In episode 230 of The Business Development Podcast, Kelly Kennedy is joined by Aaron Hurst, bestselling author of The Purpose Economy and a pioneer in the field of meaningful work. Together, they explore the idea that purpose isn't something we find, but something we intentionally build. Aaron dives deep into his journey—from founding Taproot Foundation and catalyzing a $15 billion pro bono movement to launching Board.Dev, an initiative aiming to integrate tech leaders into nonprofit boards. The conversation tackles the psychological underpinnings of purpose, the flaws in waiting for it to “find us,” and why reflection, not perfection, is the true path to fulfillment.Throughout the episode, Aaron challenges assumptions around career paths, generational mindsets, and community disconnect. He and Kelly explore how our modern culture often isolates us, despite unprecedented digital connection, and why genuine human relationships are the foundation for both business success and a meaningful life. The episode wraps with a powerful call to action—get to know your neighbors, build community intentionally, and remember that the smallest actions, like sharing a meal, can transform your sense of purpose.Key Takeaways: 1. Purpose isn't something you find—it's something you build through reflection and intentional action. 2. Most people don't need to change jobs to find purpose, they need to learn how to create meaning in what they already do. 3. Meaningful work is rooted in relationships, impact, and personal growth, not titles or salaries. 4. We're not in the information economy anymore—we've shifted into the purpose economy, where emotional connection drives value. 5. Entrepreneurs are often driven by addiction to highs and rewards, making balance and mindfulness essential for long-term well-being. 6. The idea of a “calling” can be limiting—purpose should be flexible and show up across all areas of your life. 7. Pro bono work fuels fulfillment by combining service, skill development, and new relationships in powerful ways. 8. Most nonprofits drastically underinvest in technology, and tech professionals on boards can help close this gap. 9. Our hyperconnected world has created a loneliness epidemic—real community must be rebuilt through local, intentional relationships. 10. A purposeful life starts at home—invite your neighbors over, open your door, and lead the change you want to see.Learn more about Aaron HurstBusiness Development isn't luck. Loneliness and disconnection reached epidemic levels the last few years, according to former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy. What if a potential cure was growing in our community? Enter the US Chamber of Connections, headquartered right here in Seattle. Jon and Chamber of Connection founder and CEO Aaron Hurst talk about what led to the launch of this organization; the Seattle Freeze; the foundational elements of a strong social life; the Chamber's Seattle Welcome Days; six types of connection and more. Join us for Seattle City Makers with Jon Scholes and guest Aaron Hurst.
Aaron Hurst and Katie Mooney discussed the US Chamber of Connection, a national initiative focused on building infrastructure to address the growing crisis of disconnection and distrust in society. This organization emphasizes that connection is not merely a social nicety, but a fundamental human need with significant implications for individual health, community well-being, and economic prosperity. The Chamber of Connection is currently piloting a program in Seattle to support new residents in building strong social bonds during their first year in the city. Three Key Takeaways ●The decline in connection is a major societal issue that is harming individuals, communities, organizations, and the country as a whole. *26 million American adults report having no friends. *44 million American adults are experiencing significant loneliness. *Loneliness is as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. *United States ranks LAST among 24 countries in the percentage of people who feel connected. ●Connection is not just a "nice to have," but an economic imperative. Lonely employees are less productive and more expensive, while socially connected people contribute to the economy and are better brand ambassadors. Loneliness contributes an estimated $466 per person to our annual healthcare costs. Loneliness costs employers $4,200 per employee due to drops in productivity. ●The six points of connection provide a framework for understanding and building healthy social connections: neighbor for emergency contact, a community with shared identity, two meaningful interactions per week, a third place for casual interactions, a community around a shared interest, and service to others. Three Steps to Take Action 1)Assess your own level of connection based on the six points. Identify areas where you can improve and take intentional steps to strengthen your connections. 2)Become a "Welcome Committee Ambassador." Look for newcomers in your community and encourage them to get involved in the Chamber of Connection's programs. You can also become a welcome facilitator or neighborhood lead with the US Chamber of Connection. 3.)Spread the word and change the conversation. Talk to others about the importance of connection and help them realize that it is a critical issue. Help build the political will to create change. www.ikigaistories.com

