1985 haben Mark Knopfler und seine Dire Straits das Album "Brothers In Arms" rausgebracht. Bis heute gilt das Album als eines der erfolgreichsten der Rockgeschichte. Mit Songs wie "Money For Nothing", "Walk Of Life", "Your Latest Trick" und natürlich dem Titelsong "Brothers In Arms" sind auf dem Album auch einige der größten Hits der Dire Straits vertreten. Für die Band rund um Gitarrenlegende Mark Knopfler war es schon das fünfte Studioalbum der Dire Straits. Und mit mehr als 30 Millionen verkauften Einheiten und Diamantauszeichnungen in Deutschland, Großbritannien und den USA zählt "Brothers in Arms" auch zu den kommerziell erfolgreichsten Rockalben der Geschichte. "Brothers In Arms" von den Dire Straits ist aber nicht nur das erfolgreichste Album von Mark Knopfler und Co., für SWR1 Musikredakteur Niels Berkefeld ist es auch das perfekteste Album der Band, mit Ausnahme eines Songs, erklärt er im Podcast. Aber "Brothers In Arms" ist nicht nur vom Songwriting ein absoluter Meilenstein, sondern auch von der Seite der technischen Produktion her. Damals war das Medium CD und digitale Musikproduktion noch sehr neu und die Dire Straits haben auf dieser Platte alle neuen Möglichkeiten der CD-Produktion ausgenutzt und das hatte kaum eine Gruppe und kaum eine Künstlerin oder ein Künstler vorher so gemacht. Einer der bekanntesten Hits des Albums ist natürlich "Money For Nothing" auf dem auch The-Police-Sänger Sting zu hören ist – ein absoluter Zufall. Sting war nämlich eigentlich nur in Montserrat gewesen, um die Dire Straits im Studio zu besuchen und mit ihnen zu Abendessen zu gehen. Die Inspiration zum Song "Money For Nothing" entstand in einem Elektrogeschäft als Mark Knopfler einige Arbeiter vor einer Fernsehwand beobachtet, wie sie sich darüber ärgern, dass sie so schwer schuften müssen und die Rockstars, die auf dem Musiksender MTV zu sehen sind, reich werden und die hübschen Mädchen bekommen – frei übersetzt: Die bekommen Kohle fürs Nichtstun! In den 80er-Jahren kam man nicht an diesem Album vorbei. In altbewährter Tradition gibt es in der letzten Folge vor Weihnachten eine Spezialausgabe: Drei Personen aus der Redaktion, dürfen einen ganz persönlichen Meilenstein vorstellen. In diesem Jahr wird es im Meilensteine XMAS-Special definitiv rockig und schrill und als Garnierung gibt's noch eine dicke Portion Synthies oben drauf. Den Start in dieses Special macht Musikredakteur Stephan Fahrig mit dem Soloalbum des Van-Halen-Sängers David Lee Roth. Für David Lee Roth ist "Eat 'Em And Smile" 1986 sein erstes Soloalbum nach der Trennung von der Band Van Halen. Und für Musikredakteur Stephan Fahrig stimmt auf diesem Album ganz viel. David Lee Roth ist hier stimmlich in seiner Bestform, erklärt Stephan. Außerdem hat er sich ganz wunderbare Musiker für sein Soloalbum dazugeholt. Gitarrenikone Steve Vai spielt mit und auch Basslegende Billy Sheehan. Gemeinsam haben die eine wundervolle Rockplatte gemacht, die die Rockmusik auf ein neues Level gehoben hat. Und Sänger und Paradiesvogel David Lee Roth ist so schrill und bunt, auch in den Videos, das alles zusammen einfach nur ganz viel Spaß macht. Dave Jörg, unser inoffizieller 80er-Experte, hat für dieses Weihnachtsspecial eine seiner absoluten Lieblingsplatten mitgebracht. Die ist natürlich aus den 80ern und kommt von der deutschen Band Camouflage. Auch nach 40 Jahren Bandgeschichte ist die Gruppe immer noch sehr aktiv. In diesem Jahr waren sie auf großer Jubiläumstour – das hat Dave Jörg sich natürlich nicht nehmen lassen und sie sich gleich zweimal live