In this episode I'm going to give you a shortcut to making sure you find the best fit, whether you're seeking a new job, a date, or any new opportunity. It doesn't guarantee you'll get the thing you want, but it gives you the best chance, and it will nearly guarantee you don't end up in a situation you don't want. In the last episode I had interviewing guru Anna Papalia on the show and we talked through the message in her new book, Interviewology. If you want to land a new job you love, listen to the last episode and check out her book. The bigger point is that most all new opportunities we can benefit from come from an interview. I'm a lifetime entrepreneur, but every new opportunity comes from being selected from an interview of sorts. Connecting with another person to see if you are both a good fit for an opportunity. That's the point. Finding an authentic fit. That's the show. Hey, got a comment or question about an episode? Want to ask a question about your drive? Email me. In this episode we give focus to our drive, in our work. Our work is a primary, if not the primary focus of our lives, at least from a daily time and energy devotion. The message here is in relation to the interviewing process, but as you'll hear, so much of it relates to our lives overall. In any relationship and opportunity there is an aspect of selling yourself and often a struggle between being yourself and feeling you are performing. I was recently introduced to Anna Papalia who is one of our leading authorities on the new science of interviewing. Now, I've been a lifetime entrepreneur who has never technically interviewed for a traditional job, but as I read Anna's research I was made acutely aware that as an entrepreneur I spend a lot of my time interviewing for opportunities. Selling myself. And to that degree, we all are. Which is why I wanted to bring this conversation to you. Anna's research is now culminated in her new book, “Interviewology” where it categorizes all of us in four interview styles - The Charmer, the Challenger, the Examiner, and the Harmonizer. The three keys we discuss are, 1) understand your own style, 2) understand how to fully embrace your style in interviews and be completely authentic when you're selling yourself, and 3) understand the other styles so you can tap into them when you are being interviewed, or you are interviewing, so you can better connect with the other person and vastly increase your chances of success. And success may mean helping you realize the job or person is a completely bad fit, which is vital to know! The book again is Interviewology and you can go to interviewology.com to find out what your style is. By the end of this conversation however, you'll have clarity on what your style is and how to fully utilize it. In this episode, Dave Thompson interviews Anna Papalia, author of Interviewology, about the art of interviewing. Anna shares her background in talent acquisition and her realization that there was a lack of research-backed tools to teach people how to interview. She developed the concept of interview styles, which include charmers, challengers, examiners, and harmonizers. Anna emphasizes the importance of self-awareness in interviews and how understanding your own interview style can help you adapt to different interviewers. She also discusses the scientific validation of Interviewology and the fear that many people have when it comes to job interviews. The episode concludes with a discussion on seeking feedback and the importance of authenticity in interviews. She also draws parallels between interviewing and dating, highlighting the need for self-awareness in both contexts. The conversation explores the use of scripts in interviews to mitigate bias and ensure structure. Anna emphasizes the importance of addressing failures and weaknesses honestly and using them as opportunities for growth. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the significance of asking thoughtful questions as a job seeker and the universal truth that different interview styles can complement each other. Truths: Self-awareness is crucial in interviews. Understanding your own interview style can help you adapt to different interviewers and improve your performance. There are four interview styles: charmers, challengers, examiners, and harmonizers. Each style has its own strengths and preferences in interviews. Interviewing is an artificial event where the power dynamics can change quickly. Both job seekers and hiring managers can benefit from understanding their own interview style. AI and applicant tracking systems have limitations in evaluating candidates. Authenticity and self-knowledge are more important than using scripted answers or relying on technology. Authenticity is crucial in job interviews, and being yourself can lead to success. Interviewing and dating share similarities, such as the need for self-awareness and the ability to answer questions about oneself. Using scripts in interviews can help mitigate bias and ensure a structured process. Addressing failures and weaknesses honestly and discussing what you have learned from them is important in interviews. As a job seeker, asking thoughtful questions demonstrates curiosity and can help you assess the fit of the job and company. Different interview styles can complement each other, and we can benefit from being open-minded and learning from others.

Having spent years as a corporate recruiter, organizational consultant, and coach to students and professions, she's conducted thousands of real and mock interviews and noticed that people tend to fall into one of four categories: charmer, examiner, challenger, or harmonizer. She outlines the strengths and weaknesses of each and explains how this framework can help us get better from both sides of the desks. Papalia wrote the book "Interviewology: The New Science of Interviewing."
