The rumble of vintage engines and the aroma of breakfast tacos fill the air as we broadcast live from the Tailpipes and Tacos cruise-in at Lupe' Tortilla in Katy, Texas. This popular gathering of automotive enthusiasts provides the perfect backdrop for conversations with passionate car collectors and restorers who share the stories behind their prized vehicles.Stan Holt, the proprietor of Loopy Tortilla and host of the event, sits down with us to discuss his impressive 52-car collection. With characteristic humor, Stan shares the tale of his impulsive purchase of a 1941 Packard at a Mecum Auction despite not registering as a bidder. "The guy was asking me where's your bidder number? I said I don't have a bidder number. He said you can't bid without a bidder number. I said oh yeah, you can. I just bought that," Stan recounts with a laugh. His collection includes everything from this beautiful Packard to a 1971 Cadillac Coupe DeVille with period-correct avocado green interior. We also speak with Trey Sider about his meticulously restored 1958 Plymouth Fury, modeled after the iconic car from Stephen King's "Christine." Trey details the four-year restoration process, including trips to California scrapyards to source authentic parts. His dedication has resulted in a show-winning vehicle that captures the essence of late-1950s automotive design, complete with period-correct interior fabrics and a powerful 392 Hemi engine.Between these fascinating conversations, we discuss upcoming events including the Hot Rod Tour of Texas, which will bring over 300 classic cars through the back roads from Victoria to Madisonville. We also provide a comprehensive review of the 2025 Toyota Corolla and practical recommendations for parents looking to purchase used SUVs for teen drivers.Throughout the episode, nostalgic discussions about automotive history – from cigarette lighters in dashboards to the evolution of power steering – create a rich tapestry of car culture that spans generations. Join us for this celebration of automotive passion where every vehicle has a story to tell and every collector has a unique journey to share.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Scott Hoke from Mecum Auctions joins us from Indianapolis to share what makes the upcoming Houston auction such a compelling destination for car enthusiasts. With his broadcasting career spanning back to 1979, Scott brings decades of automotive passion to our conversation about collector cars and the unique experience Mecum creates."It's the best car show that you'll ever attend because you're probably going to find something or see something that you've never seen before," Scott explains, highlighting how Mecum events offer value beyond just bidding opportunities. The nostalgia factor drives deep connections as visitors reminisce about cars from their past – whether personally owned, admired from afar, or part of family history. The Houston auction, happening April 3-5 at NRG Center, will feature approximately 1,000 vehicles including several standout offerings. A 1963 Chevy II Nova convertible with dark blue exterior and baseball glove leather interior promises to turn heads, while Corvette enthusiasts will appreciate several examples including a rare 2019 ZR1. Second-generation Ford GTs from 2005-2006 continue showing strong market performance and will likely command significant attention. We also take the 2025 Mazda CX-70 PHEV for a test drive. This new addition to Mazda's lineup slots between the CX-50 and CX-90, essentially offering the larger CX-90 platform without the third row. With a distinctive copper exterior paired with red Nappa leather interior, the vehicle makes a bold visual statement. The plug-in hybrid system delivers impressive efficiency when charged, though the 26-mile electric-only range raises questions about the premium price over traditional gasoline models.Whether you're a serious collector ready to bid or simply appreciate automotive history and craftsmanship, both the Mecum Auction and our detailed vehicle reviews offer something valuable. John Kraman knows the car auction business as well as a broadcaster. He's the senior member of the Mecum Auctions team and the only announcer who's been on all 16 years of the country's largest automobile auctions broadcast. He's our guest this week on The Weekly Driver Podcast. With broadcast colleagues and varied responsibility crew, co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia discuss with Kraman the auction's participation Aug. 17-19 in Monterey Auto Week. Mecum is the only daytime auction during what is now nearly a two-week celebration on the Monterey Peninsula of all things automotive. 