Send us a textI feel very fortunate to release today's episode as I had a chance to sit down on Zoom with the brilliant Stef Okamoto, who is currently the Director of Manager Excellence for Service Now, a fast growing American software company based in Santa Clara, California. Before moving to ServiceNow, Stef had a distinguished career at Microsoft for 23 years, serving the organisation in her last 7 years as the Leader of Management Excellence in Global Learning and Development. Having worked directly under former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmar and current CEO Satya Nadalla, Stef experienced two drastically different leadership styles, one that was strongly based on control and compliance and fear under Ballmar to a much more human-centred, empowering approach rooted in high support, trust, autonomy and deep learning under Satya Nadalla. Based on these experiences, Stef learned how she did NOT want to lead, but rather, how she could take action to become the very best leader possible and to do so with courage, vulnerability, and authenticity, but at the same time, not let these things get in the way of holding those who she led to the highest standards possible. During this time, she learned that it's still necessary to be tough on people, but to do so with compassion, by providing them with a sense of high support in order for them achieve their true potential and to also help them find deep meaning in their work and a genuine sense of contribution to the organization. Stef's wisdom and work ethic stems directly from early days in her life. As an elite athlete who not only played in the junior Olympics as a softball player, she also received an academic scholarship to play volleyball in college. It was through these experiences that she developed a resilient mindset that allowed her to be fiercely independent in order to show what she was truly capable of achieving in life. In our episode, we discussed, in detail, how she's been able to stay deeply connected to her core values in life even through turbulent, challenging times and how she was able to overcome a harsh, negative inner critic in a way that helped her to construct an empowering personal narrative that ultimately gave her the self-confidence needed to take bold risks and to speak her genuine truth with respect and courage in order to truly find her place in such a competitive work environment. As you'll hear in this episode, Stef is deeply passionate about the work she does and when I think of her story I think of a quote from Oprah Winfrey which is this: When thinking about Stef, there's no doubt, she's found her calling and continues to shine brightly in a world that needs courageous leaders to stand up and take action to bring out the very best in others. Stef and I would love to hear your thoughts and what resonated the most with you in regards to our conversation. So, please share any thoughts on social media, as well, if you know someone who would benefit from tuning into our episode, please share the link with them. As you listen, I hope you feel inspired to think even more carefully about your own purpose and the core values that drive you in the work that you do. Summary In this conversation, Davis and Tod discuss the priorities for the beginning of the volleyball season. They emphasize the importance of serving tough and preventing aces, as well as finding reliable passers. They also highlight the need for strong hitters who can hit the ball with topspin and a right front blocker who can stop or touch the ball. They then shift their focus to the Olympics, discussing the dominance of the opposite position and the impact of instant replay. They also mention the fine line between winning and losing and the importance of the interaction between hitters and blockers. The conversation concludes with a discussion of their sponsor, Ball Time, and a recommendation for the podcast Finding Mastery with Michael Gervais. Welcome to episode #928 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #928. Let's explore what it means to master something. Dr. Michael Gervais is a world-renowned high-performance psychologist whose work has revolutionized the way we think about fear, potential, and personal growth. Mike, whose career spans working with top athletes and Fortune 100 leaders, delves into the critical barriers that impede our success and satisfaction in life — chief among them, the Fear Of Other People's Opinions (aka FOPO). His new book, The First Rule of Mastery - Stop Worrying about What People Think of You, dives deep into overcoming this pervasive fear. Mike articulates how FOPO manifests in nearly all aspects of our lives, constricting our actions and dampening our authenticity. From the sports field to the boardroom, the consequences of surrendering to FOPO are universally detrimental, leading us to play it safe and small. During our conversation, Mike shares his personal journey of curiosity, which has fueled his passion for understanding the human mind and its vast capabilities. He emphasizes that the path to mastery isn't just about achieving external success but about engaging in a lifelong process of learning, artistic expression, and embracing the moment. This approach not only enhances personal fulfillment but also drives us to contribute meaningfully to the world around us. We discuss the broader implications of living under the shadow of FOPO in today's society, where insularity and tribalism often dominate. He highlights the importance of embracing a balanced perspective and the dual recognition of our significance to others while acknowledging our smallness in the grand scheme of things. As someone who splits his time between innovative projects at the Performance Science Institute at USC and his podcast Finding Mastery, Mike embodies the balance between action and reflection, making him an ideal guide for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of themselves and the world through the lens of mastery. Whether you're a leader, educator, or simply someone pursuing personal growth, this conversation will empower you to lead a high-performance life