Issue 2 is an unnecessary, permanent change to our constitution that would eliminate the democratic principle of one person, one vote — allowing just 41% of voters to block important issues. This November, protect majority rule: Vote AGAINST Issue 2. We interviewed Kwami Abdul-Bey who is the Elections Coordinator and Organizer for the Arkansas Public Policy Panel. Learn more, donate, or volunteer: www.protectARrights.org All Arkansans want the freedom to make decisions that affect our lives, and ballot initiatives allow us to exercise that freedom. But now, politicians and wealthy special interests are trying to fool us into giving away our freedom to make decisions so they can get what they want, instead of what the people want. Issue #2 would permanently change our constitution to make it harder to exercise our freedom to decide on important issues that affect our state. • Politicians don't have to win elections by 60% • #arleg doesn't have to pass laws by 60% • Why should the people be held to a different standard? This week, we meet Corina Kwami, an American jazz singer, tap dancer and performer, and a passionate music historian. A “bridge builder”, she uses her background and her PhD in social science from the University College of London to bring a global renaissance variety to her playing and storytelling. We explore the origins of jazz and the music's social role in the world today, and what Fine wine could learn from jazz in terms of interpretation, blending, control and the power of bringing various voices together.
Negro Spirituals consist of a set of songs that were created by slaves during their time of slavery and were sung from spirit to Spirit. They carry messages from God to us, and today we can still build inspiration from these songs. The Fisk Jubilee Singers are an American a cappella ensemble that performs Negro spirituals originally sung by slaves prior to the Civil War. The first group of Singers arranged the music and took it on the road beginning in 1871 introducing the public to a new genre that remains a vibrant musical tradition today. We had the chance to speak with Dr. Paul T. Kwami, Musical Director of the Fisk Jubilee Singers. Kwami was born in Ghana, West Africa, one of seven children. His father, a musician, taught him piano, violin, theory, and conducting. He studied music at Ghana's National Academy of Music and taught there until immigrating to the US in 1983 as a student at Fisk University. He promptly joined the Fisk Jubilee Singers. After graduating Fisk in 1985 he continued to study music at Western Michigan University and graduated in 1987 with the Master of Music degree. In the spring of 1994 he was solicited to serve as part-time director of the Fisk Jubilee Singers. In the fall of the same year, he was promoted to full time faculty member in the music department and became the Musical Director of the ensemble. He is the first African to direct the Fisk Jubilee Singers, and the first to hold the Curb-Beaman Chair position. He is currently the Mike Curb Jubilee Singers Endowed Chair. Kwami received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting from the American Conservatory of Music. Kwami, a composer and arranger, feels a deep connection between Negro spirituals and the music of his Motherland. “The music we sing today helps to bridge the gap between Africans and African-Americans,” he says. “I am reminded of my life in Ghana whenever I hear the Fisk Jubilee Singers sing the Negro spirituals.” As the Fisk Jubilee Singers are celebrating 150 years this year, we thought this was the perfect time to cover this topic. Top Ten Lessons from Kwami Sefa Kayi - #KwamiQUOTESMentoring. I didn't get access to my role models like Sam Jonah, Kwaku Sakyi Addo, Mike Eghan and Tommy Annan Forson when I was younger. I would have asked them questions as a reference point for decision making.Early Influencers. I was influenced by my mother, who presented Latin American Rythms at GBC, and George Crabbe, who put me on his laps at age ten and asked me a few questions on radio. But I never wanted the microphone.Military Attraction. My father was in the army; I grew up admiring the officers, their starchy uniforms, military vehicles and wanting to join the army. My mother didn't want that and with the help of people like Alex Ofori Karikari and Janet Owusu gently and prayerfully steered me towards writing and acting.Radio. Ekow Budu Manuel gave me my first introduction to a radio role. He showed me the ropes and gave me the opportunity on a youth show called ‘Leaders of Tomorrow'.Professionalism versus Ratings. Learning under Sam Yeboah, it wasn't about sensationalism and what sells. It was about research, informing, educating and entertaining. Today, some focus solely on entertaining, and it can get noisy.Role of Komla. Komla Dumor was at different times a fan, a friend, a competitor and again a friend. He brought life and verve to his show and rose to unimaginable heights. We often compared notes, even as competitors.Broadcasting in Twi. It was a totally new territory for me and it was almost a gamble. Komla thought it was crazy because his preference was for me to replace him at Joy when he was going to Harvard.Vocabulary. There is a need to constantly update your vocabulary to cover incidents and subject matters that do not feature in your regular reportage. Broadcast Focus. I find myself handling more serious issues today than I did in the past. Things were politically more heated 20 years ago: but where we are as a nation requires a stronger developmental orientation.Board Role. I accepted a board role at the National Petroleum Authority because I decided I had to step up and contribute to solving national problems. I pray that I can make a meaningful impact.

