Former U.S. Poet Laureate and musician Joy Harjo (Mvskoke) immerses listeners in a diverse array of jazz styles and deeply emotional poetry in her new album, “Insomnia and Seven Steps to Grace”. Co-produced by Grammy-winning artist Esperanza Spalding, the album features originals and covers, including a re-interpretation of Charles Mingus’s “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat”. Harjo also transforms her 2015 poem, “I Pray for My Enemies”, into a feverish, free-form composition, while “Rabbit Is Up to Tricks” draws on the power of traditional oral storytelling and “Stomp All Night” delivers a fun and funk-filled jam. Acclaimed jazz vocalist Julia Keefe (Nez Perce) and the 16-piece ensemble of talented Native musicians known as the Indigenous Big Band make their album debut with “Incarnadine”. The album honors Native jazz pioneers like Mildred Bailey (Coeur d’Alene) and Jim Pepper (Kaw/Muscogee), as well as featuring innovative originals like “Wawasint8Da” and “Ddat Suite, MVT. 3 Iron Horse Gallup”. The ensemble continues to earn critical praise especially for their live performances, highlighted by their 2024 spring residency at the Kennedy Center. We’ll speak with both Joy Harjo and Julia Keefe about their new albums in this episode of Native Playlist, our regular feature on Indigenous music.

Both Rebecca and Ron are accomplished musicians and composers, involved with many musical projects from Broadway to Big Band and more. Ron’s Covid story is powerful, and one of millions. People continue to contract the disease. A beszélgetés háziasszonya: Náray Erika

John Goldsby returns to the podcast to celebrate Big Band Bass, a project that spotlights the double bass at the front of the band alongside the legendary WDR Big Band and arranger/conductor Bob Mintzer. We talk about what it felt like to close a 30-year run in one of the world's rare full-time jazz ensemble jobs, and how stepping away has opened up space for hand-picked gigs, home projects, and new recordings. We dig into the album's origin story—why Vince Mendoza's "Sonatinita" is the lone non-Goldsby composition, how Bob Mintzer turned John's "little ditties" into full-blown big band architecture, and what it's like hearing your writing amplified by master arrangers. We also get nerdy (in the best way) about gear and sound: Spirocore light gauge vs. Gerald Genssler's silk-core strings, recording with a Schoeps MK 41, using a Fishman Full Circle onstage, and the realities of earplugs and in-ears in a loud big band environment. Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise - Тихо, как на утреннем восходе солнца и Devil May Care - Безразличие.

By 15 he was writing music and playing professionally. A degree in music led to playing music on cruise ships. In today's meander Ed tells us about his journey through music and life. Since he immigrated to Canada in 2011, he's made his way in the jazz music scene in Ottawa and the country at large. Ed leads The Prime Rib Big Band, and feels as much business person as musician. “I get all of that entrepreneurial side from my mom. She's a shark.” His philosophy of “don't ask don't get” has helped him build a jazz music career in our capital city, and he shares a few wee stories about how that unfolded. We talk about the Ottawa music scene, and the value of being a big fish in a small pond. It's hard to be so far from family, and we talk about how he stays connected with them from across the pond. We also explore what to do with mementos of our careers, and the value of celebrating our successes. We have a lovely meander; it's so much fun! I hope you enjoy this too.All comments welcome. Born in Bar Harbor, Maine, Jude Johnstone began writing songs at about age 8. At 18, she was "discovered" by Bruce Springsteen's saxophonist, Clarence Clemons. After spending some time in New York and New Jersey under his wing, in 1979, she moved to Los Angeles, where her songs quickly became sought after by other artists. She has been covered by Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Bette Midler, Johnny Cash, Stevie Nicks, Mary Black, Jennifer Warnes, Trisha Yearwood and more, including a #1 song for Yearwood's debut album called "The Woman Before Me" which earned her a BMI award. Her songs then appeared on 8 other Yearwood cds. She also penned the title track to Johnny Cash's 1997 Grammy winning album "Unchained." Jude has released 9 cds of her own that run the gamut from Celtic, Gospel, Americana, to Jazz, Blues, and even Big Band. She has been featured on the CBS Early Show, and NPR Radio's "Morning Edition." Her songs have also been on several television shows including "Nurse Jackie", "Army Wives" and "Lie To Me."Jude has opened shows for Jackson Browne, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Richard Thompson, Shawn Colvin, Chris Hillman, 10,000 Maniacs, David Crosby and many others and toured Europe under her own name numerous times. "If Jude Johnstone is not yet a musical household name, she sure as hell should be." Henry Carrigan, No Depression"Turning emotional pain into art is a tricky business.Sometimes I wonder if the end result is worth it.Jude Johnstone makes a good case that it is."Rodney Crowell"Jude's fertility, in regards to songwriting, is truly awe inspiring." We welcome actress/singer Tina Cole for a candid and captivating conversation that traces a remarkable life in show business, filled with achievements, close calls, and shocking Hollywood stories.Tina shares her deep entertainment roots that run through The King Family and Big Band history. Her mom is King Sister Yvonne and her dad is keyboard icon Buddy Cole. She and her cousins absorbed their craft playing under the piano as their parents rehearsed. She performed with The King Family on all of their TV shows and specials and she is one of the Four King Cousins. At just fourteen years old, Tina was asked to screen test opposite Gary Cooper. By age 19, she was co-starring in Hawaiian Eye with Troy Donahue and Robert Conrad!Tina speaks frankly about the perils of navigating Hollywood as a young woman. She was hit on by studio heads, co-stars, The Beatles, Troy Donahue and her Bill Cosby near-miss is truly unsettling. Her safety secret? She doesn't drink. Does the previous paragraph really mention The Beatles!? Yes, Tina was hand picked by them to attend an exclusive Bel-Air “party.” Population: Hundreds of pretty girls and The Beatles. Tina laughed off advances from John, Ringo and George as a security guard who knew her family stuck by her side. Parades of women went in and out of rooms, often emerging in tears when their encounter did not appear to be leading to love and marriage. Paul had eyes only for his one date. Perhaps it was Linda.Did you know that Tina had previously guest starred on My Three Sons three times before landing the role of Katie Miller Douglas. The producers auditioned almost every young actress in Hollywood without finding that perfect girl. Desperate, they started looking through previous seasons, found Tina, called her in and as soon as Free MacMurray and his wife signed off on her, she had the role. And we learn that when it comes to winning the heart of Tina Cole, Don Grady has more game than The Beatles. Yes, Robbie and Katie were a real-life couple! Although, for various reasons, star-crossed, their forever together remains in their hearts.Of course we bring you an IMDB Roulette that turns into a thrill ride through classic Hollywood, plus My Three Sons trivia, Tina's spooky ghost story from a house in Sherman Oaks, which has a warm ending, and, as a perfect full-circle moment, she closes by describing the distinct, individual personalities of the legendary King Sisters. In current media --Weezy: HBO series, Heated RivalryFritz: Netflix documentary film, Cover-UpPath Points of Interest:My Three Lives by Tina ColeTina Cole on WikipediaTina Cole on IMDBTina Cole on FacebookHeated RivalryCover-Up - Netflix

