This week we road test two vehicles with strong all-terrain credentials: the 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Hybrid and the 2025 Lexus LX 700h. Co-host Chris Teague put the Toyota through its paces as winter finally turns to spring in Maine. Host Jack Nerad, accompanied by most of his immediate family, tested the luxury Lexus during a extended weekend in Texas. Both vehicles pair a hybrid powertrain with off-road-focused equipment, so there are interesting parallels between the two in addition to their obvious — and not-so-obvious differences. The Tacoma uses the i-FORCE MAX system, combining a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine and electric motor for a total output of 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. The TRD Pro's standard equipment includes part-time four-wheel drive, FOX QS3 adjustable shocks with rear remote reservoirs, and 33-inch Goodyear tires on 18-inch black alloy wheels. Unique to the TRD Pro, IsoDynamic Performance Seats use an air-over-oil shock system designed to reduce body movement on rough terrain. Exterior elements include a TRD grille, cat-back exhaust, and the exclusive Mudbath paint option. Inside, the Teagues got the benefit of the TRD Pro's 14-inch touchscreen with Toyota's latest multimedia system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and JBL audio. The truck had Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, offering adaptive cruise control, lane tracing assist, road sign recognition, and proactive driving assist with support features like trailer backup guidance and a digital rearview mirror. While the Teagues certainly didn't suffer, the Nerad family basked in the ultra-luxury of the 2025 Lexus LX 700h Overtrail. The full-size premium SUV combines hybrid performance, off-road functionality, and upscale features that set it apart from previous LX editions. Powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 with a hybrid system that produces 457 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, it uses a 10-speed automatic transmission and offers full-time 4WD. While it offered a boulevard ride as we discovered on our way to and from Globe Life Field, the 700h Overtrail is loaded for bear on the off-road front. It includes Crawl Control, Active Height Control, and Multi-Terrain Select, plus 33-inch all-terrain tires, locking differentials, and a reinforced platform to support and waterproof the hybrid battery. Inside, the cabin offers massaging, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a wireless phone charger, and a cool box. As we did some house-hunting, we made extensive use of the 12.3-inch touchscreen with Lexus Interface, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cloud-based navigation, and head-up display. Of course, we'll offer even more detail in this episode. Our guest this week is Frank Hanley, Senior Director, Automotive Benchmarking at J.D. Power. In his interview with Host Jack Nerad, he'll be discussing a very important issue going forward — AI in cars, so look for that. We're certain you'll appreciate Frank's insight. In the news this week we'll discuss a J.D. Power analysis of what the proposed tariffs would do to vehicle prices. The conclusions might surprise you, and we'll have all the details. The state of New York is battling the federal government over its congestion tolls, and it has implications for anyone who's planning to travel into a big city. Plus, Chrysler is celebrating its one-hundredth birthday, and we'll have a look back at some of that company's innovations through the years. It's an impressive list. So we have a lot to talk about this week. It's a jam-packed show. Jill and Tom opened the show discussing an “insertion” into the podcast schedule. A 5-minute “bonus episode” was posted between the last full episode (259) and today's show (261). That bonus episode includes Tom's test drive with Robert Colangelo (Green Sense Show) of the 2025 Toyota Camry, which is now hybrid only. Still in the first segment, the hosts discussed the discontinuation of a popular Chevrolet Model, the status of Mexican and Canadian tariffs, and administration's halting of funds for the NEVI (National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure act) program. Jill also reviewed the 2025 Lexus LX 700h crossover. In the second segment, Jill and Tom are joined by TJ Campbell of the Tire Rack. TJ discussed the Tire Rack's testing program, and talked about buying the best off-road—oriented tires for trucks and crossovers. In the last segment Jill is subjected to Tom's “Where is it Built” quiz.
Is Toyota's legendary reliability fading? Recent recalls, like over 100,000 Tundra and Lexus LX engines, and reports of Tacoma transmission issues, are shaking consumer trust. Meanwhile, Toyota's lineup, including the revived Land Cruiser, faces criticism for high prices and limited options, with models like the 4Runner TRD Pro seeing a 24% price hike. As loyal fans question affordability and reliability, is Toyota losing its edge? Stay tuned for insights into these challenges and their impact on the brand's future.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-motor-files-podcast--4960744/support.
The Toyota Land Cruiser's story is almost as long as the brand's. Evolving from a Jeep alternative, the Land Cruiser has since grown into a luxurious off-roading superstar. Technically split between two separate series, the Land Cruiser 200 carried the water for Toyota's Land Cruiser in North America until it reached the end of the road in 2021. While Toyota hasn't brought the replacement Land Cruiser 300 to the United States, yet, the company did bring over its smaller Land Cruiser 250. Formerly dubbed Land Cruiser Prado, this downsized Land Cruiser sits closer to the 4Runner and Tacoma than the oversized Lexus LX. Powering the reborn Land Cruiser is a turbocharged 2.4-liter I4 that works with a hybrid system and an eight-speed transmission to throw 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the '24 Toyota Land Cruiser and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of the latest Land Cruiser highlights some of his favorite features, and tells you what it's like to live with in the real world. Later, Wren takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to these segments, Wren chats with Autoweek's Patrick Carone about the Land Cruiser, the Toyota TNGA-F body-on-frame platform, and more. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes the Land Cruiser special.
On this weeks episode, we talk about the company, dpi off-road, and the rumors of them closing down or not. As well as the Lexus LX 700 and its front and rear lockers. It's been a while since the Lexus LX has been totally revamped. The all-new LX 600 is more powerful, better planted and runs with an all-new architecture with roots shared with the Tundra pickup. And there's a new Ultra Luxury model that offers those in back massaging seats and entertainment choices. It's not without its compromises though. Tom Voelk checks the top-of-the line model in Nori Green and finds the $130K price tag… ultra. Note- This is a 2022 model, 2023 LX 600s are pretty much the same.