1963 Shelby 289 Cobra Roadster. Thought to be the 100th production car, per serial number, following the initial prototype car. Billed to Shelby American on March 13, 1963. All images courtesy of Mecum Auctions/2023. The Monterey stop on the Mecum Auctions nearly yearlong circuit is the company's smallest in volume. About 600 vehicles are sold in three days. But the Monterey Auction, held at the Hyatt Regency and the adjoining Old Del Monte Golf Course, has the auction's highest average amount per individual sale. Kraman, a repeat guest who's also a vintage car collector, details how the auction works live and with remote bidding. A mechanic and pilot, Kraman joins his colleagues with a fast-paced presentation. He knows the pedigrees of all of the vehicles and details each one like it's his favorite. 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Race Car. The only 1966 Corvette campaigned by Alan Green Chevrolet and raced by Gary Gove in SCCA AP Class competition. As always, rarities will be highlighted during the Mecum Auctions. But attainable vehicles are the norm. As in past years, vehicles are auctioned every few minutes. It's the only auction televised live during Monterey Auto Week. Here are three unique vehicles ready for auction during Mecum Auction's gathering in Monterey: 1948 Packard Super 8 Convertible Victoria. Currently owned and for the past decade by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, six-time NBA Champion, and the league's only six-time MVP. The Packard was one of 4,750 built for 1948; 1963 Shelby 289 Cobra Roadster. Thought to be the 100th production car, per serial number, following the initial prototype car. Billed to Shelby American on March 13, 1963; 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Race Car.   On Friday's show: For the first time in two years, the Texas Department of State Health Services says fewer than a thousand patients with COVID-19 are being treated in Texas hospitals. Even as increasing percentages of COVID cases are coming from the new BA.2 omicron subvariant, hospitalizations remain down and flat. That, of course, is due to widely available vaccines and treatments, which we did not have in April of 2020. To reflect on how far we've come in fighting the pandemic over the past two years, News 88.7's Paul DeBenedetto speaks with Harris County's chief executive, Judge Lina Hidalgo. Also this hour: When should judges recuse themselves? And what happens when there's a potential conflict of interest, and a judge – or a Supreme Court Justice – doesn't? We'll discuss. Plus: Elon Musk buys a large stake in Twitter, and Mike Tyson's gummies business hits a snag in Colorado. Our non-expert panel weighs in on this week's edition of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. And Michael Hagerty visits this year's Mecum Auction here in Houston, where 1,050 classic and collector cars were sold.

I have to tell you, man, the upcoming Monterey auction is really about to reset the bar. It's such a high profile and important event." Mecum Auctions will return to Monterey following a late July auction in Orlando, Florida. Mecum calls the occasion a "pickup auction.” The mix of a sale at Mecum Auctions during Monterey Auto Week.  JEFF STERNS CONNECTED THROUGH CARS 1:17 And he was offered the opportunity to be the first auctioneer to sell military Humvees to the public. Okay. I went to that auction because he invited me and I thought they brought too much money. So I didn't buy a single one. And about a month and a half later, he says, Hey, we didn't sell enough of those Humvees and you wouldn't even sell enough. Well, the Marine Corps that wanted to be able to create enough dollars in the sale of these Humvees to acquire more equipment. And so I said, Okay, he's bottom line is we need to sell 300 more Humvees and I've been allowed to sell 100 at a time to three people do you want to buy 100 Humvees? I mean that my dad taught me I will tell you the driving force of me playing with specialty stuff you know offshore championship boats and cranes and bulldozers and buses and planes. He taught me a really simple process of valuing used assets and you would be shocked how often it works. And it's just is this this simple. 2:20  Anything that is like new and is serviceable is worth half of new to an end user. Okay, so what we would do or I, I took that on the next step, and I said, Okay, well if $100,000 brand new piece, according to his philosophy is worth 50,000 as long as you still buy parts and service it and it looks like new, then I need to buy it for less than 50. So this to be safe, the more obscure and weird it is, I'll just do half of half. So if I was buying $100,000 piece for 25 grand, it was like new and serviceable. I should be able to sell it for 50. Scott Ales  3:08  Deborah, and I drove from Clinton, Iowa, to this little ramshackle house overlooking a lake. And I'm not kidding you, Jeff 20 or 30 of the coolest cars that you could have met pontoon Fender Ferraris Testarossa, like crazy cool cars.   