In this week's edition of "We Should Have Known Better," we cover Liam Neeson's latest Old Man Neeson actioner, THE ICE ROAD (3:05), this year's early winner of the "It Wants to be 'The Wages of Fear' or even 'Sorcerer' but it's Really Just a Turd" award. Perhaps that's harsh, but as scary as Canadian ice roads are in April, even scarier is the prospect of a movie filled with half-baked ideas, crummy special effects, and a villain who has more lives than the Energizer bunny. It's just wretched. But man, was it fun to talk about! Next is FALSE POSITIVE (19:12), which star Ilana Glazer wrote with its director, John Lee. Who doesn't love pregnancy horror? In this case, two of us. As Dave puts it, this is a movie that offsets each good idea it has with a bad one. But one of us liked it! (And though he didn't mention it in the episode, Dave likes Pierce Brosnan's beard.) Lastly, it's NO SUDDEN MOVE (40:20), the new Steven Soderbergh thriller starring lots of his favorite people, including Don Cheadle and Benicio Del Toro. It has a little bit of everything, and screenwriter Ed Solomon is a loooong way from Bill & Ted. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?

Episode 97 is a bit of a rollercoaster episode with Dave Almy. A very honest and real conversation, that has a lot of laughs and an almost equal number of moments that cause to take great pause. This episode was recorded almost exactly 2 years ago. I continued to hold this for the right time and that time is now! It's finally ready to be out here for your consumption.I'm gonna give a quick shout-out to previous guest of the podcast: Bruce Mendelsohn, for connecting Dave and me for this conversation. Thanks Bruce!Dave, who lives in NorCal now, is from Boston and very early in the episode, he makes sure to check in on the usage of bad language on the podcast. I gave him the green flag (the green flag for the red "E" on this one) and I warned y'all early in the episode... so: if you read this first, be ready.Dave comes from an interesting family dynamic, himself. His parents divorced when he was very young and his Dad married his stepmom in the years following. It's really good to hear about how great his stepmom was and what a wonderful woman and parent she has been in his life. And, yes, I understand that I say that as someone who didn't have step-parents and may be kind of influenced by the cliché of the evil step mom or dad. With all of that said, Dave's description of his biological Mom is really something else. He talks about how massively entrepreneurial she is and of her constant reinvention of herself in the likely nevernding plight for constant mental stimulation. He admitted that this is definitely a trait that he got from his Mom.The story of cancer taking Dave's Dad was extremely similar to the story of my own Father. It really hit home for me and this particular part of maybe his final visit with his Dad in the hospital, where he recalls his Dad saying to him in a moment of clarity:"What was I doing chasing the almighty dollar when I should have been home with my family?"Those are the last words that Dave's Father spoke to him before he died. Read them again. As Dave said a bit after quoting that to me: "...going away from that and reflecting on it as my kids were born; that's been the phrase that has... it's just burrowed into me..."I really hope you all enjoy this episode, that you get a lot out of it, that you are inspired by it. I got all of that and more, myself. You can listen to this conversation by finding the Daddy Unscripted podcast, wherever you listen to podcasts (Apple, Spotify, Stitcher, Tune In Radio, etc).As I say in each episode: for anyone who may need help during any difficult times: the National Suicide Prevention hotline: (800) 273-8255. Episode 27 of the Legal Tech StartUp Focus Podcast -- Interview with Tom Dunlop and Dave Smith of Summize Charlie Uniman, host of the Legal Tech StartUp Focus Podcast (www.legaltechstartupfocus.com/podcast), welcomes to this episode two co-founders of UK-based legal tech startup Summize (www.summize.com): Tom Dunlop, Chief Executive Officer, and Dave Smith, Chief Development Officer. Among just one of its several contract-related solutions, and as described on its website: "Summize is a lightweight assistant to the contract lifecycle. Upload any contract and the platform creates an instant, easy-to-read summary." The podcast kicks off with Tom and Dave talking about the career paths that brought them together to co-found Summize. Speaking of his own career path, Tom says that he started out as a private law firm lawyer in the UK and from there moved into in-house GC roles at tech company scale-ups. As Tom puts it, his role as a tech company GC enabled him to see business innovation first hand, but that role also exposed him to the frustrations that lawyers face in dealing with the inefficiencies in their day-to-day work. Those frustrations resulted in Tom's exploring