Weeeeeee're back! With a bumper podcast reviewing not one, not two, but, oh – actually 2 games. One in a top secret hotel and the other billions of light years away in a massive garden. Probably. We've both been super busy and missed all our lovely listeners, but rest assured 2018 will be arcadtabulous. Yes, I went there. AND I MEANT IT. Now go and play Robert Smith and the Deadly Chicken Dinner. We also find out that Shaun is possessed by a Marmot or Marmite?
Tonight we are reflecting on Renegade which is a 1986 arcade game developed by Technos Japan and published by Taito. Taito later released a port developed by Technos Japan in-house for the NES in North America in January of 1988. Like Capcom, Taito was also responsible for porting popular arcade games to the NES like Elevator Action, Legend of Kage and Arkanoid. They also published some of the most highly sought-after games on the NES like Flinstones: Surprise at Dinosaur Peak, Panic Restaurant and Little Samson. Tonight our guest is Deacon Granamyr. The miNEStry founders, Archbishop Dracul and Father Avram, seek to inspire their 8-bit parishioners through methodical and ceremonial scrutiny of the library of games on the Nintendo Entertainment System.
A special topic request from a listener brings us to discuss the exclusive games that used to be available at Blockbuster Video in the 1990's and early 2000's. We follow that with our game of the week (Elevator Action) and some retro news. Three—three!—consecutive vertical shooters hit Famicom in this episode. Well, for a certain value of "vertical." All three of these games about shooting things while moving up or down along the screen, but all three take a very different approach to it. Star Force is the most traditional of the bunch, while Elevator Action combines vertical shooting with the sort of platform-based character movement found in the likes of Donkey Kong. And Field Combat... well, I'm not sure that one even knows what it wants to be. But at least it's interesting.
In the month of May 1987 many games were released for the Commodore 64. In episode fifty-three of Zapped to the Past, we conclude our look at some of those games, including the snappy Sun Star, the excruciating Elevator Action and the speedy Shockway Rider and wonder if the presence of demons and aliens should be in the buyer's pack for new homeowners…? A bit of an emphasis on day jobs this episode, but fortunately one of these games offers more than mere workmanlike effort. Activision's Rock'n Bolt stands out this week as one of the SG-1000's most appealing puzzlers—certainly a more interesting take on the genre than Soukoban, which gets credit for its primal nature but not for possessing any sort of audio-visual flair. And then there's Elevator Action, a perfectly decent arcade game done dirty by the console's hardware. In fact, I'd go so far as to say the SG-1000's limits do more to hamper this conversion than any other game we've seen on the system to date. Production note: SG-1000 footage in this episode was captured from a combination of Sega SG-1000 II with (with Card Catcher; RGB amp mod by @iFixRetro ) and @Analogue Mega Sg with card adapter module and DAC. It's the sequel to the game concept that dared to say, “Hey, you know what people love? Waiting for the elevator. Let's turn that into a game!” Taito even kept with the theme by making fans wait 11 years for this episode's game - Elevator Action Returns. What is the cool backstory that led MomSecretRecipe to nominate this game? Why are we complaining about the NFL on an arcade podcast? Are we about to insult all of our Welsh listeners (we sure hope not)? We also postulate about the origins of the arcade elevator stage, hunger for more gun cakes, visit the Starcade, and… I don't believe it.. that kid is *back* on the escalator again!

Walking miles shirtless in the snow, diving headfirst into ditches, leaving the country during covid, attending every game of the Junior High Lady Wolverines basketball season, Evan will stop at nothing to find love -- will he be rewarded with romantic rapture or horrendous heartbreak? The group reflects on the unique perils of early sexual success, the abominable lessons about sex learned from early 90s pop culture, and the incredible advantages of a private phone line as a 90s teen. We ponder if there's a correct way to ask for a blow job. Will (who is not Willie) regales us with his experiences as a teenager in a mid 90s sex education performance troupe. Willie (who is not Will) discusses the lengths he went to avoid his mother's wrath and what exactly happens at summer camp. 80/90s content discussed: Top Gun, Wild Orchid, Saved By The Bell, Gerardo, Elevator Action, EMAIL US @ Wolfwhocriedwomen@gmail.com