Aren't you tired of hearing the Unnamed Automotive Podcast cover mainstream cars that you might actually see on the road? This weeks episode deals with those blahs you're feeling with a pair of niche luxury vehicles. First up Benjamin talks about the 2022 Lexus LX600, which rides on a new platform and features a fresh powertrain. But things aren't aligning properly for Ben, who isn't sure if this is really a Escalade competitor, or a Land Cruiser replacement. Sure it has the 'golden ratio,' but what does that mean when it's almost impossible to fit in the rear seat without an advanced contortionist's degree? Sami chimes in with his own confusing thoughts on the 2022 Volvo S90 Recharge. While he's sure to mention the impressive power and torque from this speedy PHEV, don't miss his thoughts on how it charges...eventually. Our hosts also discuss the conflict of ideas going on at Volvo, and how the company has ended up delivering cars with potential but limited execution. Don't forget to head to the website to send us cheers or jeers, and be sure to subscribe so you don't miss the next episode.

The Toyota Land Cruiser was ‘Yota's top-shelf off-roading machine. Sure, the 4Runner is good, but if you're really trying to go anywhere, especially in style, you'll want a Land Cruiser. Lexus was part of that game, too, with the LX. Though the Land Cruiser might have overshadowed the LX-Series on the street, the Land Cruiser isn't hitting American shores. That's not a problem for the 2022 Lexus LX 600. The new Lexus LX 600 sports many of the same upgrades headed to the Toyota Tundra: a new 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 replaces the outgoing 5.7-liter naturally aspirated V8. While it's dropped cylinders, the turbocharger compensates and helps this 3.5-liter make 409 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. Managing that power is a standard 10-speed automatic transmission, which feeds the standard all-wheel-drive system. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren climbs behind the wheel of the 2022 Lexus LX 600. Wren walks you around the new Lexus SUV and highlights the vehicle's styling and its interesting features. Wren also takes you along for a live drive review, which shows off how the vehicle feels in real-time. On this episode of the Lexus Enthusiast Podcast, Kevin & Michael discuss the media reviews of the LX 600 and how the flagship SUV compares to the new 2023 Toyota Sequoia, rumours of the RX 500h powertrain, and a possible return of the LFA in 2025. This and much more, on the latest podcast from Lexus Enthusiast.
Because there's a new Tundra pickup, it only makes sense that Toyota is rolling out an all-new Sequoia. The 2023 model replaces the second-generation that's as old as its namesake. And it's a hybrid now! The only powertrain is the i-Force Max twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor sandwiched in between it and the 10-speed transmission. With 3-rows it'll carry up to eight adults (though word is the 2nd row does not slide fore and after and headroom in the 3rd row is reduced). The back row of the new Sequoia features a sliding feature so there's a choice of more cargo room or maximum legroom. There are five trim levels including the new top-dog Capstone model plus an off-road oriented TRD Pro. Tom Voelk gives you a preview of the large roomy SUV that shares its architecture with Tundra, Land Cruiser and Lexus LX 600. No pricing or fuel economy ratings have been announced yet.

As carmakers introduce more electric vehicles adoption of the technology grows. But a big question is where and how will we charge all these new electric vehicles? Happily, we just interviewed a guy who has the answers to those questions, special guest Bill Loewenthal is SVP Product at ChargePoint, a giant player in the electric vehicle charging space. In business before the current electric-car era began, ChargePoint has thought through and solved problems many of us never knew existed in its quest to make owning and charging an electric car seamless. The insurance-industry-funded safety organization named 49 vehicle models Top Safety Pick+, its highest award, and it cited an additional 41 vehicles as Top Safety Pick. Between the two awards, IIHS lauded a total of 90 award winners this year versus 64 in 2020, and we'll tell you about many of them. We'll also tell you about a new and interesting re-mix of Carvana's signature car vending machine. It's located in Las Vegas, and that might give you a hint of where they went with it.

The Sonoran Desert can be a forbidding place, but at the wheel of the all-new 2022 Hyundai Tucson crossover SUV, we found it wasn't as dangerous as you might guess. Topping the drive off, host Jack Nerad got a chance to discuss the new SUV at length with Hyundai product planner Trevor Lai, and we'll bring that interview to you in this episode of America on the Road. This week fugitive Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn found himself in the news again. He's living in exile in Lebanon away from an extradition treaty that could haul him back to the slammer, but a former Nissan exec is now on trial in Japan for allegedly setting up the scheme that enabled Ghosn to avoid taxes on nearly $10 million in income. We'll tell you more about that. Has the Toyota Venza transformed itself from a station wagon wannabe to a stylish personal crossover? Well, yes. In the road test segment of the program co-host Chris Teague will reveal his strange love affair with the heretofore disrespected Toyota Venza. Has this odd duckling recently become a swan? Also in the road test segment Jack Nerad will describe his family-oriented road test of the 2021 Lexus LX 570 luxury SUV. One of Nerad's daughters graduated from college just last week, prompting the entire family to gather for the occasion. Was the LX 570 the right car for the entire Nerad crew? We'll let you know. The 2021 Lexus LX 570 was the chosen transportation device for a recent family celebration. And with gas prices spiking an AOTR listener wants to know if now is a great time to buy a muscle car like a Ford Mustang Mach 1 or Dodge Challenger.
