditation. You'll experience the theta state when your mind is clear, but not fully unconscious. Alpha: You will experience these Alpha brainwaves most when you are awake, but not very engaged in much of anything. The alpha state can include when you first wake up in the morning, or that time right before you fall asleep at night. Even though it sounds like you would be "out of it" when in an alpha state... this can be when some of your best ideas and decisions come. Beta: The beta waves are what we experience most often, and what you're experiencing right now. The beta state is the state where you are alert and active. This could be engaging in active reading, active conversation, physical activity, or just about anything else where you are fully alert. This state is where our brains tend to spend the most time. Gamma: Until recently, we had only discovered up through Beta waves as being the highest frequency brainwaves, but now scientists have introduced gamma waves. The gamma state is kind of like an ultra wired mode in your brain. These are the waves that allow us to get into the flow state, and go above and beyond what we might realize we are even capable of. Understanding how these brainwaves work can help you understand your brain better by tying certain aspects of psychology to the different states you can be in. If you understand what you should practice in an alpha state, versus what sticks better in gamma, you will be able to make the effort to keep track of how often you are experiencing these different states, and what is actually going on during that time. For more information like this, be sure to subscribe to the podcast, and come back every Sunday, where we will be discussing all sorts of topics to help you become smarter and learn more, both in and out of the classroom. ------------------ Justin Phillips: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_moctBGU-tfwSANYXl9OCg Facebook: https://facebook.com/jrpbusiness Instagram: https://instagram.com/jrpbusiness Twitter: https://twitter.com/jjustinrp Website: https://justinrp.net/ Gerard Mirabelli: Facebook: https://facebook.com/GerardMirabelliArt Instagram: https://instagram.com/gerardmirabelli.art ArtStation: https://artstation.com/GerardMirabelliArt

This week, we taught ourselves about the flow state of mind, and now we are going to teach you what we have learned. If you have ever heard of flow before, you probably just thought to yourself "what is flow?" It's not a term that is used all that often if you're not in the realm of psychology. The flow state is sort of like being "in the zone." You know? When you get so involved in whatever it is that you're doing, that you lose all sense of time and what's going on around you. You are just hyper focused on the task at hand. So what does this have to do with being a better student? After all, this is Star Student Sunday. Well let me tell you. With a better understanding of the flow state of mind, you might not be able to really control it, but you'll be able to recognize it and use it to its fullest potential when you have the chance. Understanding the flow state may help you if you have ever wondered how to get better focus, or how to focus on studying. Overall, it plays a role in being a better student, if you use it right. Now also keep in mind that we are NOT psychologists nor do we have any formal education in these matters. This segment of the podcast is designed to take what we have in experience, and what we learn through self-education in order to try and help you become a better student. If you want to know more details about the flow state, you can probably find episodes on it in just about any psychology podcast. ----------------------- Justin Phillips: Facebook: https://facebook.com/jrpbusiness Instagram: https://instagram.com/jrpbusiness Twitter: https://twitter.com/jjustinrp Website: https://justinrp.net/ Gerard Mirabelli: Facebook: https://facebook.com/GerardMirabelliArt Instagram: https://instagram.com/gerardmirabelli.art ArtStation: https://artstation.com/GerardMirabelliArt

She hosts “Planet Seniors” on Radio Kingston as a dedication to the idea that senior citizens are valuable members of our community whose voices should be given just as much “air time” as everyone else. Our conversation winds through various aspects of her rich life from women's rights, abortion rights, gay rights, spirituality, family, business and self care. Rita's show is live on Monday evenings from 8-9pm or anytime on the Radio Kingston archive.  Next I play my interview with Aliza Rose Theetge, a dynamic and confident 9 year old who's ready to be a women's activist.  She likes to point out that her initials spell ART, which she loves, and loves math, singing and dancing. She's been studying Marie Curie in school who's inspired her to become a women's activist. We talk about lots of things like math, art, singing, being scared, bus drivers, Marie Curie, being a big sister and golfing. I look forward to seeing her on the big screen some day! Gerard has just graduated with his Bachelor's Degree in Game Art from Full Sail University, and now we are getting even deeper into work on the podcast! This week we have what is technically our second (or maybe third) episode that was recorded in person, but this one is with a far better set up. Our very first episode was recorded in person, but it was only audio and it was recorded straight onto my Google Pixel 2. Then, we moved on and did an episode back around Black Friday where we had a webcam, awful lighting, and a condenser mic plopped right between us, and we did one straight shot. Now, we have three cameras set up, a couple of studio lights, two microphones, and some much better editing to show you today. So ultimately, we will tell you guys what is happening moving forward both with Gerard and his career, and with the podcast itself. We decided to use this opportunity to talk about what it's actually like when you just get out of college. Is the Bachelor's Degree all it's cracked up to be? Should you pursue further education? How hard might it be to find a job? Education seems to be a hotter topic than ever right now, but how many people even really know what it means to be educated? Are being smart and being educated the same thing? Can you be one without the other? Can you succeed without an education? Will you succeed with one? There are questions upon questions upon questions to be asked, so we are going to break down what it truly means to be educated, and then talk on that. If you are a college student, high school student, or just a life student.. it is important that you understand the most efficient ways to gather and retain information. It is not always those who are the smartest, or who have the highest IQ, that get the best grades. It is also not always those with the most powerful brains in their heads that have the most impact, or make the most money. If you want to be successful, you need to learn how to attract the information that you seek. It is less about having it all stored up in your head, and more about being able to find it when it is needed. When you have the ability to come up with almost any information you need in a short period of time... that is when you can consider yourself educated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you are enjoying this show, be sure to share it with your fellow students and other friends that might take something away from it. Real Estate Investing Today : Real Estate Investing | Wholesaling | Flipping | Funding | Self Directed IRA | Finding Deals |