Why so many people work “bullshit jobs,” with James Suzman Up next ►► How to find a meaningful job, or find purpose in the job you already have | Aaron Hurst • How to find a meaningful job, or find... Our society is fixated on working. Some of us work 80 hours per week at jobs that don't fulfill us simply for work's sake. Expert anthropologists, such as James Suzman, even go as far as to say that many of the jobs we work could be considered "bullshit jobs" - a complex job that is not entirely needed in the workforce. These jobs are created and executed because our culture, and lifestyle, are organized around the 8-hour workday. So why do we work "bullshit jobs?" Many economists would say it is to fix the problem of scarcity. But what many do not know is that in our society, we passed the scarcity threshold in 1980, and most everyone has their basic needs met. So much so that more food goes into our landfills than goes into our stomachs. If scarcity is no longer an issue, why are we still working over 40 hours per week? It's because people have a humane instinct to work and be productive. If the 40-hour workweek is no longer serving our society, could we be approaching a new economic utopia? Suzman thinks so. In the present day, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, many workers are turning away from unfulfilling jobs and diving headfirst into their hobbies - cooking, writing, painting, and creating. If we keep on this path, our entire economic system is bound to change, making for a richer world where everyone does the work they want to be doing. ---------------- About James Suzman: James Suzman, Phd is an anthropologist specializing in the Khoisan peoples of southern Africa. A former Smuts Fellow in African Studies at the University of Cambridge, he is now the director of Anthropos Ltd., a think tank that applies anthropological methods to solving contemporary social and economic problems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Go Deeper with Big Think:- ►Become a Big Think Member Get exclusive access to full interviews, early access to new releases, Big Think merch and more ►Get Big Think+ for Business Guide, inspire and accelerate leaders at all levels of your company with the biggest minds in business ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learn more about your ad choices. Aaron Hurst is the best-selling author of The Purpose Economy and founder of the workforce engagement platform Imperative and nonprofit Taproot Foundation. Learn about the power of purpose, how to build a culture of meaning, and the next step in his social impact legacy, Shared Purpose, retreats and dinners for friends, couples, and colleagues to clarify their purpose and vision for the next chapter in their lives. About Aaron Aaron Hurst is an award-winning social entrepreneur who uses curiosity, creativity, courage, and care to navigate the world with purpose. He founded the Taproot Foundation, Imperative, Board.dev, and Shared Purpose. More importantly, he is a husband, father, and friend. In 2013, co-founded and led Imperative, a venture-backed start-up, that developed the first employee purpose profiling technology that has enabled hundreds of thousands of people to discover and own their purpose at work. In 2020, he re-launched the company, creating the first enterprise peer coaching platform which has become a critical way to connect and develop employees in the hybrid workplace. In 2001, he founded the Taproot Foundation, where he catalyzed the $15 billion pro bono service market in the US and helped establish markets in over 30 countries. The nonprofit was one of the pioneers in building cross-sector partnerships and helped accelerate the growth of corporate social responsibility. Aaron's best-selling 2014 book, The Purpose Economy, predicted the rise of purpose as a leading driver of economic growth and innovation. He coined the term ‘Purpose Mindset' and in partnership with NYU developed the first commercial measure of employee fulfillment. He has led national and global studies on purpose in the workplace and in higher education in partnership with leading corporations and universities. Key Takeaways The Purpose Economy was based on Taproot Foundation—a pro bono service to help business professionals use their skills to help nonprofits. The book makes the business case that purpose and meaning drive innovation and economic value creation. A key to having a sense of purpose and meaning in your life is strong relationships. Meaningful relationships and the need for purpose and meaning these are two of the biggest predictors of life span and quality of life. Research shows women over 55 are especially likely to have a purpose mindset. A purpose mindset is related to the strongest leaders with the highest performance. There is a strong case that people over 55 are the best employees. Recognition of the value of older people is a major opportunity for employers. At a Shared Purpose Retreat, attendees come with a “co pilot” – a spouse, sibling, or friend to share the experience and language. The co-pilot accelerates your ability to be vulnerable.

