The true story of the corrupt and violent town of Borger, Texas in 1927―and the legendary Texas Ranger tasked with taming it.Just a year after the town of Borger, Texas was founded, the press called it "the wickedest in the state" for good reason. The town, sprung into existence overnight to support the oilfields, was a second chance for many residents but had also become a lawless haven for bootleggers, pimps and gamblers, run by a crooked city hall. That environment attracts some of the most unsavory characters in prohibition America, including a gang of murderous bank robbers who head into Borger to spend their money on booze, gambling and prostitutes. In the span of weeks, the gang kills three law enforcement officers, bringing the worst heat imaginable: legendary Texas Ranger Captain Frank Hamer, years before he will lead the 1934 posse that tracked down and killed criminals Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. "Under the watchful eyes of Bob's Stratos and Apollo..."This week Elton is asking the big questions: What do you do when the world ends, not with a bang, but with a sudden, awkward silence? In this special crossover event, Elton is joined by the one and only Glen Nuzzle from the Nuzzle House podcast to unpack Jonathan Lethem's post-technological fever dream, The Arrest.Imagine the "Off" switch for the entire world was flipped. No internet, no cars, no planes—just a sudden, quiet return to a pastoral life. This is the world of Sandy “Journeyman” Duplessis, a former Hollywood script doctor now living a humble life in rural Maine, delivering organic rutabagas and trying to forget his past. But the past has a way of showing up in a nuclear-powered, drill-nosed super-machine.When Sandy's old frenemy, the legendary (and legendarily ego-maniacal) producer Peter Todbaum, rolls into town in the "Blue Streak," he brings more than just forbidden technology—he brings the toxic baggage of Hollywood storytelling to a world that was finally learning to live without it.The Ultimate Rivalry: We dive into the petty, hilarious tension between a man who just wants to garden and a man who refuses to stop being the protagonist.Post-Apocalypse... with Vibes: Is it a dystopia, or just a really long camping trip? Lethem flips the script on traditional "end of the world" tropes.A "Nuzzle" Worthy Discussion: Glen Nuzzle brings his signature style to the table, helping Elton navigate the surreal landscapes and meta-commentary that only Lethem can provide."It's a story about the stories we tell ourselves to survive, and what happens when those stories are delivered by a man in a giant metal mole-car."Whether you're a fan of high-concept literary sci-fi or you just enjoy hearing two guys talk about the absurdity of a nuclear-powered drill in a potato field, this episode is for you.GET THE BOOK: From AmazonFrom an Indie Book SellerBECOME AN Elton Reads A Book A Week CONTRIBUTOR HERE:Elton Reads A Book A Week PatreonTips!SOCIAL MEDIA! This is the LINK TREE!Join the Discord server!EMAIL: eltonreadsabookaweek@gmail.comThe following section is reserved for the people, places, things, and more that Elton probably offended in this episode--THE APOLOGIES SECTION: Clowns...again, flatulence, New York...again, those that get easily tricked, Penthouse Forum, and much, much more.A special thanks to Diedrich Bader and Jenna Fischer for all their inspiration.

We continue to drive down deeper into our real-time worldbuilding experiment armed with the comments of our listeners. One of the best things you can build for your campaign to feel real and immersive is by creating factions. Groups and organizations that have their own motives and goals that are distinct from the players. This creates inciting incidents, backstory fodder, and moving parts that conflict with the characters and create impetus for adventure. In this episode, Tony, Chris, and Dave finally begin discussing the biggest faction, and the inciting incident for the Boomtown setting, the shadowy conglomerate from the east coast of the world that is the driving force behind gathering the newly discovered ancient magical technology. Make sure to Join the Conversation!4:05 We begin with some possible ways this conglomerate might be formed and their motives. 6:45 It's important to create the floor for the overall campaign setting.10:00 The concept of the theocracy of the “Divine State” begins to take shape.12:35 The main fulcrum of your campaign setting. DM Dave posits the struggle between religion and faith.17:50 The beginning of the idea of the conglomerate as a “Triumvirate”: Religion, Commerce, and Military.21:24 The need for a break in time in history: The Cataclysm, The Calamity, The Doom of Valyria, etc.23:50 The internal struggles of the Triumvirate create more adventure hooks.25:10 Factions that develop because of opposition to the Triumvirate.35:45 Answering who these other factions are changes the campaign setting: Technological Magic vs Inherent Magic and Power.40:25 The Triumvirate is human-centric. Boomtowns are plural societies.6:35 Final Thoughts.

“It's important that my perspective stays flexible because my perspective could need updating, it could need to be changed based on new information.” — Nic StoneNic Stone isn't interested in staying in her lane. A #1 New York Times bestselling author, her young adult novels—Dear Martin, Chaos Theory, and Clean Getaway—explore nuances of racism, power, and mental illness with clarity and compassion. Now, she's stepping into uncharted territory with Boom Town, her first adult novel. Set in a legendary Atlanta strip club, it's a story about women, survival, and social power, and is a reflection of Nic's own creative evolution. In this Second Chapter conversation, Expanding Woman: Nic Stone on Forgiveness and the Freedom to Change, Nic returns to the podcast and gets real about what it means to grow louder, freer, and to become more yourself. Welcome back to the 80s! GenXers may remember decades ago when you flipped your wall calendar from December 1979 to January 1980. The 80s were officially here, and with it a decade of new music…well, sort of. Episode 37 celebrates this time with “Not Quite the 80s” featuring songs that were released in the second half of 1979, but today we think of them as 80s music.A shout out to those of you who have been with us since the beginning and welcome to our new listeners. As always, thanks to the people who helped us put this together: Alan (for all our artwork), DJ Phil B (for the technical stuff) and David Baerwald and David Ricketts, also known as David + David, for their amazing album which inspired the title of our podcast. Please tell all your friends about us and follow this page so you know when new podcasts are available. You can also follow us on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, and X.Songs chosen by both of us. For the first of two tales, Dan takes us to the old mining city of Ballarat , Australia, to explore reports of hauntings from the 19th century, and some even stranger reports of some ghost hoaxers. Such an entertaining story! Then,  a supposedly true modern encounter tale of someone who might give you something new to worry about. When you think of deceased relatives and other spirits always being near and watching over you, do you ever wonder how much of your life they actually see? Lynze offers us three tales this week. Her first is not that scary but a super fun mystery that has paranormal elements. Then, a big sister encourages her younger sister to make friends with the person in the mirror. What could go wrong? Lastly, a creepy tale of something in the basement of a rental house. LIVE EXPERIENCES: If you'd like to see us perform live this year, visit badmagicproductions.com for our annual summer camp or crimewaveatsea.com/scared for a spoopy cruise this fall! Thank you for continuing to send in your stories, Creeps and Peepers! Please keep doing so!!Send them to mystory@scaredtodeathpodcast.comSend everything else to info@scaredtodeathpodcast.comWant to be a Patron?
