Identifying the Position of Your Heart Toward God Reveals the Posture of Your Heart (Episode 65)

In this episode, Erin Olson discusses how the position of our heart toward God reveals the posture of our heart toward God. If you were to rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being not good and 10 being great), how would you rate your relationship with God right now? God desires a positional relationship with each one of us. This episode elaborates on the physical positions of our hearts and how it affects our relationship with God and others. Like sunflowers who track east to west when young (heliotropism), we often get to a place where we feel spiritually mature and stay facing east and fail to track toward God continually day in and day out throughout season to season. Scriptures refererenced: Genesis 4:24, "After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life." Genesis 4:16, "Then Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden." Genesis 13:11, "So Lot chose for himself all the valley of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward. Thus they separated from each other." Ezekiel 17:10, "Even if it is transplanted, will it thrive? Will it not wither completely when the east wind strikes it - wither away in the plot where it grew?" Transcripts of this episode are available at http://www.sandalfeet.org/thedepotpodcast. In this episode, Erin Olson discusses why it is so important to keep a level head even when those around you aren't and are ignoring what you have to say. In 2 Timothy chapter 4, Paul knows his life is close to being at the end. Erin challenges her listeners with the question, "Is your life preparing you for death?" as she lists all the things Paul does in his final days. Are there relationships that need to be reconciled? Who needs to hear the Gospel preached to them? Who are you thankful for? Who do you want by your side and what do you want with you? Second Timothy challenges each one of us to do the work not just for ourselves, but for all of those who need to hear what the Lord has to say.   Erin's website information: For more resources and to sign up to receive Erin's weekly ministry newsletter, visit Erin Olson's ministry website, Sandalfeet Ministries, at http://www.sandalfeet.org/. In this episode, Erin Olson discussuses the importance of the Church not forgetting about Pentecost. So many churches are failing to not only celebrate Pentecost on the date of its observance, but are also failing to help believers understand the importance of the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. People and churches who fail to tap into the power of the Holy Spirit are no different than an electric car sitting in a garage with a power supply station set up on the wall, but never gets hooked up to the power supply. The car doesn't work as it should because it doesn't have power. Believers who don't understand what the Holy Spirit offers are no different. Once people understand what Jesus meant when He said He had to leave so the Helper would come (John 16:7), they will understand the Holy Spirit is the Helper who Jesus knew we would need. Paul wanted to remind Timothy of his calling and to not give up. Paul reminded Timothy of these three things as it related to leadership during tough times. 1) Leaders have power through the Holy Spirit 2) Leaders have the ability to love even those who hate them through the Holy Spirit 3) Leaders have the ability to be self-disciplined through the Holy Spirit Paul knew Timothy needed encouragement to stay strong, but for many of you today, you need a word of encouragement as well. Why Church Leadership Matters - Lessons from 1 Timothy 3-1-13 (Episode 53)

In this episode, Erin Olson discusses why church leadership matters as outlined in 1 Timothy 3:1-13. More important than charisma, stage presence, number of followers, and size of one's ministry is character. Church leaders are called to be leaders who serve and run their households well. When Christian leaders struggle and fall, it doesn't happen overnight. This chapter outlines how elders and deacons should behave in their positions. It also helps non-leaders within the Church know what to look for in a biblical leader. Elders = servant leaders Deacons = leading servants The offices of elders (overseers, pastors) and deacons vary in roles, however, both are to be complimentary toward one another as they support the Church. Elders 1. Lead under the authority of Christ 2. Care for the body of Christ 3. Teach the Word of God 4. Model the character of Christ Deacons 1. Meet the needs of the Church according to the Word 2. Support the ministry of the Word 3. Unify the body around the Word For downloadable notes on 1 Timothy 3:1-13, click HERE. In this episode, Erin Olson discusses how sometimes God uses the accidents and disasters in life (like shipwrecks and sandbars) to preserve life as she continues her teaching series in the book of Acts chapter 27. In chapter 27, Paul, under the supervision of a centurion and aided by a couple of his friends, is put on a ship to Rome. Along the way, the ship encounters a horrible Nor'easter and is battered and broken. Miraculously, everyone survives. Paul received a message from the Lord during the storm about the preservation of life. It encouraged him and he used the word to encourage the others. Things to Think About: Think of a time you found yourself in a storm. How did you feel during it? What did you do? If you've survived a storm, how did it change you? In this episode, Erin Olson asks the question, "If you were put on trial today, what would the charges be?" as continues her series in the book of Acts (Chapters 24, 25, and 26). In these chapters, Paul stands trial first before the governor, Felix and then in front of Festus. His case was then also heard in front of King Herod Agrippa II (the last of the Herod dynasty). None of them could find that Paul was guilty of anything and would have turned him loose except for the fact they wanted to find favor with the Jews (Felix was a political hack and was looking for a bribe) and Paul had requested to be heard by Caesar. Given that he was kept as a prisoner, the transport to Rome as a prisoner would be the means in which God got Paul to Rome. The continual sharing of the Gospel and the conviction brought on those who weren't Christians by the Holy Spirit, brought a range of emotions to Paul's listeners. Some were angered, some were frustrated, some were fearful, and some were callous. Each time Paul spoke, the people who were listening had their sins exposed in some manner. As A.W. Tozer said, “Not death but sin should be our great fear.” Things to Think About: Think of a time you were “put on trial” even though there were no charges against you and/or you were not found guilty of doing anything wrong other than being a Christian. What was the outcome? If you have never been called out for your faith, why? Are you actively engaging in sharing the Gospel with people? Or, have you isolated yourself amongst other Christians? What, if anything, can you do differently going forward?             FREE DOWNLOAD: 30 Days of Prayer for America prayer guide https://sandalfeet.org/prayer.   Website:   For more resources and to sign up to receive Erin's weekly ministry newsletter, visit Erin Olson's ministry website, Sandalfeet Ministries, at http://www.sandalfeet.org/.   Social media links:                           Facebook: @sandalfeet                         Instagram: @erin.olson                         Twitter: @sandal_feet   Subscribe to The Depot Podcast with Erin Olson:   com: https://www.charismapodcastnetwork.com/show/thedepotpodcast Libsyn RSS:  https://thedepotpodcast.libsyn.com/rss iTunes:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-depot-podcast-with-erin-olson/id1542120541 Google Play:https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly90aGVkZXBvdHBvZGNhc3QubGlic3luLmNvbS9yc3M Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1yre7eBaRyJjR0pHv9EcEK?si=iKqkTp7WTS21uJz4mLrghw YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjqVlkh5Qd8XzykvkvtVbxklwMmcUCCxZ   If you are interested in being a sponsor of The Depot Podcast with Erin Olson, please email Erin at erin@sandalfeet.org for more information.

