    Talking drugs with Rod Bridge

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 22, 2019 43:17

Today we talk with Rod Bridge who founded the organisation, Sideffect. From their website - "Sideffect was started by our founder, Rodney Bridge, after the death of his beautifully talented and generous son, Preston. Preston died at the age of 16, after taking a synthetic form of LSD in February 2013, during his school ball after party. Following his family tragedy, Rod found out that the LSD substance was made up of 25inBome as well as a shopping list of other synthetic drugs. Preston lost his life that night based on one choice and had he known what he was taking, he would have made an entirely different decision. Sideffect was born out of that understanding, that our youth need to be educated on substance use and be empowered to make informed decisions, with the help of parents, teachers, and their community."Points in the conversation to note: In 2018 Sideffect reached 105,000 students across Western Australia. Being educated as a parent on drugs is so important in order to start a conversation. Early intervention is key in the fight against drugs.www.sideffect.org.auPart one of the 60 mins program - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6mYlFXiZkc

Having Home Ed gave me an excuse not to go out and my Agoraphobia got worse, living as a recluse for 10 years. In my Mid 20's I had a holiday to Perth to see my Grandparents who were ill. While over here I had an awesome spiritual experience and felt Kwinana would one day be my home. I went back to the UK after 2 months and started a journey of recovery. After 5 years I got the opportunity to come over on a 2 year student visa to study for a Diploma in Community Services and on completion of that I worked in Employment Services. I stayed in the industry 5 years and then left and have been training Mental Health First Aid ever since. I currently live in Kwinana, 5 mins away from where my Grandparents live.My passion is about talking about mental health especially for guys. 75% of suicides are male and part of that is that we don't talk about how we're travelling. I have lost 7 people in my life, all men. I think it's important we reach out to people and get them to talk.I run my own MHFA Training business now full time, I also film YouTube videos and just getting started again with podcasts.