We are excited to introduce Jordana Megonigal on this episode of the Lessons Learned for Vets podcast. Although Jordana is neither a veteran nor a military spouse, she is a military daughter and has centered her life around serving those who have served through her organization, The RECON Network. This organization provides purpose-based career planning and resources for veterans, transitioning service members and their spouses. Today, she is focusing on the HUMAN side of transition. With a background in media publishing, Jordana ran a business magazine in South Carolina. In 2014, she decided to research how the military drawdown, under President Obama, could potentially impact the workforce in South Carolina. While doing research, her grandfather – an Iwo Jima Marine – began reverting back to Japan in his mind. She started to uncover some of the challenges her grandfather faced while transitioning back to civilian life after his service. It was during this time she decided to host a one-time event connecting South Carolina veterans with local resources. The success of the event verified the need for an organization that focuses on the human side of the transition and puts the individual at the center of it all to help them not just find a J-O-B, but a meaningful and productive life.We are bombarded with the idea of finding purpose, but there are very few resources that actually help people find that purpose. There are many studies that indicate that people who are living with high degrees of meaning or who are living in their purpose tend to learn faster, retain information longer, experience less cognitive decline and have less anxiety and depression. Jordana believes connecting people with their purpose can reduce the statistics on veteran depression and suicide. Aaron Hurst says it best in his book, The Purpose Economy, “Purpose is not a destination, it's about finding direction.” Your purpose is a constant direction - regardless of job, location, family status or your environment. Purpose and meaning come from moving in a chosen direction. Consider that what made you happy and content 10 years ago may not be the same things that make you content and fulfilled today. Many times, being in the military provides a brotherhood or sisterhood that can feel like a purpose. But when the service comes to an end, many feel like they are isolated with no clear focus or direction to pursue. At RECON, the process of finding purpose is individualized. People are provided tools that will help them continue to figure out their purpose even as their life situation changes. The RECON Network hosts an annual conference that focuses on all aspects of the military transition. People learn how to set goals, stay motivated and build a network. In addition, RECON hosts a workshop each quarter that focuses on a certain life skill or soft skill, like time management. Each Monday, RECON releases a new 5-minutes podcast to help listeners shape their week in a positive way. And if you need advice from a neutral perspective, RECON offers free sessions with a Certified Life Purpose coach. “Failure only holds power over you when it's accompanied by fear. The FEAR is what will hold you back—not the failure. So don't give up the failure; use it. Give up the FEAR that it means anything more than a next step toward progress.”Subscribe to our YouTube channel at https://tinyurl.com/llforvets22.You can connect with Jordana on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/jordanam/Explore RECON Network at https://recon.vet/SUBSCRIBE & LEAVE A FIVE-STAR REVIEW and share this to other veterans who might need help as they transition from the military!

Aaron dispels the 3 common myths about purpose (you may be surprised by a few of these), and we talk about what employee empowerment really means. This conversation is vital if you are a leader looking to create a winning culture, retain your best talent, and scale empathy and collaboration within your company. Key Takeaways:Take ownership of purpose. It is not about the cause, it is about you. Our mindset and how we process the world is actually what creates the fulfillment and not necessarily the job itself, or what we're doing. If your purpose is defined in a way in which it creates a fixed mindset about what jobs you can do, it's not the right mission or purpose. It's very rare that someone's issues at work have anything to do with anything other than relationships. "What creates meaning for people, is actually not the work itself. It's the process of reflecting on the work and making it meaningful." — Aaron Hurst About Aaron Hurst: CEO and co-founder, ImperativeAaron Hurst, the CEO and co-founder of Imperative, is the foremost expert on the science of purpose and fulfillment at work. The unpresented record breaking act of millions leaving their jobs has been coined "The Great Resignation" or as some call it "The Great Opportunity". Aaron Hurst entrepreneur and author of "The Purpose Economy" talks about finding purpose and fulfillment at work.