Jeff Sterns  3:59  car dealer, truck driver, collector of every odd engine boat truck, this that special relationship with bring-a-trailer we'll have to talk about that involved with Mecum. You bought tha list and you bought my Flathead car. politician, banker, semi pastor or real one. Maybe you just come across that way. Are you official? Scott Ales  4:33  Yeah. Jeff Sterns  5:16 Scott Ailes, no matter who I talked to about Scott Ailes, I could never get anyone to say, look, I could get him to say, I wish he paid me more for this. Or he'd beat me out on buying that, or they can get mad about that. But I never heard an integrity or character problem ever. And I think I've known your name. God, I'm not sure but at least 20 years, it might be 25. Jeff Sterns  6:37   I don't know if our audience our car people. When you say, the wholesale car business, do you mind breaking that down a little bit?   Scott Ales  8:27  Yeah, I mean that consequences the key word, the phrase I heard years ago from someone else's. You can choose to do anything you want, but you cannot choose the consequences of your choices. Jeff Sterns  8:42  Now this this Brooklands behind you on your screen there this is your favorite touring it is your favorite touring car. Scott Ales  10:07  Yeah, it's the ultimate sleeper. I mean, it's just so big and heavy. It's a lumbering thing. And it just goes.   Jeff Sterns  10:14  They do what they're supposed to do. Scott Ales  10:15  Yes, sir. Anyway, no, it wasn't the greatest time we started our bank. We got approval from the FDIC to open the bank in December 23 2008. You remember what was going on in  Scott Ales  14:09  It was Deborah my wife of 40 years said to me in 2010 and Dana Mecum the collector car auctioneer, who I met at his first auction.     Scott Ales  17:44   it's fun. I mean, that my dad taught me I will tell you the driving force of me playing with specialty stuff, you know, offshore championship boats and cranes and bulldozers and buses and planes.    Scott Ales  22:31  right? Yeah. What's going on here? And then it's a crop duster. Like, oh my gosh, he's gonna he sprayed poison on the military base and I'm sitting in the parking lot. It's anthrax. I'm in the wrong spot. And then over the radio, oh, FAA releases the ban on flying. So this guy is just out trying to make a living for the first time in months. Right? There's just elements of things you like, no, this is how I'm going to go. I'm gonna get cropped Dustin in the parking lot. Already. military base. Jeff Sterns  23:40  for the for the non car dealer public…. Scott on top of someone who sells a lot online and in person. He's also what's known as a wholesaler. So when we in a dealership, get a car that we're not going to keep or don't we want to keep it but we don't know what it's worth. We'll call someone like Scott. And say I have this factory five Ford GT 40. I think of odd cars when I think of course, it could be any car. I've got this Buick. And either I can't sell it to you. But can you give me an idea what it's    Jeff Sterns  24:52  you talk about being only as good as your word.   Scott Ales  25:41  Yeah, it's cheesy. I like it. In 1988, a guy came in my office in Clinton, Iowa, he put an 86 speed processor computer on my desk, and plugged it into the telephone line and made crazy noises. And I was instantly connected to 65 other dealers like me in the country, and we started reputation trading back and forth.         Jeff Sterns  27:16  But what happens is, sometimes, and this is for, like, let's say the viewing public with zero car experience, this is where the consumer, sometimes the dealer, I'll ask you, if I give you enough for your trade, will you make a deal with me? And the consumer gets frustrated? Because they think, Why do I have to tell you, I'm gonna buy from you for you to give me your best price.   Jeff Sterns  31:20  you actually helped me on a deal through the list. I don't know if you remember, I had a Ferrari ordered for a customer, I want to say 360 Spyder, I want to say could have been the next one, I gave that dealer a $10,000 deposit for the customer that I was representing . In the end, they sold me out and gave my order slot probably to someone that would pay more, even though they've committed to me. And I actually called you directly in you advise before we got the list. Panel involved tribunal. Yeah. To go up against this DMV bond. You gave me that advice? Yeah. And I did make that phone call. And it did clear it up. Very quickly. Scott Ales  33:36 You want to know what life is all about? The next birthday or Christmas? Christmas, especially. Everybody distribute the gifts that they're getting? Go into separate rooms, close the doors and open the gifts and tell me how much fun that is. Right? It's not fun because you don't get to see you're not giving you don't get to see the reaction when you are giving to someone else. That's the essence of fulfillment in life.   Jeff Sterns  34:07  we know that biblically, if you're ever down, just go help someone with something. Yeah. And you'll be up and then I'm a recovery guy. I've been sober 25 years. And you know, we we have a saying Call, call one, help two. So sometimes, like you think, oh, I don't want to be a pain and call the guy. But the guy taking your call and ministering advice or helping is helping himself to of course.         