Meet Kwami Williams, co-founder and CEO of MoringaConnect, and Brian Lowery, Stanford Graduate School of Business professor, to learn how one Ghanaian entrepreneur overcame fires, floods, theft, and COVID to build a more resilient and successful company.Kwami's path to co-founding a social agriculture venture in Ghana based on the native Moringa tree was anything but straightforward. As a Ghanaian-American MIT graduate in aerospace engineering, his first love was flight. But on a trip back to Ghana, after 10 years in the U.S., he decided to focus his life on improving the lives of the people in his home country and continent.Five years into running the business, they were helping smallholder farmers plant Moringa trees and then adding value to the raw materials with a flagship consumer brand. Everything started to unravel in 2019, starting with a wildfire that burned over 15,000 trees, then a factory fire, floods, and a robbery. 2020 only added fuel to the fire with COVID.Kwami knew he needed help to tackle these back-to-back crises, and chose honesty over pride.“If I could give one piece of advice to an early-stage entrepreneur, I would tell them to build an amazing team of people who they could go to war with because the hard days, the bad days, the battles will come.”“I just acknowledged the fact that I have no idea how to bounce back from this. So I just committed to vulnerability from the get-go. And I committed to communicating as much as possible from the get-go.”Brian Lowery agrees that vulnerability is vital to both personal and professional growth. As a Professor of Organizational Behavior at Stanford Graduate School of Business, he is an expert on the psychology of leadership and training future leaders like Kwami. According to Brian:“The leader is not the person with the answers. The leader is the person who brings people together to help figure out what the best answers are around a range of issues.”Kwami and his team found ways to overcome adversity by taking one slow, intentional step at a time and asking themselves:“Why is this happening? What can we learn from it? Let's also pause and ask ourselves. Okay. What can we start? What can we stop and what should continue? And once those ideas materialize, we just say, what is the smallest version of that we can commit to and be consistent with?”And, despite facing a 90% reduction in revenue, the team stayed true to their mission of giving back to the community with give-back campaigns supporting COVID health workers and racial justice organizations. Today, the TrueMoringa brand has taken off and is poised to raise its first equity round in the second half of 2021. And most importantly to Kwami, they've planted over 2 million trees and are serving over 5,000 women and family farmers across Ghana.Listen to Kwami's inspiring story and Brian's insights to learn how to build resiliency in yourself and your company so you can handle whatever life throws at you.Resources:Know What You See with Brian Lowery Podcast on Apple PodcastsKnow What You See with Brian Lowery Podcast on SpotifyThe Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben HorowitzSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Well hello hello and welcome to Episode 3 of the EoA podcast. Or as they say in Ghana, mema wo akwaaba, which means, I welcome you! My name is Kimber and I am your host. You guessed it, today we are in beautiful Ghana, West Africa, and I have the great pleasure of introducing you to Julius Kwami Tsatsu. In this chapter, we'll be laying the groundwork for what has become a 3 part miniseries about the successes and complexities of Julius's deep community-based work as a man wearing many hats! He is a proud citizen of Ghana, a husband and father, a social entrepreneur, a farmer and a FT project officer for Right to Play international. I don't know when he rests! Our first glimpse into his world is through the lens of his social entrepreneurship. Having encountered an issue repeatedly in his NGO work, Julius researched the problem and created a solution, he calls Tecky Tap – a foot operated hand washing device. His experiences bringing it to communities echo those NGOs often have, when bringing ideas to communities, so it's deeply helpful to hear his story. At the same time, they raised money in support of their beloved university. This concert was held at the National Gallery of Art on Sunday, January 17, 2016.

