HEAVY Music Interviews
Musical Pathways With SARAH McLEOD From THE SUPERJESUS

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 17, 2025 18:50

Interview by Kris PetersThe Superjesus have been a mainstay on the Australian rock scene for more than three decades.Their infectious music coupled with arguably one of the best live shows in the country have endeared the band to generations of music lovers since their inception in the late 1990s, with the band's debut album Sumo in 1998 spawning fan favourites such as Down Again, Saturation and Now and Then. The follow-up, Jet Age, magnified the growing popularity of The Superjesus, delivering the smash hit Gravity as well as Secret Agent Man before Rock Music rounded out the trifecta in 2003.A brief hiatus from the mid 2000s gave the band members time to reflect on their personal music ambitions before deciding the world needed more of their music in 2013. This produced an EP, Love and Violence (2016), as well as a double live album but despite The Superjesus quickly reclaiming their status amongst Australia's elite touring band's, no new music has been forthcoming. That changes this Friday, March 21, when The Superjesus (self-titled) comes out, fuelled by the success of six previous singles Money (We're Only In It For Love), Lights Out, We Won't Let Go Until It's Over, Something Good, a cover of Generation X's Dancing With Myself and beautiful ballad Diamonds. This is the new Superjesus, a more soulful, engaging version of the band we know and love where song writing is king.HEAVY caught up with frontwoman Sarah McLeod to find out more. We bring up a quote she made to HEAVY in October last year where she proclaimed "I shit you not, but it's the best stuff we've ever written", and ask if she still feels that way after the album has had more time to digest. A smile swept across her face before replying with a simple "yeah"."I guess maybe that's why I love it so much," she continued, "because I'm so connected to it. And I just feel like we've got better. I feel like we did a great job in the 90s, and we were happy with those records, but we had 10 years off, and we all went and did different music. We learnt stuff. Ruddy (Stuart, bass) was in all these different bands, and he came back with a whole library of new influences and so did I. And we're like, okay, we're the same people, but we're not really because we've learnt all this stuff. So why don't we bring in the cool shit that we've learned and make something different, but paying homage to who we were. And that's where we're at. And I think it's been really good for us. And I love it."In the full interview, Sarah expressed her excitement about the album, which has seen the release of six singles over the past 18 months. She highlighted her favourite track, Gangbusters, and explained the strategic decision to hold back some songs to build anticipation. She emphasized that while there is no external pressure, she feels a personal drive to deliver quality music, reflecting the band's evolution and commitment to their craft.Sarah shared insights into her songwriting process, noting a shift towards creating cohesive narratives rather than standalone lyrics. She discussed the challenges of balancing her solo work with that of The Superjesus, particularly in terms of lyrical content and audience resonance. The conversation also touched on the creative process, where Sarah likened songwriting to an alchemical journey that requires refinement to achieve simplicity. She said she believes that effective songs often stem from straightforward lyrics that engage audiences, a principle she strives to uphold in her work. We discussed the band's upcoming tour and what to expect musically, as well as the opportunity for local band's to open in each city and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Making Sense of Billy Idol - Ep. 52

Is Billy Idol a couple of hits and not much else? Is his career more than the peak "Rebel Yell", "White Wedding", and "Dancing With Myself"? Surprises?  I found some. The hits?  Fewer than you might think. He did have four top ten songs, but even they aren't what you might think initially.  But he had some tunes that weren't big but did rock. We dig into a couple of those. Was he a pioneer in blending punk attitude with mainstream rock and pop appeal, bringing a sneering, rebellious edge of punk to MTV?  Or was he a jump-on-the-bandwagon pop-punker? Some might argue that his music was more about style and image than deep artistic innovation, especially compared to more groundbreaking punk and new wave artists. If someone values raw, underground punk over polished rock, they might see him as more of a commercialized version of the genre. I'm not so sure. Embrace the sneer.  Let's go. ------- email: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com website: www.rockpopandroll.com