In this episode, Aaron Hurst discusses how his business Imperative is transforming peer mentoring and corporate relationships. His company uses psychology and neuroscience to help people build more meaningful relationships at work. Tune in to learn how to assess the value you produce, how to foster an environment of meaningful engagement at work, and how to leverage psychology to gain more market share. About our Guest: Aaron Hurst is the CEO of Imperative, a psychologically designed peer coaching company. Previously, he founded Taproot foundation which connected not-for-profit organizations with business executives who are willing to offer pro bono work. Aaron Hurst is the author of The Purpose Economy. Fun fact: If he could go back and rename the book, he would rename it The Psychology Economy. On today's episode: The 2 existential threats to the world that Aaron Hurst is solving.- 04:00 A new way to get career coaching (4 questions). - 06:09 Has remote work strengthened relationships at work?- 08:18 Why reverse the corporate culture around relationship building at work (two inflection points). - 09:13 Why mentoring usually fails (and how Aaron's company fixes that). -10:27 Aaron's journey as an entrepreneur in many different spaces. - 11:23 What kinds of companies need venture capital and why he chose the VC route. - 13:00 How does your role as a founder change when you become VC backed? (the 3 main things you have to focus on). - 14:39 What is the biggest driver of value in our economy? - 16:14 The dark side of using psychology to grow your company and what needs to change. - 18:08 Creating the foundation for grassroots change vs. getting involved in the political world. - 21:45 “Repair the world” how that principle guides him and keeps him humble.- 24:53 Why you shouldn't get too attached to the concept of legacy. - 28:54 What is your value above replacement? (a good way to make decisions AND assess if you are adding enough value) - 31:03 Lesson 1: Looking at your efforts with more detail (more on value above replacement)- 35:35 Lesson 2: Removing fear from our environments - 36:35 Lesson 3: What are you doing that pushes you on your journey and what do you do to elevate your standards? - 37:47 Key Takeaways: Sustainability and lack of social cohesion are the two largest existential threats to our human race. According to a Microsoft study, people's connections with their immediate team have strengthened during covid. However, it was found that their broader networks have been decimated. According to an MIT article, traditional mentoring has been proven not to be terribly effective while mentoring that is based on relationship building reaps better results. Mentoring usually doesn't tend to work well because the workplace is asymmetrical. When you are looking to make a big change, not just build a x million dollar company, but rather be an integral part of lots of people's lives you need venture capital to get there. The only way you scale as a venture backed business is by building systems and by building a team. As a CEO, you must be the person who plays a major role in defining the vision, creating the company culture and allocating the resources strategically. Psychology is the biggest economic driver of value. Most successful companies leverage psychology and neuroscience to grow. A good example is Facebook. The use of psychology to grow businesses has a dark side where businesses can negatively impact and manipulate their customers. Effectively, it almost makes businesses into drug dealers. Regulation is needed to keep the psychological influence of companies under control. In buddhist belief, you are taught to let go of attachment. The concept of legacy can be an attachment. Getting too fixated on legacy may prevent you from focusing on your happiness. Removing fear from our environments helps us build more meaningful and stronger relationships. The biggest driver of economic value in 2021 is leveraging psychology to capture the market: “There is a tremendous opportunity, which we've seen across every sector, to innovate and capture more market by meeting the human need for meaning, the human need for these positive psychological attributes in the market but also exploiting the negative ones...which is the dark side of this whole industry” - Aaron Hurst (17:57)How does your business leverage psychology to capture the market? You find yourself working in an environment where you're inspired to go in each day. You show up to serve, contribute, and make an impact. You pour your strengths, gifts, talents, passions, and efforts into every action you take, and the performance takes care of itself because you're so invested in what you do and why you do it. At the end of a hard-fought day, you feel fulfilled, not exhausted. You're excited to do it again the next day. That is the working world that we'll imagine today.CORE TOPICS + DETAILS:[6:28]The Birth of the Peace CorpsA transformative idea built on purposeWhen Aaron Hurst's grandfather came out of World War II, he thought a great deal about how to avoid World War III. His epiphany was that if people truly spend time in purpose, working together to understand each other's culture, then we had a chance to truly build understanding. This idea was the beginning of what became the Peace Corps.[14:22]Purpose in Ancient TimesBefore jobs and titles, there was purposeBefore jobs, managers, and infrastructure, we were all just people working together to survive. But our lives would have been filled with purpose— caring for our tribe, caring for the people around us, and finding ways to stay alive and stay healthy. So how do we bring that connectedness with purpose back to a world where so many things seem to stand in the way?