In this episode, we discuss the benefits of a men's program, and how it will transform your family and your relationship.   The Benefits of Transforming Your Partner Develop a common language Inspire and motivate each other Catch a problem before it explodes Set a good example for the whole family Level the playing field   About Dr. Mark Novitsky Mark A. Novitsky Jr., MD is a dual board-certified medical doctor, certified life coach/master coach, and proud girl dad. He majored in Health and Exercise Science at Wake Forest and completed medical school training at Lewis Katz Temple University School of Medicine. His private practice NOVITSKY MD boutique mind doctors was named the 2022 outpatient practice in Pennsylvania for their therapy-first approach and he has been named the top child psychiatrist in Maryland (2020) and Pennsylvania (2022). Following his child and adolescent fellowship, Mark was the medical director of one of Philly's largest non-profit mental health systems. While there, he sought additional training through the Beck Initiative - a partnership between Philadelphia's DBH and the Beck Institute, the birthplace of cognitive behavioral therapy. He later built upon this expertise with The Mind Firm Method cognitive coaching certification and master coach training.   Mark has helped thousands of men in his career by helping them optimize their mindsets. He is excited to give fellow dads the mental tools to work through the many life stressors that may negatively impact their well-being.   In his free time, Mark enjoys photography, live music, and walks outdoors with his wife Ali, two girls, and their labradoodle.   Introducing Fit Dad Collective My husband, Dr. Mark Novitsky, joins me today to talk about our new program that he's running in collaboration with Dr. Alex Stewart. The Fit Dad Collective is for men to take an all-around approach to their health and fitness. Mark talks about some of the barriers men face when starting their wellness journeys and how to overcome them. We created a separate men's program because men's fitness has different needs than women's. Men also need to really understand the ‘why' behind the program, how it works, and why we recommend something over another.   Fitness For All the Family Running the Fit Dad Collective along with my women's program, Transform means that you'll find a new level of support for and with your partner. Plus, not only are you supporting each other, but you're also setting a good example for your families. When both parents invest in their health, children are more likely to understand the importance of wellness, as well. We also talk about leveling the playing field. When both you and your partner have access to this information, you come to a new level of understanding between each other, catching thought distortions, and recognizing their stress patterns. Is your male partner going to sign up for the Fit Dad Collective? Do you have any questions about the program? Hi everyone, today is a very special episode of The Psychology Podcast. A few nights ago, the legendary psychiatrist Dr. Aaron Temkin Beck passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 100. Tim, as his friends and family affectionally called him, lived an exemplary, full life well lived. Personally, he was a dear mentor and friend of mine. I used to live in the building next door to him in Philadelphia and we'd have tuna sandwiches together on Sundays at his place and discuss humanistic psychology and how to treat patients as humans first. He was always so encouraging of my work, and I enjoyed our discussions about his life and work immensely. I will miss his bow tie, fist bumps, and a sharp mind, which lasted all the way until the end. In my last in-person meeting with him just before the pandemic hit, I handed him a microphone and asked if he would talk about what research he was most excited about these days and whether he could give any advice to young psychologists. That recording is what you will hear today on the podcast.Remarkably, Tim worked all the way up until his death. To many, he is most known for his work in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), which is a time-sensitive, structured, present-oriented psychotherapy that has been scientifically tested and found to be effective in more than 2,000 studies for the treatment of many different health and mental health conditions. When implemented correctly, CBT can help individuals get better and stay better. However, not many people know this, but Tim's work was much more than the seminal work he did pioneering CBT. Tim was recently working on a new form of psychotherapy with his colleagues Ellen Inverso and Paul Grant called "Recovery-Oriented Cognitive Therapy”, which deeply humanizes psychiatric patients. Guided by Tim's cognitive model, Recovery-Oriented Cognitive Therapy (CT-R) is an evidence-based practice that provides concrete, actionable steps to promote recovery and resiliency. Originally developed to empower individuals given a diagnosis of schizophrenia, Recovery-Oriented Cognitive Therapy applies broadly to individuals experiencing extensive behavioral, social, and