This episode featuring Tom Meny originally aired in June 2019. This is a rewind edition, in which I've edited the conversation to be more succinct and somewhat more relevant. Tom has appeared in two episodes of this podcast. In his first appearance, Tom and I spoke about house concerts. This was the beginning of my interest in house concerts and as fate would have it, I was able to do my first in February 2020. You know what happened in March of that year. You may, or may not, know that I've relocated since then and am thus reestablishing myself in a new music community. As such, I hope to do more house concerts soon. Since this podcast first began, episodes have been more heavily edited, offering you a better listening experience. In the early days, I had an attitude of low / no editing. If you go back and listen to the original version of this episode, you'll notice the difference. In any case, I hope you'll enjoy this Rewind edition of my conversation with Tom Meny. In this conversation, Tom and I talk about the Austin music scene, the Singer Songwriter With Tom Meny podcast, rejection, writers' slump, songwriting groups, songwriting advice from Cindi Lauper and Shannon Curtis, email marketing, getting paid, and more. Here she opens up about her hopes for hospitality into the future, how she landed her plum role at Rosewood, and how in this "fourth quarter" of her career she is living out the dream she had for herself at 10 years of age. Poynder says she never would have achieved that dream if it wasn't for three different mentors who helped her maintain her self belief along the way. She is also a believer in teams, and has held positions including General Manager at The Conrad New York Downtown and General Manager of The Waldorf Astoria in Chicago. The Carlyle is one of the world's most prestigious city hotels with a celebrity history spanning decades. It is brimming with artworks, is itself a catalogue of design history and has always been live with the sound of some of America's best musicians at The Cafe Carlyle within the hotel, which opened in 1947, 16 years after the hotel opened. Bono, Cindi Lauper, Mariah Carey, Billy Joel, John Mayer, Bill Murray and Liza Minelli are just a few who have given impromptu performances at the piano in legendary Bemelmans Bar. The Carlyle became a favourite of Hollywood stars after Ingrid Bergman first stayed there when she filmed Intermezzo. It has captivated the well heeled and the well educated for years and was where Jacqueline Onassis met Audrey Hepburn, and the hotel has appeared in Sex And The City, Gossip Girl, HBO's Girls and Bravo's Younger, and the movie "A Very Murray Christmas" starring Bill Murray was entirely filmed at the hotel. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge stayed there during their first visit to New York. The hotel produces over 1200 monogrammed pillow cases each year for guests, and Hubert De Givenchy once owned an apartment there, and during the Kennedy administration the hotel's owner Robert Dowling kept the "Kennedy Duplex" empty in case the president ever wanted to stay. The result is a look is both sophisticated and sexy, with the drape and cut of gorgeous fabrics that always look fresh.    In this episode, she tells our Holly that her creations stem from art, her travels, and popular culture combine in unique prints and imaginative uses of color throughout her designs.    Innovation, too, finds its way into her work; she has often been the first to popularize a new technique or fabric, including sustainable fabrics such as denim made from recycled bottle caps and plant-based materials.    Nicole attended the Rhode Island School of Design and earned a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree in Apparel Design. For a year, she studied at L'Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne.    There she learned the art of fabric drapery and classical method of dressmaking. She has previously described the training sessions as “intense,” but the course gave much help in fabric manipulation, which soon became her signature style in her designs. Her outfits have been worn by Beyoncé Knowles, Angelica Huston, LeAnn Rimes, Jennifer Stone, Eva Longoria, Susan Sarandon, Brooke Shields, Angelina Jolie, Lauren Hutton, Cindi Lauper and Sheryl Crow, among others.   “Nicole's vision is to create sustainable, accessible luxury and premium fashion and lifestyle products for eco-conscious, empowered women and their families who want to look their best, feel good about their consumer choices, and participate in making the world a better place.”   