angeschaut, in Frankfurt und in Berlin. Mit ihrem Song "The Great Commandment" vom Album "Voices & Images" haben Camouflage damals auch international einen Hit gelandet. Eine echte Weihnachtsüberraschung hat Moderatorin Katharina Heinius in dieser Folge geschafft, als sie Camouflage-Fan und Musikredakteur Dave Jörg während der Podcast-Aufzeichnung mit einem plötzlichen Anruf von Heiko Maile von Camouflage überrascht hat. Gemeinsam sprechen Katharina Heinius, Dave Jörg und Heiko Maile über die Anfänge von Camouflage, natürlich über das Album "Voices & Images", dessen Entstehung und auch über die Verbindung und die Gemeinsamkeiten zu den Weltstars von Depeche Mode. Das letzte Album im Weihnachtsspecial ist nicht aus den 80ern, sondern (erst) gut zehn Jahre alt. Die musikalische Reise durch die USA heißt "Sonic Highways" und kommt von den Foo Fighters. Für Musikredakteur Johannes Heuft legt dieses Album einfach einen Schalter um und katapultiert ihn in seine Teenager-Zeit zurück, genauer gesagt in das Jahr 2015. Und damit auch in das Jahr, in dem Johannes zum ersten Mal auf einem Festival war. Der Openersong des Albums "Something From Nothing" steht dabei sinnbildlich für das ganze Album erklärt, Johannes im Meilensteine Podcast: "Dieser Song hat eine krasse Entwicklung. Der klingt vorne ganz anders als hinten und da sind viele, viele Songs auf diesem Album. Das macht diese Platte auch einfach so spannend." Das Konzept zum Album "Sonic Highways" ist eine musikalische Reise durch die USA. Für das Album ist die Band für jeden einzelnen der acht Songs in eine andere Stadt gefahren und in ein anderes Tonstudio gegangen. Natürlich nicht in irgendwelche Städte, sondern in die größten Musikstädte des Landes: Chicago, Nashville, Seattle, New York, New Orleans, Austin, Los Angeles und Washington D.C.. "Bad Girls" war 1979 das siebte Studioalbum von Donna Summer und wurde das erfolgreichste Album der amerikanischen Sängerin. "Bad Girls" war das erste Album von Donna Summer, das es in Amerika bis auf Platz 1 der Billboard Charts schaffte und sich fast ein Jahr in den Albumcharts halten konnte. Auch bei uns in Deutschland war "Bad Girls" ein voller Erfolg: Bis auf Platz 7 schaffte es ihr Album bei uns und konnte sich dort knapp ein halbes Jahr halten. Und obendrauf gab es für den Song "Hot Stuff" auch noch einen Grammy. Donna Summer war mit ihren Songs übrigens die erste weibliche Künstlerin, die es geschafft hat, zwei Singles gleichzeitig in den Top 10 der Billboard Hot 100 zu platzieren. Im Juli 1979 fiel ihr Song "Hot Stuff" von Platz eins auf Nummer zwei, dafür stieg die Nachfolgesingle "Bad Girls" auf Platz drei hoch. Der Song "Hot Stuff" vom Album war nicht nur die erste Single des Albums, die ausgekoppelt wurde, sondern ist auch der erfolgreichste Song vom Album geworden. Aber die Platte hat deutlich mehr zu bieten als nur diesen einen "Überhit". Das ganze Album "Bad Girls" wurde von vielen Musikkritikern weltweit hoch gelobt. Da reihen sich auch die SWR1 Musikredakteure gerne ein und outen sich als echte Donna-Fans: "Es ist eine Platte für die Ewigkeit. Es ist das beste Diskoalbum seiner Zeit", sagt zum Beispiel SWR1 Musikredakteur Dave Jörg. Das Besondere an Donna Summer war nicht nur, dass sie eine tolle Stimme hatte, sondern dass sie als Schauspielerin auch die Fähigkeit hatte, für ihre Songs in unterschiedliche und für den Song passende Rollen zu schlüpfen, erklärt SWR1 Musikredakteurin Nina Waßmundt im Podcast. Donna Summer war nicht nur eine unglaublich gute Sängerin mit einer gewaltigen