physical health challenges. It is a highly collaborative, person-centered, and strengths-based approach, as it is focused on developing and strengthening positive beliefs of purpose, hope, efficacy, empowerment and belonging. The approach is specially formulated and effective for individuals (i) who have a history of feeling disconnected and distrustful of service providers, (ii) who are not help-seeking, or (iii) who experience challenges that impede action towards aspirations. The reach of Recovery-Oriented Cognitive Therapy extends to mental health professionals across all disciplines, families and loved ones, and peers with lived experience. One other thing I'd like to mention before we get to today's episode is the Beck Institute. In 1994, Tim and his daughter, Dr. Judith S. Beck, founded Beck Institute as a 501(c)3 nonprofit with the mission of improving lives worldwide through excellence and innovation in Cognitive Behavior Therapy training, practice, and research. In 2019, Beck Institute opened the Beck Institute Center for Recovery-Oriented Cognitive Therapy to train professionals and staff who work with individuals given a diagnosis of a serious mental health condition, such as schizophrenia. Beck Institute honors the legacy of Dr. Aaron Beck by providing training and resources in both CBT and CT-R to people around the world. In the nonprofit's 27-year history, over 28,000 health and mental health professionals have received training in CBT or CT-R through a variety of programs. You can help honor Dr. Aaron Beck's legacy by making a gift to the Aaron T. Beck Fund at Beck Institute. This enables the organization to continue Dr. Beck's latest work with the Center for CT-R at Beck Institute, develop programs, fund scholarships for trainees, and everything in between. The Beck Institute website can be found at beckinstitute.org. OK, now without further ado, I bring you our guest today, Dr. Aaron Beck. RIP,  Tim.

On this episode of “Sanity” Dr. Jason Duncan and Dr. Scott Waltman discuss some of the pitfalls mental health professionals make when implementing cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). The most common pitfalls identified in research completed by Dr. Waltman included socratic questioning and guided discovery. Dr. Waltman and Dr. Duncan discuss socratic questioning, its origin with the Greek philosopher Socrates, and how it can be an effective tool in therapy. They provide numerous benefits to this intervention, including helping clients “become their own therapists.” Dr. Waltman discloses the framework for honing the skill of socratic questioning from his new book, Socratic Questioning for Therapists and Counselors: Learn How to Think and Intervene Like a Cognitive Behavior Therapist. Dr. Waltman also identifies a number of other pitfalls therapists make when implementing CBT, such as setting an agenda, pacing the session, receiving feedback from clients, reviewing and developing individualized homework, trouble selecting when to implement interventions and deciding where to intervene. He describes his own therapeutic techniques and how to combat some of these pitfalls. Dr. Duncan and Dr. Waltman both emphasize the importance and difficulty of learning these important skills. They described numerous resources for therapists interested in learning more about CBT, including websites, research studies, books, trainings, and certificates. Dr. Waltman is a clinical psychologist, international trainer, and practice-based researcher. His interests include evidence-based psychotherapy practice, training, and implementation in systems that provide care to underserved populations. He is certified as a qualified Cognitive Therapist and Trainer/Consultant by the Academy of Cognitive & Behavioral Therapies and is board certified in Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology. He is a board member for the International Association of Cognitive Psychotherapy. More recently, he worked as a CBT trainer for one of Dr. Aaron Beck's CBT implementation teams in the Philadelphia public mental health system. In addition to the physical toll of childbirth, there can be mental health challenges as well. Today's guest, an expert in postpartum mental health, is here to talk about how to recognize it and address it.   Preparing for the postpartum period requires: Having clearly defined household and caregiving roles with your partner Understanding the state of your mental health Recognizing where you need help and asking for it Investigating your overall hormonal health   About Shannon Wilson Shannon is licensed by the State of Iowa as a Mental Health Counselor and holds Certification in Perinatal Mental Health. She has a Bachelor's degree in Social Work and earned her Master's Degree in Counseling, Rehabilitation, and Student Development in 2010 from the University of Iowa.  Shannon has extensive experience treating adults, both individuals and couples with a special interest and expertise in reproductive and maternal mental health. She enjoys working with pregnant women and mothers who may be experiencing difficulties with role changes and identity shifts as a result of pregnancy and motherhood, as well as mothers who are experiencing postpartum depression or anxiety.  