THE BRAND: The Nicole Miller brand is a global fashion and lifestyle brand headquartered in New York City. Known for her skillful draping and unique detailing, Nicole Miller designs every piece for the woman who wants to look and feel her best.”   In addition to its contemporary womenswear lines, the company has partnered with leading licensees in numerous lifestyle categories including handbags, shoes, jewelry, eyewear, denim, activewear, sleepwear, kids, fragrance and beauty, and home, among others, and can now be found online and in over 1500 specialty and department stores worldwide.   The Interview: Fresh off Hamptons Fashion Week 2022, where she was celebrated and honored as one of America's most highly regarded fashion icons for 40 years, Nicole Miller graces our podcast with her wit and wisdom regarding all things fashion!   From her deep American roots, to earning her degree at the Rhode Island Institute of Design and studying design in Paris, Holly uncovers all sorts of fascinating facts and insights about Nicole that most people would never know – all of which have blended to be Nicole's secret to fashion design success.   She is a force to be reckoned with; her signature style has traditionally been bold colors or black – with interesting cuts on clothes.    Her key concern has always been necklines, curves and proportion, with designs that are considered classic and sexy at the same time.    She creates cocktail dresses, lounge wear, wedding clothes and form-flattering gowns. She draws inspiration from a number of sources including contemporary art, cinema, 20th century cultures and architecture.   Nicole is first and foremost an artist and designer; she is also a skiier both on snow and the water. This outdoorsy and slightly competitive element is perhaps just one of the millions of layers that feed her enormous creativity. She also loves to cook and, of course, travel.   Listen to this episode to learn more:   From her start in the fashion industry to today, how has she been able to successfully manage and evolve her brand for 40 years?  What is Nicole Miller working on now? What does she see trending now? What fashion trend does she enjoy? What annoys her?  From owning brick-and-mortar stores all over the country to conducting online sales, how has she navigated running her company and kept up with sales trends? How was she able to expand to her brand into eyewear, jewelry, shoes, makeup, perfume, home goods - and now - a Rose'?  What is her favorite thing to wear? What does she do for fun? For inspiration?  What is next for Nicole Miller the brand?    For those of us who grew up with Nicole Miller, to anyone just discovering this marketing maven here, this intimate conversation is a fun and fascinating insider's look at the world of fashion and a legendary designer.    And you can only get it here.   FASHION CRIMES PODCAST “The Best Fashion Friend You Never Knew You Needed”   Hosted by your favorite personal stylist, Holly Katz. www.fashioncrimespodcast.com

Pod-Bucks are how Phil and Jake get paid for making this podcast. A Pod-Buck is kind of like a No-Prize but without the envelope. Actors that we discuss include Tom Berenger, Ellen Barkin, Joe Pantoliano, James Franco, Michael Paré, Rick Springfield, Gary Oldman, Dan Aykroyd and Bob Saget. Many musical acts come up during the episode, such as Bruce Springsteen, Dion and the Belmonts, My Chemical Romance, Damaso Perez Prado, Aerosmith, Ice Cube, Spinderella, Bell Biv Devoe and Chris Gaines.  We talk about how The Doors were used as an inspiration for Eddie and the Cruisers, but we fail to draw the connection that there were also rumors about Jim Morrison faking his death. Songs discussed include  “On the Dark Side” by John Cafferty (which is from the movie), “Quarter to Three” by Gary U.S. Bonds (maybe Phil's favorite song of the 20th century), “Project Chick” by Cash Money Millionaires, “Kokomo” by the Beach Boys, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by Cindi Lauper and “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dione Warwick. Phil mentions a song from the movie called “Special Touch” but the actual name of the song is “Down On My Knees” (also by John Cafferty). Phil's right when he says it sounds like “Hurts So Good” by John Mellencamp. Other movies discussed include That Thing You Do!, West Is West, Streets of Fire, Jersey Boys, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Howard the