In her new book, The Unseen Truth: When Race Changed Sight in America (Harvard University Press), the historian and Harvard professor Sarah Lewis unpacks a major part of United States history that until now wasn't just brushed over, but was intentionally buried: how the Caucasian War and the end of the Civil War were conflated by P.T. Barnum, former President Woodrow Wilson, and others to shape how we see race in America. Long overdue, The Unseen Truth is a watershed book about photography and visuality that calls to mind works by history-shaping authors such as James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, and bell hooks. Lewis is also the founder of the Vision & Justice initiative, which strives to educate the public about the importance of art and culture for equity and justice in the U.S., and is launching a new publishing venture with Aperture this fall.On the episode, she discusses the tension between pedagogy and propaganda; the deep influence of Frederick Douglass's 1861 “Pictures and Progress” lecture on her work; how a near-death car crash altered the course of her life and The Unseen Truth; and the special ability of certain photographs to stop time.Special thanks to our Season 10 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Sarah Lewis[04:01] The Unseen Truth[05:24] Woodrow Wilson[05:24] Frederick Douglass[05:24] P.T. Throughout this journey, he held steadfast to his cosmic dream.   Charles' intriguing encounter with a four-leaf clover, was a serendipitous sign that solidified his commitment and purpose in pursuing his dream.   Fast forward to today, Charles has launched his life-long dream of space TV by streaming real-time videos from space for the benefit of all humanity.   As he extends his reach to the Moon and beyond, Charles envisions an independent media for humanity, shaping our collective understanding of the cosmos and its profound impact on our lives.

Roger Stone is a Republican strategist, consultant and author. He is most often described as a self-confessed political dirty trickster and longtime Trump adviser, given to flamboyance in tailoring and swinging as well as campaign stunts. Now 70, Stone started out as a student volunteer on Richard Nixon's re-election campaign in 1972, “Pulling… penny-ante tricks” against Democrats or, in the Nixonian vernacular, “ratf**king” the president's opponents. Before Nixon's downfall in 1974, amid the Watergate scandal, Stone worked for the Committee to Re-elect the President, or 'CREEP'. Walter Dellinger and Charles Black are hard acts to follow, but our concluding role model is up to the task.  Telford Taylor was legislator, war hero, Nuremberg prosecutor, international law pioneer, law firm founder, tenured professor and scholar extraordinaire, public intellectual, and always a principled, skilled lawyer.  Professor Amar admired his work from afar, and that admiration led to a personal meeting, to Akhil's first major law review article in the Harvard Law Review, and ultimately, to the opening scene of his latest book.  Meanwhile, in the news, we also take time to look at the latest developments, statements, and misstatements filling the air on the notorious Texas abortion law, SB8.

Continuing our exploration of inspirational models in the law that deeply influenced Professor Amar's career, today we learn of a predecessor of last week's model - the newly passed Walter Dellinger - as we hear of the life of Charles Black.  A son of the deep South, Black made an enormous mark as he was a vital part of the team that won Brown vs. Board of Education, and in the aftermath, we see his genius as he defends the decision, and separately reflects on how he came to his principled positions.  We see this as he picks up pen and paper and leaves these notes for the ages.  You will now hear these writings and Akhil's reaction to them, and ultimately they will lead us back to considering the emerging picture of Ketanji Brown Jackson, nominee to the Supreme Court, in these lights.

The great Walter Dellinger, one of Professor Amar's role models in the law and one of the great lawyers of the past century, moves Professor Amar to present and review his role models and why they matter to all of us.  Dellinger's career was so enormous in its scope, so impactful in its action, that it forms a scaffolding for considering topics as varied as the most important SCOTUS footnote ever written; other momentous careers such as Earl Warren, Charles Black, and Telford Taylor; the lighter side of working for President Clinton; the last public statements of Benjamin Franklin and now Dellinger himself - and much more.  Fittingly, Dellinger's last writing has impact beyond his demise, as he provided background and perspective for the momentous nomination by President Biden of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to Associate Justice of the Supreme Court - and so we consider that.

Don's done practically everything there is to do in the hobby.  He's worked with giants like Frank Chadwick, run a games store, published (and killed!) wargames magazines, manufactured lead figures and now is doing cutting edge work in 3D printing as you'd expect from his extensive technical background. He's also a published fiction author, and the only guy we know personally to have a Wikpedia entry! Here is my conversation with Charles Murray (of The Bell Curve fame) about his new book, Facing Reality: Two Truths about Race in America. We review the argument of his book—that the "American Creed" of fair play and equal treatment for all is imperiled by a failure to reckon with the actual differences across racial groups in measured intelligence and participation in violent crime. We explore the evidence for his claim about racial differences, the extent to which these facts are being denied, and the plausibility of his concern that said denial threatens to undermine the republic. We also discuss the effectiveness of policy interventions aimed at reducing racial disparities. If you google “boyfriend is bad in bed?” you can read thousands of cries for help shared by women. Women complain to their friends about men who can’t satisfy them. Online forums are full of complaints like “Sex with my boyfriend is terrible” & “He comes after 1 minute” and it just gets worse and worse. On this page you can find out if these messages are about you – even if you think of yourself as a sex god – and you’ll learn how to become so amazing in bed that women will become addicted to sex with you. If you’re able to do that, it’s not only good for the woman, but also for you. Because a woman who gets good sex, becomes addicted to it. But if a man is bad in bed, she’ll dump him after a few dates, or she’ll cheat. The uncomfortable truth about men's skills in the bedroom It’s time for a reality check. A painful truth I didn’t dare to face up to for years, but which changed my life (and the lives of thousands of other men). I can explain it to you, but I’d rather show you the results of a recent poll. 7 out of 10 women fake orgasms Only 3 percent ever had good sex during a one night stand On average, women have one good lover in their lives. The rest is mediocre or bad. 51% have never had an orgasm through of penetration 78% say they dumped a man because of bad sex. Shocking? It’s only the tip of the iceberg… And it’s the reason why millions of men get cheated on and/or dumped… Without knowing they are doing anything wrong, but more about that later. … And now I know you’re probably thinking, “but I am that exception who is good in bed.” There’s probably been a woman at some point, who said that she really enjoyed the sex she had with you. And I hate having to burst your bubble, but let me tell you this. Every woman you’ve ever dated, has lied to you... In this episode of Outlaws and Gunslingers, we take a look at Charles "Black Bart" Boles. During his "career" as an outlaw, he is said to have robbed at least 28 stage coaches. One thing separates him from others outlaws though, he supposedly never fired his weapon during a robbery or used swear words. Follow his story from mining for gold in California, to serving for the Union Army in the Civil War all the way to his very last robbery. As usual, we give you info all while adding some entertainment to the story!

Projects exist within the context and value requirements of their organizations. This episode looks at three angles the organization can (should!) take to get the right projects designed for the strategy set by executives and the organization as a whole. From design, to portfolio management, to identifying where the projects may fail the strategy as they generate and collide with organizational constraints, these guests Charles Black, Steve Butler and Dr. Alan Barnard speak to us from the international community of PMs. What we learn? We need more than a focus on how to manage a project, we need to think how our organizations can lean in to get the right projects doing the right things. Listen in, learn and get a free PDU!