software solutions that could mitigate those inefficiencies, his meeting Dave and their co-founding Summize. As Dave explains, he brought his 30 years of software development experience to bear in co-founding Summize. One of the questions that Dave entertains from Charlie is whether Dave believes that developing software for lawyers differs from developing software for other types of business users. Tom and Dave next describe just what Summize's software offerings do. Its original product offering was the "instant" creation of contract summaries. As that offering operates today, law firms and in-house departments can augment their Microsoft Office 365 experience with a plug-in that Summize built to generate these summaries directly in Microsoft Word and can also obtain those summaries by querying their contracts through plug-ins for Slack and Microsoft Teams as well. Summize assists private practice and in-house lawyers in, among other things, creating contracts, assessing the conformity of contracts with a firm's or enterprise's contract playbooks and contract precedent banks, and understanding contract definitions and other clauses. According to Tom and Dave, all of Summize's contract analytics offerings emphasize ease of use, short time-to-value and a modular approach that enables Summize's software to "play well" with other vendors' contracts software. In fact, one of Summize's chief aims is to have its post-signing offerings enhance a customer's use of that customers's other, existing, contract management tools. The final segment of the podcast has Tom and Dave offering "words of wisdom" when it comes to legal tech startup management. Here Tom describes Summize's successful efforts at content marketing and its use-case based method for customer onboarding. Charlie, Tom and Dave conclude the podcast with a discussion of what aspect of startup management Tom and Dave are most proud of to date (hint: that aspect involves the growth and maintenance of a company culture that is both customer-centric and committed to continuous product improvement).

If you believed in the potential of Bitcoin SV, what would you do? You might set up a venture capital and hedge fund to invest in BSV startups because you thought they had such great prospects. And if that wasn’t enough, you might try to get into transaction processing with your own Bitcoin node infrastructure. That’s what exactly what Dave Mullen-Muhr, of Unbounded Capital and Unbounded Enterprise, is doing. On this week’s episode of Coingeek Conversations, Charles Miller talks to Dave about the Unbounded brand and the book he co-authored with his business partner, Jackson Laskey, How Bitcoin SV Will Win.What are Unbounded Capital and Unbounded Enterprise? Unlike Unbounded Capital a finance company that invests in the Bitcoin SV ecosystem, Unbounded Enterprise now takes the business a step further. “There is just so much opportunity, that’s what really it all comes down to. We were watching everything being built and we figured we can do more than just invest in companies,” Dave says. With Unbounded Enterprise they will help businesses move from idea to execution by making it easy to integrate with Bitcoin SV. Unbounded Capital and Unbounded Enterprise share the same goal. That is, to drive the adoption of Bitcoin SV and help push the blockchain space forward. One way of doing that is by making it easy for enterprises to implement the technology into their business. As Dave explains, Bitcoin is unbounded but there are still some limits in place – particularly in implementing the various technologies that are available but not always easy to use: “we want to remove those limits.”How Bitcoin SV Will WinThe ebook that Dave co-authored with his business partner Jackson Laskey, How Bitcoin SV Will Win: Why the Cryptocurrency Consensus is Wrong, is described on Amazon as “a comprehensive explanation of where the cryptocurrency industry currently is, why it is there, and why it is so at odds with Unbounded Capital’s vision of Bitcoin.” The book started as a collection of blog posts by both authors while on a year’s journey learning about Bitcoin. Dave says the book is a way of reframing people’s ideas about Bitcoin to enable its readers to look towards what he calls a “hyper efficient network that offers a fundamentally new toolset for business.”As Dave says, there are parallels with the emergence of the Internet: “When you give people tools, they’re going to build and they’re going to find a way to generate value from those tools. We’ve had this amazing toolset since when I was born, which is the Internet. And [Bitcoin SV] is a huge upgrade to that toolset, that now we can transact in tiny payments. We can have really, really highly interoperable data paradigms. And we can have data ownership. I think entrepreneurs are going to use these tools and the new wave of innovation will be similar to what we saw in the nineties and early two thousands.”

