In anticipation of the total solar eclipse forecast for April 8, author and journalist David Baron joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to discuss his award-winning book, American Eclipse, which chronicles the remarkable solar eclipse of 1878. Baron, a self-proclaimed umbraphile, or eclipse chaser, explains why he chose to write about the Wild West-era event, which darkened skies from Montana to Texas. He also talks about what has driven him to see eight total solar eclipses across the globe. As the upcoming eclipse is forecast to affect a sizable swath of the U.S.—the last time this will happen until 2045—he reflects on why these rare occurrences captivate humanity and discusses how their lore has influenced famous writers, including Mark Twain and Emily Dickinson. Just in time for the total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8th - we hear from David Baron, author of "American Eclipse: A Nation's Epic Race to Catch the Shadow of the Moon and Win the Glory of the World." The book focuses on the 1878 total solar eclipse that was visible in much of the United States. A trio of brilliant Americans (including a young Thomas Alva Edison and an extraordinary young astronomer named Maria Mitchell) raced to the Rocky Mountains to view the eclipse, gather information, and help elevate America's status in the eyes of the world's scientific community. Baron is himself an 'umbraphile,' which means he is an eclipse chaser; he traveled around the world to observe multiple total solar eclipses. The book was initially released in 2017; it has been re-released with a new afterword.

In this episode, you will learn the top three things we think a person new and even experienced to the marathon should focus on that they usually don't.I have a saying, the marathon isn't twice as hard as a half marathon. It is 2 to the 2nd power. It's exponentially harder, so that's 4 times harder than a marathon. I had the privilege of getting exclusive insider info from James Constantine, the digital marketing manager for PONT3, who delivered the event on behalf of the Sydney Marathon. If you don't live in Australia, you probably may not know that they are now a candidate for the Abbott's World Marathon Major Series, and if chosen, would be the seventh one. There are so many reasons why this is exciting, and not to mention, I live in Sydney, Australia, I have been for 12 years, so all my running friends from around the world might come and see me versus me going out to see them. While James is a sporting event marketing wizard, he's also deeply involved in the running community here in Sydney, Australia. I literally see him everywhere. So much so that he just won his latest half marathon and posted a super speedy time at one hour and 17 minutes. We focus on the top three things that new and experienced marathon runners should prioritize but often overlook. Our first point emphasizes the importance of appreciating the experience beyond just tracking time. The Sydney Marathon is highlighted as an example of a race that goes beyond being a mere competition, with its iconic route across the Harbour Bridge and finish line at the Sydney Opera House. Our second point discusses the remarkable growth and success of the Sydney Marathon, which has significantly increased participants. Lastly, insights from the race director, Wayne Lardon, highlight how the event showcases the best runners in the world and inspires people of all ages to take up marathon running.Timestamps[00:00:09] Appreciating everything outside your watch.[00:04:15] The app, phenomenal.[00:08:48] Marathon tips for newbies.[00:11:57] Authentic touch points with runners.[00:13:30] Seven plus hour marathons.[00:16:11] Marathon times and respect.[00:19:45] Closing roads for major events.[00:23:29] Frustrations with the marathon.[00:26:26] Guaranteed world major spot in 2025 if you race 2024 Sydney Marathon[00:31:25] Favorite run or workout.[00:34:06] Sydney Marathon's positive impact.Links & LearningsWatch on youtube and read quick summary on the blogJames Constantine InstagramSydney MarathonAbbot World MajorsPont 32023 Marathon recap epic videoDLake Instagram Hosted on Acast. Epic Races knows a thing or two (or a thousand) about putting on races and events. This Ann Arbor-based race management company, co-founded by endurance athlete Eva Solomon, is behind a slew of road running and cycling races and triathlons held throughout southeast Michigan each year. These range from the flagship event Tri Goddess Tri each June to the popular Battle of Waterloo, Swim to the Moon, Ugly Dog Triathlon, Hot Cocoa Classic, and many more, including virtual runs and races.  Eva, who has been on the show several times, returns with Pat Ball, Epic Races' community outreach director, to share what we can expect from summer and fall races coming up. She also talks about last month's Tri Goddess Tri (and Heather gives a shout-out to a couple of Michigan Runner Girls who took on their first triathlon at this June event near Chelsea, Mich.)  This fall is the Women Run the D Half Marathon, 10K & 5K on Belle Isle. Eva shares the updates to this event, which takes place on Sept. 15 this year. There's a discount code for this race -- and every other Epic Races taking place this year -- that is shared as well.

