Shoot us a Text.As we wind down on another week, we're looking at August's EV numbers and the gains by GM. Plus, we talk about the NHTSA's investigation into Full Self Driving, and how Rivian is re-skinning its R1s for spooky season.Show Notes with links:General Motors' latest electric vehicles, combined with Tesla's Cybertruck, significantly contributed to an 18% increase in U.S. EV registrations in August year over year.U.S. EV registrations hit 111,952, accounting for 8.6% of the light-vehicle market, up from 7.5% the previous year.GM's new Equinox EV and Blazer EV made the top 10 EV models, helping Chevrolet place as the #3 EV brand in August, up from #7 in May. Tesla and Ford were #1 and #2.Tesla remains the leader in EV sales but saw its market share drop to 46% as legacy brands like GM, Honda, and Kia close in.Generous leasing offers and incentives are boosting EV sales, although concerns remain about their impact on profitability.“It's basically impossible for Tesla not to lose market share as new EV models stream into the marketplace,” said Ed Kim, AutoPacific's chief analyst. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into 2.4 million Tesla vehicles equipped with Full Self-Driving software after reported crashes in low-visibility conditions. The probe involves Tesla models from 2016-2024, including Model S, X, 3, Y, and the 2023-2024 Cybertruck.Crashes occurred under conditions like sun glare, fog, or airborne dust, with one fatal crash involving a pedestrian.Tesla has a "camera-only" approach to FSD, compared to rivals who use radar and lidar. The investigation adds pressure as Tesla focuses on self-driving technology, robotaxis, and new concepts like the "Cybercab."Tesla has not commented on the investigation.Rivian is bringing some Halloween fun to its R1 vehicles with a set of “Car Costumes,” allowing owners to transform their EVs into iconic movie rides or spooky-themed designs.Owners can choose from "Knight Rider" KITT, the "Back to the Future" Time Machine, or a "Haunted Rivian" costume.Features include themed lighting, sound effects, and interactive display changes.New Halloween-themed modes also include ghostly reskins for drive modes, zombies on pedestrian sensors, and spooky sounds.Rivian's fun-filled update goes live on October 18, offering a whimsical break from the usual serious auto industry.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Jill and Tom are both in studio this week. The conversation started with a brief acknowledgment of the IRS-approved federal mileage reimbursement rate. Is it still the same as the cost of a first-class stamp? The hosts went on to discuss the hyper-affordable Chinese-built BYD Seagull, a $10,000 electric car that could be on a journey to the American market. Jill and Tom also went on to discuss the current new-vehicle redesign cadence, which has grown very long for some vehicles, including the Toyota 4Runner. Jill also shared her take on the Genesis GV80 premium midsize crossover. In the second segment the hosts welcome Ed Kim, President and Chief Analyst at AutoPacific. Shoot us a Text. It's a busy Thursday as we roll towards the holiday weekend. Today, we explore the surprising interest in Chinese EVs among young Americans, Kia's launch of a new compact electric SUV amid cooling EV demand, and Yoshi Mobility's innovative mobile fast charging solution for EVs.Show Notes with links:A recent survey by AutoPacific reveals that younger Americans are increasingly open to purchasing vehicles from Chinese brands, despite privacy worries.35% of respondents aged 18 to 80 would consider a Chinese car.76% of those under 40 are open to buying a Chinese vehicle, compared to only 26% of those over 60.Ed Kim, President of AutoPacific, attributes this trend because it's easier to see what's happening in other parts of the world, saying “Social media has simply just made the world a lot smaller,”Privacy concerns are significant, with over 70% of respondents expressing worry across all age groups.Manufacturing Chinese vehicles in the U.S. could increase purchase willingness among 16% of respondents."[Negative] political connotations associated with China just don't apply to younger people," said KimKia has introduced its first compact electric SUV, the EV3, built on its dedicated EV platform, aiming to attract buyers with competitive pricing despite a cooling global EV market. The EV3 is part of Hyundai Motor Group's plan to introduce over 31 electric models by 2030.The EV3 will be priced between $35,000 and $50,000 and offers two battery options with a long-range model capable of 600 kilometers (373 miles) on a single charge.Kia plans to achieve an annual sales target of 200,000 units worldwide, although they declined to say what year that target is for.Kia aims to sell approximately 1.6 million EV units by 2030."We are making the EV3 very much accessible to our customers with the pricing level that customers are expecting for our vehicle," said Kia