Duck, Caddyshack, The Matrix, The Truman Show, Drumline, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Exorcist, All of Me, Ghost, Ghost Rider, Ghostbusters, Evil Dead 2, Repossessed, R.I.P.D., The Frighteners and of course Eddie and the Cruisers II: Eddie Lives! Streets of Rage is the arcade game Phil mentioned that uses the common trope of a power up of a whole roast chicken that makes the player regain his health. The Palace of Depression was a real place in Vineland, New Jersey. Jake claims that Eddie and the Cruisers used the actual site as a shooting location, though the internet implies that it was razed in 1969 so maybe the one from the movie was a recreation. Jake calls meals_by_cug a Jersey guy but it looks like he's from Staten Island. We refer to our episode featuring Dave Hause, in which we go over Dave's USA Today piece about Taylor Swift and master tapes. Here's the scene from The Simpsons where Bart tries to buy a novelty license plate. Brian WIlson had a nervous breakdown when he heard the Beatles' Revolver. Sleep paralysis is the worst. Jake cites Scottish folklore that attributes it to a witch sitting on your chest. We couldn't trace the story to Scotland, but we did discover the night hag, which isn't too far off the mark. We don't actually get into the movie, but Silverado is an 80s neo-traditional Western by Lawrence Kasdan with a stacked cast that Phil's never seen, and is the one movie that Phil will never be invited over to Jake's house to watch. The secret to writing and recording songs to completion is something that Marc Dold wants to share with all musicians. He is a songwriter, platinum-selling producer, Apple certified Logic Instructor and indie artist known as Mawk Phoenix. This is Marc's 3rd appearance on the podcast. Celebrating The Wins And Struggles Along The Way—Mawk Phoenix (Ep 131) Today's Indie Musician—Mawk Phoenix (Ep 165) Marc was living in Malta, but had relocated to nearby Gozo when we spoke for this episode. If you're like me you may need a clue as to where these places are. They are islands in the central Mediterranean between Sicily and the North African coast. Marc and I reconnected as he was finishing up a course called Musical Architects, which he describes as a practical workshop that teaches how to write, arrange, record, produce, mix and finalize a song. Marc has produced and re-mixed for more than 50 major artists such as Nelly Furtado, Luis Fonsi, Paul van Dyk, Peter Gabriel, En Vogue, Alice Cooper, Cindi Lauper, Luther Vandross, Erasure, and many more, leading to several top 5 Billboard Hits including 2 #1 Hits. Needless to say, he's qualified to teach you and me how to get it done. Topics of discussion… We talk a about his upcoming album and he asks me about my experience recording songs (my first two singles). Also discussed: Marc's Musical Architects course, getting stuck in the recording process, how he starts his days with deep work in mind, and house concerts. On the topic of Deep Work, Marc mentions a book he was then reading called Deep Work by Cal Newport. Since our conversation for this episode, I heard an interview with the author on the Tim Ferris Show, one of my favorite podcasts. I have since added Deep Work to my reading list. Cal Newport has his own podcast, which I'm now enjoying (link in the show notes below). Please enjoy this conversation with me and Marc Dold. The US had a healthy, diverse underground music scene in the ’80s. Among the goths, art-punks, and lo-fi freaks were plenty of rude boys and rude girls. And yet for some reason, the story of ska in the US is nearly wiped clean from the oral history of American music during the ’80s. You even had bands like Fishbone—who mostly played ska at the time—and The Untouchables signed to major labels! Not only are these ska stories an important piece of the musical landscape, but they also help explain how ska seemingly popped up out of nowhere in the mid-90s—it was bubbling just under the mainstream for a decade and a half. Our guest today, Marc Wasserman wrote the book Ska-Boom!: An American Ska & Reggae Oral History, which chronicles this lost decade of ska music. His book, which you can order here, is exhaustive in its research and plentiful in its interviews and tells the origin stories of several key US ska bands during the 80s—some familiar like The Toasters and Bim Skala Bim, some obscure like The Boilers and The Boxboys. His incredible book will show you not just that ska was popular during this time period, but that it was an amazing scene. In the episode, we talk to Marc about his book, which includes a mindboggling and short segment on Cindi Lauper’s debut album (It started ska!) And lots of other interesting, unlikely cameos by folks like Joni Mitchell and Tom Waits. We also talk about Marc’s musical projects, including his collaboration with Sal Polichetti, the guy that wrote and sang the viral hit, “Jesus is My Friend.” There was even talk of doing a split release with the evil ones themselves, Mephiskapheles. But that never happened. What a shame! If you enjoyed this episode, please share it. And sign up for my newsletter! Get on the email list at aaroncarnes.substack.com

