This week's episode dives into the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black—a stage where pride, teamwork, and resilience shine brighter than individual glory. The drama, the pressure, and the unity on display felt reminiscent of the ANZAC spirit: mateship, courage, endurance, and sacrifice for the greater collective. Just as ANZAC embodies the power of individuals coming together for something bigger than themselves, the Ryder Cup shows golf at its most communal, where every shot isn't just for the player, but for the team, the country, and the history books. And perhaps no moment captured that spirit more than Team USA's ferocious comeback attempts—a powerful reminder that you are never out of the fight.Follow our Social Media for all the best moments from the show:Pivot The Path Instagram - click here!SSWING YouTube - click here!SSWING Website - click here! In this compelling episode of "Why Should We Care about the Indo-Pacific," hosts Ray Powell and James Carouso welcome Joe Hockey, former Australian Treasurer and Ambassador to the United States. Hockey, who now heads Bondi Partners, offers unique insights into U.S.-Australia relations during both Trump administrations.Episode Highlights:Hockey shares his firsthand experience of "Trumpageddon" during the transition from Obama to Trump's first administration, describing it as a "political tsunami" that hit Washington DC. He contrasts Trump 1.0's disorganization with Trump 2.0's more predictable but aggressive "political blitzkrieg" approach. The conversation explores recent challenges in the alliance, including new tariffs on Australian steel and aluminum under Trump's second term. Hockey explains how Australia previously secured exemptions during Trump's first term by emphasizing their status as America's closest ally according to Republican voters and highlighting their trade deficit with the U.S.When discussing concerns about the reliability of the U.S. alliance, Hockey dismisses what he calls "alarmist" views, emphasizing the deep integration between the two nations' military and intelligence communities. He pointedly asks, "What is Plan B?" when considering alternatives to the U.S. alliance, especially in light of recent Chinese naval exercises near Australia. The discussion also covers Australia's upcoming May 2025 election, defense spending needs, AUKUS submarine acquisition challenges, and the complex relationship with China. Hockey advocates for increasing Australia's defense spending to around 3% of GDP while encouraging more private sector involvement in defense infrastructure.Hockey concludes by sharing the touching origin story of his "100 Years of Mateship" initiative, which commemorated the centennial of U.S. and Australian troops fighting side by side at the Battle of Hamel in World War I – the beginning of an unbroken alliance that continues to this day.Don't miss this insightful conversation about one of America's most crucial alliances in an increasingly complex Indo-Pacific region.Follow us on X, @IndoPacPodcast; or on LinkedIn or BlueSky at our show title, Why Should We Care About the Indo-Pacific?Follow Ray Powell on X (@GordianKnotRay) or on LinkedIn.Follow Jim Carouso on LinkedIn.Our podcast is produced by Ian Ellis-Jones and IEJ Media (on X @ianellisjones or LinkedIn).This podcast is sponsored by BowerGroupAsia, a strategic advisory firm that specializes in the Indo-Pacific.

This is an extremely special episode, with one of our Ukrainian friends, Julia. With world events currently, it's hard to think of the right words to express ourselves. Luckily, and one of the positive aspects currently, is that there are many examples of exemplary human behaviour. This is especially so in Ukraine, where people are helping each other out like never before. In Australia, we call this mateship. And so, with Julia, we talk about mateship and how it is being displayed in Ukraine at the moment. We learn some similarities between Australian and Ukrainian culture and how this can play a role in learning languages. We suspect that a lot of people are interested in learning Ukrainian at the moment, so we look at how some of the current cultural strengths of Ukrainians can be used to learn a language. We also have a go at pronouncing and learning some Ukrainian vocabulary and what you can do to demonstrate your mateship towards Ukraine. We hope this episode is as inspiring for you as it is for us. Out of class is a new segment of the Life Long Learner podcast. Out of class is the informal conversation between Gines, Matt, and Ben. The fellas this week chat about what is going on in their worlds at the moment. Matt chats about making the most of the recent great weather and putting physical activity and freedom as a number one priority. They explore the notion of systems in business and life to free up the time to give more freedom. Ben talks about the challenges in ‘getting it right' and why we make things way more complicated than it needs to be. Especially nutrition, eating has become super complicated. They asked what did, ‘they used to do in the old day…?' Is there are a part of the ego coming out to solve a complicated problem. Often the answer is simple. Simplicity can distill many things for us to be able to digest. However, in today's society simple is not sexy. Specialists know more and more about less and less until the ultimate specialist everything about nothing. Currently, Australia is currently getting pulled apart.
