WARC's US commissioning editor Cathy Taylor talks with Neil Parker, chief strategy officer and co-founder of Co:Collective about the company's research on how and why purpose-led companies succeed not only in doing the right thing, but in terms of business metrics. The company conducted qualitative research by interviewing a number of established brands and organizations, including Hewlett-Packard, The New York Times, Unilever and UNICEF. The research showed enormous consistency in how each company approaches purpose: each aligns their organization against a purpose that fits with their business, embeds it throughout the organization, and then activates it through a variety of operations and strategies. Co:Collective calls these generative businesses businesses because they generate additional value for more stakeholders, on a more sustainable basis. WARC's Cathy Taylor talks with Havas' Jon Waite and Lumen's Mike Follett about new attention research that details the power of aggregate attention in delivering results. The research, which concentrated on display advertising and was performed in partnership with Brand Metrics, looked at 9,000 brand uplift studies, and 11 years of eye-tracking data, providing scale to the understanding of how attention works.  Among other findings, the research showed that aggregate attention time, on a user-by-user basis, should be a key unit of analysis – brands should start looking beyond attention per impression to what the attention value is when individual consumers  see a burst of impressions.  It also demonstrated how attention needs differ depending on the outcomes a brand is looking for; upper-funnel metrics like awareness can benefit from multiple hits of small attention, but for campaigns more focused on driving sales, slightly higher average attention with slightly less frequency may be a better approach.  For more insights into attention, check out the new WARC Guide to Attention. How Bill S-216 Could Transform the Canadian Nonprofit Sector Forever

In our last episode of CharityVillage Connects, which explored alternative revenue streams for nonprofits, we touched on a piece of legislation that, if enacted, could have a dramatic impact on how charities do their work. Bill S-216, otherwise known as the Effective and Accountable Charities Act, seeks to amend the Income Tax Act to empower charities by allowing them to more effectively collaborate with a wider range of organizations, including those without charitable status, which the Act refers to as “non-qualified donees”. Proponents of the Bill say the amendments are necessary to get rid of burdensome and expensive redtape and outdated legal bureaucracy.  But the key shift proposed by Bill S-216 is much more aspirational: to eliminate the deeply-rooted and historic paternalism that many see embedded in the current rules about how charities can operate. In this episode, we speak with Senator Ratna Omidvar, sponsor of Bill S-216, and with other nonprofit sector experts to explore the pros and cons of this legislation, as well as the deeper implications of what it means for Canadian charitable organizations if it becomes law.Meet Our Guests in Order of Appearance ·        The Honourable Ratna Omidvar, Senator for Ontario, The Senate of Canada·        Susan Manwaring, Partner at Miller Thomson LLP·        Cathy Taylor, Executive Director of the Ontario Nonprofit Network·        Mark Blumberg, Partner at Blumberg Segal LLP·        Bill Mintram, Director Indigenous and Northern Relations at Rideau Hall Foundation·        Kris Archie, Chief Executive Officer of The Circle on Philanthropy and Aboriginal Peoples in Canada (The Circle)  About your HostMary Barroll, president of CharityVillage, is an online business executive and lawyer with a background in media, technology and IP law. Audio Description has been around for over 30 years: it is filling in the silences on TV, films and the theatre so that blind and partially sighted people can follow the action easier. The current legal requirements for audio description, for all of the major broadcasters, is set at 10% but there are currently no legal requirements for on-demand streaming, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime etc. We speak with one of the Principals in Ofcom's Content Policy team, Cathy Taylor about Ofcom's plans for on-demand streaming and ask whether the requirements should be set higher than 10%. There has been a boom in people playing video games over the lockdown period, and there are plenty of visually impaired people who have been joining in on the fun. We hear about an audio only video game that is entirely accessible to blind and partially sighted players. It is rather rare for an audio only game to reach the major consoles but this one is available on the Xbox. Its called The Vale: The Shadow of the Crown. We hear a review from someone who has played it and we speak to the game's developer, Dave Evans.

