But somehow, it did – due in part to the unlikely combination of WWII Germany, a modest English engineer who created a worker's paradise, an ambitious industrialist prosecuted as a traitor and a hardworking PhD. All of these factors and personalities helped build modern Norway, one aluminium ingot at a time.Today's guests are Hans Otto Frøland, Svein Richard Brandtzæg and Randi Holmestad. Frøland is one of the researchers working in the Fate of Nations project, which is based at NTNU and focused on the global history and political economy of natural resources. Marczuk przekonuje, że takie inwestycje, jak Centralny Port Komunikacyjny rozumiany jako zarówno port lotniczy, jak i sieci kolejowe, duży i mały atom, czy rozbudowa portu w Świnoujściu, to nie narodowa megalomania, a odpowiedź na realne potrzeby rozwojowe Polski. Dodatkowo, jak twierdzi Marczuk, w przypadku lotniska CPK publiczne koszty inwestycji są w mediach zawyżone, gdyż rzadko zwraca się uwagę, że częściowo spłaci koszty własnej budowy z emitowanych przez siebie obligacji i pieniędzy inwestorów. Zdaniem Marczuka upolitycznienie i gorąca temperatura sporu o CPK wynika z tego, że poprzedni rząd uczynił go swoim sztandarowym projektem, co sprawiło, że jedno z drugim jest utożsamiane przez obecną władzę. W rozmowie pojawia się także wątek błędów inwestycyjnych USA i Chin, z których pierwsze zaniedbały, a drugie przeskalowały swoją infrastrukturę, co w obu przypadkach prowadzi do olbrzymich problemów finansowych państwa. Marczuk uważa, że w Polsce nie ma obecnie zagrożenia przeskalowaniem inwestycji, choć faktycznie istnieją spore potrzeby konserwacyjne i modernizacyjne, jak choćby w przypadku linii przesyłowych.

Once there were around 150 so-called "Big Things", now there are said to be around a thousand along Australian highways. The giant sculptures and buildings in the shape of animals, people, fruit or vegetables are usually kitschy, but so popular that they have now even been immortalised on the country's coins. Barbara Barkhausen asked whether the "Big Things" are cult objects, tourist traps or perhaps just kitsch. And she asked German emigrants which new "Big Things" they would still like to see. Our guest on today's episode is Simon Woodroffe, the founder of YO! Sushi. Simon had never opened a restaurant before when he launched YO! Sushi in Soho in 1997 — and at first, it seemed like the robot waiters, smoke-extracting ashtrays and raw fish served off conveyor belts might be too much for Londoners to get their heads around. But they soon fell in love with it, of course — and it was Simon's gung-ho spirit and experimental ideas, in fact, that made the brand such a colossal hit. We recorded this episode on Simon's beautiful house boat on Cheyne Walk on the Thames — and the conversation bobbed along nicely from Simon's early days as a set designer for rock and roll acts, to the reasons why he decide to leave Dragons Den, and even his dream to bring private islands to the masses.