Shannon remains committed to ongoing learning and professional growth and has continued her education with a variety of trainings including the 12-hour post-graduate Postpartum Depression training at The Postpartum Stress Center as well as with the completion of the Postpartum Support International Maternal Mental Health certificate training. She is the first person in the state to become certified in Perinatal Mental Health. Shannon also completed "Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Anxiety-Related Disorders" training at the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy in Pennsylvania. Shannon's other professional interests include, but are not limited to the treatment of anxiety disorders, self-esteem, women's issues, codependency, and couples issues. She helped to found and formerly chaired the Iowa Chapter of Postpartum Support International. Shannon is available for public speaking about a variety of mental health issues. She is currently a member of the American Mental Health Counselors Association, Iowa Mental Health Counselors Association, Postpartum Support International, and Postpartum Support International Iowa Chapter.   Recognizing Postpartum Conditions Post-partum depression is a large part of perinatal mental health. However, there's a lot more to it. Shannon discusses how anxiety, traumatic stress, and so many other conditions are common after the birth of a child. She explains the need for adequate mental health services for women with these conditions as well as those who've experienced fertility issues, pregnancy and infancy loss, and traumatic birth experiences.  In fact, most women experience a significant hormonal shift for the first few weeks after childbirth. Known as the “baby blues”, these mood-affecting hormonal fluctuations are perfectly normal. Things only become a problem when postpartum issues begin to impact the quality of life. Shannon isn't so concerned about the nature of intrusive thoughts that occur after childbirth. Instead, she focuses on reducing levels of distress.   Preparing for Postpartum Difficulties Perhaps the best way to handle the difficult postpartum period is to be prepared for it. Shannon discusses how she sets women up for success well before birth. Open discussions with your partner are key. Part of this is being clear on caregiving roles and responsibilities and being open about mental health concerns. Most of all, Shannon wants us to recognize that we don't have to do it all and to ask for help when we need it. We also talk about how to react during stressful situations that are out of our control. You can do things on a daily basis to prevent stress. You can also prepare ahead of time to manage stress when it occurs. Shannon shares how setting healthy boundaries and expectations will help limit or prevent stress. How can you set boundaries to manage stress before the postpartum period begins? Leave a comment on the episode page! So being able to process that experience, work through it, and heal from it is super important.” [4:40] “The content of the thought and how graphic it is, does not concern me. That has no clinical value to me. What I'm most concerned about is their level of distress associated with it.” [11:05] “If you are struggling, the sooner [you're evaluated] the better because what we know is that earlier intervention will help you feel better faster.” [21:39] “Keep expectations low. Don't put so much on your plate because it's so important to have some downtime to restore.” [25:55]   In This Episode What perinatal mental health is and why it's important  [3:35] Typical postpartum expectations and the “baby blues” [5:25] Signs that you may be experiencing postpartum OCD and how to address it [8:40] How to prepare for the postpartum period [11:45] The hormonal shifts that occur during and after pregnancy [15:50] Tips for managing stress [24:10]   Links & Resources Use Code OMEGA3 for 10% off Omega3 Supplements Find Shannon Wilson online Follow Shannon on Facebook | Instagram The Postpartum Stress Center Find Your Longevity Blueprint Online Follow Your Longevity Blueprint on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube | LinkedIn Get your copy of the Your Longevity Blueprint book and claim your bonuses here Find Dr. Stephanie Gray and Your Longevity Blueprint online    Follow Dr. Stephanie Gray on Facebook | Instagram | Youtube | Twitter | LinkedIn Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic Podcast Production by the team at Counterweight Creative    Related Episodes Episode 22: My Top Anxiety Tips

