My guest today is Garrett Peek. Garrett is a Team Lead in Garmin Labs working on disruptive product innovation. He is responsible for guiding the research, design, development, launch and growth of new products with hundreds of millions of enthusiastic customers.. Before joining Garmin, Garrett cofounded several startups and worked for Zynga after the acquisition of OMGPOP, where he designed the hit mobile game Draw Something. As you'll hear in this conversation, Garrett's career has been a wild ride. I can tell you now that things didn't always go according to plan. From a young age, he was known for his building and creating, whether it be lego or painting. He spent a lot of time thinking how he might be able to use or apply these skills in the ‘'real'' world. After graduating, Garret decided he wanted to move to Boston to be closer to a friend, but after 28 job applications, 1 response and no job offers, he had to reassess. This didn't last for long, as before he knew it he struck lucky and was helping put together pitches for Super Bowl commercials. Garrett talked about how the moment you realize that you're hitting your comfort zone, is the moment you're prime for disruption - I loved this! Garrett discusses the common themes to success throughout his career, which he says come down to three things: 1- what teams would I be useful on, 2- how do I make myself indispensable, and 3- what is FUN to me. He's also pretty good at reading the room, but I'll let him tell you that story. Garret also highlights the importance of interviewing the company, as well as being interviewed by them. Have you ever asked what you are going in to solve during an interview? Like most of our guests, Garrett didn't have a plan and only now, looking back retrospectively, has he been able to connect the dots! I think this episode is sure to become a fan favorite! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ann-hiatt/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ann-hiatt/support

On this episode, we look back on our quest to draw something for seven days! What a ride that was! We actually ended up discussing more about art and how we approach it than we expected to. It was fun to dive into all the nuance around artists and how they create what they do. I know for sure we all came out having learned a thing or two about our own creative pursuits. Jacob was unable to be with us this episode because he's busy off hunting jackalope in Ohio. We'll be glad to have him back next week! Our next quest, should you choose to accept it: No screens one hour before bed! That's right! Put that phone down, stop playing video games, and get your head right for one hour before you go to sleep. We realize not everyone has a set bedtime, so in that case just do your best to predict your sleepytime and cut out stimulating entertainment before then. We look forward to hearing about your plans and strategies in Discord or by sending an email to dearsidequests@gmail.com Up next! Do we clean a park or get driven 2 miles away and have to find our way back home? It's up to you! GO VOTE!

Social PR Secrets: public relations podcast for entrepreneurs by Lisa Buyer
Creative technologies, such as virtual reality, have the incredible potential of building community. But how does it work exactly? And what can technology bring to the table that other mediums cannot? In this new episode of the Social PR Secrets Podcast, host Lisa Buyer talks to Paige Dansinger about her virtual museums and efforts to bring communities together through art and technology. They also explore how PR can disseminate these efforts into the world. From games to virtual museums Paige started her career in the art industry, at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. When she quit her job, she knew she wanted to work with creative technologies, reaching new museum audiences through her phone. She didn’t know what that would look like but she embraced the challenge. Inspired by the popular mobile phone game Draw Something, she started posting re-creation of artworks on social media. As big museums noticed and invited her to speak at big-name events, she knew she had a concept. Yet, she was still unable to tackle hard subjects such as war or social justice. For that, she needed a community. Slowly, through various opportunities, she got to understand the potential of art, social media, and VR to build connections. What even is a virtual museum? She founded Better World Museum to create resilient individuals, groups, & communities. For example, when she brought the museum to domestic abuse survivors, the victims bonded and connected through drawing. The shared experience of creating together creates a connection, she says. Eventually, Paige took the museum around the world. As she discovered VR technology, she also understood she could use it to bring people from all around the world together. She created a flower garden people could add to from anywhere. As she traveled around the world, over 4,000 people drew in the garden in the span of 3 months. The pop-up format allowed her to create a mini-moving museum. But thankfully, as the COVID-19 pandemic started, Paige had already experimented with VR enough that she was able to thrive on virtual-only. Creating community Paige Dansinger also created the Horizon Museum, where people recreate artworks in VR. Visitors (who thus become artists) can perform via audio sharing buttons and are integral parts of the museum. They even get compensated for their participation. Paige also hosted a pizza party, which brought an intergenerational crowd for a night of fun and connection. Her two museums allowed Paige to bring communities together during a time of crisis. Interestingly enough, Paige’s PR efforts are directly reliant on her community. While she spends significant efforts on creating her brand, she lets the community share her work while exemplifying their voices. Her main visibility strategy? Creativity. “My mission is to build creative technologies to build resilience” - Paige Dansinger Some topics discussed in this episode include:

Continuing the December theme of speaking with devs who made some of my favourite games of 2016, I'm joined this week by Jonathan Burroughs, one of the creators of Virgina and co-founder of Variable State. The team have recently been nominated for Writer's Guild of Great Britain award for the writing in the game too, so huge congratulations to them for that. In addition to his almost accidental career path - which took him from QA on Burnout 3 to starting his own game company via Battlefield and writing House of the Dead - Overkill - we talk about his Spectrum in a briefcase, an early love of Cannon Fodder and Wing Commander, designing levels for Marathon, the story of Virgina, how Lumines can be a cure for anxiety and how Gamedev Story can mend a broken heart. And now he plans to go even bigger with his new company Overtime. We got a chance to hear him speak last week to a small group of entrepreneurs that Sergei works with at the eLab at NYU, and we were inspired to share some of the insights and wisdom that Dan bestowed on us during his 60 minute conversation with the group. In this episode you will learn: 1) How to compete with massive established companies and win2) How to make products designed for a niche group, mainstream3) The importance of relationships and how to cultivate them See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

My guest today is Wilson Kriegel - and he's going to tell us the story of a perfect storm that he lived through that in many ways shaped & pioneered the way we think about virality and breakout growth. Wilson is today the CEO at HrtBeat Audio, a wearable hardware and software company that could very well change the way we communicate and capture moments safely using handsfree devices. Wilson has been a leader in many companies in gaming and mobile since far before the first smartphones came on our radar. On today's episode, we will dive into the story of one of the earliest breakout hit games on mobile - OMGPOP's Draw Something, which Wilson was a huge part of. Draw Something was launched when its maker OMGPOP was less than a quarter away from running out of money. They'd let go of people - and were mentally gearing up to close shop when their new game Draw Something came out. Draw Something not only dragged its team back from the brink - but also saw some astronomical numbers and incredible viral growth that changed its team's fortunes literally overnight. Draw Something hit a million downloads 10 days after its launch in 2010, and 50 million downloads in the first 50 days after launch. Just as astonishingly, less than a month after Draw Something's launch, OMGPop was acquired for $210 million. In today's interview, we'll talk to Wilson about the early days of online games and mobile games, and go behind the scenes of the abrupt ascent of Draw Something & the flurry of activity and dealmaking that led to its acquisition less than a month after its launch. We go into incredible detail about what it was like to live inside the perfect storm that Draw Something found itself in the midst of back in 2012 - and this is an incredibly exciting episode that I'm very stoked to bring to you today. KEY HIGHLIGHTSHow OMGPOP was on the verge of running out of cash when Draw Something's mobile version came along. How OMGPOP's CEO Dan Porter adjusted Draw Something's gameplay to be much less competitive than its earlier versions used to be. The analogy that he used to describe this casual competitiveness. How the OMGPOP team's focus on fundamentals and the foundational work for years was essential in supporting & amplifying Draw Something's growth when it did blow up.Users' having to set up a gamer tag to identify themselves was a friction point in their onboarding process. However, this also resulted in massive virality and discovery when users decided to share these gamer tags to find opponents.OMGPOP had hired bankers hired to salvage what they could of the company as they expected to run out of money. The bankers had to switch gears from thinking about a distress sale to maximizing a sale price - as they engaged potential buyers. The 5-day bidding war that eventually culminated in OMGPOP's acquisition. How a virtuous cycle of growth can also turn against a product whose growth begins to slow down. The lull in the social gaming space at the time that resulted in OMGPOP and Zynga bearing the brunt of the slowdown - even though Draw Something continued to show strong engagement & financials. How this lull culminated in the OMGPOP office being shut down. How this rise and fall is often a natural cycle in business and technology that affects many well-known companies.Check out the full transcript and show notes here:https://howthingsgrow.co/draw-something-zynga-50-million-wilson-kriegel-picsart/**Get more goodies here:http://MobileUserAcquisitionShow.comhttp://RocketShipHQ.comhttp://RocketShipHQ.com/blog

It’s a new world record. We’ve talked about Mailbox in every single one of our podcasts and today’s episode was no exception. Just when we taught we had exhausted all discussion about the much-hyped email app that failed to blow Joseph’s mind, Mailbox announces earlier this morning that they were acquired by Dropbox! As you can tell from my reaction, I was pretty stunned by the news. As we learned from Draw Something, hype certainly can lead to quick acquisitions.
