It's nice to have friends in high places, and in water, there are few places higher than the presidency of the Water Environment Federation, the core trade body for the wastewater industry. Ifetayo Venner and I got to know each other in 2017 when we both spoke at the opening session of WEFTEC, WEF's annual gathering for the wastewater world, and we spoke in a cavernous room filled with about 5000 pros talking through our stories of how we got into water. Ifetayo's was a lot better than mine, and no surprise. She is an enormously accomplished professional, Past President of WEF and a Senior VP at Arcadis, the massive engineering consultancy. She has led the creation of some very serious projects in wastewater, and I wanted to have her on The Fundamental Molecule to help us understand the role of engineering consultancies in the sector, what the world looks like from her point of view, the opportunities in infrastructure renewal, and of course, her own path through all of it. She really is great. Please enjoy my conversation with Ifetayo Venner.  Subscribe to The Fundamental Molecule here: https://www.burntislandventures.com/the-fundamental-molecule For the full show notes, transcript, and links to mentioned content, check out the episode page here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-fundamental-molecule/id1714287205

According to the report, the average annual temperature in Tokyo "has increased by 2.86 degrees Celsius since 1900, more than three times as fast as the world's average." The Olympics are due to run from July 23 to August 8 -- a time when Japan usually experiences its highest annual temperatures, which are soaring even higher in the warming climate. "I think we're certainly approaching a danger-zone," Great Britain rower and Olympic hopeful Melissa Wilson told the study's authors. "It's a horrible moment when you see athletes cross the line, their bodies fling back in total exhaustion, and then not rise up." Some events at the upcoming Summer Games have already been moved away from Tokyo amid heat concerns, including the marathon, which will take place nearly 500 miles north of the Japan capital in Sapporo where temperatures are expected to be much cooler. Canceling Tokyo Olympics is 'essentially off the table,' says IOC member Dick Pound (CNN)International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound says he believes the Olympic Games will go ahead this year and says the option of canceling the event is "essentially off the table." Speaking to CNN's Selina Wang, Pound insisted that all indications suggest a "bubble" around those participating in Tokyo can be maintained but he stopped short of guaranteeing that it will be completely safe amid the pandemic. "Nobody can guarantee anything. I mean, let's be reasonable on that," he said. "But all the indications are that the bubble can be created and maintained and daily, or whatever the frequency of tests will be, will identify any indications that there may be some people having the virus that are there. They'll be put into isolation right away." Earlier this year, Pound -- who is the longest-serving member of the IOC -- put the likelihood of the Games going ahead at about 75% but now says the probability is much higher, with experts learning more about the virus everyday. "None of the folks involved in the planning and the execution of the Games is considering cancellation," he added.   What could happen if the Tokyo Olympics get canceled? (CNN)With a little over two months until the start of the Tokyo Olympics, the possibility of a cancellation looms large over the Games. As Japan battles a fourth wave of coronavirus infections and a state of emergency in Tokyo and other prefectures remains in place until the end of the month, there is mounting pressure from health experts, business leaders and the Japanese public to call off the Games. Last week, the Tokyo Medical Practitioners Association, an organization of about 6,000 doctors in Tokyo, penned a letter calling for a cancellation, while a petition which garnered 350,000 signatures in nine days in support of a cancellation has been submitted to organizers. Also last week, the CEO of leading Japanese e-commerce company Rakuten said that holding the Games amid the pandemic amounts to a "suicide mission" -- among the strongest opposition so far voiced by a business leader. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has remained adamant that the Olympics, already postponed by a year amid the pandemic, will be able to get underway on July 23. Organizers have released a playbook, the final version of which is expected next month, outlining a series of countermeasures that they say will ensure the Games can take place in a safe and secure way, even as thousands of athletes from around the world descend on Tokyo. With the Winter Olympics in Beijing now less than a year away, officials have also said that the Games won't be postponed again and that a cancellation would be the likeliest option if it's deemed unsafe to hold the Games from the rescheduled start date in July.   What's New in the 303: Bolder Boulder Courses HOW THE BOLDER ON THE RUN 10K WORKS Just pick the location, day and time you want when you register. 