In this week's episode of Into the Pray, we speak with Dave Brennan of Brephos, a Christian (not Catholic) organisation heralding the plight of unborn babies. (Correction to the podcast: “Brephos” is the Greek word for “baby” not “breath”).“They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons; they poured out innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was polluted with blood. ..Then the anger of the LORD was kindled against his people, and he abhorred his heritage.” (Psalm 106: 37-38, 40).Dave helps us with the conviction that we all need be having conversations about this in an ongoing, increasing way and, as such, a new weekly episode of this podcast will now be dedicated to this worthy conversation. (More info to follow).Suffice to say, we need much more Christian action and much less Christian apathy/ignorance.How many people were killed during WW1 and WW2, combined? Do you know? Do you know how many people were killed in the last century through the abhorrence of abortion? As Dave begins to help us all to understand, this issue of babies being killed on an industrial scale is nothing short of "normalised" genocide and yet tantamount to many, many in our sick society today with merely personal hygiene choices - after all, "It's MY body!", right? We will all very soon stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ with this incomparable injustice firmly in His view - what will He say to us; what will we say to Him? It's a pretty familiar story with craft breweries, there are only so many resources available and far too many jobs to be done. Often, getting the beer out the door is a lot more important than building a brand, so what inevitably happens is that the brewery designs a logo. As Dave talks about in this interview, a logo and a brand, while closely related and must work together cohesively, are different things.A logo is an easily recognizable graphic symbol that identifies a company, a commercial product, or any public or private entity. A brand is the idea or image people have in mind when thinking about specific products, services and activities of a company, both in a practical and emotional way.See the difference? In this episode, Dave talks about the process he went through to update his branding. It involved being told harsh truths, he had to make big decisions, he had to let gho a bit, and he listened to the people around him to come up with a new era for Akasha Brewing Company. As always with Dave, this is an open and honest discussion with insights from one of the best in the biz.https://akashabrewing.com.au/

Imagine you're buying a new home. You want a safe space for your family and friends with all the amenities. You’d want that home to be a welcoming representation for all you stand for when others visit. Cali BBQ Media’s web guru Kyle Pflueger builds “homes” for businesses. They just happen to be online. Dubbed a “Navy SEAL for websites" by Digital Hospitality host Shawn Walchef, Kyle Pflueger of Mithril Media has been sent on missions to build online homes for businesses in San Diego and elsewhere. Over the course of his career, Kyle has been busy creating luxury homes with rooms for content, commerce, and community. A booming business? For sure. However, it was through fandom and friendship that Kyle joined the Cali BBQ Media Team when he met Shawn Walchef through our pals at the Dave & Jeff Podcast. “As Dave and Jeff embarked in the podcast realm, they realized that they needed a more serious website,” says Kyle Pflueger about being a longtime listener of the Dave & Jeff Show on this episode of Digital Hospitality. “Something that would help people take them seriously, something that would help their podcast grow and give them a platform where they could publish their content and put their voices out there." Dave and Jeff needed a home builder. As it turned out, the man with the plan was a fan. “I put myself out there and sent an email to both of them,” Kyle reflects on reaching out to the radio stars. “And I sent a DM on Twitter. After a couple of messages, I finally heard back.” Talking to people you’ve never met can be daunting. Talking to ones you admire and are looking to do business with adds an extra layer of pressure that can be too much for most. Not Kyle. “I explained to Dave and Jeff how much I appreciated the entertainment that they provide,” Kyle says. “And how much I appreciate their voice and them as human beings and the good that they do. We reached an agreement and things sort of took off from there.” Suddenly, Dave and Jeff had the man to build their new home on the world wide web. “I took care of building their website which is still going strong to this day,” Kyle says proudly. “They've become family that I cherish dearly. They've been instrumental in my own growth as a business owner, but more importantly than that they’re people that I can call anytime if I need something or I've got something worth celebrating. They’re people I want to celebrate with, the people that I want to rely on me.” It all started over a DM, but it didn’t happen overnight. “I really got started with websites through a full-time job 10 to 12 years ago,” Kyle looks back. “That was my first taste of the digital world.” A side hustle of sorts, Kyle used his free time to invest in what would ultimately become a primary source of income. “I started exploring my own design capabilities,” Kyle reflects on the Digital Hospitality podcast. “That's where I really started to hone the craft.” At the beginning, money was never the pursuit. Creating websites was purely about passion. “The first website I built was a music review blog,” Kyle says. “I built it for myself and a couple of buddies that I worked with at the time. We all had similar taste in music, and we love talking about it. We didn't really care if anyone wanted to listen or not. We just wanted to share our thoughts.” Soon enough, word got out about Kyle’s digital skill-sets. “That sort of trickled its way into, ‘Oh hey, can you build a website for my friend?’” From there, Kyle would build websites for his friends and friends of friends. The sites ranged from personal blogs to e-commerce portals. Still, it was that innate love for creating that sparked it all. “I can't speak highly enough about how important the passion is in all of this,” Kyle emphasizes. “Be passionate about what you're creating.” With his once side hustle now his full-time gig,

My guest this week in Dr. David Richo, who was on the podcast before back in 2018 when we talked about mindfulness in relationships. This time we were focusing on his new book, Triggers: How to Stop Reacting and Start Healing (affiliate link). It’s a great guide for how to use your emotional reactions when you’re triggered as the starting point for identifying and resolving the underlying issues. One of the things I love most about Dave’s approach is how he doesn’t pretend there’s some trick or technique that’s going to take away your difficult emotions or make life a breeze. He’s honest about the challenges all of us will face, and how accepting those challenges is the path toward becoming a full-fledged adult. I especially want to draw your attention in this episode to Dave’s encouragement to make a commitment to working on yourself when you’re triggered, rather than blaming others or assuming the problem is with them. I’m thinking about this a lot more in my own closest relationships since Dave and I spoke, especially in my marriage, and trying to remember to be curious about my reaction instead of focusing on my feeling of hurt or injustice. As Dave and I discuss, there’s true freedom to be found in that approach, and it lets us let go of so much unnecessary tension in our relationships.

