Thursday afternoon means a new episode of the Real Life Podcast is ready to wrap up your week and help you navigate the rest of it. On today's show, the guys discussed the Nation Christmas party, Babe Rwuth theories, and some love for Zach Hyman's toughness. The boys kicked off the Thursday episode of Real Life with a discussion about the Nation Christmas party that happened last night at Nation HQ and how the party rolled on until 4 AM for some of the staff. After spending literally two seconds recapping the party, the conversation turned to a much darker place. If you've never heard the Babe Ruth stories from back in the day, this first section of the podcast will be illuminating. From there, the conversation turned back to the White Elephant gift exchange at the Nation Christmas party and how it was an elite way to spend an hour. Not only were there endless steals, but the chaos that ensued as the rounds progressed was thrilling to witness. That also led to the boys discussing whether it's fair game to take your own present back, provided you're not thrilled with the other options.Moving the show back to the Oilers, the guys started the discussion with some love for Zach Hyman after getting his nose broken and returning to play the very next period. If you've seen the pictures of him from practice Thursday morning, it's incredible to think of how tough the guy has to be to keep playing with that kind of injury. The fellas also covered the disappointing loss to the Florida Panthers on Monday, and how it was an annoying blip during what has been a fantastic stretch of hockey. Finally, Chalmers asked the guys for their opinion on using the app Splitwise, and if it ever makes sense to split costs equally. While there are certainly times when splitting the bill makes sense, getting too much into the weeds on expenses can really ruin the vibe of a trip. As you'll hear, no one on the podcast subscribes to this kind of thing, and you'd be better off not inviting them anywhere if you are.

I am trying something new here. I am recording this podcast solo and sharing my hunt packing plan and the gear I bring for my upcoming elk hunt. I am very curious how this lands with the EatWild audience. If this podcast translates for you, then let me know and I'll share more like this. Here is my Adventure Hunt Planning List. Feel free to follow along on this podcast as I share how I organize, plan, and pack for my hunt. This is a general list. There is no guarantee this is has everything you need for a hunt, but it's a good starting point. Download and save a copy and add it to it for you. Please let me know if I missed anything too! This podcast is about planning a hunting trip, explicitly focusing on the initial concept or plan, choosing hunting partners, coordinating logistics, and organizing gear and food. I share my comprehensive gear list and considerations for food planning, including the trade-offs between freeze-dried meals and cooking real food. I share my theory for a detailed packing list, including food, a day hunting kit, a spike camp kit, a base camp kit, a clothing kit, a meat care kit, a personal kit, a tech kit, and elk hunting gear. Dylan's gear list. Join me at the Spike Camp community at 7 pm, on August 27th, 2024. I'll be conducting an online presentation on early-season elk hunting. The iHunter App supports the Eatwild Podcast and other programs. It is an essential tool for making you more comfortable in the woods. The app's mapping layers, navigation tools, and hunting regulations are packed into it to give you the information you need on your next adventure. Use the code EATWILD10 on your next purchase. Beere makes a great selection of bright, crisp beers perfect for the patio or around the campfire. Takeaways Start the hunt planning process with a concept or plan that excites you. Choose hunting partners who are committed, compatible, and have hunting confidence. Coordinate logistics through group chats and online meetings. Use technology like radios and inReach devices for communication and navigation. Create a comprehensive gear list and consider the trade-offs between freeze-dried meals and cooking real food. Prioritize vehicle maintenance and leave a trip plan with someone. Having a well-equipped truck kit is essential for roadside emergencies, including spare tire, tire repair kit, compressor, axe, saw, shovel, and tow strap. Regularly review and organize all gear before the trip to ensure everything is functional and clean. Take care of your boots by greasing them with beeswax or boot grease, and avoid overheating them. Consider using paper maps in addition to digital maps for a better overview of the hunting area. Create a detailed packing list that includes food, day hunting kit, spike camp kit, base camp kit, clothing kit, meat care kit, personal kit, tech kit, and elk hunting gear. Leave a trip plan with a responsible person who can take action if you don't check in. Use the Splitwise app to track expenses and split costs among the hunting group. Today's episode has the perfect representation