2 hour blocks available from 6:30am-8:30pm, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday over Memorial Day weekend. If you want to get better, you need to surround yourself with people who don’t shy away at telling what you NEED to hear, not what you WANT to hear. My guest today is such a person. And between you and me, having him on the show is a bit selfish, because I want to hear how he maximizes every day to ensure his personal objectives are accomplished.  Today’s guest is Daniel “Danny” Bauer. Danny and I met through our Mastermind several years ago and over the years I’ve been in awe of his productivity. When he sets out a goal for himself he always reaches the finish line.  Danny Bauer is the Chief Ruckus Maker at Better Leaders Better Schools (BLBS). He launched the BLBS Podcast in September 2015. With over one million downloads, the BLBS show is the most influential podcast available for educational leaders.   He is the author of The Better Leaders Better Schools Roadmap, which was released as an Amazon #1 New Release, and he is working on a new book tentatively titled: The Mastermind: Unlocking the Potential Within Every School Leader.   He is a catalyst for change and he uses his passion for productivity to teach coaches, businesses, teams, and professionals the skills they need to ensure their objectives become reality.    Bottom line: If you want to improve your productivity, Danny has the tools you need to make it happen.  In the words of today’s guest, keep making a ruckus,    -Trace     Danny Bauer will walk us through this Focus Funnel Can I eliminate a task?/Do I have to do it?   Can a robot do this better?/Can it be automated?  Can another human do this better than me?/Can I delegate this?  What if I procrastinate on purpose?   If you cannot procrastinate, you have to concentrate.    Timestamps:   James’ Challenge: “Convert 300 mg/L Nitrite (as NO2) to Nitrite (NaNO2).” [3:50]  Introducing my friend and the Chief Ruckus Maker, Danny Bauer [6:26]  The value of being in a Mastermind group together [14:15]  Better Leader Better Schools [18:52]  Core Values, Sticky Values, your Own Personal Philosophy, and investing in yourself [19:38]  Productivity tools, Focus Funnel, and always getting better [25:35]  Objectives, Key Results, and Time Blocking [33:23]  The one thing you want Scaling Up Nation to know [40:33]  Lightning Round Questions [42:48]     Quotes:  “When you force yourself to learn something new, you force yourself to grow.” - Trace Blackmore  “I realized that I was my own bottleneck and I created my own ceilings.” -Daniel Bauer  “Authenticity, belonging, and a challenging environment, that leads to life in leadership transformation.” -Daniel Bauer  “If you are considering joining a Mastermind group. Today I’m talking about sales. I know, I know, sales can sometimes feel like an icky word, but an excellent salesperson is a professional who is always trying to solve their clients’ problems, instead of trying to sell them a product. And before we can help our clients find solutions, we need to be able to clearly share Why we do it, How we do it, and What we do.   In this podcast I’m going to walk us through the lessons I learned after reading Simon Sinek’s fantastic book, “Start With Why.” This book changed how I sell because it helped me understand why water treatment is so important, to begin with. And the book made me realize that if I couldn’t put my deep feelings of love and admiration for water into words, I’ll never be able to clearly express to a client why water treatment is essential.   In the book, Simon Sinek’ writes about “The Golden Circle”, which I’m going to break down for you in detail in the podcast but I wanted you to have this visual as a reference. **Use The Golden Circle Graphic in place of Trace’s headshot in the podcast description ( I have two color options, use whichever one you think looks best)    Bottom line: This podcast is going to give you the tools you need to share with your clients why we love working in the best profession in the world.   Your roadside friend, as you travel from client to client.     -Trace     Applying Simon Sinek’s The Golden Circle to water treatment:  Why: We exist to promote the stewardship of the world's most valuable substance, water.  How: We optimize how water works in your system by promoting its longevity and efficiency. Nation! I am so excited to introduce you to the man who leads my weekly Mastermind group, Aaron Walker.  Aaron Walker has founded more than a dozen companies over the past 42 years. He attributes much of his success to having surrounded himself with his Mastermind counterparts. Aaron spent a decade meeting weekly with Dave Ramsey, Dan Miller, Ken Abraham, and other outstanding entrepreneurs. Aaron is the founder of Iron Sharpens Iron Mastermind that now hosts 20 groups with National and International members. Aaron lives in Nashville, Tennessee, and he has so many wonderful stories and advice to share today!  