Happy Labor Day! Or, as we say on the podcast, Merry Labor Day! Today is not the first song-turned-picture-book we've done on the show (that honor went to The Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night). However, it is most certainly the first (and quite possibly last) to include die-cuts. Kate wonders whether or not the "old lady" feels pissed off about being called "old" (as we attempt to sing "There was a spry lady who swallowed a fly") while Betsy launches into any number of tangents, like how gross flies are. One thing Kate and Betsy do agree on though: This woman is capable of unhinging her jaw. Awesome. Show Notes: Okay. Here is where the polling comes in. Kirk Fletcher discusses his blues guitar lessons available on TrueFire, performs, and answers questions. To learn more and watch the video from this live session, please visit truefire.com/live.About Kirk Fletcher: Kirk Fletcher has a reputation as a bonafide can’t-miss performer. His soulful playing and singing never fails to elicit chills, and his unique approach to Rhythm & Blues music is both refreshingly modern and completely authentic.Widely considered one of the best blues guitarists in the world, he has commanded the respect and acclaim of critics, peers and fans across the globe. He is a four-time Blues Music Award and a 2015 British Blues Award nominee and has played with a variety of popular artists, including Joe Bonamassa and a three-year role as lead guitarist of The Fabulous Thunderbirds. He released three studio albums and a live album. His new CD will be released in October 2018.EARLY YEARSKirk first picked up a guitar at age eight, playing alongside his older brother Walter in their father’s church. One day with his older brother, Kirk visited a small L.A. guitar shop, Music Works, which ultimately became his second home after meeting Jeff Rivera, Robben Ford’s guitar tech. “We started hanging out and I would help load gear, change strings and just be a fly on the wall to some of the most amazing music I’ve ever heard,” Kirk remembers.KIRK’S BLUESIt was in the next few years that Kirk’s full introduction to traditional blues occurred. He started seeking out other musicians who shared this same understanding – enter Al Blake, lead singer and harp player for the Hollywood Fats Band. After hosting dinner every Sunday, Al would offer Kirk early 20th Century blues records as dessert. He also helped establish connections to other famous West Coast blues artists like Junior Watson and Richard “Lynwood Slim” Duran. So followed Kirk’s first gigs as a blues guitarist and eventually the recording of his first album I’m Here & I’m Gone for the JSP label out of England.Al Blake would also introduce Kirk to Kim Wilson of The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Wilson brought Fletcher further into the blues family from California to Texas and then out touring the world. One highlight during this time was at Antone’s Night Club 25th Anniversary Week in Austin, Texas, which gave Kirk the opportunity to perform with his blues heroes Pinetop Perkins, James Cotton and Hubert Sumlin. Wilson also tapped Kirk to play on his Grammy-nominated Smokin’ Joint live album. Shortly thereafter a call to collaborate came from blues legend Charlie Musselwhite, confirming that Kirk was becoming one of the most in-demand blues guitarists on the scene.HIS TURNSo began three years on the road with the Thunderbirds. Kirk contributed to the Thunderbirds’ Paint It On album and time spent with many famous blues artists along the way, including a brief stint with the late Doyle Bramhall Sr. and a few guest appearances playing for Cindi Lauper, Michelle Branch and a world tour with Italian mega-star Eros Ramazzotti. Kirk more recently has been part of two projects with close friend Joe Bonamassa Muddy Wolf at Redrocks and the Grammy nominated Live at the Greek Theatre.