In this episode, Erin Olson continues her series in the book of Acts and discusses how God is in control of all of life's events. In chapter 23, Paul stands trial before the Sanhedrin. They believe his guilt before he has a chance for a trial. They become so enraged at him, the Roman commander believes the people may tear Paul to pieces. A group of people plot to kill Paul, and God uses Paul's nephew as a messenger of this plan to not only Paul, but also to the commander in charge. God uses the Roman army to transport Paul to Caesarea to stand before the governor, Felix.   Acts 23 exposes us to humanity, humility and hope. Key verse – verse 11: “The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, ‘Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must go and also testify in Rome.'”   Takeaways:   Trust God. Jesus is with you even if you don't see visions or hear voices. In this episode, Erin Olson continues her series in the book of Acts as she discusses obedience and pain and suffering. In chapters 21 and 22, we see Paul heading to Jerusalem against the advice of the disciples. Paul wasn't being disobedient to the Holy Spirit nor was he being disrespectful to the disciples. Paul simply knew the Holy Spirit wanted him to go to Jerusalem despite the fact he would endure pain and suffering. We can't give in when we are scared or people are scared for us. Our purpose needs to be seen through if we want to remain obedient to the Spirit. Use the opportunity God gives to you to share the Gospel and your testimony. You never know what kind of impact this will have on people. Don't hold back! Takeaways: Our desire to be obedient to God should overshadow our desire to avoid suffering and hardship. Would we just move along because we didn't have any money or time for the beggar or would we stop to share what we, as Christians, do have? Have you ever felt like the beggar, especially as it relates to spiritual things? Have you been moved so greatly by someone else's faith that it caused yours to be ignited? In this episode, Erin Olson asks the question, "What if they (the disciples) hadn't obeyed?" as she continues in the book of Acts chapter 1. After Jesus's resurrection, but before His ascension, Jesus spent forty days teaching the disciples. He commanded them to not leave Jerusalem and wait for the gift that was being sent by His father (Acts 1:4). For ten days after Jesus's ascension, the disciples obeyed this command. They gathered together waiting and praying with one another. Unlike the three days between Jesus's death and resurrection where the disciples were scattered, this time they stayed together.  What if they hadn't obeyed Jesus out of fear or just plain disobedience? What if they went ahead of Jesus's plan? How different might things have turned out. Instead, we have the book of Acts. Luke's historical account of the account between Jesus' resurrection, ascension and the early church (about 30 years worth of history). We can learn not only a lot about the early church in this book, but we can learn a lot about ourselves through this book. In today's episode, Erin Olson gives these prophetic words: You may be tired, but keep going. Judges 8:4 says, “Gideon and his three hundred men, exhausted yet keeping up the pursuit, came to the Jordan and crossed it.” God called Gideon, a man who felt unqualified to be used by God. Gideon started out with 32,000 men, that number dwindled to 10,000, and then ultimately to 300. God did not want the Israelites to think for one minute that their strength would win the battle. God wanted to be sure that He alone got the victory. And, He did. You may be tired right now fighting the battle God has called you to, but know that if He called you to it, He will get you through it. If you are tired, ask for His strength. God is in a season of unleashing mighty miracles for battles He is fighting right now. Where some may think victory looks hopeless, God is saying, “Wait and see what I will do.” Believe it. Forgiveness is a gift from God. It is free to every single person who accepts it. However, this gift came at a cost. Sadly, the farther we get from the Cross, the easier it is to forget the cost. Jesus died so that those who believe in Him can live. While we can never earn the gift of salvation, our lives should be reflective of the gratefulness of His sacrifice. Progressive Christianity - Is It Our Garden Moment? (Episode 9)