As you know, I lead several Mastermind groups myself. A large reason I can pour into other leaders in the water treatment industry is because of the individuals I meet with weekly in the Mastermind group. Aaron says to think about a Mastermind as "Your own personal board of directors" who help you personally and professionally. Life is way too difficult to do it alone. We are built as human beings to work with other people. I've found that joining a Mastermind can help you grow through vulnerability, coaching, honesty, and camaraderie.   If you are a water treater interested in joining a Mastermind, please visit my Scalinguph2o.com/mastermind to learn how together we can raise up the water treatment industry.    Timestamps:   Upcoming Events [1:30]  James' Challenge: "Review all your accounts to ensure you've lived up to all your obligations. Top Takeaways We are all communicators whether it’s in your title or not. Communicate early and often whether it’s good news or bad news. We are feeling machines that think – driven by our experiences and emotions. Shownotes: 4:54 Tell us about the WEFTEC2019 Communications Camp and what the biggest highlights were for you. Span the range of communications from crisis to social media. Discussed research, storytelling and branding. We are Humans first. We are all communicators. 8:38 What stood out from the case studies presented at the Comms Camp? Ability to work through children to enhance communication and get your message out. Opportunity to educate the community on the importance of pollution and stormwater. 12:11 What were some ah-ha moments from the camp? Validation in the importance of communicating early and often, whether it’s good news or bad news. Our role is to inform the community. You don’t have to have every piece of information before you speak to the community. It’s okay to offer what you have and let them know you will update when more information is available. 14:05 What does the lizard brain do when we share bad news? The brain is accessing experiences and emotions. The brain burns 20% of the energy your body uses. 90% of that is subconscious. We are feeling machines that think.  Marketing is about providing value and solving problems. Your product solves your audience’s problem and not the other way around. Getting through to the lizard brain is key and takes strategy. 23:05 An example from the Comms Camp: contrasting. Need to show the before and after. The with and without versions. One strong message – limit the claims and benefits to three. Speak with visuals to bring people in. 27:53 The Lightning Round. Infinite Possibilities – Mike Dooley. Take a deep breath and stop. Imagine being tagged “a world expert.” That’s exactly how a number of Professor Jackson’s peers characterize him. Indeed, noted endowed professors at Purdue and Rice universities recently wrote about him: “Dr. Jackson’s major research focus is biological wastewater treatment, and Andrew is a recognized international leader in that field,” and, “[He] is unquestionably a world expert on the transport, fate, and remediation of perchlorate in the environment.” Because of his expertise, Professor Jackson was recently invited to go to Antarctica as a member of a field team of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The field team is part of a research group that focuses on Mars exploration and the search for life on Mars. They used Antarctica as a model for Mars, and since perchlorate has been found on Mars, Professor Jackson was invited to participate on the Antarctica trip. His grant record, including more than $2.3 million in competitive awards over 13 years, attests to his mastery in the field of environmental engineering. Apparently, his colleagues in the Whitacre College of Engineering also agree, since they have recognized him as a top departmental and college-level researcher on several occasions. As a teacher, Professor Jackson receives high marks both from undergraduate and graduate students through course evaluations. His success in assisting graduate students in master’s and doctoral programs is also well above the norm. On the service side, Professor Jackson is the academic adviser for all environmental engineering majors, faculty adviser for the student chapter of the Water Environment Federation, and has recently been appointed graduate adviser for the environmental and water resources area of civil engineering. He also is an associate editor of the world-recognized journal Air Water & Soil Pollution. Professor Jackson also has served on the editorial boards of two other respected journals. If these efforts are not enough to inform of his teaching and research, Professor Jackson has unselfishly served as external reviewer for the National Science Foundation’s small business development grant programs. Additionally, he currently is serving on the steering committee for the annual NASA Life Support Conference (i.e., The International Conference on Environmental Systems, or ICES). Taken together, we consider that his roles as research world expert, notable teacher, and unselfish contributor to his discipline – coupled with his ability to bring such experiences together for the benefits of students, faculty, and staff at TTU – all make a strong case for the integrated scholarship of Professor Andrew Jackson.