Cam takes us behind the scenes with the legendary singing group, and then Cam, a talented voice actor goes is and out of famous roles as we 'interview' some of his most beloved V.O. characters!Cam is the son of Alyce King, one of the original King Sisters, whose harmonies launched in the early 1930s and eventually grew into a multi-generational act that included children, grandchildren, cousins, and extended family, all uniting in song and populating iconic ABC series and specials throughout the 1960s. Cam walks us through the group's vaudeville roots, and their early days singing on the radio, all beginning on a Christmas morning where Cam's Mom, Aunts and Uncles each received a musical instrument and instructions from their music teacher Dad. His goal was to build a family band. He created a dynasty. We explore how The King Family evolved and rebranded across decades: From a Big Band vocal group in the 40's to jazz harmonies and the 50's blonde Hollywood glam look, to the TV friendly family ensemble of the 60s and 70s.Cam shares inside stories about how costumes were passed down from one child to the next and how King Sisters, King Kiddies, and King Cousins all fit into the ever-growing and evolving act.We also discuss Now They're All Here, Cam's large and glorious coffee table book on the King Family, inspired by George Plimpton's oral biography of Truman Capote, and written in the first person voices of King Family members over the past 100 years. And Cam speaks candidly about his own sexual orientation, sharing how he came out to his entire family at a typical family meal, as the conversation and the timing felt right. His truth was completely accepted.Plus, Jamie Alcroft, who will hold a position of honor on the non profit One Legacy Tournament of Roses Parade float on New Year's Day, joins us to talk about his important work with the LAFF4LIFE program and his experience as an organ transplant recipient! In current media --Weezy: Simon Cowell: The Next Act on NetflixFritz: The movie F1, streaming on Apple TV+Path Points of Interest:Cam ClarkeNow They're All Here: The King Family by Cam ClarkeCam Clarke on WikipediaCam Clarke on IMDBCam Clarke on InstagramThe King Family on WikipediaDonate LifeOne LegacySimon Cowell: The Next ActF1 on Apple TV

Could this be peak Frank? Sinatra at the Sands captures the energy, the cool, and the incredible voice that made this crooner so iconic. Backed by the Count Basie Orchestra with arrangements by a young Quincy Jones, this live album still swings 60 years later!Sinatra at the Sands was recorded at a moment when Sinatra was emerging from a slump. Rock and roll dominated the airwaves, the Beatles were redefining popular music and crooning just wasn't cool anymore. But this album, recorded live in Vegas, shows a 50-year-old Frank sounding loose, confident, and completely at home in front of a band that swings like nothing else.
