Here on The LDS Mission Podcast, Episode 245 – A Leadership Framework, we explore what Christlike leadership really looks like on the mission and in everyday life. In this episode, I share a simple but powerful framework that has been on my mind ever since a stake leadership training: identity before instruction, worth before correction, and belonging before belief. Whether you're a district leader, sister training leader, zone leader, trainer, missionary companion, returned missionary, or missionary mama, this leadership mindset will change the way you approach growth, correction, testimony building, and influence. We talk about how our "lower brain" reacts when we lead with instruction, correction, or pressure to believe before someone feels secure in their identity as a child of God. I break down how identity stabilizes a person, worth secures the heart, and belonging calms the brain so that real transformation can happen. Using examples from missionary life—training a greenie, working through obedience struggles, supporting homesick missionaries, helping RMs navigate awkward transitions—I show how this order creates emotional safety, deeper testimony, and lasting growth. If you want to lead like Jesus Christ—with love, calm confidence, compassion, and clarity—this episode will give you a practical leadership framework you can apply immediately in your companionship, district, ward, or home. Episode 245 – A Leadership Framework will help you anchor identity, restore worth, create belonging, and lead in a way that truly transforms hearts. As always, if you found this episode helpful, I want to invite you to subscribe if you aren't already, share this episode with your friends and missionaries you know, and write a review. I know this work will help LDS missionaries around the world and it would mean so much to me if you did. Until next week my friends. Send a textOver the past few weeks, we've talked a lot about leadership, culture, and what really holds a salon together when things get difficult. But in this episode, we want to step back and explain something we realized while rebuilding our salon.Culture is not your branding. It's not your vibe. And it's not what you write on the wall.Culture is how your business behaves. In this episode, we introduce a simple five-mode leadership framework that explains how culture is created in real life, through operations, systems, leadership, strategy, and crisis. We walk through what each mode actually looks like inside a salon, how your team experiences your culture in each one, and why most salon owners only recognize two modes: daily operations and emergencies. We also share what it looked like to relocate our entire team from our building to another salon, and why that experience revealed more about our culture than any mission statement ever could. If you've ever struggled to clearly define your salon's culture, this framework will help you understand what's really shaping it and how to lead it intentionally.Your business should serve you, so that you can serve others.KEY TAKEAWAYCulture is how your business behaves, not how you describe it.Clients experience culture primarily through daily operations.Strong systems reduce guessing and build confidence for your team.Leadership creates psychological safety and accountability.Strategy creates stability, credibility, and alignment.Crisis reveals culture faster than any other situation. Most owners only operate in operations and crisis mode.Leaders must learn to shift between different modes intentionally.Written systems prevent frustration and miscommunication.Knowing what “mode” you are in changes how you lead.TIME STAMPS00:00 – Quick rebuild update + why this episode exists 01:30 – Jen's opening take: reacting with clients and protecting experience 04:00 – Todd's opening take: perspective and responsibility 06:30 – Culture is not branding or “vibe” 08:30 – Removing your team from your space reveals real culture 10:30 – What other salons and clients noticed about your team 12:30 – What clients actually say defines your culture 15:00 – Why culture shows most clearly when things go wrong 17:30 – Introducing the Five-Mode framework 18:30 – Mode 1: Operations 21:30 – Mode 2: Systems 24:45 – Mode 3: Leadership 27:45 – Mode 4: Strategy 31:30 – Mode 5: Crisis 35:00 – How the flood activated every mode 38:00 – Identifying what mode you're actually in 41:00 – Using the framework to stop reacting and start leading 43:30 – Closing thoughts + next stepsLinks and Stuff:Our Newsletter Mentoring InquiriesFind more of our things:InstagramHello Hair Pro Website

Leadership development can take two distinct types: horizontal and vertical. Horizontal growth targets on adding new skills, knowledge, and competencies broadening what a leader can do. Vertical development, on the other hand, alters how a leader thinks, perceives, and responds. This enables leaders to handle complexity, stress, and uncertainty by increasing maturity, emotional regulation, and perspective. While horizontal development can make a leader more capable in the short term, vertical growth boosts their ability to inspire and create lasting value. However, to achieve sustainable leadership impact, understanding both is the key. Ryan Gottfredson is a leadership expert, author, and researcher specializing in vertical development and organizational psychology. He is the founder and owner of Ryan Gottfredson LLC. He helps organizations vertically develop their leaders primarily through focusing on mindsets. He is also a leadership professor at the College of Business and Economics at California State University-Fullerton. Ryan is the author of the USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestseller ‘Success Mindsets: The Key to Unlocking Greater Success in Your