Vanessa Fraction and Kenice Mobley visit Friends Like Us and argue wether they would stop for a white baby, late at night, on an Alabama road and more with host Marina Franklin!  Vanessa Fraction  is the high-spirited, outrageously funny co-host of Nappy Boy Radio Podcast hosted by rapper and producer T-Pain. She also guest hosts on the entertainment news television series Dish Nation (FOX) and can be seen in Universal Pictures' cinematic musical, Praise This written and directed by Tina Gordon, produced by Will Packer, Tim Story, James Lopez, and Sharla Sumpter. From her unique brand of comedy that's both witty and unapologetically honest, Fraction's hilarious stand-up sets never fail to deliver sharp commentary on everyday life, relationships, and the struggles of being a successful black woman. Her ability to effortlessly weave these topics into a cohesive storyline that perfectly illustrates her point is what makes her stand out from other comics. Fraction's comedy is relatable and incredibly funny, with an edge that allows her to push boundaries. She's the kind of comedian who will make you laugh until your face hurts while making you think about the issues at hand. With a storied history of industry wins, Fraction was an analyst for the Comedy Hype News show and periodic face on Windy City Live (Chicago), she is also a recurring favorite as a crowd warmer for numerous shows, including Dancing With Myself, America's Got Talent: Extreme, Black Girls Rock, The Soul Train Awards, BET Her: Fights Breast Cancer, Sunday's Best and The Ms. Pat Show. As an actress, Fraction's appearances in television and film also include Last Call (Bounce TV), Comedy Knockout (truTV), Tales (BET), a returning role on Bounce TV's Mann and Wife, Kim Field's Holiday Love: The Rebirth (TV One), Kevin Hart's Celebrity Game Face (E!), and the lighthearted comedy Squatter's Rights.  From Def Comedy Jam (HBO) to NickMom Night Out (Nick Jr.) to Laff Mobb's Laff Tracks (truTV), 1st Amendment Standup (STARZ), Mike Epps Live at Club Nokia, Just for Laughs Montreal Festival (2008, 2018), and Just For Laughs Chicago (2013), Fraction's bold and clever stand-up has been a welcomed highlight on these and other showcases. The demand for her comedic brilliance has garnered opportunities to perform abroad touring the UK and performing for the U.S. troops in Germany, Japan, and South Korea. After performing on The Monique Show, a year later she was offered her first writing gig. Fraction's versatility as a writer blossomed on shows like Raven's Home (Disney), The Arsenio Hall Show (CBS), the Triumph Awards (Bounce TV), and 106 & Park (BET). Fraction's passionate take on women's freedoms and rights to empowerment stretches beyond the stage. She is a certified self-defense instructor, and her branded style of teaching, Kicks & Comedy, equips women with life-saving self-defense skills and lifts spirits by infusing comedy. Vanessa's mission is to empower her audience to overcome their struggles while laughing at hers. Did the artists make MTV, or did MTV make the artists?  There is no doubt about the complementary relationship between the then-new music video channel and rocker Billy Idol.  He had exploded on the scene with his debut solo album featuring hits such as "White Wedding" and "Dancing With Myself."  His popularity would continue with his second studio album, Rebel Yell.  Born as William Michael Albert Broad, Billy Idol found his studio name in a schoolteacher's derogatory description of him as "idle."  Billy Idol got his start in the punk scene.  He started performing with a retro-rock band called Chelsea in 1976, but quit after a few weeks to co-found a punk band called Generation X.  While the music was punk, the image Idol created was more 1950's Elvis-styled rocker with a dash of glam rock thrown in.  Billy Idol was a prominent member of the "second British invasion" on MTV in the early 80's, and would see mainstream success with Rebel Yell.  Singles like the title track and "Eyes Without a Face" got heavy airplay on rock stations in the US.  Idol's iconic look and "whiplash smile" was especially appealing to the new media of music videos shown prominently on MTV but also on other stations both on cable TV and the airwaves.  If you enjoyed music videos back in the day, this episode will leave you saying "more, more more!" Daytime DramaThis slower and deeper cut was the second track on the album and was not released as a single.  It compares life and relationships to a soap opera.  "Beautiful star of my daytime drama...you're my hope for a future."Blue HighwayA faster rocking song, this track was also not released as a single.  However it was the B-side to the single "Flesh for Fantasy," and it did get significant airplay on rock stations at the time.Flesh for FantasyThis track was the third single from the album and a significant hit, peaking at 29 on Billboard's Hot 100.  It is heavily produced, and while a rock song it also was played in dance clubs as well.  "Face to face and back to back, you see and feel my sex attack.  Sing it!"Catch My FallPerhaps less popular than other album singles, this was the fourth single from the album.  It has a new wave feel as well, and continues to have a dance beat. The saxophone is played by Mars Williams.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:"Bob's Major Award" (from the motion picture “A Christmas Story")This now-classic Christmas movie was surprisingly not that successful as a first run movie in 1983.  This song gets its title from the "leg lamp." STAFF PICKS:“The Safety Dance” by Men Without HatsRob's staff pick spent 4 weeks at number 3 on Billboard's hot 100, and was another big hit from MTV.  The song was meant to be a statement about people "pogoing" - flailing around on the dance floor in a way that could cause people to get hurt.“Mean Streak” by Y&TWayne features a heavy metal song from a group originally known as "Yesterday & Today."  Y&T formed in 1974 in Oakland, and opened for a number of bands like Wild Cherry and Kiss.  The lead singer is still performing with the group, but unfortunately all other members have died.  Lars of Metallica credits Y&T with inspiring him to become a musician.“Mama” by GenesisBruce's staff pick is the opening track to Genesis' self-titled album.  This dark song is about a young man with a mother fixation towards an older prostitute.  Mike Rutherford wrote the electric drum machine parts that start the song and continue throughout the piece.“This Time” by Bryan AdamsBrian closes out the staff picks with the lead track from Adam's "Cuts Like a Knife" album.  Bryan Adams was another beneficiary of MTV's influence, and this album was his breakthrough hit.   LAUGH TRACK:Jim Carrey premieres on Johnny CarsonThis month marked the first time Canadian Jim Carrey appeared on American television on "The Tonight Show."  He would go on several years later to fame after his stint on the television show "In Living Color"