Is Facebook losing its mojo and, if so, is it YOUR FAULT as a real estate investor? Find out how real estate may have BROKEN FACEBOOK in today’s episode. I’m Carole Ellis. This is episode 39. So is Facebook really losing its magic, and are real estate investors to blame? It looks like the social media behemoth could be heading for a rough patch according to some hard numbers recently released by Fortune Magazine. I’ll tell you all about those numbers in just a minute, but before we get to cold, hard, sad (for Facebook) numbers, I’d like to mention some numbers that will have you breaking out the confetti instead. Here are just a few: 2.3 million, 180,000, and 232. Confused? Don’t be. Those numbers all have to do with deals that a certain commercial real estate EXPERT who is also a frequent guest on this podcast has done recently, and let’s just say that the “big numbers” have to do with fast flips and property values (where she bought with none of her own money) and that “smaller” number, 232, has to do with the number of cash-flowing units in a certain building she recently acquired, with her students, from the bank. Intrigued? You should be! Did I mention the “Star Student” who bought the $2.3 million property is a stay-at-home grandmother? Get all the details NOW by heading right over to www.REI.Today/Important to access case studies, training, and lots of great information. Now, back to Facebook’s breakdown, such as it is, by the numbers…Here’s the nasty number at the heart of the problem: 21 percent. According to Fortune Magazine, Facebook users are sharing 21 percent LESS than they used to, and that’s a big problem because it indicates a disconnect between users and each other and between users and Facebook. “It’s a key vulnerability,” columnist Erin Griffith explained, adding that it makes the entire platform feel less like a “special and intimate place to share things” and more like a “big, impersonal, professional platform.” That’s bad news for Facebook because even though the platform makes its money via advertising, when it starts feeling impersonal, that makes it inherently less trustworthy and the value of the ad placed on the platform declines. So what does this have to do with real estate investors?Well, according to Erin (and a number of other analysts agree with her), the fact that so much of the content that is shared on Facebook these days is “professional,” meaning that it is sourced from another location rather than personally created, as a status update would be, lies at the heart of the Facebook dilemma. Because that content is often found elsewhere online, Facebook is in danger of losing its “identity,” she said, adding that the very things that attracted professionals and businesses, like real estate investors, to the platform is now detracting from the value they get by maintaining a presence there. She also noted that although sharing of personal information is down, that doesn’t mean Facebook use is down. In fact, 65 percent of Facebook’s monthly active users (who number 1.6 billion by the way) come back every single day.So how can you, as a real estate professional, use Facebook in a way that continues to garner you the most value for your time and money? Here are three suggestions:First, take the time to learn about Facebook advertising. At REI Today, we believe that Facebook ads, much like other targeted ads, may have a limited lifespan (there will always be the “next big thing,” after all) but if you learn to use them effectively, as long as those 104 million people are coming back every day to check in on the platform, effective, targeted advertising is going to get views and responses.Second, create a personal “oasis” within the Facebook community. You can create private groups on Facebook where you not only establish a sense of belonging among members, but where you can curate the content and make sure it’s not just something that can be read elsewhere online. You may restrict it to things of interest to group members, personal postings, and items on your own website, for example. Finally, work on lowering the bar for posting within your personal group on Facebook. Keep a close eye on your privacy settings so that people know that what they post with you will stay private and safe within the group. Buzzfeed writer Alex Kantrowitz recently pointed out that people don’t post personal feelings on Facebook anymore even though they still post personal milestones because a rogue post can easily cost a person their reputation or their job.