President Song Ho Sung.Yoshi Mobility has launched a mobile DC fast charging unit, dubbed "a supercharger on wheels," to address the need for convenient EV charging where infrastructure is lacking. The 240 kW mobile DC fast charger can provide multiple charges in a single trip.It is mounted on GM BrightDrop Zevo 600s, with more vehicles to be added through 2024.Initial customers include “major OEMs, autonomous vehicle companies, and rideshare operators” that don't yet have grid-connected EV chargers. The service can be deployed within 10 days once under contract.Full commercialization is expected by Q1 2025."We recognized a demand among our customers for convenient daily charging," said Dan Hunter, Yoshi Mobility's chief EV officer and cofounder.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email
In this episode of America on the Road, we try to answer a question posed by our two road test cars, the 2024 Volvo S90 Recharge and the Hyundai Ioniq 6. The Volvo is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and the Hyundai is a battery-powered pure EV. Of course, they aren't in the same segment, but looking at them can help answer the question that is on a lot of car buyers' minds right now — should I purchase a plug-in hybrid or a battery-electric? We examine both that question and the pluses and minuses of each car individually in this week's vehicle test segment of the show. Leading the news this week, Consumer Reports says that retailers across the country could be the salvation of the troubled electric-car infrastructure that is severely limiting EV growth. CR posits that the more than a quarter million big box stores across the country should take it upon themselves to install public chargers to remedy one of biggest reasons average consumers are rejecting EVs. The only problem with that is it flies in the face of the findings of an AutoPacific study that describes what EV owners want in recharging stations. It turns out they don't want the big box store experience. What they want is more in line with what they get at a … well, we'll tell you the rest in the news segment. Meanwhile, one highly touted electric vehicle company is looking for salvation of its own. It's grabbing desperately for a lifeline as it tries to stave off bankruptcy. We'll tell you more about that and who the company's possible savior is. Plus,we'll give you some details on why Apple finally has pulled the plug on its once-promising Apple Car development program. Seems like a car isn't a smartwatch after all. Our special guest this week is Tiago Castro, Midwest Regional Vice President of Nissan North America. He's an industry veteran who'll discuss the latest trends, including, of course, what's new at Nissan. We're sure you'll enjoy our conversation with him. We have a lot of show for you this week. All that and more are headed your way on America on the Road. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

Jill and Tom opened the show discussing the best things they ate Thanksgiving Day. After a shoutout to a regular listener who would like the Car Stuff Podcast back on broadcast radio, the hosts turned their attention to Jill's holiday-week experience attempting to travel to and from Chicago and Indianapolis in an electric vehicle. While the car performed well, Jill lamented the lack of charging opportunities along that route, and was frustrated by the long wait to charge at the single level-3 public charger along the way. In the second segment, the hosts welcome Ed Kim, president of AutoPacfic, to the program. Ed weighed in on the recently announced Hyundai/Amazon.com deal, by which customers will soon be able to order their Hyundai vehicles on the Amazon website. Ed also cleared up some misconceptions about the growing EV supplies, and Tesla's recent price cuts. In the third segment Jill is subjected to Tom's “Cyber Monday Auto Gifts” quiz. Jill also shared her impressions of the recently redesigned Toyota Prius Limited AWD.
Jill and Tom opened a busy show by discussing ways that Tom might exploit Jill's would-be celebrity to expand the popularity of the show. The hosts went on to review the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Altitude, which both agreed feels like a pretty strong value. Jill and Tom opened the second segment by welcoming Robby Degraff of AutoPacific to the program. Robby shared the findings of AutoPacific's Future Attribute Demand Study (FADS). Robby walked the hosts down the top-ten list of features car shoppers are expected to want on vehicles purchased in the near future, including a very-cool autonomous-driving safety feature. Robby also shared some insights into the Fisker Ocean, a small electric crossover from EV startup Fisker, which he spent some time driving recently. Delivery of the Fisker Ocean has begun in parts of the U.S., though initial volumes are low. Jill is subjected to Tom's “Car Color or Pop Song” quiz, which wrapped up with a Star Trek bonus question.