In 1998, Willliam Hunter discovered a classic video games emulator, MAME. He had a great time playing games like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Defender. After a while, curiosity kicked in, and he asked himself where all these games came from, how they came about, and who made them. Although the internet was a different place back then, William couldn't find a website that told the story he wanted to read, so he decided to make one himself. William Hunter is the creator of The Dot Eaters, one of the most trusted sources of information about the history of video games. His website has been referenced in many books about video games, and many Colleges and Universities check on it for relevant content. William developed the website for over 15 years to tell the stories of the games, systems, and individuals that set the cornerstones of the gaming industry as we know it today. In this episode, we talk about the origins of The Dot Eater, the particular backstory of the website's name, and William's relationship with video games. William kindly shared details of how he runs the website as a one-man-show and lots of curious facts about video games and the origin of companies like Activision and Electronic Arts. We also talk about the evolution of video games companies like Attari and what happens when companies created by people passionate about technology and games fall into business people's hands. Some Questions I Ask:For the audience, could you talk about your relationship with gaming? (1:26)Can you tell us how you got started in gaming? (2:58)What made you decide to begin compiling gaming history? (5:22)What made you decide to distribute this knowledge? You know that mildly frustrated feeling of waiting for an elevator; that eagerness for something to happen? Well, now you can feel that for the entire half hour and change of a podcast episode! In episode 254, we're playing ELEVATOR ACTION, the unreleased 1983 port of Taito's popular arcade game. Unreleased that is, until (we assume) in a 2001 late night, trench coat-wearing exchange in a dark parking garage - or perhaps an elevator??? - and the game came to light. Does the game shoot upward like Wonka's glass elevator or crash to the basement? Hit the button and find out. Japanese publisher Taito makes its NES debut with a pair of games that, in stark contrast to the games that immediately precede them, quite faithfully recreate their arcade predecessors rather than reinvent them. That's not a bad thing, necessarily, but given the ambitious design of the games released on either side of this duo, it does cause Taito to feel a bit behind the curve. (They'll sort it out eventually.)

A very manually-centric episode, involving little grabby hands, fishmittens, and alien Mars Reactor-esque power pedestals. The party falls under a hilarious curse, divers in its effect, but still finds time to discover ancient secrets about The Seed nee The Egg, as well as foment the piscine communist revolution. Meanwhile Honeydew says a lot of stuff about aluminum and electrolysis? A lot happens in this one is what I'm saying.

Arkanoid, Elevator Action, Athena, Kid Icarus, & Metroid. Plus we play Name That Chiptune!
IN THIS EXCITING EPISODE we talk about elevator enthusiasts, Jonathan's weird dick, drugs, and how the internet is a big old tub of crud. Go figure!
Galaktacus has awoken from its deep, wintery hibernation refreshed, reformatted and, quite frankly, starving! Luckily there’s an entire multiverse of pop culture out there for us to feed on. We’re trying out some new things on this episode and also talking about one of the oldest (130-years by our count) and most enduring characters in all of modern film, television and fiction—Sherlock Holmes (and of course Dr. Watson). We’ll be delving into the original dynamic detective duo and why their various adventures and reinventions continue to capture our imaginations. Plus we play a game of Elevator Action (now with real time limits!) and pitch the detective shows most worthy of dusting off for the modern day. So give a listen here and then come back next week when we dig deeper into BBC’s Cumberbatch-tastic Sherlock series. Also, hit us up on email at and then give us a follow on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter at @galaktacus.
Ashley and Molly roll solo to discuss everything that's happened over the last year while accidentally lining it up with a goddamn clip show. Topics discussed include: One year anniversary, Wine Mugs, Fuckin' to Megamind, Titanfall 2, Proper Thieving Attire, Dating a Middle Schooler, ELEVATOR ACTION, the Best Woohping, the Het Montage, Kissing Jerry, and a retrospective on the Best and Worst parts of Totally Reprise.
Jeremy muses over one of the greatest arcade games of all time: Taito's oddly out-of-time cooperative shooter, Elevator Action II (Elevator Action Returns if you're nasty). Be sure to visit our blog at Retronauts.com, and check out our partner site, USgamer, for more great stuff. And if you'd like to send a few bucks our way, head on over to our Patreon page!