Keep these questions handy: What is the situation? What am I thinking, what am I imagining? How does it make me feel? Sad? Anxious? Angry? Helpless? What tells me that this thought is true or totally true? What tells me that it is not totally true or potentially false? In what other way can I look at this situation? What is the worst thing that could happen? What will I do if this thing happens? What is the best thing that could happen? What is the most likely scenario? If I change this thought to a more positive one, what might happen? What thought can I change this thought to? Dr. Robert Hindman is a clinical psychologist at the Beck Institute. He conducts various trainings and provides consultation and supervision for therapists. He has written books on cognitive therapy, anxiety, and mindfulness, and studies how organizations and therapists can best implement cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). In this episode, Dr. Robert Hindman and Dr. Jason Duncan discuss the increase in anxiety and uncertainty for those returning to work after quarantine from the COVID-19 pandemic. The unknown and uncertain are present now more than ever due to the ever-changing nature of the information we are given by the media and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). What's more, intolerance of uncertainty is an important mechanism to keep us safe from danger, however, it can quickly become maladaptive and excessive. Dr. Hindman and Dr. Duncan explore options to address worry and uncertainty, including analyzing the utility of worry (i.e. does it make me feel better to worry about these things?), how to make the best decisions for yourself, exposure, both real and imaginal, to the sources of anxiety and fear, and examining and challenging worrisome thoughts. They discuss numerous examples of how applying these techniques can effectively reduce worry and intolerance of uncertainty from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Top 10 Ways Our Thoughts Screw With Us Episode Show Notes In the therapy world, you’ll often hear about the “ancient brain”. It’s the idea that there’s a part of your brain hardwired to identify threats (or perceived threats) in your environment and protect itself. It’s natural for your brain to protect you by taking your thoughts to what you don’t want, don’t like, worst case scenarios and all the ways something can go wrong. It’s so common, in fact, that research based in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has graciously provided us with a list of the 10 most common cognitive distortions, or what we like to call the top 10 ways your thoughts screw with you. Join Nikki, Jolene, and Alyssa as they walk you through how to recognize, name, and tackle these thinking errors.   In this episode we talk about: What is CBT? CBT is short for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy an evidenced-based method of talk therapy used to treat anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and other areas of mental health concern. It’s based on a cognitive (thought) model that identifies a link between our beliefs, thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Basically, the concept that how we perceive a situation impacts our response more than the situation itself. Interesting. . . Very interesting, right? What are Cognitive Distortions? Cognitive Distortions were first proposed in 1976, by a psychologist named Aaron Beck. It’s an irrational thought response or habitual way of thinking that typically develops or evolves over time based on your experiences. They are thinking errors, thinking errors we all experience. If you’ve ever felt like your thoughts were screwing with you, you’ve likely experienced them, too. Don’t worry, this episode also covers a few tools to help you deal with these thinking errors in way that helps improve your responses and actions. For now, let’s get started with listing common cognitive distortions. Top 10 Cognitive Distortions AKA Top 10 Ways our Thoughts Screw Us Catastrophizing: Going to the worst-case scenarios or seeing only the worst possible outcomes All-or-Nothing or Black and White thinking: When your thoughts take you to “always”, “never”, or “every” Personalization: The belief that you are responsible for events outside Overgeneralization: Making generalized interpretations from a single or few events/situations Emotional Reasoning: The idea that how I feel is who I am. Example: “I feel like a bad mom therefore, I must be a bad mom Disqualifying the Positive: Focusing only on the negative while ignoring the positive. Jumping to Conclusions: interpreting a situation with little evidence. Magnification and Minimization: Exaggerating or minimizing the significance of a situation. “Should” Statements Labeling: taking one characteristic of a person or self and applying it to the whole person How to Deal with Cognitive Distortions Practice Self-Awareness by using things like journaling to help you notice and reframe these thought, then say the logical thought aloud Find someone you trust to help you challenge irrational thoughts and cognitive distortions as they see them come up. Watch your defense wall. Agree on how this conversation will go and be willing to accept this feedback. Use logic, logic helps you stay grounded in what you know to be true instead of living in what you think may be true. Therapists Uncut Challenge: Choose one of these distortions that you most identify with and commit to noticing, naming, and reframing it throughout your week. The online CBT courses she has developed at the Beck Institute have been taken