Dean's Chat hosts, Drs. Jensen and Richey, welcome Dr. Lawrence Ford, currently practicing in Kaiser Permanente Oakland Hospital. Dr. Ford has had an exceptional career in podiatric surgery. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of California, Irvine. He went on to complete his Podiatric Medical School degree with California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco, California. He then went on to do a three-year surgical residency program with Northwest Podiatric Foundation -Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, WA. Join us as we hear about his experience working with Dr. Sigvard T. Hansen at Harborview Medical Center. Listen, as we discuss the history of how relationship building fostered a collaboration between orthopedics and podiatry to progress the field of podiatric surgery for resident education. He discussed how transparency and excellence helped to foster new opportunities and practice with his full scope and capacity. Dr. Ford has served in multiple leadership roles, his most recent contributions as part of the education committee for the AO Basic and Advanced course development, past Residency director for the Kaiser Permanente SF Bay Area foot and Ankle residency program, previous department chair for podiatric surgery, ABFAS oral exam committee and communications committee. He has lectured at multiple ACFAS events and other national meetings in the topics of podiatric surgery, Trauma and reconstruction. Listen as he discusses the importance of research and how it helped impact his career to work with the residents and the residency program and scratch the itch of asking curiosity questions. Dr. Ford focuses his treatment philosophy around, evaluating the root cause from a biomechanical and functional etiology, and then focusing treatment on that cause as he says treating the symptoms without regard for the etiology, leads to frustration. He has a particular interest in mechanical engineering, especially how faulty mechanics can impact muscle imbalance and have progressive development of foot ankle pain. As Dr. Richey's former residency director he had an direct impact on her own career and now as her friend and mentor, she gives some touching remarks about her gratitude to him for both large transformational lessons as well as small but highly impactful moments.  In his time away from the podiatric profession Dr. Ford enjoys seeking time outdoors, including a variety of hiking camping, backpacking, kayaking, and backcountry skiing as well as being an avid Tottenham soccer fan! Tune in to learn more about Dr. Baker's expertise in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery at the Weil Foot and Ankle Institute in Lincoln Park, Chicago area. One of the key points discussed in the podcast episode is the trend toward more specialized fellowships in podiatry. Dr. Jeff Baker highlighted the importance of fellowships in providing opportunities for subspecialization within the field of podiatry. He mentioned that fellowships are a way to further specialize and gain additional training in specific areas of interest, such as research, reconstructive surgery, sports medicine, limb lengthening, and deformity correction. Dr. Baker shared his personal experience of completing a fellowship in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery at the Weill Foot and Ankle Institute. He emphasized how his fellowship training allowed him to subspecialize in deformity correction and limb lengthening, which has become his area of expertise. This specialized training has enabled him to provide specialized care to patients requiring these specific treatments. Furthermore, Dr. Baker discussed the benefits of fellowships in podiatry, such as providing opportunities for in-depth training, exposure to advanced techniques, and access to specialized resources. He also mentioned that fellowships offer a pathway for podiatrists to enhance their skills, knowledge, and expertise in a particular area of interest, ultimately leading to better patient care outcomes. Overall, the podcast episode highlighted the growing trend towards more specialized fellowships in podiatry, offering podiatrists the opportunity to subspecialize and excel in specific areas within the field. This trend reflects the evolving nature of podiatric medicine and the importance of continuous learning and specialization to meet the diverse needs of patients. Dr. Jeff Baker also discusses the trend of podiatrists joining supergroups, highlighting the advantages of this practice. One significant benefit is the increased opportunities for insurance contracts. By being part of a larger group, podiatrists can negotiate better terms with insurance companies, allowing them to expand their patient base and increase revenue. Supergroups offer better marketing capabilities. By pooling resources and expertise, podiatrists in a supergroup can implement more effective marketing strategies to attract patients. This can lead to increased visibility in the community, higher patient volume, and ultimately, better financial stability for the practice. Dr. Jensen, Dr. Richey, and Dr. Baker highlight how The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) plays a significant role in supporting students. ACFAS offers various opportunities and support for students, including funding for research projects and involvement in regional activities. Student members of ACFAS have the chance to receive financial support for their research endeavors. The regions within ACFAS provide financial assistance to students whose manuscripts or posters are accepted for presentation at the annual scientific conference.  