Scott Cerone grew up on Long Island, listening to the Concord supersonic airliner fly final approach to JFK Airport, and KNEW he wanted to fly. He attended the United States Air Force Academy, majoring in General Engineering, and went to Undergraduate Pilot Training at Colombus Air Force Base. Scott ("Hummer") did well enough in training to score an assignment to the A-10 aircraft, and served in combat over Kosovo, the only war that was fought exclusively by air power. Along with other pilots in his unit, he writes about his experiences in A-10s Over Kosovo, available from Air University Press. Scott has been a pilot at United Airlines for eight years and is a Captain on the B737.

Months back we stumbled into the knowledge that baseball legend and Newark native Rick Cerone released a song in 1981 called "A Long Way Home". We made it a stated goal to someday talk to this Jersey sports icon about this strange blip in his history.Huge thanks to listener Erin, who was able to put us in touch with Mr. Cerone, and huge thanks to Rick himself, who is a charming ass dude with many stories to share. From the story behind the aforementioned song, to coming up in Essex County, he has no shortage of stories...... but perhaps most importantly, he reveals the existence of a New Jersey organization that is beyond our wildest imagination. Our podcast is officially old enough to drink! Chris and Gab open with taking a couple of (deserved) shots at the Phillies - so now you can cue their comeback. Then, they are joined by self-described radio utility hitter Suzy Cerone. Suzy discusses the unique position she has in radio, the necessity to be ready and organized at a moment's notice, and we talk about accents a little more. Suzy tells Chris he's in her top 5 favorite radio DJs, which apparently was a lower number than the last time they spoke. Wednesday on the pod, I think it was the Twenty-Seventh of Julyyyyyy. In this episode we discuss the legacy of the famous German resource of Rabbinic parallels to the New Testament, referred to often as Strack-Billerbeck. For this we're joined by Jacob Cerone, who is a doctoral candidate at the Friedrich Alexander Universität, in Erlagen, Germany, and General Editor and one of translators of the English translation of Strack-Billerbeck (published by Lexham Press). In our conversation, Jacob tells us about the people behind the well-known volume, both Hermann Strack and Paul Billerbeck respectively, as well as the context in which this resource was produced. Further, we discuss the legacy and reception of this resource as well as some of the critiques and concerns about it. Throughout the conversation Jacob provides helpful insights into the various ways that newcomers to Strack-Billerbeck can make use of this great resource in a careful and critical manner. Team members on the episode from The Two Cities include: Dr. John Anthony Dunne, Jennifer Guo, and Dr. Logan Williams.
We're back with this month's edition of our monthly Deep Dive series, usually reserved for Patreon. Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin' Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past. A New Jersey native who starred at Seton Hall, Rick Cerone seemed perfectly suited to play baseball in New York. It just took him a little while to get there. Drafted in the first round by Cleveland, Cerone was traded to the expansion Toronto Blue Jays, where he caught the first game in franchise history and established himself. Cerone was traded home to the Yankees in 1980 following Thurman Munson's tragic death. He had a career year in 1980 before clashing with George Steinbrenner and getting exiled—and brought back again. After his third departure from the Yankees, the 37 year old was anxious to stay close to home and play for a contender. The 1991 Mets would seem to fill both bills. But while Cerone would have a solid season in orange and blue, the 1991 Mets decidedly would not. As always, you can listen or subscribe to this and all of our wonderful Amazin' Avenue Audio podcasts through Apple Podcasts, where we encourage you to leave a review if you enjoy the show. It really helps! And you can find us on the Stitcher app, or listen wherever you get podcasts. If you've got an idea for a player to be featured on UnforMETable, let us know in the comments. Make sure to follow Rob on Twitter (@WolffRR), and you can now follow the show, too (@unformetable). Tune in next week for another tale from the Mets' past. Learn more about your ad choices. LemonAID Warriors is a youth empowerment program that aims to give young people the tools that they need to turn their compassion into action, and raise funds and awareness for causes that they care about Lulu Cerone was an entrepreneur from an early age. At the age of six, she opened her first lemonade stand. At first, she used the money to buy toys or candy. But her mom made a suggestion. Why not use the profits to help someone else? Lulu looked into it and found an animal shelter that needed the funds. “This really crazy thing happened,” Lulu said. “This crazy thing I was doing with my friends actually took on this whole new meaning. It became a lot more fun. My friends and I became more engaged. We felt like what we were doing was meaningful.” Lulu became interested in community service. However, she had a hard time finding opportunities to serve at a young age. Most organizations require volunteers to be 16 to 18 years-old. She found a few opportunities through her school. Her parents tried helping her to find opportunities. Lulu explains, “It’s hard to know how to raise effective global citizens as a parent.” In 2010, when an earthquake struck Haiti, Lulu was ten years old. She says, “That was the first time I was aware of a global tragedy. I remember being online with my mom and looking at pictures of kids whose lives had been completely changed by the earthquake. I really had this strong urge to help.” When Lulu went to school, she challenged the boys to a Boys vs Girls LemonAID fundraising competition. Her fifth-grade class raised just over $4,000 in two weeks. This early success has had a ripple effect. “I found it spinning out of my control really quickly,” Lulu says. She looked back at what worked with the Lemonade stands and came up with bigger idea – PhilanthroParties. A PhilanthroParty is any gathering with a social purpose behind it. Lulu started an organization, LemonAID Warriors to spread this idea of youth empowerment. She wrote a book, PhilanthroParties!: A Party-Planning Guide for Kids Who Want to Give Back. “This is such a simple idea, but people really latched onto it,” Lulu says. “There is power in simplicity.” Lulu has attracted partnerships for her business. She partnered with Mattel and Forever 21. She was recently recognized as a L’Oréal Woman of Worth. She is currently a freshman in collage as she continues to develop her nonprofit. Social Entrepreneurship Quotes from Lulu Cerone “Growing up, I had a passion for community service.” “Young people can get involved.” “They can do it in fun and simple ways that integrate social action into their social life.” “That’s when I had my first PhilanthroParty.” “It was the first time my friends and I felt like we could be agents of change.” “I did not set out to start a nonprofit organization.” “This is such a simple idea, but people really latched onto it.” “There is power in simplicity.” “LemonAID Warriors is youth-driven and community-based.” “It was incredible being in eighth grade and having Mattel looking to me.” “See yourself as an important agent of change.” Social Entrepreneurship Resources: LemonAID Warriors: http://www.lemonaidwarriors.com/ Book: PhilanthroParties!: A Party-Planning Guide for Kids Who Want to Give Back: http://philanthropartiesbook.com L’Oréal Women of Worth:https://www.lorealparisusa.com/women-of-worth.aspx Book: Crazy Good Advice: 10 Lessons Learned from 150 Leading Social Entrepreneurs: https://tonyloyd.com/book