Stimmkraft, sondern auch eine extrem gute Songwriterin und Texterin, die den Produzenten im Studio "ebenbürtig" war, wie Dave Jörg im Podcast betont. Was für eine tolle Texterin sie war, das beweist sie auch im Song "Bad Girls", der zwar gut gelaunt klingt mit einem tollen Diskobeat, aber im Text wird sie da durchaus sehr kritisch. Nach einem Vorfall, bei dem eine Kollegin von der Polizei schikaniert und fälschlicherweise für eine Prostituierte gehalten wurde, macht Donna Summer ihrer Wut über das rassistische Vorgehen der Polizei in diesem Song Luft. "Sie hat sich sehr über die Doppelmoral der Leute aufgeregt in dem Song. [...] Auf der einen Seite zerreißen sie sich so das Maul über die "bösen Mädchen" und bemitleiden sie auch ein bisschen, so von oben herab und auf der anderen Seite wollen sie auch was von ihnen und das hält sie ihnen [...] auch vor", erzählt SWR1 Musikredakteurin Nina Waßmundt. Neben der Musik hat Donna Summer, wie zum Beispiel auch Madonna, stark für ihre Selbstbestimmung im männerdominierten Musikbusiness gekämpft und damit auch den Weg geebnet für später Künstlerinnen und ist ein echtes Vorbild geworden. Neben Donna Summer waren auch die beiden Pioniere der elektronischen Musik an dem Album beteiligt: Giorgio Moroder und Harold Faltermeyer. Ein Hauptgewinn für ein Album, das natürlich sehr stark durch elektronische Elemente wie Synthesizerrhythmen und -melodien lebt. Der musikalische Weg von Donna Summer beginnt, ähnlich wie auch der von Whitney Houston, im Kindesalter im Kirchenchor. Und schon dort hatte Donna Summer einen "Erweckungsmoment", wie SWR1-Musikredakteurin Nina Waßmundt es im Podcast beschreibt, denn die junge Donna konnte selbst kaum glauben, was für eine gewaltige Stimme da aus ihrem Körper rauskam. Dieser Moment war für Donna Summer höchst emotional. Neben der Gospelmusik aus der Kirche hat Donna Summer aber auch schon früh angefangen, zum Beispiel Musik von Rocksängerin Janis Joplin zu hören und das hört man auch auf ihrem Album "Bad Girls". Einer ihrer ersten professionellen Schritte in der Musik hat in Deutschland stattgefunden, genauer gesagt in München. Dort hat sie als 19-jährige Sängerin im Musical "Hair" gesungen, passenderweise natürlich die Rolle der Donna. Von einem wirklich internationalen Erfolg konnte man bei der deutschen Version von Hair natürlich noch nicht sprechen. Die SWR1-Musikredaktion legt euch heute kleine Geschenke unter den Baum – ihre ganz persönlichen Meilensteine. Abseits von Chartplatzierungen und Rekorden gibt es hier versteckte Perlen der Rock- und Popgeschichte zu entdecken. "The Dream of the Blue Turtles" von Sting Der Anfang in dieser Folge ist natürlich Chefsache. SWR1-Musikchef Bernd Rosinus hat eine seiner Lieblingsplatten mitgebracht, das erste Solo Album von The Police Frontmann Sting "The Dream of the Blue Turtles" aus dem Jahr 1985. Als die Platte rauskam, hat sie Bernd Rosinus total umgehauen. Auch, weil es was ganz anderes war als das, was The Police vorher gemacht haben. Das Besondere an "The Dream of the Blue Turtles" ist, dass Sting sich für die Platte ganz viele Jazzmusiker zusammengesucht hat, mit denen er dieses Album aufgenommen und produziert hat. Es ist ein Popalbum, dass der hohen Qualität der Jazzmusiker auch immer wieder den Raum gibt, um sich zu präsentieren und ihr Können zu zeigen. "The Age of Plastic" von The Buggles The Buggles, die Band kennen die meisten vermutlich vom Song "Video Killed The Radio Star", dem Song, der beim Start von MTV in Amerika 1981 als erstes Musikvideo über die Bildschirme