Testify Galaktacus! Testify...about the preeminent Vertigo comic turned AMC series—Preacher! How does a book that pushed the envelope in terms humor and violence hold up two decades later? And more importantly how has it translated to the small (flat) screen? Plus we play another round of Elevator Action to pitch our favorite Vertigo titles to turn into mega-media properties. So give us a listen here
Playing With Power: A Mature, Unofficial Nintendo Power Retrospective Podcast
Hey there Power Players! Katherine stuck around for a bit talk more about her food anthropology podcast "How It Got In Your Mouth" and about getting the internet before everyone else. The mysogony of vocal fry, and the anti-masturbation policy of Mr. Kellogg (yeah the corn flakes guy) before leaving us alone to finally be a little raunchy and uncivilized again to discuss the Fun Club of Fall 1987. But first, special news! You'll notice this episode is shorter than our usual movie length commentary. We are parsing out our coverage to let you get more power in manageable increments! 21:00 - Cover. Legend of Zelda and Game of Thrones! 24:40 - Taito 4-way. Legend of Kage. Elevator Action. Renegade and Arkanoid! 27:30 - Howard doesnt have his kid to protect him from our scorn anymore! 28:30 - Hitler cop rises! 29:20 - Metroid news! Burger Time! Karate Kid! Thank God Katherine left...
Remember the ’90s? Galaktacus does (but mostly the parts we wish we could forget). With the success of Deadpool—the poster boy for the last decade of the 20th century—we travel back to a time when the shoulder pads were huge, the pouches were plentiful, the ponytails were flowing and "image" was everything. Are we entering another age of "extreme?" Does anything from that era of comics still hold up today? And what was with all of that cross-hatching? Plus we play "Elevator Action" with some ’90s properties that merit a second chance. Give a listen here!
Stuck in the big snowstorm? Boy, do we have amazing news for you! (Not stuck in the big snowstorm? Well…the news is just as amazing for you, too!) You humanoids can now escape after all…into Jim and Sean’s warm and magical Pie Factory world. We hope this episode will prove to be very…uplifting!

While you've been bingeing on holiday leftovers for the past week, Galaktacus has consumed the Marvel/Netflix series Jessica Jones in its entirety...and it was pretty tasty. Spoilers abound on this episode so if you're not caught up—be warned! While this purple planet-eating podcast may have met it's chromatic match in Killgrave, we cover a ton of ground (both good and not-so-good) from the talented JJ most of the head-scratching supporting cast. Plus we play a round of "Elevator Action" and make our pitches for Phase 2 Marvel series on the 'Flix. Give a listen here!

If you're anything like Galaktacus the second season of True Detective might have given you some digestive problems too. But then again, we like to view it as a bit of an acquired taste. On this week's podcast we discuss the good (the action) the bad (Tim Riggins) and the Velcoro (denim!) of TD2 and give season three the "Elevator Action" treatment. And while this season might have had you singing "Nevermind" about the plot and characters, this episode should settle your stomach.
Galaktacus Episode 10 is here and our biggest podcast yet just happens to be all about this summer's smallest cinematic hero. Paul Rudd is our bud but are there other characters and stories more worthy of the big screen treatment than Ant Man? Jump onto to some "Elevator Action" as we debate that question and more!
Galaktacus takes a trip down Fury Road to explore what made Mad Max so awesome and we present our "Elevator Action" pitches for a dystopian future property.

For this week, since Matt Leone is out in Japan, we invite Reviews Editor Justin Haywald to be his stand-in. Despite the one guy who saw and played with the Sony NGP not being present, we still manage to talk some thirty-odd minutes about Sony's new portable, and how it's a miracle that no one else had done a rear-facing touchpad before. Besides the NGP, other topics include: comic books we recommend, racial diversity in videogames, our memories of the Atari Lynx, more storytelling in games, the trouble with doors, and violence in games. Oh, and we finally declare the end of the Elevator Action joke, so don't leave any more messages on that topic. If you wanted one hour and forty minutes of lovable nonsense, this is the episode for you!

It's Nintendo 3DS madness this week, as we get Jeremy to dish out a whole lotta details about the Nintendo 3DS event in New York City earlier this week. We also talk up rumors about a Walking Dead game, a pair of twos (Portal and Final Fantasy XIII), and Frank delivers his final thoughts on Fallout New Vegas: Dead Money. We go through even more Elevator Action calls, and answer questions about how we do list features, how to vote with your dollar, the fate of Daily 1Update, storytelling in games, and more. Oh yea, and we have a totally different "cold open" for this show -- so yes, Frank just rambling on in the beginning is what you're supposed to hear. And yes, we even talk about food for quite a while.

It's the return of the traditional Games, Dammit! crew! Since Frank Cifaldi rejoins Scooter, Matt, and Jeremy in the studio and we all talk about Fallout: New Vegas' Dead Money DLC, Swarm, our musings about CES and Nintendo World, and the PSP2 (along with its "feel-y nipples"). Questions-wise, we tackle topics such as handholding in games, horseriding in Red Dead Redemption versus sailing in Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, a special boardgame from Brenda Braithwaite, M-rated sports games, and way too many voicemails about Elevator Action. Frank gives a special shoutout to the excellent video series Chrontendo, and we even conduct a live conversation with special guest/Oddcast contributor BallsRog. Enjoy!