Scott Ales  35:29  I just love it and, and, you know, it's it. You're at the start. I mean, I had this ridiculous first I started mowing the grass at six years old on a six horsepower mower. I have a picture of me on the mower in the back here. I drove my first vehicle was a 74 Ford F 250 highboy, which is all the rage now. Right? My dad bought it. And I drove back in 1973. So I was 11. And then I drove my first semi Kenworth truck we had at 14 using a school permit.     Scott Ales  37:49  I had a years of hauling heavy equipment. I I lost one piece I had a crane I was loading one day that fell off the trailer while I was in it. That was exciting. do certain things and as the moment pass I'm like oh, that was really stupid. Oh my god. But yeah, so am I my dad. Oh, it's so cool. I mean, my dad was such a character. He bought two new Kenworth trucks in 1976. Right. Okay, so and they were polished out chrome black, white stripes and all this stuff. So they went to pick them up at the dealership, Quad City Kenworth in the Midwest, and he doesn't come home for a while. So my mom goes looking for him. Well, so he thought might be fun to go around bar hopping and you know, show off his new choice.           Scott Ales  40:38  my dad gave me the keys to a 74 mark for and let me go on a date. When I was in Hang on a second. seventh grade. how old you are in seventh grade? Scott Ales  40:57  I didn't have my school permit yet. So I showed up at my then girlfriend's house. She goes in the closet and covers all the street kids up with her fur coats.              Scott Ales  44:17 I bought an XJ6 1977 coupe.  . My dealer and I call, our trucking company went broke. And you know, I appreciate you selling me the car. I need a job  And I did. I went up and trained and I was selling dotson's and jaguars and Mercedes within a week. Scott Ales  46:46   The 97 offshore championship boat with triple 1500 horsepower, supercharged motors.    Scott Ales  49:43   I bought a one year old, Primo marathon  .       Scott Ales  51:16  No, you know what, it's just you've seen the buy real estate, no money down. infomercials, right? Yes. Yeah. So that's what I did in 1987. I went to the Sheraton in, in Davenport, Iowa on the river. And I went to the mike and Irene Mullin, buy real estate, no money down seminar, I bought the package. I had no money, I use my credit card. I went home, I read the thing cover to cover. And one thing that clicked with me read the Wall Street Journal, for notices of distress assets. And the next day, I found an apartment complex in Clinton, Iowa being sold at sheriffs auctions and auction in two weeks. And so I got no money, no money, no job. My wife is cutting hair supporting us. And I call this attorney like, I'm a millionaire. Yeah, tell me about the property. You know, like, Can you send me a package? Yeah, sure.   ever a hurricane, we should go buy those boats. So fast forward Three years later, the day before Hurricane Andrew hits, he calls me says, Hey, I got two tickets. Like I'm in the middle of my, you know, thought process about living in Iowa and managing of complex that we're both at what do you talk to? Where are we going? Florida? It's gonna be hurricane. We're gonna go buy some of those boats.    Scott Ales  59:58  it's a 17 foot century, beautiful.     Jeff Sterns  1:01:58   you bought my 31 Ford which was a nod to a 32 B model Ford highboy Flathead.             Scott Ales  1:03:41  But I love flatheads my first vehicle was off was a 42 Ford pickup that my dad gave me that he bought in North Dakota for 500 bucks.             Jeff Sterns  1:06:11  you met Dana Mecum 30 years before that. Yeah. How did you meet he said at his first auction.   Scott Ales  1:06:18  I consigned an 84 Corvette to his first auction.                   Scott Ales  1:14:25  I think, for some people, they're so suspicious and concerned about being taken advantage of, if you go to an auction and resolve a value that you want to buy a vehicle for, or even more critically and difficult. Determine what you will sell your vehicle for. Like that's the hardest thing for people, right?               Jeff Sterns  1:18:37  I think where no reserve wins is it brings more competitors, it brings more people bidding against each other. They say to themselves, there's no way I'm gonna let this thing sell for 20 grand, I think it's worth 50 grand, it's at 20 grand. So I'm gonna start bidding on it. I'm gonna get involved.   Scott Ales  1:19:11  I am bought and sold a lot of vehicles at auction. And it's probably since the The first thing I ever bought at an auction was night teen 75 a set of bull horns at a farm auction, right. And whatever my heart rate was doing that day when I really wanted those and I got them for 20 bucks.         Jeff Sterns  1:29:30  bring a trailer is famous for not accepting. Yeah, every entry even when the seller is certain that they've got the coolest low mile interesting equipment.       Jeff Sterns  1:29:49  I haven't. I don't spend night and day analyzing but I haven't figured out their algorithm or is I've heard about some cars they turned down that surprised me.   