Send us a Text Message. The BC Nurses' Union protects and advances the health, safety, social and economic well-being of their members, the profession, and communities (BCNU, 2024). Listen as BCNU President, Adriane Gear discusses the recently negotiated minimum nurse-patient ratios, led by BC, as well as how she sees nursing as "ready for takeoff", with all the current synergies of collaboration. Adriane Gear was elected president of BCNU in 2023. As union president, Gear is committed to ensuring that health employers treat BC's nurses with respect and provide patients with the care they deserve.Adriane has been an RN since 1993. She has worked in long-term care at Saanich Peninsula and general surgery at Royal Jubilee and Victoria General (VGH) hospitals. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she worked in case contact management and surveillance for Island Health.Adriane first became active in BCNU in 2004, when she felt her employer had not taken her health and safety seriously after she received a needle stick injury while pregnant with her second child. She became a steward at VGH and was elected as the South Islands region occupational health and safety (OHS) representative in 2010. She later served as one of the region's council members. In 2015 members elected Adriane as the union's executive councillor for OHS and mental health. One of her proudest moments occurred in 2019 when, after an extended BCNU campaign, the province amended the Workers' Compensation Act to make it easier for nurses diagnosed with a mental injury to access WorkSafeBC compensation.Adriane served as acting vice president from 2018 to 2019 and in 2022 was elected vice president following a special election. In that role, she served as BCNU's provincial lobby coordinator, where she led campaigns to raise awareness of the province's critical nursing shortage and pressure all levels of government to address nurses' issues. More recently, she chaired the union's Human Rights and Equity Committee and fostered BCNU's renewed a relationship with other provincial nurses' union and membership in the Canadian Federation of Nurses' Unions.Adriane is committed to championing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, and advancing diversity, equity and inclusion within the union and the health-care system. She is dedicated to upholding the Nurses' Bargaining Association provincial collective agreement and ensuring that the province implements nurse-patient ratios, which will improve the staffing and practice conditions needed to keep nurses in the profession and improve patient care. She also wants to encourage more nurses to get involved with the union by continuing to share the importance of nurses' collective power.Adriane is a mother to two young adults, both attending post-secondary school. She lives with her husband and boxer Phoebe. Adriane is grateful for the opportunity to live on the traditional territory of the W̱SÁNEĆ people which includes W̱JOȽEȽP (Tsartlip) and SȾÁUTW̱ (Tsawout) First Nation.Instagram: @calling.all.nursesComments and feedback can be sent to our email: callingallnurses.podcast@gmail.com

Risers and thrivers: Be inspired by my dear friend, Genevieve McLean! She's an inspirational "3" time cancer survivor and thriver, now living life to the fullest and married to Kirk McLean, a retired NHL goaltender and a true legend here in Vancouver! Genevieve first faced AML (leukaemia) as a child, when she did only 1/2 of the treatment protocol at BC Children's Hospital and left to pursue alternative medicine. It was a success. She was in remission for 9 years, then relapsed. She only learned of the relapse after an injury endured while snowboarding and went for a regular routine check up. As a young adult, she was treated at VGH and had a bone marrow transplant, with thanks to her incredible brother who served as her donor, her lifeline. Her 3rd time facing cancer was now 7 years ago, only 6 months after she first met Kirk. A 6X5inch adrenal tumour was discovered and fortunately, a surgical procedure to excise the Tumor was 100% successful. Despite all that she's faced, she's also professionally modelled, has achieved a degree in business, and has worked for the Yellow Pages Group for almost 15 years as a top sales rep in media sales! She's also given back to the cancer community in every way she can- she's volunteered at Camp Good Times (summer camp for kids with cancer) and has sat on the board of the Michael Cuccione Foundation. No matter what you are facing today, hold on to hope and actively seek out inspirational role models like Genevieve! Tag your friends who may need inspiration and follow along here @60daystolive2012 for more stories of hope, resilience and inspiration to be empowered to overcome your hard days and to live today with more vitality and joy!