Life, Work, & Leadership'. He joined us today to talk about vertical development, which transforms leaders at their core. HIGHLIGHTS [02:25] Vertical development vs. horizontal development. [05:00] Maturity in vertical development. [07:19] Self-protection vs. value creation. [11:26] Developing metacognitive skills. [15:30] Jim Collins' Level 5 Leadership Framework. [23:12] Challenges of level 5 leadership. [27:13] The window of tolerance. [32:00] Managing stress at the moment. [35:50] Practical strategies to manage stress. KEY TAKEAWAYS Notice if your instinct under pressure is to protect yourself or create value. Resist the emotional comfort that can come at the expense of long-term innovation and growth. Even transformational leaders have flaws, accept imperfection. Prioritize value creation over self-protection. Recognize your current ‘window of tolerance' and notice what triggers you out of it. Manage stress proactively and avoid slipping into the self-protection mode. An AI leadership framework that balances innovation with responsibility is essential for 2025 success, as thought leader Faisal Hoque reveals the groundbreaking OPEN and CARE methodology that helps leaders navigate the complex hybrid world of human-AI collaboration. Bottom Line Up Front: Leaders must become multidisciplinary systems thinkers who can manage both human resources and digital agents simultaneously. The most effective AI leadership framework combines opportunity exploration (OPEN) with catastrophic risk prevention (CARE) to create sustainable AI business strategy that serves humanity while driving innovation. From Human Authenticity to Strategic Implementation: Part 2 of Our AI Leadership Series This is Part 2 of our exclusive two-part interview series with bestselling author and thought leader Faisal Hoque. In Part 1: "Women in Leadership AI: Preserving Human Authenticity While Harnessing Technology", we explored what makes us uniquely human, the importance of leadership authenticity, and how to protect your agency while leveraging AI tools. Now, in Part 2, we dive deep into the practical implementation side: How do you actually build an AI leadership framework that works? Faisal reveals his proprietary OPEN and CARE methodology—a systematic approach to AI governance framework that balances innovation with ethical responsibility. The Hybrid World Reality: Why Traditional Leadership No Longer Works The Death of Process-Performance-Structure Leadership The old leadership paradigm is obsolete. As Hoque explains, "When I started my career, we used to think very much about process performance and organizational structure. Those kind of started to fade away. And we started talking about emotional intelligence, mindfulness, and inspiration and influence." But even that evolution isn't enough for our current AI business strategy demands. Today's leaders face an unprecedented challenge: managing hybrid workforces that include both human employees and AI agents. What Hybrid Leadership Actually Means Most people think "hybrid" refers to remote versus office work. That's wrong. In the context of AI leadership framework development, hybrid means something far more complex: Three Types of Hybrid Leadership: Hybrid Markets: Your customers interact with both human representatives and AI agents (like Netflix's algorithm suggesting your next show) Hybrid Workforce: You manage both human resources and digital resources, working together and sometimes replacing each other Hybrid Leadership Decision-Making: As a leader, you're not just saying "Faisal is going to do this and Sabrina is going to do that"—you're also allocating: "My customer agent is going to do this, and my chatbot is going to do that" The New Leadership Requirements Modern leaders must be both emotionally intelligent AND systems thinkers. This used to be the job of IT or technology people, but that's no longer true. In today's AI governance framework, every leader at every level must understand how people and technology coexist. The CARE Framework: Your AI Ethics Framework for Risk Prevention Why Risk Planning Is Critical in AI Governance Framework Most leaders are not prepared for AI's potential negative consequences. They focus entirely on opportunity while ignoring catastrophic scenarios. The CARE framework forces leaders to think preventatively. CARE: The Four-Step Risk Methodology CARE is also an acronym that ensures responsible AI framework implementation: C - Catastrophize Scenarios Identify the most catastrophic outcomes possible from your AI implementation Consider impacts on employees, customers, and society Think beyond immediate business metrics A - Assess Impact Evaluate ripple effects across your ecosystem Consider job displacement consequences Analyze long-term societal implications R - Risk Mitigation Develop guardrails and governance structures
1st Annual Global Neurodivergent Leaders Summit 2025 This event spotlighted the brilliance of leaders who were once labeled as “disabled” simply because they think differently. These trailblazers—CEOs, Global speakers, Executive coaches, and Industry Titans from Banking, Real Estate, and the Global Sales and Marketing —have leveraged their ADHD, dyslexia, OCD, and other forms of neurodivergence as superpowers that set them apart. Let's celebrate and elevate those who are changing the world—not in spite of how they think, but because of it. Raymond Kemp Title: Navigating with a Different Compass (Leading with ADHD in a Neurotypical World) Summary: Leadership isn't reserved for those who think in straight lines. It's about clarity, self-command, and the courage to lead from exactly where you are. I want every leader in the room—whether neurodivergent or not—to walk away knowing that different doesn't mean deficient. When you understand your wiring and Own the