in die Wohnzimmer flimmerte. Für SWR1-Musikredakteur und Moderator Dave Jörg haben die Buggles aber noch mehr zu bieten als nur diesen einen Megahit, auch wenn der Song auch für ihn schon etwas ganz Besonderes ist. Auf dem Album, was tatsächlich schon Ende der 70er von Trevor Horn produziert wurde, der auch mit Bands wie Yazoo, Depeche Mode oder Erasure zusammengearbeitet hat, hören wir einen fantastischen Mix aus Progrock, New Wave, Neuer Deutscher Welle und auch ein bisschen Pink Floyd, findet Dave Jörg. "Brother To Brother" von Gino Vannelli Das SWR1-Musikredakteur Stephan Fahrig für diese Weihnachtsfolge gerade das Album rausgesucht hat, grenzt an sich schon an ein kleines Weihnachtswunder, denn eigentlich hatte er eine ganz andere Folge im Sinn, aber als sein Smartphone ihn dann mit einem Rückblick an ein persönliches Treffen mit Gino Vannelli vor einem Konzert in Frankfurt erinnerte, änderte er seine Meinung zu "Brother to Brother". Für Stephan Fahrig persönlich ist diese Platte ein Meilenstein, weil für ihn der Sound der Platte und von Gino Vannelli der beispielhafte Sound der 70er ist. "This Life" von Curtis Stigers Ganz ungewohnt für die SWR1 Meilensteine: ein neues Album. "This Life" von Curtis Stigers wurde erst 2022 veröffentlicht. Aber seit der Veröffentlichung im Februar 2022 begleitet dieses Album SWR1-Musikredakteurin Katharina Heinius und sie hat sich im wahrsten Sinne richtig reingehört in die Platte. "Buckingham Nicks" von Lindsey Buckingham und Stevie Nicks Bevor Fleetwood Mac zu der legendären Band wurden, als die wir sie heute kennen, waren es zwei verschiedene Gruppen. Zum einen Fleetwood Mac und zum anderen das Duo aus Gitarrist Lindsey Buckingham und Stevie Nicks. Wie diese beiden Bands zu den legendären Fleetwood Mac wurden, das erklären wir in der Spezialfolge zu den "Sound City Studios". Von den Kritikern wird er als musikalische Genie bezeichnet, aber anstatt dass so ein Talent mit Sorgfalt behandelt wird, fühlt sich Lewis Taylor irgendwann so von der Musikindustrie gebeutelt, dass er die Musik an den sprichwörtlichen Nagel hängt. Als das Hörspiel “War Of The Worlds” von Orson Wells 1938 im Radio ausgestrahlt wird, soll es in den USA zu Massenpaniken gekommen sein, da die Menschen dies nicht für ein Hörspiel, sondern für Radionachrichten gehalten haben sollen. Jeff Waynes Musical Version des Buches hingegen hat keine Panik, sondern nur Begeisterungsstürme zu verantworten. Unter anderem auch bei SWR1 Musikredakteur Dave Jörg, der bis heute von diesem Konzeptalbum fasziniert ist. Und das liegt nicht nur an den wunderbaren musikalischen Gästen wie Chris Thompson von Manfred Mann's Earth Band oder Justin Hayward von Moody Blues. Dieses Album hat sogar mal dafür gesorgt, dass Dave Jörg nach England geflogen ist. SWR1 Musikredakteurin Katharina Heinius hat eine ganz besondere und auch langjährige Beziehung zu Melody Gardot. Begonnen hat die bei einem Studentenjob, hält aber bis heute an. Katharina kennt die bizarre Geschichte dazu, wie Melody Gardot überhaupt erst dazu gekommen ist, Musik zu machen. Denn eigentlich ist die heute Jazzikone gelernte Modedesignerin. Livekonzerte üben nicht nur auf Musiker eine besondere Faszination aus, sondern auch auf Nicht-Musiker. Frank König ist selbst Musiker und wurde damals von der Band The Brandos bei einer Liveshow in Marburg komplett in deren Bann gezogen. Weil sie Live so unglaublich gut performt haben und ihn mit ihrer druckvollen Musik komplett in seinen Bann gezogen haben. Und auch diese Faszination hält bis heute an.