Armando Cruz has been a friend of Alex's for over 30+ years and leads a very inspiring life. He is a best-selling author, investor, a men's mentor, and has recently completed a 100 mile race! Armando details his experience on the show and offers tips and advice on how to keep a habit, a goal, a wish, consistent. This is only part one of a two-part episode, so keep an eye for next Monday's podcast!  Key Takeaways: Happy 2019!!! Armando just completed a 100 mile race (and this is the story leading up to this EPIC Race!) Armando helps men live, create, and fulfill their legacy. This has been one of the most memorable podcasts Alex has ever recorded. Alex and Armando have been friends for over 30 years! How did Armando get into sports and entrepreneurship? Is there enough evidence based on your actions to ‘convict' you on your goals, dreams, and desires? For Armando, it all started with 6 habits (and they are revealed in this episode). Armando set a goal to write 50 words a day and he is now a bestselling author on Amazon! Armando outlines his running and exercise routine and how it got him to run 100 miles. How does Armando put himself in the mindset so he's able to enjoy the process/journey, and not just the destination? Your brain understands how to answer questions, but it doesn't do very well with statements. So ask yourself the questions on how to achieve your goal. What kind of doubts did Armando have before the race? Armando details his experience leading up to the race. Stay tuned for part 2!!!   Mentioned in This Episode: Connect with Armando Cruz: http://www.armandocruz.com/   Book Recommendation: The Legacy Code: Modern Man's Guide to Escape Obscurity & Live a Life Unleashed, by Armando Cruz   Tweetables: “If you don't embrace the journey, you're going to be suffering for a lot longer.” “Who do I have to become to enjoy this journey?” “From when I started the 6 habits to when I raced 100 miles, it was almost 900 days that I had been building up to this.” Ask Alex A Question: Have a question you want featured on an upcoming Flip Empire Show? This August 21st, some parts of the Earth will be plunged into darkness in the middle of the day.  It will be a solar eclipse; the moon’s shadow will cross the United States from Oregon to South Carolina, with the path closest to Colorado passing through Wyoming and Nebraska. There have been many eclipses across the US, but there was a particularly special one nearly 140 years ago on July 29th, 1878.  That eclipse came at a time in American history of western expansion, industrial growth, new inventions and World's Fairs, and a young country wanting to establish itself on the international stage of science and technology. Our guest today is David Baron, author of a book about that eclipse.  The book is “American Eclipse: A Nation's Epic Race to Catch the Shadow of the Moon and Win the Glory of the World”.  David joins us to talk about that eclipse, the people involved in observing it, and its part in Colorado history. The OCR Underground Show is a weekly podcast that educates you on the latest research and training methods of some of the top coaches in the world.  These tips will help you take your OCR training to the next level. In this episode we talk with SGX Coach Bryan The Ginger on the Epic Series.  Bryan just got back from filming for the Spartan Race Ultimate Team Challenge, but had the time to stop by and give us a recap of the LA Epic Series event that just happened, plus gives some tips for prepping for your first Epic Race. In our research review, I discuss static stretching.  While static stretching is often forgotten or shunned due to it effect on power, it is still an integral part of a training plan.  This research shows that static stretching actually can increase power development before exercise, when you do it the right way.  Plus I give some take away tips and practical applications to incorporating stretching to maximize function and performance. And in our Coaches's Corner we have on SGX Coach and elite racer Mike Confer from MROC training in Oceanside, CA.  MROC is a unique training facility that have many obstacles you would find in a typical OCR race plus some things you would see on American Ninja Warrior.  While they specialize in OCR training they work with any individuals looking to improve their health and move better.   Coach Mike's fitness journey began in Okinawa, Japan as a Marine Corps Martial Arts Instructor. His passion for coaching and healthy living continued through college as a Personal Trainer, reaching a peak in 2011 when he discovered Obstacle Course Racing (OCR). This new sport demanded a training regimen that challenged his body with explosive movements while creating dynamic speed and lasting endurance, requiring him to develop a uniquely stimulating program for hybrid athletes like himself. Mike shares his insights on how to create a complete program.  He discusses the importance of polarized training, how to incorporate both high intensity workouts with low intensity training, proper activation and mobility drills to start a workout, training for a stadium series, and much more.   Complete Show Notes at www.ocrunderground.com/episode-31
