Director Michael Showalter recounts the path to Sundance history with The Big Sick. After working with comedian Kumail Nanjiani on his previous film, Showalter read the script Kumail and his wife Emily V. Gordon wrote about how their relationship overcame both cultural clashes and a mysterious illness, and knew he had to direct it. Encouraging honest and organic performances from his actors is a Showalter specialty, and the combination of a great script with brilliant improvisation made for on-screen magic. The film premiered at Sundance where it sold for a record-breaking number, and remains a culturally important film that asks what it means to be an American.

It’s actually really rude to heckle a podcaster, so no shouting “Whoo!” while you’re listening to this episode—or else we might fall in love. I talked about what makes ‘The Big Sick’ so delightfully charming, revolutionary for the romcom genre, and a milestone for cultural representation on film. The movie may not have won any Oscars, but it won my freaking heart! 2 films down, 393 go. Please wish me luck in my future endeavors of watching an insane amount of movies. Kazan co-stars in HBO's limited series 'The Plot Against America,' an adaptation of Philip Roth's 2004 novel. It imagines a world in which aviator Charles Lindbergh defeated Franklin D. Roosevelt in the race for the presidency, moving the country toward fascism. We talk about encountering sexism in Hollywood, and how the HBO series made her think about her family history differently. Kazan also starred in 'The Big Sick,' 'Ruby Sparks,' and she co-wrote 'Wildlife' with her partner Paul Dano.

In self-isolation we're all in a coma of sorts, so why not tackle a coma movie?!?! In this episode of Movie For Two, we, just like 'The Big Sick', find rays of light and humour against a rather bleak and frustrating backdrop. While chuckling along to the movie's array of quirky and sharp lines, we discuss the film's unique arc and concept, chat about its relatability that's delivered by genuinely real characters, ask whether the whole movie defies description or categorisation, and wonder whether Emily should be getting free post-coital Uber rides.
You probably need some laughs more than ever, and we can definitely provide them with this month's episode. Our dead pilot is Eternally Yours from Joe Port & Joe Wiseman (The Office, New Girl), about a family of normal looking but emotionally closed off, stuck-together-for-eternity vampires. If you think there's no fresh spins left in the vampire genre, you need to listen to this one. In Andrew's interview, you’ll hear about Joe & Joe's first show business gigs, including the insane, no-longer existent job of Night PA, delivering scripts in the wee hours. They talk about how far having a great attitude can take you in this business, the lessons they’ve learned through their long careers, and what they look for in people when they’re staffing a show. Pure fun from two great writers. Enjoy! Eternally Yours stars Ed Weeks as Charles, Briga Heelan as Liz, Asif Ali as Max, Vella Lovell as Emma, Tony Cavalero as Jesse, Yassir Lester as Benji, Matt Walsh as Mort/Sigmund Freud, Mindy Sterling as Phyllis/Woman/Kristen Stewart, Brendan Scannell as Steve The Blood Guy/Man, David Fumero as Henry, and Andrew Reich with stage directions. It's been a long, strange, sometimes underwhelming trip to the Oscar Nominations but we're here to share our immediate reactions. We give you our thoughts on why certain movies are heading to the red carpet and others got snubbed and we also try to make sense of why the film Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri has become a frontrunner. We celebrate nominations for Get Out, The Big Sick, Logan, Mudbound and Lady Bird and share our gratitude to whomever was genius enough to book Tiffany Haddish to announce the nominations. Plus Sean makes his case for why Black Panther should have received an Oscar nomination THIS year! He's not joking! And we end the show with The Big Sell. Sean rates Amita's Big Sell from last time, Kelela's "Frontline," and then Big Sells Amita an article by Alissa Wilkinson (one of his favorite culture critics) on the backlash against Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri. Every year more movies hit theaters than any sane person could ever hope to try to see. Yet we here at WIRED are crazy enough to try to see as many as we can. And in the process we often catch films that might fall under the radar (or just get overlooked in lieu of a second, or third, viewing of Thor: Ragnarok or Star Wars: The Last Jedi).
We have spent hours upon hours sitting in dark theaters watching some of the most talked about films of the year and are ready to share our final "Best of" list of 2017! This year, we're focusing on the performances that captivated us, made us laugh, cry and gave us all the feels. From Daniel Kaluuya's portrayal as a boyfriend slowly awakening to the horrors of his girlfriend's family in Get Out to Saoirse Ronan playing a emotional teenager in Lady Bird, to the complex relationship between Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart in Logan, 2017 has gifted us with some incredible performances by some of our favorite actors and a few new faces as well. Amita's Favorite Performances: Frances McDormand in Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri Michael Stuhlbarg in Call Me By Your Name Read how Michael Stuhlbarg and Director Luca Guadagnino crafted this pivotal scene here Brooklynn Prince in The Florida Project Saoirse Ronan in Lady Bird Kumail Nanjiani in The Big Sick Denzel Washington in Roman J. Israel, Esq. Betty Gabriel in Get Out Allison Janney in I, Tonya Sally Hawkins in The Shape of Water Sean's Favorite Performances: Patrick Stewart & Hugh Jackman in Logan Samuel L. This week we discuss the film, television, music AND music videos that have grabbed our attention! First up, we highlight some of our favorite new music videos from Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar and Grimes featuring Janelle Monae. These artists are creating work that's thought provoking and gorgeous. Then, we discuss the depiction of South Asian interracial relationships on television and in film. Our conversation is inspired by a recent article that critiques the lack of Asian love interests in the works of South Asian creators like Aziz Ansari, Mindy Kaling, Kumail Nanjiani and Hasan Minhaj. We tackle the issues of personal expression, cultural responsibility and the need to see Brown Love on the screen. Finally in The Big Sell, Amita rates Sam Dew's cover of the Bill Withers song "Use Me" and then she gives what Sean calls, "the greatest big sell in the history of the show!" It's not because of what she sells - but how she sells it. Let's just say Sean likes it when Amita shares personal info. Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
In Episode 57 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. sifts through mountains of Judd Apatow-produced films to find the very best of the bunch in a new edition of Let's Talk About SIX. His latest, The Big Sick, is becoming one of the most talked-about films of the year, but does the Michael Showalter film, starring Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter and Ray Romano really live up to all the hype preceding its wide release? Let's take a closer look at this comedy/drama and break it down for ourselves We're excited to hear your feedback as the show continues to evolve.