"Kings And Queens Of The Underground" is his first album in nine years, yet it is accompanied by an entertaining memoir called "Dancing With Myself" and contains lots of references to both - a turbulent career and a hedonistic lifestyle full of debauchery, motorcycles and girls, which he maintains to this very day. Mind you: At 58 the former punk rock kid is still an alcoholic, a junkie and a sex-addict (as he describes himself), and he is very open about it. That´s what makes this interview so unique and special.

Diet Coke® is a Registered Trademark of The Coca-Cola Company. 2. Billy Idol "Dancing With Myself"* *"Dancing with Myself" is a punk rock song written by singer Billy Idol and bassist Tony James, and first recorded by their band Generation X. The song was first released as a single and a 12" in 1980 and, a few weeks after the single release, was included on the band's last album—1981's Kiss Me Deadly. It would become one of the group's most well-known songs, but had limited success in its initial release. In 1981, Idol remixed and re-released "Dancing with Myself" as a solo single, toning down its aggressive guitar sound and instead emphasizing its power pop or pop rock elements. Two versions were issued—the 3:20 single version (which was later included on Idol's 11 of the Best compilation), and the 4:50 extended version that appeared on Idol's Don't Stop EP. Idol plays "Dancing with Myself" at most of his concerts, always introducing the song as having been originally written and recorded by Generation X. Since its release, the song has become something of a sports anthem.

Trend Following with Michael Covel

How is trend following a bit like the Billy Idol song, "Dancing With Myself"? Michael Covel explains the importance of maintaining an independent spirit, feeling comfortable standing alone and outside the crowd and being your own self. Covel contrasts this to the famous scene in "American Psycho" where a group of executives compare the card stock and fancy presentation of their business cards trying to impress one another. That's the complete opposite of what "Dancing With Myself" gets at. Worry about yourself, not the crowd. Covel then quotes hedge fund manager Hugh Hendry. Hendry holds himself out in public as coming from a fundamental perspective, even though his hero is trend trader Bruce Kovner, who was trained by Michael Marcus, who was trained by Ed Seykota (all trend following traders). You get the picture. Hendry honestly states that he doesn't know what's going to happen, but he puts himself in the position to have probabilistic bets that can profit when the market moves--in whatever direction. Covel moves on to quote David Einhorn, a hedge fund manager. What will the Fed do if the bubble bursts when interest rates are at zero? Is Covel, in quoting Einhorn, trying to predict the future by talking about this subject? He's simply mapping out what he sees: A world that's rigged and manipulated, and a Federal Reserve that's trying to make its buddies at the big banks wealthy. In the midst of this how can you protect yourself and profit? The only way you can truly protect yourself is by looking at the price in the here and now from a trend following perspective. You can make decisions based on the price movement without having any idea what the Fed is doing behind the curtain. There is no certainty. There's only chaos, uncertainty, fractures, and cracks in the sidewalk. You have to have a plan before that fracture breaks. Although traders like Einhorn, Hendry, and John Hussman might not be trend following traders themselves, their observations certainly make the case for employing a trend following strategy.