This was taken from an article written by William Douglas on www.nhl.com Elijah Roberts has his eyes on the prize. But he also has a Plan B, just in case. Roberts, a 21-year-old undrafted defenseman who was an overage player in the Ontario Hockey League last season, is still chasing his dream of playing in the NHL by taking a longer, less-traveled route. He's committed to play in 2020-21 for Ryerson University in Toronto, where he's enrolled in the sport media program. He's already putting his hockey and budding media skills to use as co-host of Soul On Ice: The Podcast with award-winning filmmaker Kwame Damon Mason and Los Angeles Kings forward prospect Akil Thomas. The podcast recently joined the NHL stable of podcasts. "It's still Plan A to play pro," said Roberts, who scored 108 points (23 goals, 85 assists) in 294 OHL games for Niagara and Kitchener. "My main goal is to come out of Ryerson, get a contract and hopefully still make the NHL." But working in sports media, specifically broadcasting, is Roberts' Plan B. Studying it in college and co-hosting the podcast is giving Roberts a head start in the business, whether it's after a professional playing career or if he doesn't reach the pros. "Getting the chance to do this podcast; to learn from Kwame, who's been in radio for over 30 years, and with certain guests that we have -- (Hockey Night in Canada hosts) Ron MacLean and David Amber -- to learn from some of those guys has taught me a lot," he said. "It's going to give me a big advantage, and I'm learning a lot already." Roberts listens attentively to his on-air guests and soaks up critiques that some of the guests and Mason, director of the 2015 Black hockey history documentary "Soul on Ice: Past, Present & Future," offer when the microphones are off. In this episode here are some of topics we cover: Playing with the Kitchener Rangers Ryerson University and studying sports media What made him interested in sports media? What do tap dancing, music and social change have in common? How can we create environments where dreams are possible? Corina Kwami and I talked about learning to listen through songs and tap dancing, about losing the ability to learn together, about what care means during a pandemic. Corina Kwami is a Renaissance woman whose mission is to celebrate jazz and what it offers innovators on and off stage. On stage as a public speaker, singer or tap dancer, she has performed in countries across the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia with her own band and as a guest, as a TEDx speaker and in the innovation lab space. She has been recognised for her "impressive grasp of what jazz can teach us about leadership, partnerships, and innovative thinking" at the UNLEASH Innovation Lab. Her work cuts across the arts and sciences, music and dance and recalls the past to inspire future innovation. Based in London, she plays with her band Corina Kwami & the Swing Selection, collaborates in the jazz, tap and swing circuit and continues to explore ways of building linkages between the arts and sciences. To say that Emily and Kwame are changing the world would be an understatement. Our guest this week, Emily Cunningham, is the Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of True Moringa, and shares her story of bringing the benefits of “the miracle tree” to the U.S. In 2011, Emily’s co-founder Kwami had his sights set on becoming a rocket scientist. Emily was in the midst of her third year of studying development economics at Harvard, frustrated by the disconnect between the academic literature and the realities of poverty on the ground. Coming from different worlds and backgrounds, they traveled to northern Ghana together with MIT’s D-Lab. There, they were united by a desire to take on the challenges smallholder farmers face daily without access to patient capital, quality inputs, technical training, or guaranteed markets. ENTER THE MORINGA TREE. During their time in Ghana, Kwami and Emily were introduced to what was known locally as “the miracle tree.” The tree thrives in arid climates. It helps the crops around it grown better. It can be intercropped with subsistence crops mitigating risk to farmers. The leaves, with more vitamin A than carrots, more protein than eggs, more calcium than milk and more iron than spinach have the potential to end malnutrition and provide a stable food source to farmers. The oil seeds, rich in anti-oxidants and moisturizing agents produce one of nature’s finest cosmetic oils for hair and skin care. The solution to poverty, malnutrition, and hunger was growing in their own backyards. INTRODUCING TRUE MORINGA. The more they learned about the harmful chemicals in synthetic cosmetics and hair relaxers, the more passionate they became about bringing conscious consumers a natural alternative that actually worked. Putting their engineering and business acumen to work, they went back to Cambridge to devise a proprietary extraction system that could be brought closer to the farmers, adding value and jobs on the ground, and producing the highest quality natural oil nature has to offer. Today, they serve over 5,000 small farming families, they have planted over 2 million trees, and they have increased the farmer incomes by 10x. Can you say power duo?! Check out True Moringa here!! Break the Chain is an award-winning documentary that addresses the often ""hidden-in-plain-sight"" issue of Human Trafficking within Michigan communities and the United States. The film chronicles two survivors of Human Trafficking - providing a detailed look at how trafficking goes unnoticed within our backyards. Kwami and Debbie were enslaved and exploited as children for numerous years within the US before anyone took notice. Both survivors of sex and labor trafficking recount their experiences with a trafficker who promised them a better life. Accompanying their stories of abuse and survival are interviews with those actively working to raise awareness and create creative solutions to combat this hidden global issue. The film strays from the traditional sensationalized ways of exploring human trafficking issues and helps us learn that we are all connected to this billion dollar industry, and we have the power to change lives by choosing how we consume our information, what we support, and ultimately, how we break the chain.