by mastering the art of tuning out the noise and focusing on what truly matters. Takeaways Fear of other people's opinions (FOPO) can be a major obstacle to personal growth and potential. Setting high standards for oneself is more effective than having expectations. Context and culture play a crucial role in shaping our actions and behaviors. The path to mastery involves a deep commitment to learning, artistic expression, and a love affair with the unfolding moment. Maintaining authenticity and staying true to oneself can be challenging in the face of external expectations and pressures. The voice inside our heads can either be a protector or a propeller, and it's important to be aware of its influence on our thoughts and actions. Success is a subjective concept that varies from person to person and is influenced by cultural and individual values. The current state of society is characterized by increasing insularity, tribalism, and a focus on superficial metrics of success. To live a good life, it is important to prioritize experiences, relationships, and personal growth over external achievements. Investing in mental skills training, such as mindfulness, journaling, and conversations with wise individuals, can help cultivate a positive mindset and navigate challenges. The path to mastery involves embracing duality, recognizing our significance in the lives of others while also acknowledging our smallness in the grand scheme of things. Leave Wellness + Wisdom a Review on Apple Podcasts Power Quotes From The Show Thin Slice Your Purpose "A thin slice way to practice purpose is you would say, What is my purpose as ___ today? What is my purpose as a father today? After you practice daily purpose, you would practice like, what's my purpose this month? What's my purpose this quarter? What's my purpose this year? When you practice purpose thinking, eventually you'll get to, What is my life purpose? You just get a little closer because you're practicing, just like any other skill in sport or performance." - Dr. Michael Gervais Fear of Rejection "We have this mechanism in our brain that is scanning for potential rejection because rejection 250,000 years ago was a near death sentence. The brain is optimized without having to think to respond to threat. And the threat of rejection was a near death sentence. So when we see a sign of rejection, we conform, we contort, we will critique them or critique somebody else to take the heat off of us, or we'll just disconnect from the relationship. So it's such an intense thing that we will abandon our sense of self for the approval of others." - Dr. Michael Gervais Heal Your Trauma "The nature of trauma is that it's not the event itself that is the traumatizing bit. It's that that triggers a sense of aloneness and isolation because others around you don't relate to you. So healing happens when another person just looks at you and hold space for it and is in it with you. They might cry with you. They might laugh with you. They might get irritated, but they're holding the space for depth. That's where healing actually takes place for folks." - Dr. Michael Gervais Links From Today's Show Michael Gervais 201 Finding Mastery: Michael Gervais The First Rule of Mastery: Stop Worrying about What People Think of You by Michael Gervais 70-Year-Old Billionaire Definition Of Success 366 Mark Wolynn | How To Heal Generational Trauma: The Thoughts, Feelings, Patterns & Behaviors Formed Before You Were Ever Born 595 Relationship Death + Rebirth: How to Let Love Lead Again + Let Go of The Anxious-Avoidant Dance (Margo Running + Carrie Michelle) Dr. Tim Brown Nate Hobgood-Chittick The Map of Consciousness Explained: A Proven Energy Scale to Actualize Your Ultimate Potential by David Hawkins Josh's Trusted Products | Up To 40% Off Shop All Products Biohacking BREATHE - 33% off with the code “PODCAST33” SaunaSpace - 10% off with the code "JOSH10" PLUNGE - $150 off with the code “WELLNESSFORCE" SiPhox - 10% off with code "JOSH" BON CHARGE - 15% off with the code "JOSH15" SpectraSculpt - 15% off with the code "JOSH15" Defender Shield - Save 10% with "TRENT10" Neuvana - Save 15% with "WELLNESSFORCE" Supplements Organifi - 20% off with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' MANNA Vitality - 20% off with the code "JOSH20" LiftMode - Save 10% with "JOSH10" Adapt Naturals - 15% off with code "WELLNESSFORCE" MitoZen - 10% off with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” Activation Products - 20% off with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” BiOptimizers - 10% off with the code "JOSH10" Lightbody Total Eye Health - 20% off with "JOSH20" at checkout. Obsessive worry about what others think of you may keep you safe—but it will also keep you small. In our evolutionary past, belonging to a tribe was crucial for survival, as rejection posed a near-death peril. Although societal dynamics have evolved, our brains still assess how others perceive us, giving rise to the Fear of People's Opinions. The crux of the fear hinges on the learned behavior of identifying ourselves as separate selves—masquerading like we are individuals in a social world—rather than recognizing that we are social animals who have learned to identify as separate selves. Here to guide our dance through this carnival of life is Dr. Michael Gervais. Dr. Gervais, a leading expert in human performance psychology, returns for his fifth appearance to discuss his new book, The First Rule of Mastery: Stop Worrying About What People Think of You, which is all about liberating yourself from the opinions of others. The rubric is to turn the spotlight inward, understand your purpose and values, and create a structure that aligns with them, muting the extraneous noise of the outside world. With decades of experience in high-stakes environments, Dr. Gervais is toppling the pathologized psychology model. His clients include the NFL's Seattle Seahawks, Olympic medalists, MVPs from major sports, world record holders, musicians, and corporate leaders. Beyond this, he hosts the instructive Finding Mastery Podcast and has been featured by every major media outlet. Today's