by people in 130 countries. Cognitive Behavior Therapy is a cognitive therapy focused on identifying and modifying thoughts, feelings and behavior. Based on the cognitive model, CBT is a psychotherapy approach that recognizes that an individual’s reactions, either emotionally or behaviorally, are a result of how they perceive a given situation. One important part of CBT therapy is helping clients notice their automatic thoughts in order to change their unhelpful thinking and behavior. Once clients become aware of their automatic thoughts and how those thoughts lead to negative emotions and behavior, they can begin to experience lasting improvements in their mood and functioning. Today's episode was so important! I sat down with my dear friend, Adele Tevlin, and we spoke about a new era of leadership — something we are both incredibly passionate about. In particular, we dissected the idea of female leadership and the notion of what it means to be a female leader, both for ourselves as women, but also why the world needs us now more than ever. We also looked at this idea of gender gap and how it is really a symptom of self-efficacy and a lack of confidence, as well as some of the root causes as to why we simply can't break through the way we want to.   In the next hour, we lay out a blueprint for female leadership. I truly believe that there's a deficit of leadership systemically in our society and that this is really an opportunity for a new type of leader, a new authenticity, and a new way of doing things. And I believe we all have the capacity to be able to deliver upon this.   So join in on our conversation today as we go really deep into what it means to be a leader as a woman!   Key Takeaways: [1:24] About today's episode. [3:00] Welcoming Adele to the podcast! [3:33] Adele gives us some background on who she is, how she has gotten to where she is today, and why she is so incredibly passionate about this topic that we're discussing! [6:12] What's getting in the way of women truly rising to become leaders? [7:50] What does Adele mean by self-efficacy? Why do some women struggle with this? And how do you build up your self-efficacy? [11:33] Is self-efficacy linked to sports and activities as a youth? How else can we build self-efficacy as women? [14:45] Here's the thing about the ego-mind: it's always going to look for the negative. [16:22] How to begin shifting our mindset to feeling positive and believing we'll succeed. [19:45] Why do women sabotage? [25:40] The secret to being able to do more! [35:43] Adele explains masculine vs. feminine leadership and the importance of balancing both energies. Michael A. Tompkins, PhD, ABPP, co-director of the San Francisco Bay Area Center for Cognitive Therapy (sfbacct.com), delivers an informative overview of mental health issues and contributing factors that play a significant role in how we sleep and the quality of our sleep. Dr. Tompkins is an experienced licensed psychologist, board certified in behavioral and cognitive psychology. He is an accomplished author and outspoken advocate for mental health. Dr. Tompkins has held, and currently holds, significant leadership roles with various, important mental health centers and educational institutions. He is co-director of the San Francisco Bay Area Center for Cognitive Therapy, assistant clinical professor at the University of California, Berkeley, as well as Diplomate and Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. Additionally, Dr. Tompkins works as a trainer and consultant for the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior. Dr. Tompkins discusses his nearly 30-year career in mental health, treating primarily anxiety and mood disorders. He states that most people with these kinds of disorders do experience difficulty with sleep. He details CBTI (cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia) and his work with teens who have anxiety and sleep disorders. Insomnia is defined as a difficulty going to sleep or staying asleep, which limits the amount of restorative sleep that we all need. He explains how sleep disrupters, such as stress or travel, impact the sleep cycle. Further, he states that those who struggle to get quality sleep often worry about it, which increases anxiety and exacerbates the problem, or they try to adjust their sleep schedule, which often does not work because regularity of a sleep schedule is critical for the body to get into a working pattern such that restorative sleep can flourish. Dr. Tompkins' book, The Insomnia Workbook for Teens, lays out a step-by-step process for achieving better sleep, proven-effective strategies to help the sleep deprived get to sleep and stay asleep. The book explains the many and varied reasons we experience insomnia, and offers advice on how to target and deal with sleep disrupters such as caffeine and sugar. Teens especially need quality sleep as their lifestyles today are fast and furious, and it is difficult to rise to the challenges of each day when we're sleep deprived and left feeling exhausted, grouchy, and unprepared for daily tasks. Dr. Tompkins coauthored the book with his esteemed colleague, Dr. Monique