Helm, your unique perspective becomes a competitive advantage, not a compromise. Kathy Marcino Title: Coaching Through Conflict: Learn Strategies for Identifying Conflict Types, Successfully Navigating Workplace Conflict, and Turning It into Positive Growth. Summary: “Disagreement holds the potential for deeper understanding.” When conflict is managed effectively, it can drive innovation and enhance team performance. In this session, Kathy Marcino walks leaders through a structured path for transforming disagreements into shared goals and solutions. Drawing from her extensive coaching experience, she equips participants with a framework to recognize early warning signs, stay grounded in difficult conversations, and co-create lasting resolutions that strengthen team dynamics and performance. Dan Dominguez Title: Embrace Your Neurodivergent Edge: How Self-Awareness Fuels Resilient Leadership Summary: When I first entered the military, I thought I had to be just like everyone else—follow the rules, fit in, and never let my differences show. But in the heat of tough missions, something clicked: the way my mind worked—my neurodivergent wiring—wasn't a liability. It was my edge. Later, in the world of sales, I saw the same truth again: those traits I once hid—my intense focus, my out-of-the-box thinking, my deep desire to help others—were exactly what helped me forge real connections and close deals. It took self-awareness to stop fighting those parts of myself and start using them as strengths. In this talk, I share that journey, along with a simple framework—Recognize, Accept, Celebrate—to help others stop hiding and start embracing their own neurodivergent edge. My story is a reminder: your greatest leadership potential lies not in fitting in, but in owning and celebrating who you really are. Paul McCarthy Title: Drowning out the voices we need to hear. Why F.I.R.E.D. leaders are your 'hidden gems' Summary: Two Options:Talk Summary 1 To survive disruption, organizations need leaders who possess disruptive leadership capabilities. So they hire them and then they fire them. Publicly, organizations say they want leaders to be innovative thinkers who challenge the status quo. Privately, conventional leadership culture wants nothing of the sort. Leaders with disruptive leadership capabilities often embody the very leadership qualities that organizations so desperately need to navigate disruption and adapt to the “new normal” of constant change, yet these leaders are being marginalized, ostracized, and even exorcised from today's organizations. We will need a different kind of leader for the future and our organizations are unprepared for how to identify, recruit, onboard, and develop this kind of leader. Join us for a radical, refreshing talk with Paul McCarthy, as openly talks about the untalkable, questions the unquestionable, and reframes perceptions about the leadership we desperately need for our times. Paul will share insights from his own experiences as a leader with disruptive leadership capabilities, as well as from his global research and first best-selling book into how individual leaders can be identified, cultivated, and embraced for being disruptive. He will also help us to understand how we can identify disruptive leadership capacity and capability. Talk Summary 2 Paul takes audiences on an exploratory journey to imagine a future where leaders who are currently perceived as 'not fitting in' or as 'bad culture fits' are the ones that organizations will increasingly need to thrive in a constantly changing environment. Yet these leaders are being marginalized, ostracized, and even exorcised from today's organizations. Using his own personal experiences, as well as research, case studies and outputs of interviews, Paul introduces the F.I.R.E.D. Leadership Framework and shows organizations why we need to embrace leaders who think differently. By helping reframe how organizations perceive their 'agitators', Paul shows how to cut through the noise to equip those organizations with the approach needed to create the next generation of leaders our world so desperately needs to successfully navigate ongoing disruption, continue to innovate and deliver transformative outcomes. Dr. Regeline “Gigi” Sabbat Title: “You Can Lead” ( Regardless if you are Neurodivergent you can lead. - Dr. Gigi Sabbat) Summary: Absolutely — being neurodivergent does not limit your ability to lead. In fact, many neurodivergent individuals bring exceptional strengths to leadership, such as: • Unique perspectives and creativity • High levels of focus and dedication • Empathy and emotional intelligence • Innovative problem-solving • Resilience and adaptability Leadership isn't about fitting a mold — it's about authenticity, vision, and the courage to empower others. Whether you're neurodivergent or not, your lived experiences can shape you into a powerful, impactful leader. Manny Piñiero Title: “Wired Differently - Neurodivergent Leadership and the Power of Intentional Time" Summary: Wired differently, I thrive in navigating complexity, identifying patterns others may overlook, and creating meaningful systems that honor both people and outcomes. My connection to time is not just about efficiency, it's about intentionality. I believe in making time count by aligning actions with purpose, fostering environments that empower teams to do the work that truly matters, while leading with clarity, empathy, and a deep respect for the diverse ways people think, work, and thrive. Holly White Title: Radical is Relative: Trusting Your Instincts Before the World Catches Up Summary: Some of the most powerful insights come from minds that don't follow conventional paths. In this talk, I explore how ADHD-related cognition—nonlinear, spontaneous, and deeply intuitive—often leads to