"You with those sad eyes, don't be discouraged" Cindi Lauper, True Colors. This special episode was recorded on location at a retreat I was speaking at for people with disabilities. So the audio quality is not the typical Happy Life Studios quality but definitely worth listening to. God spoke the worlds in to existence, but you He made by hand. In fact, "if God had to choose between all the stars, the Grand Canyon, oceans and galaxies and you? He wouldn't even think for a second. He would pick you over those things in a heartbeat!" God made us to laugh, not to be guilty. He made us to be free. To be Happy. What the world needs, is for us to be us in our purest form. For us to let our true colors, the ones God made in us, to show..."like a rainbow". Special thanks To Ian Anderson for the use of his song "Slow" as well as Cindi Lauper and Justin Timberlake for "True Colors". www.HappyLife.lol Facebook.com/HappyLifeStudios Twitter.com/HappyLifStudios Instagram.com/HappyLife_Studios PayPal.me/StevoHays

David Rosenthal ’81: Music director and keyboardist for the Piano Man for 23 Years and counting By Curtis Killian During a recent artist residency at his alma mater, David Rosenthal ’81, Billy Joel’s music director and keyboardist since 1993, described his prodigious career as “a fun and exciting journey.” He wasn’t exaggerating. On the most recent leg of that odyssey, Rosenthal is booked for indefinite sold-out shows with Billy Joel in a first-of-its-kind residency at Madison Square Garden. Thus far there have been 26 monthly engagements at the fabled venue, which Rosenthal says will continue as long as there is a demand. “It’s just remarkable, the enthusiasm of the New York fans for Billy,” Rosenthal says. “Worldwide he has that incredible appeal, but particularly in New York he has that home advantage.” Notably, Joel and Rosenthal will also play at Fenway Park in August for the third summer in a row, and Joel’s sold-out debut gig at Wembley Stadium in September. Of his role as music director and the unique arena residency, Rosenthal notes, “It’s a lot of preparedness. No two shows with him are identical.” The arena residency offers Joel the chance to perform his lesser-known tunes in addition to the hits fans expect. In preparation, Rosenthal says he has keyboard sounds programmed for about 85 songs. Rosenthal arrived at Berklee during the late 1970s as a classically trained pianist. He formed a band with fellow student Steve Vai ’79, a collaboration that has continued throughout their careers and is documented on several albums. “Everybody knew he was a great player,” Rosenthal says of Vai. “We played a lot of different things, and I believe it was Steve’s tape of our band that got [him his] audition with Frank Zappa. He’s a remarkable talent and [we] have remained great friends.” That relationship and others were an added benefit to Rosenthal from his Berklee years. Rosenthal’s first venture after graduating was a successful audition to replace keyboardist Don Airey in guitarist Richie Blackmore’s band Rainbow. It extended through two world tours and two albums, and was followed by tours with Little Steven, Cindi Lauper, Robert Palmer, and Enrique Iglesias as well as studio work with an array of artists. In addition to these gigs and his long-term work with Joel, Rosenthal has manned the keyboards with progressive stalwarts Happy the Man, orchestrated a concerto for Yngwie Malmsteem, and done synth programming for Bruce Springsteen. During a recent Berklee visit hosted by the Electronic Production and Design Department and the Office of Alumni Affairs, Rosenthal gave clinics on designing and playing a touring keyboard rig, the application of Apple’s Main Stage, and the role of the music director. “It’s fascinating, I’m on the cutting edge of technology now, but every piece of gear I use now did not exist while I was at Berklee,” he says. “But what I was fortunate to receive in my education here was all the concepts of how things work, and that enabled me to adapt to whatever technologies came along after I left. “I really love doing all types of projects [stylistically and musically], but [also enjoy] projects as synth programmer, orchestrator or producer,” Rosenthal says. “There are a lot of things I’ve been fortunate to do throughout all of my career, so far it’s been a good run.” Curtis Killian is a web content producer for Berklee’s Office of Alumni Affairs.

Marla Fibish and Bruce Victor are Noctambule and they play original and traditional music  rendered with lush beauty, sensitivity and humor on an unusual array of strings  -- various guitars in varied tunings, mandola, mandolin, bouzouki, cittern, tenor guitar -- and their blended voices. They take the name Noctambule, French for 'night-owl,’ from a Robert Service poem about a nocturnal ramble through the back alleys of Paris.  Much of their music is poetry set to music and some songs are traditional reels and waltzes.  The first album, Travel In Shadows won critical acclaim and  they have recently released a second album,  The Waking, once again, setting poetry to music and we look forward to talking with both of them this Friday. Lori Jean has the life experience to sing songs of life and the voice to do it.  Living with head damage from abuse as a  toddler and then later as an adult, she never lost her desire to sing.  In fact, her first words were “mommy, please play a  record”.  She skipped high school to write lyrics, formed a child sibling band, and followed her star – often led by inspiration from Stevie Nicks, The Pretenders and Cindi Lauper.  Her first album, Love of a Child, was recorded with French pop singer Ned Euphorya . Her next single, “Super Lady” is due for release in 2016, but we have it here.  All of her music is dedicated to stopping the kind of domestic violence she suffered, especially to teens. She joins us tghis Friday wsith her story and her songs.