Chapter 1: Switch Health’s reviews online are below two stars. It’s because when you hear stories like the one from Toronto Sun columnist Sue-Ann Levy, you will understand why. She spoke to a retired Victoria resident who did a virtual COVID test a week ago , and the results have still not come back. The resident called Switch Health 15 times, which he notes has been very inefficient. Guest: Sue-Ann Levy, Toronto Sun Investigative Columnist. Chapter 2: As COVID-19 scythed through Ontario’s long-term care homes, a former provincial inspector said it was horrifying and infuriating to watch unfold. Problems like overcrowding, resident neglect, and lack of infection prevention and control, all helped the novel coronavirus spread rapidly through Ontario nursing homes, leaving more than 3,700 people dead. Guest: Carolyn Jarvis, Global News Chief Investigative Correspondent Chapter 3: Following months of public pressure prompted by a surge in COVID-19 cases, the Ontario government has finally announced its paid sick leave program. The Ontario COVID-19 Worker Income Protection Program is retroactive, beginning April 19 and ending on Sept. 25. It includes access to three paid sick days, and the province has agreed to reimburse employers 100 per cent of the employee’s wage for up to $200 a day. But many are wondering if it’s time for other provinces to follow suit. Guest: Harry Bains, Provincial Minister of Labour. Chapter 4: The city of Vancouver has announced their new Director of planning. How will she deal with all the issues of the city including the backlog of permits? Guest: Theresa O’Donnell, City of Vancouver Director of planning and general manager of Planning, Urban Design, and Sustainability. Chapter 5: Solutions to health care’s greatest challenges won’t come from one idea or person. They will come from a community of innovators and investors, using their time, talent, and financial support to create system-wide change. Guest: Angela Chapman, President & CEO at VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation. Chapter 6: The New Yorker staff writer Patrick Radden Keefe's new book Empire of Pain chronicles the Sackler family's ruthless marketing of OxyContin that generated billions of dollars, and millions of addicts. Kevin was the director and executive producer of Emergency Room: Life + Death at VGH, an award-winning documentary series about the public healthcare system. He directed After the Sirens, a documentary about the epidemic of PTSD among paramedics, and The Death Debate, a film about the landmark Carter versus Canada Supreme Court case on physician-assisted dying. If you needed more evidence that environmental issues are no longer fringe issues, all you have to do is look at Vancouver Greens’ Adriane Carr. Her 74,000 votes in the 2014 municipal election was the most by a Vancouver council candidate since 1996…and perhaps ever? Had she run for mayor in 2018, she might have won, and by as many as 20,000 votes. Born at VGH and raised in east Van, Carr’s future political life began auspiciously — a Master’s degree in Geography under the tutelage of UBC’s David Ley and Walter Hardwick. Her thesis? On the role individuals play in community, specifically entitled, “The Development of Neighbourhood in Kitsilano : Ideas, Actors and the Landscape.” Such fertile ground for our ‘meat and sizzle’ interlocutors Gord and Rob. And oh yes, they go there — the question of the role of individuals in shaping the community, the city, and city-wide planning. But first, a few dozen questions…about such matters as what got her into politics? (Desperation….about wilderness protection.) How did she translate that ambition into the role of power broker? (By founding a provincial political party, of course.) What does she wish she had more of? (Power.) And once she made it into City Hall in 2011, who censured her, told her she wasn’t allowed to speak to staff? (Two people, and you’ll have to listen for that nugget.) Perhaps the question of the decade for Carr, though, is whether she would like to be mayor. It’s also likely both the city’s worst kept secret, and best maintained electoral strategy — yes and no. (Sorry Hector, but you know the drill.) Over the course of the discussion, the trio get into the big issues, like dealing with density, taxes, character, and tree cover, plus the distractions of public life in the digital era. And if you thought age and authority would mellow out this green, wilderness warrior, think again. Carr still espouses civil disobedience — non-violent, mind you — as a key tactic to get people to acknowledge the kind of change we’re going to have to undertake to avert, or cope with, the climate emergency. But do we really need to take another three years, and $16 million, to talk about it? Have a listen, and let us know what you think. Read more »

With more than 260 years old, VGH is one of the most traditional insurance companies in the world. About a year ago, they decided to create a new company, called Futur X. The goal is to support not only VGH but also other companies in the region of lower Saxony in innovation projects. I was in Hannover and met with Christian Brömer, creative coach at Futur X. He talked about the challenges faced by the insurance industry and his plans to persuade people to work in a more user-centered way. This interview was recorded in late 2018.

An outbreak of the T-virus (or something) at VGH headquarters delayed production of the new episode for over a week! The VGH crew discusses the unofficially unannounced state of video game DLC and a conversation about the Xperia Play phone turns into something else entirely. Lastly, a new installment of Video Game Community Theater gets all "Buster Wolf" on your ass.
The VGH crew reflect on tales from their gaming "careers," Randy wins a contest, and the Video Game Community Theater gets bionic. Warning: This podcast contains multiple references to male tumescence, illegal narcotics and the 3DO. Also, games!
The VGH crew chat about the games they're looking forward to in 2011. Plus, D.J. probably doesn't have world exclusive news about the next Soulcalibur. Addictive substances and legendary 80's frontmen both somehow play a part. Also, the 3DS!
In their first episode, the VGH crew discuss their favorite games from 2010. Plus: Tom Clancy, peanut butter, and Paul really really likes Mass Effect. Really. Also: the premiere of Video Game Community Theater.