Topics we covered included: What it means to be triggered How our triggers can turn into tools for healing past issues Using triggers as a trailhead to begin the “hike” into your unfinished business A simple 2-step approach to starting to work constructively with our triggers Blame as a reliable indicator of something in our own psyche that we’re not looking at “Seeing your own stuff” rather than seeing what is wrong in the other person Ways that authority figures may trigger us Why it’s useless to try to talk yourself out of your triggers with the reasoning mind The operation of triggers in the limbic system Our ability to trigger ourselves internally How to respond to our inner critic Dealing with triggers in the context of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic Letting go of the belief that we have ultimate control over our lives Escaping the prison of fear by letting go of control (or false control) How to exercise compassion for our loved ones’ “irrational” triggers After our discussion, Dave shared this new affirmation with me: I will do all I can to deal with this present predicament. When the next thing happens I will do all I can to deal with that. I will continue in this style, asking continually for the courage to change what can be changed. When all avenues of creating change have closed, I will say yes to what is by the power of grace. This will grant me the serenity to accept what I cannot change. Then a new door, unnoticed before, will open. It will be the gift of wisdom, my true spiritual goal. —Dr. David Richo David Richo, PhD, MFT, is a psychotherapist, teacher, workshop leader, and writer who works in Santa Barbara and San Francisco, CA. As we continue the conversation about finishing strong for the year, we tap into a resource who clearly maps out a way we all can live happier and with more intention. Our friend Dave Hollis (husband to our other friend, Rachel!) had his dream job as president of distribution for The Walt Disney Company, where he worked 17 years. At the top of his game, Dave left Disney and moved with his family to Austin to form The Hollis Company, so he and Rachel could continue helping people live better lives. This move also began Dave’s personal journey to find his true purpose. Dave pulls no punches as he lays down his thoughts on finishing strong, based on hard lessons he’s learned as he’s left comfort zones, chosen to be vulnerable and tossed aside worrying what others think of him. As you might have guessed, this took Dave a bit of deliberation, forced reflection and a lot of sweat, but he assures us the results are worth it. Dave gives us paths toward gratitude and steps toward making meaningful changes in our lives that are as simple as recognizing what brings us joy and what doesn’t, and saying “yes” to the joy-giving things more often. As Dave says, “If you go on the hunt for gratitude every day, you will find evidence of it, and you will have a life that is full and different because of it.”