Scott Ales  1:30:00  Yeah, well, it to their credit, I believe that one of the most valuable aspects of their business model is to Don't be predictable             Scott Ales  1:35:42  So like the first boat should have brought three or 4000 He goes, Okay boys, you know, what do you want to pay? You know, who paid $10,000 to pay? 5000? You know, he start high and they come down. How about How about $500? Guy raises his hand for $500? He goes so $500. And the crowds like… what??     Scott Ales  1:42:49… the most visceral car that I ever was behind the wheel of was a street rod built by Tom Coyote. It was a 14 150 horsepower. Alcohol injected Pontiac.    ……         Jeff Sterns  1:52:04  And you have a cleaning process, Dryce dry ice. It's not making contact with the material, but turning into a gas that's cleaning, if I recall you explaining I've watched a few of your videos, but it removes everything that wasn't originally there and leave everything that was originally there, whether it be metal, leather, whatever.   Scott Ales  1:52:29  Yeah, the shortest version of explanation is this. can dry ice upon impact when accelerated against a substrate or surface converts from a solid to a gas. And that's a thermal reaction.       Scott Ales  1:54:19  Yeah. So the number one thing that I would say about buying at auction is seek and find someone that is experienced. And then just ask them to hold your hand a little bit. It's it doesn't have to be me. There's plenty of people that have been doing it for decades.     Scott Ales  2:01:02   I don't know when you love what you do. And you're passionate about it. And you like people and I do. You know, the only the only challenge for me has been being fair to my only child and my wife of 40 years. And, and to their credit, they have been an amazingly tolerant of, you know, my career path.     Jeff Sterns  2:02:08  Well, that's beautiful. And that's you know, a wonderful thing about you one of the things that make you legendary I mean you're you're putting you're dodging compliments, you're putting the credit where it belongs, you're honoring your wife, you're, you love your son, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. And I want to thank you, man

Hosts Matt Avery and John Kraman are saddling up in this On The Move to focus on motorcycles. But before they get to the two-wheeled talk, there’s a bit of car news to touch on. A new Mecum Magazine has hit the digital newsstands, and the guys take time to share what they penned in the latest issue. John’s "At the Redline" column goes into the social aspect of automotive events and gatherings, as well as the special way relationships develop through a love of transportation. Meanwhile, Matt’s "Free Revs" feature spotlights a rare bird coming to the Mecum Las Vegas auction: a 2002 Year One Edition Blackbird Trans Am that is just one of eight created. Speaking of Sin City, John just returned from a trip out there, where he took part in a television taping for a special "Mecum Presents" focusing on a pair of standout Shelby vehicles. John recaps how it went, including what it was like to hear from Peter Brock, Carroll Shelby’s first employee, and Brock's memories of Shelby operations back in the day. Though, the fun didn’t stop there for John, who had the chance to visit Shelby American’s nearby headquarters and see one of its latest creations: the F150 Super Snake Sport. Top versions of the ultra-hot hauler boast 770 HP and a $93,385 price tag. Matt has truck news, too, sharing how Ford will be offering a Tremor off-road package on the Ranger pickup truck for 2021. The package costs $4,290 and brings upgrades like a lifted suspension, bigger wheels and tires, and skid plates. No adjustments are made to the powertrain, causing the guys to revisit a familiar question: will the forthcoming Bronco get bigger power in the form of a V-8? Wrapping up the car news, Matt tells of Maserati’s new MC20. The two-seat Italian exotic boasts a twin-turbo V-6, 630 HP and a claimed zero to 62 MPH time of 2.9 seconds. From there, the crew gears up for a discussion on motorcycles, with Mecum Auction’s Motorcycle Auction Manager Greg Arnold in the studio. The "Spokes Man" fills in Matt and John on how the division has grown and how things are gearing up for the 30th Annual Vintage and Antique Motorcycle Auction slated for January 26-31 in Las Vegas. Greg also takes time to shine the spotlight on one of the show's stars, a 1950 Vincent Black Lightning that is expected to bring a half-million dollars when it crosses the auction block. Wrapping up the show, it’s time for another On the Move Vehicle Profile, with Matt and John taking a close look at the first-generation Camaro produced from 1967 through 1969. The guys discuss the car’s development, the strategy employed by Chevrolet to get it out into the marketplace, some of the famous performance variants, including the legendary Z28, and various options like RPO L89 and JL8.

