Organizational leaders can use the power of behavioral economics to not only make better decisions themselves, but by leading their employees, their customers, and their stakeholders to make wiser decisions, make the company more effective, and also make society better off as a result.Max H. Bazerman is Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School and the Co-Director of the Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School. Don A. Moore is Professor in Leadership and Communication at Berkeley Haas and serves as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Their most recent book “Decision Leadership: Empowering Others to Make Better Choices" deals with how successful leaders can maximize the potential of others by empowering them to make better decisions.Max and Don are joining Greg to discuss how thinking systematically can help leaders make better decisions and create an environment for more people within their organizations to make more deliberate, smarter, and more ethical decisions. They are also exchanging ideas about the importance of empowering employees and rewarding wise decision-making within organizations, even when that means taking a risk.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:On helping leaders create better decisions for their organizations[Max H. Bazerman] 10:50: When we think about leadership, we often think about people moving heavy objects from one side of the factory to the other. That isn't what most of our leaders coming out of Haas and HBS are doing these days. They're guiding an organization to make better decisions. And that's where the decision factory idea comes from, and that's where our motivation comes from—to help leaders create better decisions throughout their organization.Encouraging decision-makers to have leadership perspective[Don A. Moore] 12:34: We want to encourage decision-makers to think broadly about their interests and the interests of those who are affected by their decisions. That is the leader's perspective—not just what serves my interests but the long-term interests of the stakeholders, the organization, and others affected by my decisions, those who depend on me, and those I influence.Everyone has the power to exercise leadership[Don A.Moore] 50:25: If leadership is about affecting the behavior of those around us, then each and every one of us has some power to exercise leadership. Now, by virtue of their structural location in the organization, some of us have more such influence than others. But it is common for people to make the mistake of underestimating how much influence they have to guide the thinking and behavior of those around them.On being a good mentor[Max H. Bazerman] 36:17: One of the things that made me good as a mentor, and probably what I've been best at in my career, is not just telling them what to do but benefiting from what they can do better than I can do and bringing that together in an integrated way.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Howard Raiffa “The Art and Science of Negotiation”Cass SunsteinDavid LaibsonMichael NortonDaniel KahnemanKeith StanovichRichard WestunSILOed - John List EpisodeunSILOed - Max H. Since 2021, Democrats have controlled the House, the Senate and the presidency, and they've used that power to pass consequential legislation, from the American Rescue Plan to the Inflation Reduction Act. That state of affairs was exceptional: In the 50 years between 1970 and 2020, the U.S. House, Senate and presidency were only under unified party control for 14 years. Divided government has become the norm in American politics. And since Republicans won back the House in November, it is about to become the reality once again. But that doesn't mean policymaking is going to stop — far from it. As America's national politics have become more and more gridlocked in recent decades, many consequential policy decisions have been increasingly pushed down to the state level. The ability to receive a legal abortion or use recreational marijuana; how easy it is to join a union, purchase a firearm or vote in elections; the tax rates we pay and the kind of health insurance we have access to: These decisions are being determined at the state level to an extent not seen since before the civil rights revolution of the mid-twentieth century.Jake Grumbach is a political scientist at the University of Washington and the author of the book “Laboratories Against Democracy: How National Parties Transformed State Politics.” In it, Grumbach tracks this shift in policymaking to the states and explores its implications for American politics. Our national mythologies present state government as less polarizing, more accountable to voters and a hedge against anti-democratic forces amassing too much power. But, as Grumbach shows, in an era of national political media, parties and identities, the truth is a lot more complicated. So this conversation is a guide to the level of government that we tend to pay the least attention to, even as it shapes our lives more than any other.Mentioned:Dynamic Democracy by Devin Caughey and Christopher Warshaw“Does money have a conservative bias? In a world of hundreds of decisions every day, how do you reconcile your ethics and biases? Max Bazerman, award-winning author, distinguished educator, and Jesse Isidor Straus Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, discusses his book, Better, Not Perfect. He shares how to become aware, honest, efficient, and smart about the decisions we make while not seeking the unrealistic standard of perfection. The framework he made outlines how to reach sustainability and maximum goodness. During this conversation, he and host Greg La Blanc discuss Bazerman's take on ethical and moral decision-making and corruption. He also talked about how rationality obstructs us from having a utilitarian point of view.Do not miss his discussion on loyalty and how it prevents us from doing good. Finally, take notes as he discusses how universities create value in shaping these decision-making skills.Episode Quotes:Thoughts on whether you can guide and change a person's decision-making processWe've done an amazing job of identifying when people make mistakes, the systematic and predictable ways