[24:22]Seeing People as PeopleThe perspective that makes companies do well and do goodThe workforce must be designed for human beings, and if you don't treat your people and customers as human beings, you're missing an opportunity. Not only are you missing out on creating joy and purpose in people's lives, but you're also missing out on the chance to maximize shareholder value.[36:59]The Scientific MethodWant to understand your purpose? Go back to chemistry class. In science class, we learn about forming a hypothesis, measuring that hypothesis, and measuring your results. We should do the same thing in our careers. Run an experiment where you show up differently, try something new, build a different relationship, or make time to reflect. Build your career as a science experiment and watch what you can learn and discover.[47:12]Positivity at ScaleTracking and sharing the little ways we lift each other upAaron discusses the upcoming rollout of a new system that tracks positive comments and moments of connection that occur in work communication platforms around the world. It's all about exponential multiplication of positivity and purpose.[49:07]The Importance of CuriosityAsk questions, then ask moreIf you're not curious about someone, you'll never truly see them. We must be able to express curiosity about the people around us in a respectful and sensitive way and create space for people to be curious about ourselves while being more vulnerable and open.RESOURCES:[00:28] - Purpose Labs[01:18] - The Purpose Economy[4:50] - Imperative[4:56] - The Taproot Foundation[35:16] - Job Crafting Resources: HBR & U of M Ross School of Business[58:27] - The Power of Playing Offense[58:28] - Interview Your Who Downloadable ExerciseMAKE A PLAY:Getting to know the people who inspire us most can really help us find our own sense of purpose. №16 Aaron Hurst, Imperative, The Purpose EconomyMy guest for today's episode is Aaron Hurst. A veteran in the social entrepreneurship space, Aaron is an author and researcher in what he calls the “science of purpose and fulfillment at work.” Aaron is widely known as the Founder and CEO of the Taproot Foundation and the author of the book The Purpose Economy. Today, Aaron has taken the learning from Taproot and The Purpose Economy and folded it into Imperative, a social learning platform focused on peer coachingIn this very purposeful conversation, Aaron and I talk about:Aaron's journey, kicked off by a series of personal reflections about meaning and purpose after 9/11The origin of Taproot Foundation, and why some of the things the world most urgently needs is talent, and relationships based on knowledge and skill acquisitionWhy technology has made it no longer a privilege to search for your life purpose and create a meaningful career out of it, even if most people find it hard to believeThe conflict we face as professionals between advancing our careers for better financial rewards; and the impact of our work in our communities and the worldWhy virtually every organizational leader can advance conversations about purpose and social value generation, regardless of industry or sector.~
Purpose has become more and more a key concept for modern organizations: type ‘Purpose in American business’ into Google, and you’ll get 1,740,000,000 responses, for example. But how real is it? Is it the same as CSR, or giving corporate money to a good cause? And, crucially, what’s its connection—if any—to L&D? On this special new Season on the podcast, we’re attempting to answer these and other questions about Purpose under the rubric, ‘Is Purpose Working?’ As you may know by now, we’re doing this with the help of RedThread Research and with the welcome support of an ed tech firm equally interested in finding out an answer, too—NovoEd, a developer of a collaborative online learning platform that builds high-value capabilities that result in real impact. In this second conversation in our researches, I am delighted to be joined by RedThread principal analyst Stacia Garr. Stacia proves invaluable in us both teasing out insight from someone who just might be the foremost expert on the science of purpose and fulfillment at work: consultant, VC, social entrepreneur and Seattle-based Purpose influencer Aaron Hurst. In 2014, his book ‘The Purpose Economy’ brought widespread attention to the concept of Purpose and its importance for our lives today (for me especially). Now CEO and co-founder of Imperative, a platform that connects and supports employees as peer career coaches, Aaron describes how his new venture enables video-based peer coaching conversations across organizations that drive mindset and behavior changes that increase leadership abilities, productivity, and fulfillment. It’s work that caps his famous stint as the founder of pro bono volunteer channel The Taproot Foundation, which connects talented people with non-profits—and, we hear, connects him and one of the other people on the podcast! Finally, a reminder that all this ‘Is Purpose Working?’ work is set to peak in a live, online gated experience where Dani, Stacia and I will debate all the Learnings from Season 7 that have come through, with inputs including today’s great discussion with Aaron. Be assured you will also be able to debate with us and get your question asked—but to get your questions in nice and early, lock-in your free place at the webinar over at the special NovoEd microsite supporting the project, www.novoed.com/purpose. Now let’s go, and be sure to stick around for a quick three-way debate on what Aaron told us at the end. So now, let’s hear from someone you might style the Father of Purpose, debating such key milestones of his career and thinking as: how he ended up in Seattle after ‘something of a nomadic career;' why the non-profit world he started working in frustrated him—and what he did about it; why Taproot was just a vitamin, not real nutrition; why he wrote 'The Purpose Economy' and how he’s convinced we’re in a whole new economic era fuelled by ‘meaning;' what last year’s Business Roundtable commitment to Purpose did for a lot of CEOs; and much more.