Thompson, also a licensed clinical psychologist. Dr. Thompson holds a master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a doctoral degree in clinical psychology from California School of Professional Psychology. She is a certified cognitive therapist and also a Diplomate of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. She treats a myriad of mental health issues such as depression, various anxiety disorders (social anxiety, phobias, and panic), and sleep disorders, as well as attention problems, life transitions, and more. Dr. Tompkins provides an overview of one of their primary goals: focusing on sleep efficiency, which is entirely different than simply looking at quality or quantity of sleep. He discusses various stimulus control strategies and other methods that people can utilize to help get them back on track with their sleep. He states that nearly 80% of the individuals they help with primary insomnia can often benefit from sleep restriction, essentially getting them to stop trying to catch up on sleep, but to focus on having consistent go to bed, and get out of bed times. Additionally he discusses other effective techniques such as breathing exercises, mindful meditation, muscle relaxation, and more. Dr. Tompkins talks about wind down routines and relaxation in general, and the importance of getting one's body and mind to a state in which all systems are ready to fall asleep willingly. The sleep specialist and mental health educator discusses the particular issues that teens face, as they are literally going through an organic change in brain development that causes them to want to begin sleep later in the evening and then sleep in later come morning. And with elevated stress in teens' lives, and the use of social media, all can keep teen minds activated, which leads to sleep disturbances or a general difficulty with falling asleep or staying asleep. He details the types of skills that they teach in CBTI to help teens with their various sleep issues. Dr. Tompkins discusses melatonin and other supplements, but he stresses that chronic insomnia sufferers may not benefit from melatonin, etc. Ultimately, insomnia sufferers must find a way to focus on wind down time and a consistent schedule of sleep. Additionally he talks about genetic inheritances that may contribute to sleep problems, such as chronotype (when we feel like sleeping naturally) and mental arousability, which many insomniacs tend to be prone to. Dr. Tompkins is the author of multiple scholarly articles, chapters on cognitive behavior therapy, and books covering related subjects. He treats adults, adolescents, and children with anxiety disorders, as well as obsessive compulsive disorder, health anxiety, stress, insomnia, repetitive behaviors, elimination disorders, Tourette's and tic disorders.

Wendy Behary is a founding fellow and consulting supervisor for The Academy of Cognitive Therapy (Aaron T. Beck Institute). Wendy has a specialty in treating narcissists and the people who live with and deal with them. She is the author of "Disarming the Narcissist -- surviving and thriving with the self-absorbed” translated in 10 languages. Narcissism and world-class achievement have an interesting relationship. When we think of those who excel on the world stage, it'd be easy to conjure up a story that they have a deep inner belief that they can be the absolute best in the world (that's actually not the case, as we've come to learn from many of the folks on the Finding Mastery Podcast. But for those who do hold that belief -- THE WORLD REVOLVES AROUND ME BECAUSE I’M THAT IMPORTANT AND SPECIAL --is when my antenna tends to attune to the concept of narcissism. It's the excessive self-centered vanity and lack of regard for others that is one of the hallmarks of narcissism. We can all be self-absorbed, needy….. display narcissistic behavior from time to time…that's not what this is about….it's when the sense of grandiosity is so pervasive that it impairs daily functioning with others, and in essence, within themselves. Narcissism is named for the Greek myth of Narcissus—who was a hunter and when he saw his own reflection in the water, he fell in love with it, not realizing it was merely an image. He stared at his reflection until he died. The way I like to simplify narcissism, is that the person can't tell the difference between himself and everyone around him -- everyone then becomes a reflection of his him -- in which gives him the right to use them as extensions of his own self-worth (even if that means public embarrassment). There was an interesting piece of research in the Journal of applied sport psychology, 2013, by Ross Roberts and team -- where they found that the more narcissistic a person was, the less they benefited from psychological skills training - in other words, all you had to do for them, is turn on the lights, and they came alive. If you have ever thought, am I'm living with or working with a narcissist, or am I a narcissist? Wendy provides ways to tease that out. She dives into why so many elite performs are narcissists, and how we can be more effective with living and working with them.