we'll make mistakes. But we've made very little in terms of fixing human intuition… The core idea is that we make most of our decisions intuitively, deliberately, meaning thinking more systematically. It means asking smart friends. It means crowdsourcing. It means using artificial intelligence. So, we have lots of ways of endangering our more deliberate thought processes. And when we do, we are less f****d. So, we both have people out of system one to system two, to an individual level and at a more systemic level as ways to improve our decision-making —even if we can't improve our underlying intuition. In what ways do you make emphatic decisions at the same time have a larger impact? What I want to do is provide a very, very different model. So, how do you create the balance? I don't know, I think there's no one simple answer to that. But, here are just my simple predictions. My guess is, if you could audit your lines and identify various weights —where you sacrificed both your time and your money. You could create more good. That seems like a really good start.Thoughts on corruption on university admissions and people being willfully blindI think that most of us, we're not going to perpetuate the next newspaper-worthy scandal, but we may well be around and see. And too often, we do too little to stop it. So, view it as my obligation and my moral obligation as a professor to speak up against the policy of legacy admissions in giving favorites — the children of alumni, of donors, of faculty. I think giving special consideration to people who are already part of our fairly small moral tribe means that we ended up discriminating against lots of other people who aren't in that circle. Why do people choose not to act for the greater good? Are they lacking empathy or understanding of their utility? There was a movement that argues that once you want to give your available dollars locally, or once you want to give it to your group —your own religious group ﹘ probably limited how effective you can be in terms of your charitable dollars. Since in many cases, your charitable dollars can have a much greater impact in some organization that's more distant from you. So, as soon as we had a trial we're putting up barriers, How much good can we do as soon as we're selfish? We're putting up a barrier to doing as much good as we can do as soon we're limiting how much good we can do.Show LinksGuest ProfileHarvard University ProfileAwards, Honors and DistinctionsMax Bazerman on Twitter His WorkBetter, Not Perfect: A Realist's Guide to Maximum Sustainable Goodness The Power of Experiments: Decision Making in a Data-Driven WorldBlind Spots: Why We Fail to Do What's Right and What to Do About ItSocial Decision Making: Social Dilemmas, Social Values, and Ethical JudgmentsNegotiation Genius: How to Overcome Obstacles and Achieve Brilliant Results at the Bargaining Table and BeyondPredictable Surprises: The Disasters You Should Have Seen Coming, and How to Prevent Them (Leadership for the Common Good)Negotiating RationallySmart Money Decisions: Why You Do What You Do with Money (and How to Change for the Better)Environment, Ethics, & Behavior: The Psychology of Environmental Valuation and DegradationJudgment in Managerial Decision Making
In this episode of Managed Care Cast, the lead author of an article in the July issue of The American Journal of Managed Care® describes the latest research that looks at the power of self-insured employers to negotiate hospital prices and the relationship between employer market power and hospital prices. Matthew Eisenberg, PhD, and coauthors used the US Census Bureau County Business Patterns data from 2010 to 2016 to estimate employer market power in metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) and used Truven Health MarketScan commercial claims to estimate mean hospital prices and price ratios at the MSA level. The paper, "Large Self-insured Employers Lack Power to Effectively Negotiate Hospital Prices," notes a few alternative ways that employers have tried to increase their ability to raise their purchasing power, but the success has been limited. Eisenberg, an economist and assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, joined Managed Care Cast to discuss these findings.

Today I am so excited to have Kwame Christian back on the show. Kwame was first on the show back in July of 2020 in episode 107. There aren’t a lot of repeat guests on the show because there are so many people out there I want to talk to and share with you; I am constantly trying to find new voices to bring on. That being said, I had to have Kwame back for a few reasons. For one thing, we have become friends over this past year and I know how much fun he is to talk to and such a wealth of information. When he came on the show we talked about having difficult conversations around race and inequality, which was influenced by the Black Lives Matter movement, the death of George Floyd, and other horrible events that started coming to a greater light in spring 2020. While Kwame quickly became a prominent voice in that space, it isn’t his main focus or real area of genius. While prepping to have Kwame guest lecture for a class I recently taught on internal communication and change management at Texas A&M, I saw that he had a guide about using anchoring as a tool in negotiation and it was a clear opportunity to have him back to talk about his truest expertise – negotiation techniques. Show Notes: [00:06] In today’s episode I’m so excited to have Kwame Christian back on the show, a rare repeat guest, to talk about using anchoring in negotiations. [03:02] Kwame is the director of the American Negotiation Institute and host of the #1 negotiation podcast in the world, Negotiate Anything, which has over 2 million downloads in more than 180 countries. [05:27] At the American Negotiation Institute they do negotiation trainings and business consulting. [08:30] Kwame has a background in psychology. [08:47] Kwame’s philosophy for life is that the best things in life are on the other side of difficult conversations. His goal is to make these difficult conversations easier so you can live the best version of your life. [09:04] Negotiation is a life philosophy that we filter every