ideas that feel radical to others but entirely natural to the thinker. We'll examine why these ideas meet resistance, how traits like discomfort with uncertainty affect their reception, and what it means to trust your instincts in a world that hasn't caught up yet. Whether you're the one generating paradigm-shifting ideas or the one receiving them, “trust the process” becomes more than a mantra—it's a model for creative courage, leadership, and cognitive integrity. Rosie Ward Title: Ditch the Head Trash! Upgrade Your Faulty Programming So You Can Maximize Your Impact Summary: Being human is messy. We are hardwired to be on high alert for threats, activating our biological hardwired instincts to self-protect and cling tightly to what is familiar. Yet our world demands that we are able to lean into discomfort and disruption. This creates a gap that keeps us stuck more than we realize. This session will normalize our shared human experience for why we get in our own way as a result of our 7 Faulty Programs and give you tangible tools to upgrade your own faulty programming so you can embrace your own sparkle and maximize your shine and impact around you. David Citron Title: Unleash Your ADHD Superpower in 4 Minutes a Day Summary: In this talk, David Citron, founder of Expressocoaching.com which serves ADHDers who lead organisations in 31 countries worldwide shares the 3 keys to unleashing your ADHD Superpower as a neurodivergent leader. This powerful methodology which has a 4.8* Trustpilot rating from thrilled leaders around the world can change the next 30 years of your life. One situation every leader needs to be ready for is when a crisis hits your organization. Unfortunately, most leaders are ill-prepared and lack proper experience to know how to best address a crisis in such a way that allows the organization to pivot while still staying true to their long-term goals.Fortunately, my guest in this episode of Leadership Biz Cafe has developed a pragmatic leadership model that leaders can employ to not only ride out the storm, but come out stronger on the other side.Eric McNulty is the Associate Director of the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative at Harvard University, and Instructor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He also teaches graduate-level courses on leadership, negotiation, and conflict resolution at Harvard, as well as several executive education programs at MIT and Harvard.Eric joins me in this episode to talk about his latest book “You're It: Crisis, Change, and How to Lead When It Matters Most” and the research-based, leadership framework that can not only help leaders be better prepared for any future crisis, but develop a mindset to transform crisis situations into opportunities to evolve and grow your organization. Being a leader is very hard. Managers need to navigate the constantly changing business context with new strategic directives, employee turnover, new technology, etc. Outdated one-size-fits-all approaches to leading, irrespective of the team members' background, group dynamic, and leaders' personal needs and preferences. Conflicting priorities of different stakeholder groups that have to be juggled and combined without any adverse effects on the team's productivity. And as a cherry on the cake, the classical lack of time for leader's important, yet not urgent tasks. I developed a simple framework and self-assessment that has been helping my clients and workshop participants to get out of overwhelm for over 3 years now. We break the complex leadership role into three dimensions and examine each of them. You quickly see the patterns - what are your strengths that you are ignoring but can leverage even more instead; which areas actually stress you out, and how can you put intentional effort into improving those. Your imperative, as a leader, is to understand which of the things your people do genuinely create value, and which things simply generate activity for its own sake. If you can manage to align the work that creates the most value for your company, with the things that benefit your people individually, you will absolutely turbo-charge your team's performance! This episode dives into the world of value, outlining the key principles of value delivery, describing what a value-driven culture looks like, and exposing some of the common organizational barriers to value creation.Download the FREE PDF that accompanies this episode at www.yourceomentor.com/episode261 ————————Doors for Leadership Beyond the Theory September 2023 are NOW OPEN! I want to do something that is genuine.""There are only so many seats available for formal development programs. In this episode of The Great Leadership Podcast with Jacob Morgan, I spoke with Stewart Friedman - a well-known leadership expert who spent time at Ford Motor Company leading a 50-person team focused on leadership development, transforming the culture, and training 2,500 managers per year. In today's episode, Friedman emphasizes the importance of finding mutual value in four domains: work, home, community, and self, and argues that leadership impacts all of them, requiring change in all areas. He also stresses the importance of vulnerability in leadership. According to his research, there is no such thing as work-life balance, instead, integration is the key. He has explored the impact of the pandemic on this integration and found that holistic career values have an indirect effect on work engagement. Stewart encourages people to make tough choices under pressure, integrate work and life, pay attention to signs, and make the best career decisions. _____________________ Get ad-free listening, early access to new episodes and bonus episodes with the subscription version of the show The Great Leadership with Jacob Morgan Plus.