Dave and his wife have been working together for a long time. She took on the bookkeeping side of things, while Dave had been running his pharmacy. After selling off the business and traveling for a while, they got into real estate investing and eventually started looking at bookkeeping itself as a business. [4:30] Dave knew what his niche was going to be even before signing up for Bookkeeper Business Launch. As real estate investors themselves, they understand their needs and pain points, and currently work with 22 real estate investing clients. [6:15] There was no secret to Dave’s success. They found their first client on LinkedIn and after working with them for a few months, that client referred another one. Since then, they have referred at least seven other clients as well. [7:20] Dave eventually migrated away from LinkedIn to Facebook and is a member of a number of real estate investing groups where they post semi-regularly. Dave also managed to get onto his real estate mentor’s podcast and that has resulted in a number of other investors reaching out to them. [9:40] Dave doesn’t pay for any marketing or advertising. They simply make themselves available on Facebook groups and respond to inbound inquiries. Dave has a one page website that is focused on one thing, to get someone to book a call. [13:15] In terms of work hours between Dave and his wife, they probably work an average of 50 hours a week. Their goal is to maximize their income over the next 8 or 10 years, and they want to keep most of the business in-house. [15:50] It’s important to manage your clients’ expectations. Rarely is anything in the business truly urgent, so it’s not necessary to be taking phone calls at 9 pm. [17:10] As Dave and his wife started figuring things out and writing their processes down, they realized that they did things differently depending on the client. They have started documenting everything, and are in the process of turning processes into concrete procedures. [19:20] Processes allow them to get the most amount of work done in the least amount of time. It also allows their service to be uniform across their clients. Another big tip is realizing that niching down allows you to become much more efficient. [23:30] The struggle is mainly taking time out of the day to actually create the document itself while doing the tasks. At the same time, how they do things is still evolving and you can’t document a procedure until you’ve figured out what the procedure is. Dave has started recording some smaller tasks to begin the process. [26:30] Start with the low hanging fruit, and document the simplest and easiest processes that can be outsourced to a virtual assistant. Each task may only take you a couple of minutes to do, but they add up to hours over the course of the month. [28:45] Dave has a checklist for his onboarding that he follows every single time. Since Dave only onboards a couple of clients a month, he still uses the checklist even though that’s one of his main focuses in the business. [30:20] Mundane and repetitive tasks are the first ones you should hand over to a virtual assistant. Just by documenting your procedures and systematizing your business, you will reduce the amount of time you need to complete tasks by 20%. [31:30] Document your processes as they are, not as they should be. Once you’ve done that, then you can start to improve them. It’s important to have a separate space to work from when you are working on your business. [34:10] Once a client gets into maintenance mode, the amount of time it takes each month to service them gets really low. The majority of the time spent in the business is on cleaning up new client’s books and getting things in line. Getting the documentation from a new client is one of the best examples of a task that can be turned into a process and outsourced. Break down each major activity into smaller, more discrete tasks. [39:50] Don’t let perfection be the enemy of getting started and getting things done. Document collection is the area of Dave’s business that he’s going to focus on first. [41:10] Sometimes it only takes a single nugget of wisdom from something to change everything about your business. Always take notes and write down action items when learning new things, and then actually execute on them as soon as you have the chance. [43:30] The business model of bookkeeping is spectacular. Dave’s first rule of business is to get paid before you do any work, and once that’s done, overdeliver on the results.   Mentioned in this episode: REI Bookkeepers

Defying all odds, after battling cancer in his pitching arm, Dave came back to pitch once again in the Major Leagues. People were on their feet cheering and anticipating the game while he stretched and warmed up. He became an inspiration not only to cancer fighters, but to all who needed hope that day. As Dave took the mound, no one could deny the miracle that was taking place. After being told by his doctors, "Short of a miracle, you'll never pitch again," Dave pitched a 4-3 win for the San Francisco Giants. Sadly, Dave's comeback was short-lived. Five days later, in Montreal, Dave threw " the pitch that could be heard round the world." Dave's arm had split in two. As he tumbled to the ground, his mind filled with doubt and fear. Little did he know that the dream he had since he was a little boy, was simply a platform for his purpose to share hope with the suffering around the world. Dave's triumphant defeat of the cancer and his return to the game of baseball is chronicled in his award winning book, Comeback, which has sold more than 650,000 copies. After Dave's comeback and fall from the mound, with the weakened bone, the cancer returned yet again. The arm was not going to get better at this point so Dave decided to retire from his dream, the game of baseball, in November of 1989. Slowly the treatment and the cancer ate away Dave's arm and simultaneously his career. Radiation treatment after radiation treatment resulted in a staph infection that placed a hole in the middle of his arm exposing bone. Finally, the arm along with Dave's shoulder blade and left side of his collar bone had to be amputated for fear the cancer would spread and take Dave's life. Because of the overwhelming response to their story and their desire to walk along side others who suffer, Dave and Jan founded Dave Dravecky's Outreach of Hope, a nonprofit organization in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Draveckys realized through their own experiences that one cannot battle cancer alone, so they have created this ministry to bring hope for those who hurt. On this episode of the podcast, we hear Dave's incredible story of a major league career cut short, hearing the word "cancer" for the first time, trusting God, doubting God, and how his faith ultimately saw him through his recovery.