The success of nursing education programs has never been as important as it is now. An older, more chronically ill, and culturally diverse patient population coupled with new graduate retention challenges are compelling nursing schools to rethink how they prepare new nurses. In this episode of the Second Opinions podcast, we talk to Dr. Cathy Taylor, Dean of Nashville’s Belmont University College of Health Sciences and Nursing, about today’s nursing students and the future of nurse education. Dr. Taylor speaks at length about how training curricula must change to match the unique characteristics of the connected, digital millennial workforce, and how we need to set expectations with students about the rigors and demands of the nursing profession. She also addresses the changing demands of the nursing workplace and Belmont’s transition to concept-based learning aimed at producing flexible, curious, engaged graduates who are ready sooner to provide professional care.

Roscoe and Gary feel on the cusp of stardom and celebrity as they record Episode 48 in time for the holidays. Basking in the great feedback and listener response to our Charna Halpern interview on the last episode, the boys dream of Booth One seating at the great establishments of the world, particularly the Old Ebbett Grill in Washington, DC, where the shellfish is always fresh and the oysters are always briny and cold. We announce the winner of our Hamilton ticket raffle - that lucky someone who will accompany Gary and Roscoe to the Chicago production on Dec. 4. And the winner is......Fran Bernstein, long-time friend and fan of the show! Congratulations, Fran. We'll see you at the PrivateBank Theatre on the aisle! And don't forget we have the VIP Experience before curtain and at intermission. How Booth One of us.... Gary and Roscoe take a tour of the current Broadway season, noting that the aforementioned Hamilton grossed $3.3M last week, the most money ever made in a single week by a Broadway show. Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 also cleared the $1M mark (much to Roscoe's consternation), joining the ranks of The Lion King, Wicked and Aladdin. Another new Broadway show, Heisenberg, prompts Roscoe to share one of his great unpleasant theater-going experiences of all time. Hint: It involves a faulty hearing device and a Wednesday matinee crowd. And tickets for Sally Field in The Glass Menagerie appear to be selling briskly for a March opening. Lost footage of a filmed version of this play from the 1960's starring Shirley Booth of Hazel fame and Hal Holbrook will be aired on Turner Classic Movies during December. Gary went to the circus again. For the first time in 134 years without elephants. But it's still an experience not to be missed. Booth One tip: Sit as close as you can without being in the front row. It's worth it for the smell of the greasepaint and the roar of the crowd. As well as the snarling of the lions and tigers. Here's an image of Gary in his souvenir pachyderm hat! On a related note, Elephant Polo will now be disbanded in Nepal in the continuing and important efforts for elephant conservation and welfare. Though widely known for it's humane treatment of the animals since 1982, a spokesperson for the International Elephant Polo Championships said, "We've always been ahead of the game in the way we treat our elephants, but we prefer our elephants to remain as elephants, and elephant polo is hardly that." Live long and prosper, you great giants of the jungle. It's been a stellar season for great movies, but we rue the fact that many of the smaller films come and go so quickly in Chicago to make room for the holiday blockbusters. Some films we wish stayed around longer so we could see them are Moonlight, Loving, Birth of a Nation and Inferno. Roscoe mourns for Warren Beatty and his new film Rules Don't Apply, which received mixed notices but can only be seen at 10:00am at one theater in the city. And has per screen grosses in only the hundreds of dollars. Sad. It's A Wonderful Life has always been one of Gary's favorite films, and this holiday season he visited the Live in Chicago version presented by American Blues Theatre. It's a clever, well-produced, and highly entertaining piece of theatre, and Gary recommends it as a perennial must-see. To give our listeners a flavor of the presentation and the high quality of the actors involved, we've inserted a few excerpts from the production, courtesy of the American Blues Theatre publicist and friend of the show, Cathy Taylor. You'll hear George Bailey, Bert & Ernie, Mary Bailey, Mr. Potter, and the unique talents of a great Foley artist. If this doesn't put you in the holiday spirit, we don't know what will. Another installment of Remembering Roscoe highlights the life of Howard Johnson, graduate of Monticello High School in 1912. A true story of triumph of the human spirit. Inspiring, moving, and a story worth remembering.