Then, John shares some personal highlights from watching this year’s 104th running of the Indianapolis 500 (including his affinity for the C8 Corvette pace car) while Matt jumps right to car news, explaining how Jaguar will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of its iconic E-type. To mark the March 2021 occasion, Jaguar Classic is creating six limited-edition matched pairs of restored 3.8 E-types, modeled after the first pair shown to the public in Geneva, Switzerland. The cars have become known by their registration numbers, 9600 HP and 77 RW, and were painted Opalescent Gunmetal Grey and British Racing Green, with the new ones mimicking those color schemes. Pricing for the collector’s items haven’t been announced, but they are available for order now. Then, the guys move on to talk about the 2021 Ram TRX, detailing that all 702 Launch Editions sold out in just a handful of hours. The hot haulers all come painted in Anvil, receive a customized badge and cost more than $90,000. Next up is Jeep’s tease of the upcoming Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, with the brand announcing the reveal will take place on September 3. Matt and John highlight the deep heritage of the model and ponder how it’ll stack up against some of the existing players in the space. Matt and John then shift gears to chat with featured guest Steve Matchett, a former Formula 1 Grand Prix mechanic, author and TV host. Steve shares how he got his start in the industry, first apprenticing as a teenager at a Mazda dealership in England, and then tells of his transition to the Graypaul Ferrari dealership and how he got his break into the world of Formula 1 in 1990. Along the way, he also shares how he bought a farmhouse in the French countryside and set about writing, including penning his best seller, "The Mechanic’s Tale." Wrapping up the show, Matt and John are revved up for the upcoming Mecum Dallas auction (taking place October 15-17), and to get ready, they select three special highlights from the growing list of consignments. What catches Matt’s eye is a 2006 Cadillac XLR, a 1967 Amphicar 770 and a 1965 Porsche 356 C. Meanwhile, John is smitten with a 1990 Chevrolet 454SS, a 1967 Pontiac GTO and a 2006 Ford GT.

There’s a slew of car news to address in this episode of On The Move, and hosts Matt Avery and John Kraman kick it off with a big announcement—Mecum Auctions is returning to Indy this October 29-31 for a brand new event called the Fall Special. The auction's set to be held once again at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, the site of the company’s recent 33rd annual flagship auction that once again set records, selling the world’s most expensive Mustang (a 1965 Shelby GT350R that hammered at $3.85 million) and exceeding $74 million in overall sales. Matt and John point out there’s even more Mecum auctions before then, including the upcoming Summer Special, slated for August 27-29 in Kissimmee, Florida. Then it’s talk of FCA’s phasing away with the long-running Dodge Caravan, as well as a spotlight on an often-overlooked Pacifica model with the retro Voyager name. More news of phasing comes with chat of the Journey crossover also being removed from the brand’s lineup. Matt and John ponder replacements before moving on to rumblings that Toyota may offer its Supra with a manual transmission. Matt thinks that’ll help the model connect with enthusiasts who haven’t been overly smitten with the sports car. Slowing things down, John is charged up about some recent actions in the electric pickup truck space while Matt goes full throttle for Shelby American’s announcement of the new GT500 Signature Edition; just 100 will be built, with the package costing just under $30,000 but promising output of over 800 HP. Then, in Segment 2, the guys chat with featured guest, motorsports journalist and TV host Ralph Sheheen. Ralph goes into how he got bit by the racing bug. It started as a young boy when his family went to the original Sacramento Fairgrounds Mile to see the USAC Dirt Champ Cars driven by legendary stars like Mario Andretti and A.J. Foyt. Then the veteran on-air talent goes into his announcing career, including his hosting of the AMA Supercross motorcycle races. He also recounts how Speedsport, the online destination for racing news, grew from a black and white newspaper in 1934 to multiple online properties. Finally, John asks what kinds of collectible rides catch his eye when he’s at a Mecum Auction; the answer includes everything from a Ferrari F50 and a 1978 Porsche 911 Turbo to a 1969 Camaro Resto Mod and a three-window 1932 Hot Rod. Wrapping up the show, Segment 3 rolls out a new feature called Motoring Milestones where Matt and John discuss and debate significant and special makes, models, personalities and more within the automotive industry and collector car hobby. In this inaugural piece, the guys are fired up for what they consider one of the most impactful engines of all time: Chevrolet’s small-block. They go into the iconic powerplant’s origins and all the different applications and configurations it’s been offered in, as well as why it’s been readily embraced by the aftermarket community.