Additionally, ACFAS encourages student engagement by providing opportunities to participate in regional activities. Students can benefit from networking with professionals in the field, gaining insights into the inner workings of the organization, and expanding their knowledge and skills. The involvement in regional activities allows students to interact with experienced foot and ankle surgeons, fostering mentorship opportunities and professional growth. https://explorepodmed.org/ Dean's Chat Website Dean's Chat Episodes Dean's Chat Blog Why Podiatric Medicine?  Become a Podiatric Physician https://lelandjaffedpm.com https://higherlearninghub.com

Join us for a trip down memory lane in podiatric medicine; from early residency training at Kern/Civic Hospital to opening up hospitals for podiatric privileges in St. Louis, to training residents for 4 decades. Dr. Jacobs is a true icon in our profession! Dr. Jacobs highlights the value of personal interactions in healthcare by sharing stories from his own practice. He recounted instances where simple gestures, such as bringing a patient their favorite breakfast or giving them roses after surgery, made a significant impact on the patient's experience and healing process. These acts of kindness and personalization not only enhanced the patient's satisfaction but also contributed to their overall well-being and recovery. Despite the increasing trend towards corporatization and reliance on AI in healthcare, Dr. Jacobs stressed the irreplaceable role of human connection in patient care. He expressed concerns about the potential loss of personal touch and empathy in modern medicine, where patients may feel like commodities in a system focused on efficiency and automation. Dr. Jacobs emphasized the importance of taking the time to sit down, listen, and engage with patients on a personal level, as these small gestures can have a profound impact on their perception of care and the healing process. Dr. Jacobs is a 1973 Summa Cum Laude graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine. He completed his residency in surgery at Monsignor Clement Kern Hospital for special surgery in Warren, Michigan in 1975. Dr. Jacobs is in private practice in St. Louis, Missouri. His passion for rural medicine is obvious, as his desire is to give back to the local community and the podiatric community. He is involved with the ACFAS and has participated in the Big West Region as Treasurer and is currently the Vice President. Dr. Matthews was also selected to participate in the Chris Mahaffey Leadership Development Program from May 2023 – present. Rural practice in podiatry offers a fulfilling and rewarding career path. Dr. Matthews shared his experience and shed light on the unique opportunities and challenges that come with practicing podiatry in a rural setting. One advantage of rural practice is the ability to see a wide variety of cases. Unlike subspecialists in larger cities, rural podiatrists often have the opportunity to treat a diverse range of foot and ankle conditions. This allows them to develop a broad skill set and become well-rounded practitioners. Dr. Matthews mentioned that he enjoys the ability to see anything that comes through the door, as it keeps his practice interesting and allows him to continuously learn and grow as a podiatrist. However, practicing in a rural community also comes with its challenges. One of the main challenges is limited access to specialists. Dr. Matthews mentioned that in his area, there is a lack of foot and ankle orthopedic surgeons and vascular surgeons. This means that he often has to manage complex cases on his own or refer patients to specialists who may be located far away. The distance and logistics involved in accessing specialized care can be a challenge for both the podiatrist and the patients. Despite these challenges, Dr. Matthews believes that there is a significant opportunity for podiatry to grow in rural communities. Many rural areas lack specialized foot and ankle care, and podiatrists can fill this gap and provide much-needed services. Dr. Matthews emphasized that there is a demand for podiatrists in rural areas, and he believes that the profession can have a bigger foothold in these communities. In terms of recruitment, Dr. Matthews and his colleagues are working on promoting the specialty of podiatry and informing the public about the role of podiatrists. They are also exploring ways to increase exposure to rural podiatry during podiatry school and residency programs. By highlighting the unique opportunities and benefits of rural practice, they hope to attract more students and practitioners to this field. Overall, the field of podiatric medicine offers a range of career paths that allow practitioners to specialize in specific areas and provide specialized care to patients. Whether it's wound care, trauma, hospitalist-based podiatry, or other options, podiatrists have the opportunity to pursue their interests and make a significant impact in the field.