conversation delves into Dr. Gervais' transition from working with athletes to corporate leaders, emphasizing the power of vision and imagination, mental skills, the pervasive Fear of People's Opinions, and the profound concept of purpose. I hope this conversation proves educational and formative on your intellectual journey. To date, the Finding Mastery Podcast has been running for 8 years and for over 400 episodes. In that time, we've gained extraordinary insights and timeless wisdom from some of the top thinkers and doers in the world. While we have come to realize that there is no singular “golden thread” to how the best in the world operate – we've noticed some common themes, skills, and insights that many of these people have utilized on their path to mastery. And that's why we're so thrilled to bring you the all new Best Of Finding Mastery series. In each episode, we'll take a deep dive into a specific skill or topic – pulling together the best insights and gems from years of interviews with the best in the world. These are tools and insights that have stood the test of time. For this inaugural episode, we're highlighting conversations with a remarkable group of leaders who've made a game-changing impact leading high performing teams in the worlds of sports, branding, technology, retail, business and the military. You'll hear from game-changers across industry like Satya Nadella (Microsoft CEO), Pete Carroll (Seattle Seahawks Head Coach), Jan Singer (former Victoria's Secret & J.Crew CEO), Toto Wolff (Mercedes Benz F1 CEO), Julie Rice (Co-Founder of SoulCycle), and more. Though each of these individuals comes at leadership with unique personal philosophies, core values, and historical experiences, you'll hear quite a bit of overlap when it comes to their central drivers for success in building high performing teams. Now, we could have cut this episode a dozen different ways — we've had so many incredible leaders on this podcast, it was nearly impossible to choose which conversations to highlight. So, let us know if you like this format and what subjects interest you. There's plenty more to choose from for a volume two, three and beyond. And with that, we hope you enjoy the first installment of our Best Of series on high-performing teams.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Lauren Bay-Regula is a mother of three, a business owner, and a two-time Olympian who is currently training for her third Olympic appearance on the Canadian softball team. She and her husband, Dave Regula, have experienced the difficulty of maintaining your body, your mind, your business, and your family all at the same time. You don't want any of those plates to drop, but it's a struggle keeping them all in the air at the same time. And things didn't always go well. There were some dark years in there, and depression put up one hell of a fight. But because they had each other — and because they were willing to put aside their egos and ask for help — both Lauren and Dave are still spinning those plates and crushing every aspect of their lives. We often put Olympic athletes up on a pedestal, like their lives are somehow different than ours. But Lauren reminds us that being an Olympian, being a parent, being a business owner — it's all hard, it's all worth doing, and we often don't give ourselves enough credit for making it through some tough shit. We Discuss: 00:02:30 - The parents who taught Lauren that sports are play 00:05:30 - Why “you want to be an athlete, you don't want to be a softball player or basketball player,” and how parents are pushing their children to play sports in potentially unhealthy ways 00:13:05 - Life as an Olympic softball player + meeting her husband 00:15:25 - Coming out of retirement to pitch in the world championships as a 35-year-old mother of three 0016:30 - Lauren walked away from softball and didn't play for eight years — so why did she decide to come back? 00:20:00 - How a difficult move led to the lowest point of Lauren and Dave's life together 00:25:40 - Making it through seven long years of postpartum depression 00:30:50 - The part of depression that we almost never hear about 00:39:00 - The unreasonable expectation that mothers should have motherhood all figured out 00:43:10 - Letting go of the past to live in the present 00:53:00 - Going back to the Olympics for the 3rd time 00:59:30 - Actively working on your relationship and being willing to have conversations that suck 01:08:00 - What and who are driving Lauren and Dave to keep going 01:14:10 - “When you criticize your children, they don't stop loving you — they stop loving themselves.” 01:16:25 - Strong Mom Strong Family 01:27:00 - The importance of finding your tribe Resources: Join Lauren's FB Group: Strong Mom Strong Family (https://www.facebook.com/groups/193749661226193/) Download the Strong Mom Strong Family Free Guide (https://jointrakathletics.com/secrets-of-a-strong-mom36004348) Finding Mastery Podcast (https://findingmastery.net/category/podcasts/) Connect with Lauren Bay-Regula: Website | trakathletics.com (https://trakathletics.com/) Instagram | instagram.com/laurenregula (https://www.instagram.com/laurenregula/) Facebook | facebook.com/people/Lauren-Bay-Regula/100008001136700 (https://www.facebook.com/people/Lauren-Bay-Regula/100008001136700) Connect with Cal: Website | https://www.thegreatunlearn.com (https://www.thegreatunlearn.com/) Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/bunkercal/ (https://www.instagram.com/bunkercal/) Twitter | https://twitter.com/BunkerCal (https://twitter.com/BunkerCal) Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/BunkerCal (https://www.facebook.com/BunkerCal) YouTube | The Great Unlearn (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCneI0an6qiL7t-7sne9TjhQ) Subscribe to the Great Unlearn Podcast: Apple Podcasts | https://apple.co/3a4ATpc (https://apple.co/3a4ATpc) Spotify | https://spoti.fi/2Rb7emv (https://spoti.fi/2Rb7emv) Google Play | http://bit.ly/2sehHUE (http://bit.ly/2sehHUE) Stitcher | http://bit.ly/2t8wHE6 (http://bit.ly/2t8wHE6) If you are called to support the podcast, please share the show with a...

