Peace Matters - A Podcast on Contemporary Geopolitics and International Relations
In this episode, we explore the intricate geopolitical dynamics of the South Caucasus, focusing on Georgia and Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan plays a crucial role as a key energy supplier and transit route, connecting Europe and Asia, and its relationship with Georgia is vital for both economic cooperation and security. The discussion highlights how Georgia's pursuit of Western integration is perceived as a choice between Western alignment and Russian influence – an issue central to the upcoming parliamentary elections in the country. We also delve into the EU's role in the region, emphasizing the need for a cohesive strategy that prioritizes peace and stability amid diverse national ambitions. The conversation extends to other regional powers, including Iran, Turkey, and China, examining their influence and interests in the South Caucasus. Both regional actors and the EU must "unlearn" outdated perceptions and adapt to new realities, fostering constructive dialogue and economic cooperation. Guests: Maia Panjikidze is a Georgian diplomat and politician who served as the country's Foreign Minister from 2012 to 2014. She was Georgia's Ambassador to Germany from 2004 to 2007 and to the Netherlands from 2007 to 2010. A PhD in German Studies and a graduate of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena and Tbilisi State University, she is also a freelance translator and author of works on German language and literature. Panjikidze translates between Georgian and German and has made significant contributions in both fields. Zaur Shiriyev is a nonresident scholar at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center. His research focuses on security, conflict-resolution and foreign-policy issues relating to the South Caucasus; energy security and supply routes across that region, southeastern Europe and Central Asia; and on Azerbaijani and Turkish foreign policy. For two decades he has worked in academia and think tanks. He has also actively taken part in expert-level meetings on the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process. Moderation: Marylia Hushcha, Researcher and Project Manager at the IIP. Recorded on 15 October 2024.

We live in an age where drones are everywhere. In this episode, host Dev Goswami and defence expert Shiv Aroor delve into the world of UAVs or UAS, commonly known as drones. These unmanned air systems have played pivotal roles in global events, from the U.S. war on terror to conflicts in Ukraine, Israel-Hamas, and Azerbaijan-Armenia. Despite their ubiquitous presence, popular culture and mainstream defense writing lag in portraying the significance of these non-human aircraft. Why?While India boasts a list of domestically manufactured drones, none are currently in service. The discussion delves into the reasons behind India's delayed adoption and the increasing involvement of private companies in the drone ecosystem. The duo also contemplates the potential takeover of drones by AI, about the elimination of the human loop and the future of drone warfare. What game-changing effects drones can have in military operations? What are the challenges faced by the military in drone usage, including concerns about proliferation and security threats from terrorists and non-state actors. The ultimate question remains: Is drone warfare here to stay, and how will it shape the landscape of future conflicts?Tune in to listen!Produced by Anna PriyadarshiniSound Mix by Kapil Dev Singh

First, we examine a series of conflicts in Europe, and discuss how Eurovision's increasingly dominant self-conception as "apolitical" has hampered its ability to consistently confront contemporary events. Then, we talk to Fazla, who escaped Sarajevo under siege in the dead of night-- dodging sniper fire and scaling a mountain barefoot to make it to Eurovision and deliver a very important message. Finally, we comedian Jeff Hiller (Somebody, Somewhere) examines how even Eurovision's campiest numbers can carry important messages in a game we're calling "Is That A Political Message in Your Pocket, Or Are You Just Happy To See Me?" Last week, as the world's attention remained fixated on the diplomatic row with Canada, a significant and alarming development unfolded in the Caucasus when Thousands of ethnic Armenians fled from Nagorno-Karabakh following the region's surrender to Azerbaijan on September 20th. This region is home to a majority of approximately 120,000 ethnic Armenians. What transpired was the resurgence of a long-standing conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The Lachin Corridor, a vital road, serves as the sole connection between the Republic of Armenia and the population of Nagorno-Karabakh. This corridor plays a crucial role in supplying essential goods, and residents in Nagorno-Karabakh have reported severe shortages of basic necessities