Responses to Show's Preliminary Q&AWHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING AND IS IT RELATED TO CLASSIC CARS OR MUSTANGS?I am a freelance designer, writer and photographer for not only Mustang books, but hobby "how-to" books on scale modeling. I also do graphic design and book design. A few of my props have appeared on popular TV shows.IS THERE ANYTHING SPECIFIC YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE ON THE SHOW? IF YOU ARE IN THE CLASSIC CAR BUSINESS (SELLING, REPAIRING, RESTORING, PRODUCTS OR SERVICES PROVIDED TO OWNERS) WHAT CAN WE PROMOTE ON THE SHOW TO OUR COMMUNITY OF MUSTANG OWNERS?I would like to talk about the Mustang owner experience, not only about driving (myself, 400,000 miles), but how to be resourceful for a long-term ownership of the car. The Mustang evokes great pride and passion, and that's what I like to talk about.IF YOU OWN A MUSTANG OR CLASSIC CAR, HAVE YOU NAMED YOUR CAR? IF SO, WHAT IS HIS/HER NAME?I owned my (Maroon) GT/California Special between April 1974 and May 2010. I put 400,000 miles on it.HOW LONG HAVE YOU OWNED YOUR CLASSIC RIDE?April 1974, bought for $1,500....and sold in 2010 to pay for the printing of my GT/CS Recognition Guide bookIF YOU'VE MADE IMPROVEMENTS TO YOUR CLASSIC CAR OR RESTORED IT, WHAT WORK HAVE YOU DONE?Mostly upkeep; I changed the engine twice, and transmission once. The addition of a Cobra intake and Holly 600 did wonders!!DO YOU WORK ON YOUR CLASSIC CARS YOURSELF OR DO YOU HAVE A MECHANIC OR SHOP DO THE WORK? EXPLAIN PLEASEWhen I owned it, I did all my work myself, except for brakes, etc.WHAT PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR IMPROVEMENTS/RESTORATION/MODIFICATION OF YOUR CLASSIC CAR?I would have totally restored my GT/CS, but I chose to spend my money on telling the GT/CS story in my books (1988, 2011).WHAT ARE YOU PROMOTING?Paul’s Book: Mustang GT/CS Recognition Guide & Owner's Manual: Limited EditionLet’s make my GT/CS Recognition Guide books, available for $395.00.  New condition, signed and numbered.Reach out to Paul directly pmndesigns@earthlink.netAUCTION UPDATEBullitt Auction Information: https://ktla.com/2020/01/10/1968-ford-mustang-gt-in-bullitt-becomes-most-valuable-mustang-ever-sold-at-auction/Have an idea for the show or think you'd make a great guest, send an email to the host:doug@turnkeypodcast.comThanks for listening, keep it safe, keep in rollin’ and keep it on the road! #95, Mecum Auctions defines fun during Monterey Auto Week

Somewhere on the spectrum between the Concours d'LeMons and Concours d'Elegance, the three-day Mecum Auctions during Monterey Auto Week is perfectly positioned. Attainable daily drivers to rarities, it's an automotive whirlwind of buying and selling. The country's largest automotive auction, Mecum annually progresses to 13 stops around the country, January through December and Kissimmee, Fla. to Louisville, Ky., to Monterey. Its offerings include seven-figure works of art on wheels, family heirlooms, celebrity-owned cars, oddities and cars of infamous pedigree. A 1954/1959 Ferrari 0432M from the collection of Dana Patti Mecum will be auctioned during Mecum Auctions' three-day auction during Monterey Auto Week. Image courtesy of Mecum Auctions. "I call it a car show with a pulse," said John Kraman, Mecum's long-time director of consignments and a television commentator's during the auction's extensive television broadcasts on NBCSN. "I think that's accurate." Kraman is our guest on episode #95 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia discuss with Kraman, the mix of cars and motorcycles included in this year's event. The Mecum Auction in Monterey, scheduled Aug. 14-16, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency and Old Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey, California, has some of both extremes and everything between. "We all go to car shows, and it's great," said Kraman. "But there's something a little bit extra, a little magic about the