About the book: Psychosis can be associated with a variety of mental health problems, including schizophrenia, severe depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorders. While traditional treatments for psychosis have emphasized medication-based strategies, evidence now suggests that individuals affected by psychosis can greatly benefit from psychotherapy. Treating Psychosis is an evidence-based treatment guide for mental health professionals working with individuals affected by psychosis. Using a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) approach that incorporates acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), compassion-focused therapy (CFT) and mindfulness approaches, this book is invaluable in helping clinicians develop effective treatment for clients affected by psychosis. The guide provides session-by-session clinical interventions for use in individual or group treatment on an inpatient, outpatient, or community basis. The book features 40 reproducible clinical practice forms and a companion website with additional downloadable clinical forms and tools, guided exercises, case examples, and resources. The therapeutic approaches presented are rooted in theory and research, and informed by extensive clinical experience working with client populations affected by psychosis. The approaches outlined in this book offer clinicians and clients the opportunity to partner in developing therapeutic strategies for problematic symptoms to enable those affected by psychosis to work toward valued goals and ultimately live more meaningful lives. This guide emphasizes a compassionate, de-stigmatizing approach that integrates empowering and strengths-oriented methods that place the client’s values and goals at the center of any therapeutic intervention. About the author: Nicola P. Wright, PhD, CPsych, is a clinical psychologist in the schizophrenia program of the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group (The Royal). She also held the roles of chief of psychology and director of training for the Royal’s Psychology Residency Program and served as president of the Canadian Council of Professional Psychology Programs. About the book: When someone is diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), chances are they’ve been living with the symptoms for a long time. People with OCD may have long felt embarrassed by their thoughts and behaviors, which may include fear of contamination, the need for symmetry, pathological doubt, aggressive thoughts, repeating behaviors, and obsessive cleaning. OCD: A Guide for the Newly Diagnosed helps readers understand how OCD works so they can develop better strategies for coping with their symptoms. This pocket guide offers guidance for coping with the diagnosis itself, discusses stigmas related to OCD, and includes help for readers unsure of who they should tell about the diagnosis. Readers also learn about the most effective treatment approaches and easy ways to begin to manage their OCD symptoms.   An OCD diagnosis can be a devastating event, or it can be a catalyst for positive change. Books in the Guides for the Newly Diagnosed series provide readers with all the tools they need to process a diagnosis in the healthiest way possible, and then move forward to manage their symptoms so that the disorder doesn’t get in the way of living a fulfilling life.   This book is a part of New Harbinger Publications’ Guides for the Newly Diagnosed series. The series was created to help people who have recently been diagnosed with a mental health condition. Our goal is to offer user-friendly resources that provide answers to common questions readers may have after receiving a diagnosis, as well as evidence-based strategies to help them cope with and manage their condition, so that they can get back to living a more balanced life.   About the author: Dr. Michael A. Tompkins is the author of six books. His latest book for anxious adults is Anxiety and Avoidance: A Universal Treatment for Anxiety, Panic, and Fear. He is co-director of the San Francisco Bay Area Center for Cognitive Therapy, a diplomate of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, a trainer for the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Research, and assistant clinical professor, University of California, Berkeley.   His book for anxious teenagers, My Anxious Mind: A Teen’s Guide to Managing Anxiety and Panic is a Magination Press/American Psychological Association bestseller and received the 2011 Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies Self-Help Seal of Merit Award.

The Annual Review of Clinical Psychology presents Aaron T. Beck, President Emeritus of the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania and his daughter Judith S. Beck, President of the Beck Institute and Clinical Associate Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania. In this interview, they talk about his life and career, and how he went from having no interest in psychiatry to creating Cognitive Behavior Therapy. This method, initially developed for patients with depression and anxiety, challenges the subject to question his own negative beliefs, which act as prisms and cause distortions in the way events are perceived. Later, research showed that Cognitive Behavior Therapy was also effective in the treatment of schizophrenia. In the future, Aaron T. Beck says, psychotherapy must be firmly rooted in scientific evidence.