of what a dinner table conversation with our friends would look like when discussing money. So luckily, we are joined by the dinner club queen herself, Sophie McIntyre, founder of Club Sup. Through the three courses of this episode, we share our money stories, and discuss whether the concept of "treating yourself" is problematic. We delve into navigating money with housemates and friends, and what is and isn't appropriate to add to Splitwise. And finally for dessert, we chat about being a founder and how to think about paying yourself, whilst also keeping a business afloat. But the conversation doesn't end here... we want your thoughts!Do you think the concept of 'treating yourself' is problematic? How do the Splitwise politics work in your household?Have you experienced issues in a friendship because of money? Welcome to #Millennial, the home of pretend adulting and real talk! After a few years of explosive growth, the podcast world seems to be cooling off. What does this mean for indie podcasters? As big corporations come to grips with the reality that podcasting isn't just an easy way to print money, layoffs, budget cuts, and canceled projects are making headlines. What do we look for in the podcasts we listen to as podcasters ourselves? If there's passion behind the project, it shows. Lucky Girl Syndrome is the new manifesting. Who knew when boomers were simping over 'The Secret' that the youths would revive the concept. Is there some validity to the idea of manifesting positivity? How has Andrew done this to keep himself from assuming the worst possible thing will happen? The Confessional makes its triumphant return this week with a listener who is playing hooky from work to get some much-needed self-care time. The hosts and listeners share some great tips for helping to carve out some time to prioritize yourself during your regular day-to-day: give yourself an easy "out" for certain social situations, stop saying yes to everything, and pad time in your calendar around busy events to give yourself some breathing room! Don't forget to check out our Facebook group for more great conversations like this. This week's recommendations will make life easier, more fun, and enriching! The Plates by Splitwise app, and the parent Splitwise app (Listener Beth and Andrew), Golf With Friends (Laura), and "Sorrow and Bliss" by Meg Mason (Pam). And in this week's installment of After Dark, available on Patreon and Apple Podcasts: The Hill reports that parents pay at least one monthly bill for 40% of millennials, prompting us to explore how our parents helped us in early adulthood. How all three of the hosts got booted off their parents' car insurance - should people be worried about us on the road? Andrew recalls his "Most Expensive Date Ever" We also revisit some cringe moments from our adolescent years. Awkward!

It always annoys me when I'm in a queue at a cafe or takeaway and a group of people in front of me, who're together, all want to pay separately. Technology should make this a thing of the past. Check the app store for ‘bill splitter' apps. There are dozens to choose from including KittySplit, Splitwise and Billzer. Some are best suited to situations where you're out and about - there are others, such as CountCalculate which are aimed more at groups of people living together, paying a share of a bill - for example energy bills or broadband. Some can even calculate who owes what based on how much they earn, so those with the highest income pay the most. This week's episode of the DevEd podcast is joined by Hudson Baker. Hudson has been a developer for five years now, specializing in Angular, and is currently working at BrieBug Software. The panel kickstarts the episode by answering the basic question - What is Gatsby? Sam explains that it is a static site generator which means that it takes in data and converts that into static files that can be hosted on any server. It has a lot of tooling and build process stuff built-in, and uses modern javascript concepts along with GraphQL to build fast-performance static sites. It is also a part of JAMStack. Speaking on what languages and technologies it is based on, Sam elaborates that Gatsby is built with React, the build process is webpack, the content can be written in markdown or any outside sources, and data querying is done using GraphQL. The next topic of discussion is static sites. They talk at length about what static sites are, if they can be written without a static site generator, the difference between Gatsby and other frameworks such as Angular and React, what makes the sites static, how to identify them, and how to make a clear distinction between static and dynamic sites. Next, they discuss that Gatsby can be a good starting point for people interested in learning React because it has a plethora of cool inbuilt tools, plugins and pre-packaged templates which can make the learning process easier, rather than starting to learn React from scratch. From a teaching perspective, React is a better choice if the goal is to teach web applications, whereas