Mike Wood is pleased to welcome Aaron Hurst to this week’s show. Aaron is the founder of Imperative, a SAAS platform that helps people understand their purpose. He and Mike chat about how investing in relationships makes work more meaningful. From Volunteering to Pro Bono Work Aaron launched the Taproot Foundation to change volunteerism. Through his foundation, people contributed their professional skills pro bono, instead of just volunteering time. Aaron soon recognized that people were using their pro bono work to get fulfilment in their lives. The challenge, he realized, was how to make work itself more meaningful. He founded Imperative as a solution to this problem. His company created a purpose assessment to help people uncover what brings purpose to them. Imperative also launched a peer coaching platform to help employees align and grow with their organizations. Relationships Matter 150,000 persons have completed the purpose assessment, Aaron says. While just knowing your purpose increases your odds of being fulfilled, Aaron understood that there was still a need for a model to help people live out their purpose on a daily basis. He saw that people who find their work meaningful tend to have good relationships with their peers, a network they can rely on for support, learning and growth. Imperative’s platform allows employees to build those relationships with their peers. Mike agrees that it’s the people you work with who make you stay at a company. Mental Health Issues Aaron cites statistics that show that 50% - some researchers say up to 75% - of millennial turnover is tied to mental health issues. This is due in part to the fact that many people do not have strong relationships. Mike comments that first jobs are usually a big let down from the lofty expectations of college. “You can get a little bit depressed right out of the workforce,” he says. Social media can add to the depression, especially when you see everyone “living their best life on Facebook” and your life cannot compare. Mike says that we all need to have a supportive network at work to lift us up together. Investing In Relationships Even when your job seems menial, you find it purposeful when you have a great relationship with your peers. Aaron says that if you focus on relationships, it feeds everything else. He challenges listeners to think about the people who bring meaning to their work, and to invest in building more of those relationships. Mission, purpose and engagement seem to promise great gains for the organizations who get these right. More and more employees are voting with their feet in search of a greater sense of purpose and a mission that is more inspiring than just increasing shareholder returns. However, there's a lot of buzz and not a lot of guidance. What does the latest research tell us about how to find purpose and feel more fulfilled either as a person or as a leader?

What does it mean to build a business that not only makes money but also makes a meaningful contribution to people's lives? In a world where people are looking for more than just a paycheck how do we attract and keep talented people? In this webinar Carlos talks with Arthur Woods the cofounder of Imperative, an organisation that has set out to help everyone realise their potential as employees and educate businesses as to why this is imporant. Building on the pioneering work of his cofounder Aaron Hurst, author of the Purpose Economy, they have brought together over a decade's worth of research to design a framework and set of tools to help people get clear on their purpose. We love their work so much that we've partnered with them to integrate their tools into our Home School program. We believe that business success comes from strong leadership and that strong leadership comes from clarity. When you understand your purpose and what really motivates you into action then work becomes much more effortless.

