After Adam tells of his travails in the Texas winter storm and ensuing power outages, the Munchie Boys get down to business, reckoning with the ghost of series past while persevering through an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit featuring a robot child mimicking human emotion stuck in the strangest of custody battles in “Stolen” (S3E3). While dealing with a bonafide Cragenisode courtesy of his former partner Max Greevey's cold case getting tossed in the microwave, Adam and Josh also dive into post-9/11 SVU credits, do some height detective work, walk the Appalachian Trail with Mark Sanford, and unearth a fictional Juris Doctor degree. Staten Island is often called the forgotten borough of New York City, but its long history of spooky legends and odd folklore has not been forgotten by its residents. Richmond County has a rich tradition of ghost stories, haunted places, urban legends, UFO flaps, and even some Bigfoot sightings. But in this episode, I'm looking at a few of the more obscure tales from the borough of parks. First up is the Black Dog of Bulls Head, a spectral black beast the size of a horse with glowing red eyes that terrorized colonists at the Bulls Head Tavern long before the American Revolution, along with an enigmatic gentleman with glowing eyes, hooved feet, and a tail. Our next stop is the Rose and Crown Tavern of New Dorp, a popular gathering place for British Troops during the Revolutionary War, where they first read the Declaration of Independence, had bloody clashes with American patriots, planned the Battle of Brooklyn, and which was later claimed to be haunted. Finally is the tragedy of the Staten Island Ferry Disaster, in which a ferry boat carrying people to lower Manhattan was attacked by a mysterious creature with monstrous tentacles before being dragged down to the depths of New York Harbor. Rumours spread that this was no ordinary murder, but a ritual killing rooted in old English witchcraft. In this episode, I investigate the chilling case now known as the Pitchfork Witch Murder: the killing of Charles Walton in the Warwickshire village of Lower Quinton. I'll explore the original police files, local folklore about the "Black Dog" of Meon Hill, and the theories that have surrounded this case for decades – from witchcraft, ancient stone circles to occult sacrifice. We'll also look at the role of the famous detective “Fabian of the Yard”, and ask why this brutal crime remains officially unsolved. For more on Peter Laws check out:www.patreon.com/peterlawsor www.peterlaws.co.uk