Gatsby is good for teaching how to build websites. They talk about the difference between Gatsby and server-side rendering frameworks such as Next.js. Luis explains that in server-side rendering, there is data on one side and template on the other, and each time a request is made to the server, the data and template are assembled on the fly and not at build time. On the contrary, in case of Gatsby, this is done at build time, so everything that is sent from the server is basically pre-calculated. Talking about performance considerations, he says that in server-side rendering there is a price to pay in terms of just-in-time calculations. Sam also chimes in with his views on the comparison and mentions that they are really close performance-wise and feature-wise. They then move on to discussing the learning aspect of Gatsby. Sam explains that if developers possess some knowledge about things like React, GraphQL, CSS in JS, etc., it can be easy to get fast results with Gatsby, however, it is still possible to secure some quick wins by using a simple starter project as a template and building on it. He then talks about the best use of Gatsby being in content-based sites, portfolios, product sales pages and so on. Joe asks how does Gatsby deal with adding other aspects on top of it, to which Sam answers that there may be some tweaking needed to get things done, but overall it works well given that there are a ton of plugins available to get things from external resources. Joe talks about learning GraphQL, and Sam explains how much of it is used in Gatsby. He talks about the positives of Gatsby documentation and the developer community. They end the show with picks. Vale a pena.

This episode of the podcast is about my guide to first-time travel. I'm going to run trough my guides for what to do before you leave, what to pack, how to take better photos, and how to preserve your memories. The first thing I want to talk about is things to do before you go to make your trip better:Buy travel insurance. If I have medical or scheduling issues while abroad, this will cover it.Submit a travel notice for your credit cards and bank. Sometimes, they will cut off your cards if you don't do this.Make sure you backup everything on your phone and laptop.I like to download some of my songs on Spotify so that they can be listened to offline while on the plane (I do this with movies on Netflix too).Load up your books on Kindle. I like to read books about where I'm going to visit. Check your passport and make sure it is valid for at least six months after your trip is over.Check your credit and debit card expirations and order new ones if you need to.Read the Wikipedia pages for the country you're travelling in and the city you're arriving in.Look into necessary immunizations.Look up directions from the airport to your accommodation and screenshot it.Rearrange a taxi from the airport beforehand or get an idea of how much it should cost.Have accommodations booked for at least the first night.Bring the right bag. It's better to bring too little than too much.Build your travel wallet. The cards you carry should be a bit different than the ones you use at home.Email a friend or family member a copy of your passport, US embassy information, and details about where you're staying.Walk with your hands in your pockets so you don't get pickpocketed.Apps to download: Splitwise, an offline translator, a currency exchange calculator, an offline map, Agoda, Airbnb, Orbitz, and Hostelworld. Now I'm going to jump into my packing list:For clothes: socks, underwear, boardshorts, workout shorts, tank tops, one pair of regular shorts, one pair of jeans, T-shirts, a sweatshirt, sandals, and one pair of shoes.A portable speaker, a GoPro, a Kindle, a backup phone charger, a travel adapter, and two sets of headphones.Medicine such as painkillers, stomach meds, bandages, etc.A rain jacket is nice to have.A refillable water bottle (if you're in a country where the tap water is drinkable).Carabiners and zip ties.A combination lock.Earplugs and an eye mask to make it easy to sleeps on planes, trains, etc.A pen for filling our immigration documents.A clothespin to open up my SIM card.Laptop and charger, of course.A notebook.A mini flashlight.A second pair of sunglasses that you don't mind losing can be handy for parties.Snacks for the plane. In most countries you can replace anything that you're forgotten, so the pressure's not too high.Next, I want to talk about taking photos. There are three things you need to learn to make your travel photography much better:The rule of thirds. If you were to cut the picture up into thirds, don't put the person in the middle section. This way, you get to see more of the landscape and get a better composition.Learn to tap your phone to get focus. That's simple.Make sure to shoot your videos in widescreen, except when you plan to share them on Instagram or Snapchat.Next, journaling is a way to organize memories in a way that you'll really appreciate. Take ten minutes every day to write down what you did. Travel is going to bri