Lee Belbin and I crossed paths through the Find Your Feet Podcast. One day I received a compassionately crafted email from Lee, sharing his thoughts and feedback on the podcast so far. We started exchanging emails where Lee opened up more and more about his background as an ecologist, his theories on performance and how by combining these two things he had managed to avoid any sporting injury for his entire life. Now 69, I thought this was quite a remarkable feat and knew we needed to sit down for our own conversation. Lee has a very humble and unique approach to athleticism, which he calls ‘punctuated equilibrium.’ It actually stems from an ecological theory of evolution. In a very basic summary, species will experience a period of stability until along comes an external situation that throws them out of equilibrium and forces them to either adapt or die. Apply that to a human and obviously the everyday circumstances or deep-set internal drivers that knock us off balance will not be life or death, but it does force us to grow and adapt, or suffer. Lee is very passionate about striving for balance in our lives. However, he utilises ‘punctuation marks’ to challenge himself and grow physically and intellectually. I found our conversation around this topic and so many more, incredibly fascinating. I hope you enjoy this one! Main Points Punctuated Equilibrium - internal and external ‘punctuation marks’ ‘Home Points’ and ‘Rocks’- the importance of having these places, people, or circumstances that offer stability to our lives, from which we can recharge again. Growing doesn’t mean ‘up and up!’ Defining success and its malleability with age How we remain grounded and aware, whilst simultaneously striving and growing Lastly I would also love to share this powerful passage from Michael Gervais’ blog, a top-class American psychologist whom I love to follow on his own ‘Finding Mastery Podcast’. In this blog piece, he speaks to the topics of balance and internal growth: “It is not the external world that needs to change. Transformational shifts happen from upgrading the internal world – your patterns of both thoughts and actions. These pattern shifts might just begin with moving beyond the drive for high performance; beyond the search for peak experiences; beyond being able to do more in your life. While the peaks are important and wonderful, the transformation of living more fully daily begins with a fundamental commitment to organize your life to be you at your best more often; to be more present, more grounded, more joyful, more playful, more focused — more “switched-on”. That way of living requires an investment in recovery: proper sleep, proper hydration and food intake, plenty of movement and an optimal way of thinking.” Thank you so much for joining me in the podcast Lee and I hope you enjoy listening to this one too! :)

Wendy Behary is a founding fellow and consulting supervisor for The Academy of Cognitive Therapy (Aaron T. Beck Institute). Wendy has a specialty in treating narcissists and the people who live with and deal with them. She is the author of "Disarming the Narcissist -- surviving and thriving with the self-absorbed” translated in 10 languages. Narcissism and world-class achievement have an interesting relationship. When we think of those who excel on the world stage, it'd be easy to conjure up a story that they have a deep inner belief that they can be the absolute best in the world (that's actually not the case, as we've come to learn from many of the folks on the Finding Mastery Podcast. But for those who do hold that belief -- THE WORLD REVOLVES AROUND ME BECAUSE I’M THAT IMPORTANT AND SPECIAL --is when my antenna tends to attune to the concept of narcissism. It's the excessive self-centered vanity and lack of regard for others that is one of the hallmarks of narcissism. We can all be self-absorbed, needy….. display narcissistic behavior from time to time…that's not what this is about….it's when the sense of grandiosity is so pervasive that it impairs daily functioning with others, and in essence, within themselves. Narcissism is named for the Greek myth of Narcissus—who was a hunter and when he saw his own reflection in the water, he fell in love with it, not realizing it was merely an image. He stared at his reflection until he died. The way I like to simplify narcissism, is that the person can't tell the difference between himself and everyone around him -- everyone then becomes a reflection of his him -- in which gives him the right to use them as extensions of his own self-worth (even if that means public embarrassment). If you have ever thought, am I'm living with or working with a narcissist, or am I a narcissist? Wendy provides ways to tease that out. She dives into why so many elite performs are narcissists, and how we can be more effective with living and working with them.
