Changing Anti-Fatness In Medical School -- Anne McGladdery

Medical interactions are often deeply traumatic for fat and plus-size people. Anne McGladdery (they/she) is a medical student, fat, and became a squeaky wheel during medical school in order to shift the anti-fat bias prevalent throughout the curriculum. Anne shares about their stressful first couple of years (spoiler: their hair started falling out!), their weight stigma research project, and how they plan to be a different kind of physician for fat people.Anne McGladdery is a University of British Columbia (UBC) MD candidate 2023 based out of the northern program in Prince George, BC. They came to medicine through a very circuitous route, having a theatre degree and a masters in theatre history from the University of Victoria previously. Having worked as a medical office assistant while completing their graduate degree, Anne saw the many successes and failings of the medical system from a family medicine perspective. As they became more familiar with fat politics, they learned to identify how discrimination against fat people was treated as the norm by many health care professionals. Wanting to provide equitable care to patients with bodies of all sizes became a motivating factor for Anne, and so they returned to school to complete their science upgrading before being accepted to the UBC medical program. It has been difficult and alienating being a fat medical student, but with the support of amazing colleagues, allies, and friends, Anne is hopeful that there will be a new generation of physicians who are able to leave these biases behind. Please connect with Anne through email, and the UBC Weight Inclusive instagram account. In the episode, Anne mentioned Alexandra Shewan, Dr. Wind, and the She's All Fat podcast. This episode's poem is called “bless small things” by Elizabeth Paulette-Coughlin.Please connect with Fat Joy on our website, Instagram, and YouTube (full video episodes here!). Hello Hello! Shana is calling in from Santa Barbara, and still out on tour. During the week Theresa and Shana share various articles and podcasts with each other, this week Shana sent Theresa a new This American Life podcast episode "But That's What Happened", it peeks into the secret conversations that happen in the Mormon religion between bishops and young women and men around sexuality. Check it out and let us know what you think, it might be cathartic for those of you who have experienced this but never felt like you could talk about it! Theresa shared the article "#MeToo Will Not Survive Unless We Recognize Toxic Femininity". This is a topic we also want to explore more, it calls out women in the #metoo movement to own their own toxic behavior: "Until it (the movement) admits that women can be as manipulative and creepy and generally awful as men, the movement will continue to send a message that we're not really whole people. And why would anyone believe someone like that?" Read it and tell us what YOU think!!! Our first guest, Valeria Gheorghiu is an activist attorney who studied environmental and civil rights law and who is now incorporating restorative justice into her work. You can check out her website is HERE . Since college, she's been working to protect workers right, the earth and Indigenous Peoples rights and culture. She was naturally drawn to this work having learned about Starhawk and the destruction of paganism as a young child, and as an immigrant whose family was forced from their land and community in Romania. She's been cleaning the forests of garbage since age 12 on earth day, and works to live sustainably herself in a cooperative way with the earth and others and helps others do the same through her cooperative law work. Valeria came to Restorative Justice as a natural progression from her indigenous peoples advocacy and cooperative living and working. Restorative Justice empowers communities to resolve their own conflicts in a way where everyone is able transform and society benefits, #wisdomkeepers. Our second guest today is Que Sera. DJ, mother, musician, performer, educator and free thinker! She lives in Brooklyn NY with her husband and collaborator Rahlou. Together they have a project called Streetlight Boutique which we feature in this interview. She shares about home schooling her and Ralou's boys, and working as an educator at the Park Avenue Armoury. Originally from Haiti, she had a very community oriented upbringing, she is worldly and exotic. Such a pleasure interviewing her for this, Shana was truly blown away by the abundant life she has and how she is raising her sons, not to mention the night life she is able to have as a performer, she really has it all! ENJOY! Self Care is COMPLICATED!!! A quote that Shana heard recently on the She's All Fat podcast in their self-care section is "people who struggle with self-care are usually really good at taking care of others, so the key is to see yourself as another person in your life".... how cool is that!? Be your own best friend! Today's show was engineered by Manuel Blas of Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org. We heard music from Shana Falana, http://www.shanafalana.com/, Streetlight Boutique, and audio from the film, She's Beautiful When She's Angry, http://www.shesbeautifulwhenshesangry.com ** Please: SUBSCRIBE to our pod and leave a REVIEW wherever you are listening, it helps other users FIND US :) Follow Us: INSTAGRAM * https://www.instagram.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast/ FACEBOOK * https://www.facebook.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast TWITTER * https://twitter.com/wantwhatshehas

Sophia Carter-Kahn and April K. Quioh, the voices behind the She’s All Fat podcast, join us for an open and honest conversation about varying opinions and their experience in building a body positive podcast. Both April and Sophia have backgrounds in writing, and that’s how the two initially met! We chat about why they decided to create a podcast, and how they picked the name, She’s All Fat, plus we get into their favorites topics to cover on their show. Sophia and April also share their own personal journey towards self-love, and how the road to loving their own bodies and self acceptance—it hasn’t always been linear. The girls all laugh over the ways they take a break to digest all of the (at times heartbreaking) media, mainly in the forms of binge-watching new television series. In our conversation we go deep into how words like “fat” and “skinny” are neutral, and how we need to change the way that these topics are approached, especially in today’s social media-driven culture.   We also talk about… Influence from our parents + how that affects us as we grow Comments + backlash How having a podcast has become therapeutic The importance of having a therapist April + Sophia’s life outside of their podcast Where they go to stay educated What’s to come for She’s All Fat   Find more to love at almost30podcast.com!   Resources: Listen: She’s All Fat Podcast Instagram: @_sophiack_  ; @aprilkquioh Twitter: @sophiaCK ; @aprilkquioh   Learn more about April: aprilkquioh.com Learn more about Sophia: sophiack.com Check out: longform.org Listen to these episodes: @ Our Thin Friends ; The Fat Friend     Upcoming Events: Almost 30 Tour | December 4th, Vancouver Almost 30 Tour | December 6th, Vancouver     Sponsors: Nutribullet | Use code ALMOST30 for 25% off at nutribulletbalance.com Mowellens | Use code ALMOST30 for 10% off your first purchase at mowellens.com Four Sigmatic | Use code ALMOST30 for 15% off your order at foursigmatic.com/almost30   Veggie Grill | Make Thanksgiving easier than ever.