life conversation through. He thinks of every conversation in terms of a negotiation. [11:39] There is a bias where we think that negotiation has to be adversarial. It doesn’t need to be that way. [12:00] Negotiation is any time you are in a conversation and somebody in the conversation wants something. The people that you negotiate with the most are the people closest to you. [14:24] In every situation somebody wants something even if it is just to be heard or understood. [15:14] If you think of a conversation as a negotiation then you are going to be more explicit with your desires and invite the other person to share what it is they want out of the interaction. [17:31] Any interaction (even when money doesn’t exchange hands), you are still trying to sell someone an idea that you need them to buy in on. [18:06] Anchoring is the most powerful negotiation technique. You should always try to use it in some capacity. [18:31] Anchoring with the most aggressive request that you can reasonably justify. [21:02] If you have as much information or more information then you make the first offer because then you are in a position to create a competent anchor. If you have less information then you let them make the first offer and then you counter them. [22:56] There are some glaring mistakes you can make if you anchor without having enough information. [25:08] We need to be able to distinguish between rejection and resistance. [27:58] The things you say have an impact. You want to calibrate that impact for maximum impact. [29:57] Negotiation Genius talks about how to play defense when someone else anchors you. [31:20] Anchoring plays a huge role in our psychology and if we don’t recognize it we are going to do things that have a subtle impact on the subconscious of the person on the other side. [33:37] Negotiating the agenda is one of the most important negotiations that does not occur. [36:23] You have to be more mindful about what you are trying to accomplish. [37:42] It is helpful to know what the person you are negotiating with cares about most. [40:01] We have to ask questions and learn as much as we can so that we can try to solve the right problems. [40:44] Assertiveness is taken differently depending on who you are. The way you frame something may be different depending on your gender. [42:37] We have to play in the world we live in, but we can be doing things on the side to try and change them in the future. [43:19] Melina shares her closing thoughts. [45:05] Melina’s first book, What Your Customer Wants and Can’t Tell You is officially on presale and available on Amazon, Bookshop, Barnes & Noble, Book Depository, and Booktopia. On today's episode of Loud & Clear, Walter Smolarek and John Kiriakou are joined by Brian Becker, who is in Hanoi covering the US-North Korean summit.Talks between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ended today with no agreement on any issue. Kim said that he would continue a moratorium on missile testing and development, but the fate of future negotiations remain very much in doubt. Can the peace process be put back on track? Thursday’s weekly series “Criminal Injustice” is about the most egregious conduct of our courts and prosecutors and how justice is denied to so many people in this country. Paul Wright, the founder and executive director of the Human Rights Defense Center and editor of Prison Legal News (PLN), and Kevin Gosztola, a writer for Shadowproof.com and co-host of the podcast Unauthorized Disclosure, join the show. Michael Cohen, President Trump’s longtime personal attorney and fixer, testified on Capitol Hill, saying that the President was a liar, a conman, and a racist, and that those around the President had traded their own integrity for proximity to power. Expectedly, the President exploded on Twitter, despite being busy with his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Cohen is due to report to prison on a myriad of felony charges in the next few weeks, which his opponents cite as reason to disbelieve his testimony. Walter and John speak with Dan Kovalik, a human rights and labor lawyer who is the author of the book “The Plot to Control the World: How the US Spent Billions to Change the Outcome of Elections Around the World.” President Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner is finishing up a visit through the Middle East to publicize an Israeli-Palestinian peace plan. Meanwhile, the United Nations released a report saying that “the commission found reasonable grounds to believe that … the use of live ammunition by Israeli security forces against demonstrators was unlawful.” Ariel Gold, a peace activist and the national co-director of Code Pink, joins the show. Veterans for Peace is Thursday’s regular segment about the contemporary issues of war and peace that affect veterans, their families, and the country as a whole. Gerry Condon, a Vietnam-era veteran and war resister who refused orders to deploy to Vietnam and lived in exile in Canada and Sweden for 6 years, organizing with other U.S. military deserters and draft resisters against the Vietnam war, and for amnesty for U.S. war resisters, joins the show. He has been a peace and solidarity activist for almost 50 years and has served on the Board of Veterans For Peace for the last 6 years, currently as national president. A regular Thursday segment deals with the ongoing militarization of space. As the US continues to withdraw from international arms treaties, will the weaponization and militarization of space bring the world closer to catastrophe? Brian and John speak with Prof. Karl Grossman, a full professor of journalism at the State University of New York, College at Old Westbury, the author of six books, and the host of a nationally-aired television program focused on environmental, energy, and space issues. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif resigned earlier this week just hours after meeting with an American peace delegation, apologizing for what he called his shortcomings. But President Hassan Rouhani refused the resignation, and Zarif was back in the office two days later. What was behind the resignation? Walter and John speak with Massoud Shadjareh, the founder of the Islamic Human Rights Commission.