In this episode of Americana Podcast: The 51st State, host Robert Earl Keen sits down with one of the most quietly influential voices in American songwriting: James McMurtry. For decades, McMurtry has carved out a singular space where songs are more than melodies. His writing is built on gritty character studies, moral landscapes, and moments of hard-won clarity—stories that feel lived in, observed, and unafraid to sit with complexity. From the early days of his debut album Too Long in the Wasteland to the lived-in wisdom of his most recent work, his catalog reads like a map of roads traveled and lives encountered along the way.Born in Fort Worth, Texas, McMurtry spent much of his youth in Northern Virginia before finding his footing as a songwriter in Tucson, Arizona, studying English and Spanish while cutting his teeth in small rooms and local venues. After time spent traveling—including a period living in Alaska—he returned to Texas, working odd jobs, playing bars and open mics, and gradually forging a life as a working songwriter. For much of his adult life, he's been based in Lockhart, just south of Austin, though his music has carried far beyond those borders. In this conversation, Robert and James reflect on the long arc of a songwriting life—from early guitar lessons and teenage gigs to his first record, Too Long in the Wasteland, and through to his latest album, The Black Dog and the Wandering Boy. Along the way, they talk about craft, observation, patience, and what it means to tell the truth in song without flinching. It's an intimate, thoughtful look at an artist whose work doesn't chase trends or spotlight—but endures, quietly and honestly, exactly where it belongs.Listen to the full episode on all streaming platforms or at AmericanaPodcast.com.Like, share, and subscribe to Americana Podcast. Have an amazing Christmas everyone, if you celebrate, and thank you so much for all of your support!! In the winter of 1596, famine and desperation turn London's Newgate Prison into a place of cannibalism and despair. What follows is a chilling legend of a spectral black dog that stalks the guilty through cells, streets, and snow-covered alleys, raising the question of whether the monster was supernatural, or born from human cruelty itself. The BOOKBY US A COFFEEJoin Sarah's new FACEBOOK GROUPSubscribe to our PATREONEMAIL us your storiesJoin us on INSTAGRAMJoin us on TWITTERJoin us on FACEBOOKVisit our WEBSITEResearch Links:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Dog_of_Newgatehttps://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofEngland/Newgate-Prison/https://londonist.com/2014/11/the-black-dog-of-newgatehttps://factschology.com/factschology-articles-podcast/black-dog-of-newgate-prison-londonhttps://www.spookyisles.com/black-dog-of-newgate/https://blackcablondon.net/2017/01/22/the-black-dog-of-newgate/Thanks so much for listening, and we'll catch up with you again on Christmas Day!!Sarah and Tobie xx"Spacial Winds," Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licenced under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licencehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/SURVEY Hosted on Acast. Ruth Roper Wylde's databases have been mentioned on our previous converstations over the years, but we've never discussed some of the trends, facts and peculiarities of the date Ruth has collated.  In the Paranormal community, certain cliches, tropes and bad information often gets trotted out. Nobody sees modern ghosts, all Black Dog encounters are frightening, nobody sees the Fae anymore and so on. We dive in to some of these and find out that there is a lot more to the data than badly researched tropes and those who use them suggest. Some hauntings never stay inside the walls they began in. This story follows a girl raised in the shadows of New Orleans — a place where the ground itself breathes history and the dead are never truly gone. Her childhood home wasn't just unstable because of the violent man who lived there; it was alive with something older, something watching. It started with whispered voices calling her name, objects moving when no one was near, and the unmistakable feeling of being studied. But the night she saw a shimmering man in the hallway — a figure that sprinted through the air and vanished straight into a closet door — she realized this wasn't imagination. This was a real haunting. This isn't just a ghost story. A wet dog smell with no dog. A food bowl scraping the ground after it's been packed away. A bed dipping to make space for four familiar paws. Our Halloween special dives into the most compelling Reddit stories about ghost dogs—some tender, some chilling, all unforgettable—and asks what these moments might mean for people who loved a pet and had to let go.We start with a skeptic's tale that ties rain, timing, and a suitcase full of mysteriously soaked clothes to a beloved spaniel who “found” her human and led him home. From there, we share a series of intimate accounts: a dream that delivered a goodbye before the phone rang, a late-night closet disturbance that left someone frozen in a trance, and the eerie comfort of a guardian dog who reappears to lick tears and calm a shaken child. We also step onto the trail of the Black Dog of Hanging Hills in Connecticut, exploring how folklore, shared perception, and the outdoors amplify the uncanny. As trainers and dog people, we balance belief with behavioral insight. Why do dogs stare at corners, growl down stairwells, or bark past your shoulder as if someone's standing behind you? We talk sensory triggers, patterns, and grief's imprints—while acknowledging that some events resist neat explanations. You'll hear practical Halloween safety reminders for living pups too: crate or tether at the door, manage greetings, keep chocolate and wrappers out of reach, and update IDs.If you've ever felt a familiar weight settle at your feet or heard tags jingle in an empty hall, you'll feel seen here. Press play for a thoughtful blend of folklore, training perspective, and heart. Then tell us your story—subscribe, share with a friend who loves dogs, and leave a review with your take: comforting visitation or just a very good ghost?Visit us on the website here to see what we've got going on and how you can join our pack of good dogs and owners.

Yet this same man led England to victory in World War II and became an international hero. In this episode, we explore how Churchill's personal battles with his own "dark forces" gave him the deep understanding of human struggle that allowed him to inspire an entire nation. Discover why his famous words "never give in, never, never, never" weren't just political rhetoric, but hard-won wisdom from someone who learned to overcome his own overwhelming internal enemies first.

Darkness Radio Presents: Wicked Strange: Your Guide to Ghosts, Monsters. Oddities, & Urban Legends from New England with Researcher/Podcast Host/ Author, Jeff Belanger! Wicked Strange is a journey and a celebration of all the things that make New England like no other place on earth. In a time when so much of the world is becoming homogenized—as big-box stores and chain restaurants move in and so many communities lose their identity—we still have these legends. They belong to specific towns and streets. These are stories locals will share with you . . . if they trust you.  This travel guide takes readers on a journey to the strange and frequently unseen world that is often right under their noses. Covering numerous haunted places, environs where mysterious creatures have been spotted, areas where unusual events have happened, eccentric locals, and roadside oddities to explore, noted expert of the strange Jeff Belanger is your guide to all that's local and strange. Haunted locations from all over New England are covered New England is full of monsters and devils that lurk in the woods, lakes, and seas. Explored are some of the best known and most obscure, including Lake Champlain's Champ; the Cumberland Vampire of Rhode Island; Gloucester's Sea Serpent; the Black Dog of West Peak in Meriden, Connecticut; and the Flying Moose of Maine. Also covered are unusual events, such as UFO sightings (Connecticut's UFO crash at Bantam Lake / Betty and Barney Hill's UFO experience), and roadside oddities, such as the World's Tallest Filing Cabinet (Burlington, VT), Boston's Big Steaming Tea Kettle, and the literal Fork in the Road of Westport, MA.  Wicked Strange takes you off the beaten path, revealing a hidden world right under your nose. Jeff joins Darkness Radio today to tell us a few of the terrific tales that lie behind the six states of New England!