cars moving on the runway, the grumbling and the auction environment itself." Mecum's Auction, the only daytime auction during Monterey Auto Week, is expected to sell about 600 vehicles during its three-day run. Thursday, as Kraman relates, is an open day. A 1968 Oldsmobile worth $15,000 is more than welcome. "We like entry-level, normal traditional Mecum customers, seeking affordable cars," Kraman said. Friday and Saturday auctions are "catalog days" featuring vehicles are with reserve pricing set at least $50,000. The catalog days are closed for sellers; the Thursday auction remains open for sellers. "Come out, buy or sell a car or spectate; it doesn't matter," said Kraman. "We invite everybody and then give them time to do other things in the evening." In recent years, Mecum Auctions' selling trends in Monterey have included vintage pickups, muscle cars and certain varieties of Volkswagen vans. This year, the emphasis will be on individuals' collections. "We are dependent on what consigners want to bring to our auction," said Kraman. "It's not like we pick and choose what we want to come to our auction. This year, it's collections. "We have nine separate collections from some of the top collectors. We're talking, pre-war classics to modern exotics. An eclectic mix of collections is going to be the headline news." Dana Mecum, the company founder, and his wife Patti are selling vehicles from their private collection including a 1954/1959 Ferrari 0432 and a 1965 Shelby 289 Cobra CSX2588. The latter was the last of its kind sold to the public. Mecum Auctions also has a second-chance auction. It's called "bid goes on." It comprises about 10 percent of vehicle sales. "Your best opportunity to get it sold is still while the vehicle is up on the red carpet," Kraman said. "That's our business model. But four full-timers are working in the bid-goes-on process. We will try to get a deal that way for about 50-60 cars." Mecum Auctions' haul of cars and motorcycles in this year's event and well as schedule details and television broadcast times are available on www.mecum.com. Tickets are $20 in advance, $30 at the auction.

Car auctions are a significant component of Classic Car Week, attainable vehicles to one-of-a-kind rarities. Every auction house has its own style, and many auction attendees are veteran bidders with years of experience. Still, a refresher course for experienced car auction buyers and an introduction to proper bidding etiquette for new auction enthusiasts is a good thing. A Rolls-Royce on the auction block at the 2017 Mecum Auction during the 2017 Classic Car Week on the Monterey Peninsula. Image © Bruce Aldrich/2017 Chris Warren of Premier Financial Services, a leading provider of lease financing for exotic, vintage and luxury cars, is our guest Episode 50 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Bruce Aldrich and I have a lively discussion with Warren about proper etiquette and the ins-and-outs of car auctions. Classic Car Week includes six major auctions beginning Tuesday, Aug. 21. A vast selection of the world's finest and most expensive exotic and vintage cars, rare motorcycles and muscle cars and many attainable vehicles will be auctioned. Here are a few of the topics discussed to during the podcast: • Don't Jump in the Pool Right Away – Attend one or two auctions strictly as an observer, to gain a first-hand understanding of how they work. Pay attention to how serious buyers conduct themselves and the bidding tactics they use. • Get Pre-approval Before You Show Up – At many auctions, you'll need to apply for credentials to participate in the bidding. The auction company will likely review your financial situation. If you plan to finance or lease the car you purchase, you should obtain pre-approval from a firm that specializes in exotic and vintage cars. • Don't Follow the Herd – Bid on a vehicle that you really want to own and drive, not just because there's a lot of buzz or interest in a particular car.