The Depot Podcast with Erin Olson

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 4, 2021 33:42

In this episode, Erin Olson discusses how progressive Christianity may be our Garden moment. The fall of mankind occurred only three chapters into Genesis. Three chapters! In a perfect setting, the slippery serpeant uttered a few words that changed the course of history, “Did God really say?” (Genesis 3:1). Those words opened up room for doubt, curiosity, and disobedience. We have felt the effects ever since. I wonder today if those same words by Satan are being whispered in some Christian's ears, “Did God really say?” Progressive Christianity is pushing a narrative that changes what God said is good and right according to His Word. Some are even saying that the Bible itself isn't God's Word. They have heard the whispers of deceit by Satan, “Did God really say?” and they have taken a bite. We cannot continue to be silent about this, especially within the Church. False doctrine must be exposed. False teachers must be called to repentance. The world will not discipline those who have gone astray. Instead, they will applaud them because those who go astray, yet still claim to be “Christian,” will look more like them and less like Jesus. And we all know, the world does not like Jesus. Charles Spurgeon said, “Anything is better than the dead calm of indifference.” Don't settle in the camp of indifference, especially if you believe the Truth. We must speak up to expose the lies. Do What is Right in the Eyes of the Lord (Episode 8)

In this episode, Erin Olson reminds Christians to do what is right in the eyes of the Lord. If people were to write your name in a book, would it say, “He/she did right in the eyes of the Lord or he/she did what was evil in the eyes of the Lord?” We are all leaders leading someone. Whether we like it or not, our decisions influence others. Loving God and loving others means that we will love Him in the choices we make and the actions we take, and that we will consider others when we do these things. Throughout the Old Testament, we saw many kings who did what was evil in the eyes of the Lord. They learned their behavior from their fathers, and their father's father. They repeated bad behavior, and there were dire consequences for their actions. We see the same thing today. Many leaders still fail to do what is right in the eyes of the Lord. Each one of us must make the decision to resist the temptation of the devil and not do what is evil. It might look enticing, comfortable, fun, or profitable, but anything not right in the eyes of the Lord has consequences for the person as well as the people they are leading. Choose to do what is right. In this episode, Erin Olson discusses how we need to keep living even when things are hard or times are difficult. A warning for people: only listen to prophecies which line up with God's Word. Don't fall for prophetic words confirming sin and unrighteous living. Jeremiah was a prophet who prophesied to the people of Judah for forty years. He prophesied not only to those still living in Judah, but also to those who had already been exiled to Babylon. Jeremiah came from the town of Anathoth which was known as “the city of priests.” He was called to be a prophet around the age of seventeen. People in his hometown didn't believe his messages of repentance or destruction and wanted to kill him (Jeremiah 11:18–23). Babylon invaded Jerusalem three times before they completely destroyed it and the Temple in 586 B.C. Jeremiah was not taken captive during the early sieges. The people of Judah were being punished by God, and God chose to use the Babylonians has His weapon of choice, because they had turned away from God. He continually tried to get their attention through His spokespeople, the prophets, but the people wanted to listen to the false prophets who delivered more user-friendly prophecies. In this episode, Erin Olson discusses how it doesn't matter even if God's name isn't mentioned because God is constant. God is sovereign. This is true today and will be true tomorrow. God is still God whether we acknowledge Him or we don't. God still causes the sun to rise and set regardless of whether we say His name in public or not, and regardless of whether it is allowed or not. In the book of Esther, we see the heart of a man who hated God and hated His people. Haman was an Amalekite, and Amalekites were sworn enemies of the Jews. Haman wanted nothing more to destroy a man who refused to bow down to him and seize the opportunity to take revenge on the Jewish people. Haman was consumed with power and pride. Haman's position got him access to the king and the king issued a decree upon Haman's urging. But God — even if He is never mentioned in the book of Esther, was at work. What looked like doom for the people of God turned into a victory that is still celebrated to this day by the Jewish people. How amazing is that? In this episode, Erin Olson reminds Christians that we need to remember our most important mission; the Great Commission Christ gave us - share the Hope of the Gospel. Don't hold it back and think you get to decide who gets to hear it. Based on her book, Spiritual Orphans: A Generation in Crisis. Scriptures referenced: 2 Corinthians 5:17–20: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God.” Joshua 2 and Joshua 6 1 Corinthians 1:8–9: “On the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” Luke 15:3-7: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn't he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.' I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” Questions: When you think of the “one” who Jesus came to save, who comes to mind? If you could do one thing you deemed to be radical ministry work this year, what would it be? What, if anything, is holding you back? Do you believe the worst sinners have the same access to salvation as you do? How does your viewpoint line up with Scripture? How does it affect the way you do or don't reach people with the Gospel?