like food and medication in recent months.Meanwhile, Azerbaijan has accused Armenia of using this corridor to transport military supplies, a claim strongly denied by Armenia. Baku, Azerbaijan's capital, has also asserted that it offered food and aid through an alternate route, but Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh refused to accept it.Only recently, Azeri forces attacked Stepanakert, forcing the separatists to hand over full control to Baku. The conflict still claimed many lives, enabled mass displacement and triggered turmoil across the wider region. And another major humanitarian crisis is looming on the horizon.Given these unfolding events, Our host Anna Priyadarshini and foreign affairs editor at India Today, TV Today Network Geeta delve into the core of this conflict. They seek to understand why this war has resurfaced, explore the underlying reasons, examine the roles of Russia and the United States in this crisis, and assess the global implications of the refugee crisis that has arisen as a result.Listen in!Produced by Anna PriyadarshiniSound Mix by Kapil Dev Singh

"War was always central to Putin's project," writes Alex J. Bellamy in Warmonger: Vladimir Putin's Imperial Wars (Agenda, 2023). Not just the second Chechen war that made him but the NATO-probing wars in Georgia and eastern Ukraine that emboldened him, and the Western-style war from air in Syria designed to mark Russia's return to Great Power status. But, the project has not gone well. According to Professor Bellamy, the military and strategic disaster of Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine had long been foretold. In Syria, unable to control his client, Putin has been outwitted and outgunned by his Turkish imperial rival, which has also shifted the balance of power against Moscow in the long-running Azerbaijan/Armenia conflict. Even apparent success in Chechnya was bought by outsourcing to the Kadyrov clan, who run the republic independently at enormous cost to the Kremlin. "War has finally caught up with the warmonger," writes Bellamy. "Should Russia's imperial dreaming survive its battering in Ukraine, and it is by no means certain that it will, it will be a Potemkin empire existing only in the minds of those who parrot its tropes". Alex J. Bellamy is Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies at The University of Queensland. Since Kosovo and International Society in 2002, he has written 15 books as sole author including World Peace (And How We Can Achieve It) in 2019 and Syria Betrayed: Atrocities, War, and the Failure of International Diplomacy in 2022. *The author's own book recommendations are The Last Empire: The Final Days of the Soviet Union by Serhii Plokhy (Oneworld Publications, 2014) and Dominion: The Making of the Western Mind by Tom Holland (Little Brown, 2019). AP correspondent Charles de Ledesma reports on Azerbaijan Armenia cease-fire
Last week, on May 25, the digital-rights group Access Now broke a story revealing that Pegasus spyware was used to hack civil-society figures in Armenia. Notably, these infiltrations took place against the backdrop of the conflict with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh — making this investigation's findings the first documented evidence of Pegasus spyware being used in the context of an international war. Never heard of Pegasus? Well, buckle up. Developed by the Israeli firm NSO Group, this frighteningly sophisticated piece of hacking software is capable of infecting both iOS and Android devices through so-called “zero-click” attacks. In other words, it can worm its way into your phone — often by exploiting vulnerabilities that the manufacturer has yet to find and fix — and you'd be none the wiser. Once installed, Pegasus grants total access to your device, allowing the hacker to not only view your messages, emails, and photos, but also track your phone's location, record calls, and use the camera and microphone to capture what's going on around you. “Basically, the attacker gets control of the settings and has even more control than you yourself have over your device,” Natalia Krapiva, a tech-legal counsel at Access Now, told Eilish Hart, editor of Meduza's weekly newsletter The Beet, in an interview for this week's show. Fresh clashes broke out just days ago between Azerbaijan and Armenia leaving more than 150 dead. Both sides have traded blame for breaking a Russian-brokered ceasefire that ended the 6-week-long Karabakh war back in 2020. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan voiced his support for Baku and he also warned Armenia could suffer consequences for further provocations in the South Caucasus. On Wednesday, thousands took to the streets in Yerevan, demanding Nikol Pashinyan's resignation over the reported ceasefire. The two ex-Soviet states have been embroiled in a decades-long dispute over Karabakh. EU Council President Charles Michel described the meeting as a step towards peace. He hosted between the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia. The two countries fought a bitter war back in 2020, and have yet to resolve several outstanding issues,,, including the demarcation of their border, the return of detainees from the conflict, and the opening of transport links. The EU, which recently signed a major natural gas deal with Azerbaijan, has been a key mediator in peace talks. The meeting follows last month's clashes in the Karabakh region that left three soldiers dead. Both Armenia and Azerbaijan accused each other of breaching a Russian-brokered ceasefire that ended their six-week war. Karabakh is internationally recognized as being part of Azerbaijan, but has been illegally occupied by Armenia since 1991. Baku was able to regain several cities in the 2020 war, which killed more than 6,600 people. Several rounds of peace talks, which have also been hosted by Russia, have tried to resolve long standing issues and to prevent future conflicts in this energy rich region. In this episode of the Defence Connect podcast, former Royal Marine Commando and filmmaker Emile Ghesson joins host Liam Garman to discuss his recent film 45 Days – The Fight For A Nation documenting the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, as well as his last three months monitoring the conflict in Ukraine. The podcast begins with a reflection of Ghesson's 12-year career as a Royal Marine, spanning service across the world including Afghanistan and Iraq before working as a high-profile body guard. The pair then discuss Ghesson's turn toward documentary making, joining colleagues in Syria to document the fight against ISIS in 2017, Ukraine in 2019 and Azerbaijan-Armenia in 2020-2021. 45 Days - The Fight For A Nation analyses the recent Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict from a humanitarian perspective, while examining the history of intergenerational trauma in Armenia dating back to the Armenian genocide. However, when promoting the film in Hollywood –Russia's began their invasion of Ukraine, prompting Ghesson to travel to Ukraine to document the day-to-day of life in Ukraine. Ghesson details his last three months in Ukraine, providing insight into the recent conflict direct from the front lines – including failures within Russian military strategy, irregular warfare behind enemy lines, the recent siege of Mariupol, and a discussion around the hotly debated Azov Regiment. To learn more about Ghesson, you can visit his page here or view his recent film 45 Days: The Fight For A Nation here. Enjoy the podcast, The Defence Connect Team

*) Poles fire tear gas, water cannon at migrants on Belarus border Polish forces have fired tear gas and water cannon at refugees at the Belarusian border, sparking accusations from Belarus that Poland was trying to escalate the crisis. Up to 4,000 refugees and migrants are camped out on the frontier between Poland and Belarus in increasingly dire conditions and freezing temperatures. The European Union accuses Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko of orchestrating the crisis by luring people to the border to retaliate against the bloc's sanctions. *)Tensions stabilised at Azerbaijan, Armenia border Clashes on the Azerbaijan-Armenia border have ceased after both countries took steps to stabilise the situation. A statement from the Russian Defence Ministry said the border is currently back to normal. Azerbaijan had earlier said that the Armenian forces carried out “large-scale provocations” against the combat posts of the Azerbaijani army, injuring at least two soldiers. *) Saudi-led coalition in Yemen kills scores of Houthis The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen has claimed that it killed 130 Houthi rebels in military operations in the past 24 hours. It also destroyed 16 military vehicles, the coalition said. But the Houthi rebel group maintains only 12 of its fighters were killed. *) UN Palestinian refugee agency faces 'existential threat' The UN agency for Palestinian refugees has fallen well short of its target to plug a 100 million dollar gap this year and secure long-term funding despite fresh pledges from donors. UNRWA warned it was facing an "existential" threat as it urged the international community to commit to more stable financing at a conference in Brussels on Tuesday. It said donors committed an extra $38 million for this year, leaving the agency some $60 million short. The UN agency needs to find $800 million a year going forward. And finally... *) 'Harry Potter' stars, excluding J.K. Rowling, to reunite for TV special "Harry Potter" stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint are reuniting with other cast members for a special 20th anniversary TV retrospective. But "Harry Potter" author JK Rowling will not be among those making a personal appearance on the show. The special will be broadcast on January 1st on the streaming platform HBO Max.