Today we're interviewing Aaron Hurst, the co-founder & CEO of Imperative, and the author of The Purpose Economy. Aaron has been wired to challenge the status quo from a very early age. He sees opportunity and potential in every direction, and by his own admission is a bit of a troublemaker. During Aaron’s childhood, he moved around a lot and, as a result, he developed the important skill of pattern recognition, a trait that has served him well throughout his entrepreneurial efforts. Early in Aaron’s career, he founded the Taproot Foundation, a pro-bono community of professionals who volunteered their time and expertise to helping mission-driven nonprofits with the marketing, PR, and other important services they need to achieve maximum impact. This community blossomed into a $15 billion marketplace. Perhaps the most interesting takeaway was the power of purpose that emerged. Aaron would constantly hear about the sense of meaning the participants would feel from helping the nonprofit community. This theme continues today; Aaron and his team at Imperative are focused on unlocking and measuring the power of purpose inside of organizations, not only for the organization, but helping the individual employees inside of organizations to connect their individual purpose to the purpose of the organization. In 2014, Aaron published his book, The Purpose Economy, which predicts the next economic wave will be known as the Purpose Era.

Author Aaron Hurst has a plan to replace LinkedIn LNKD +1.23% with a purpose-driven alternative called Imperative. Hurst is the author of The Purpose Economy, which helps to understand the global shift from an information economy to a purpose economy. He sees the sharing economy and companies from AirBnB to ZipCar as examples of a more purpose-focused ethos that millennials especially are adopting. More broadly, Hurst sees a world in which people manifest a sense of purpose with virtually everything they do, from where and how they work and socialize to how they consume products from the daily coffee to the exotic vacation. We are infusing everything with purpose. Hurst will be speaking at the Social Enterprise and Crowdfunding Conference (SECFC14) on September 26, 2014 at Snowbird, Utah, which I am organizing. About Imperative: Imperative is a movement to evolve the economy into one driven by purpose. We believe in a more human world where by better understanding our purpose, we are able to unite to better solve the world’s problems. We are building a network of bold and authentic people and connecting them to purpose at work and in their community. It involves helping people discover their purpose profile, connecting them to others in their professional community and activating city-based projects for local social impact. As society increasingly prioritizes personal growth, relationships and impact, Imperative is becoming the catalyzing force behind the transition to a Purpose Economy. We are entering a really exciting time as our team grows and our vision comes together in an actionable product. It’s a dynamic, fast-paced environment where we love what we do and have a lot of fun together. Do you seek purpose from your work? Do you strive for impact, personal growth and community? On Friday, May 23, we hosted Aaron Hurst, CEO of Imperative and author of The Purpose Economy, for our first Speaker Series event hosted from our Dublin office, and a discussion around working with purpose.A series of shifts are happening in our economy: A record of number of millennials are trading in conventional career paths to launch tech start-ups, start small businesses that are rooted in local communities, or freelance their expertise. We are sharing everything from bikes and cars to extra rooms in our homes.Globally recognized entrepreneur and founder of Taproot Foundation, that helped create the $15 billion pro bono service market, Aaron Hurst argues in his latest book, The Purpose Economy: How Your Desire for Impact, Personal Growth and Community is Changing the World, that while these developments seem unrelated at first, taken together they reveal a powerful pattern that points to purpose as the new driver of the global economy."Aaron Hurst powerfully sums up in The Purpose Economy the fundamental changes taking place in the business world." -Arianna Huffington, Chair, President and Editor-in-Chief, Huffington Post Media Group"Here is that rare animal, a business book grounded in compassion. The Purpose Economy taps into our deep craving for meaning in our life and work. If Aaron Hurst is right, and I think he is, we are on the threshold of a new, more value-rich era in business. This book will help find your place in it." -Daniel H. For the majority of the boomer generation, and generations that preceded it, work was mostly an obligation. A way of earning one's way in the world, a way of paying for the perceived American dream. Today that’s changed. Today the work itself is often the object. For millennials, the work must have purpose. It must be fulfilling in its own right, and the efforts, even if it’s just a small part of the whole, must contribute to something bigger. Today, rather than the artificial construct of work/ life balance, work and life are merging into a seamless self actualized effort. This is not just a psychological observation. In fact, this direction coupled with the growing information economy, is changing the very fabric of economic exchange. It’s creating what Aaron Hurst calls The Purpose Economy. My conversation with Aaron Hurst:
