Zwischen 26. Januar und 4. März 2025 veröffentlichten Hulu und Disney+ die neue Thriller-Serie «Paradise», die vom früheren «This Is Us»-Erfinder Dan Fogelman stammt. Wie in «This Is Us» springt das Format in zahlreichen Zeitebenen herum.
This episode of the Fire Sprinkler Podcast is my conversation with Ryan Fogelman. We talk about the challenges of protecting recycling facilities, and how the Fire Rover works to mitigate the loss in this high challenging environment.
Being an expert witness encompasses a wide range of responsibilities and perspectives. Here to discuss some key issues are LNC Pat Iyer, host of this show, and physician and expert Amy Fogelman. We stressed the importance of efficiency in a number of areas. A primary one is the it's essential for an expert to take responsibility for keeping track of cases. The case that it's at the top of your mind may not even be hovering in a lawyer's awareness. Their paralegals are doing their best to keep things organized. It's up to you to save yourself from surprises like, “Remember that case? It's going to court next week.” This kind of efficiency extends to your communications with clients and potential clients. Always reach out to a prospect as quickly as you can and set up systems to assure a smooth flow of discussion and understanding of your policies. Also, be very clear on what kind of work you do. Staying in your lane is essential for an expert. If you take on something out of your area of expertise, it will reflect negatively on your record. Be meticulous about billing. Don't allow a client to accrue a big bill and be as honest as you can in terms of estimating expenses. Overall, Pat and Amy clearly expressed their shared principles of integrity in the performance of their work. When integrity guides you, your chances of success are much higher than those of less dedicated practitioners. Top Mistakes Expert Witnesses Make and How to Avoid Them Why should you never count on an attorney to remember case scheduling? What is the importance of knowing the chain of command in a legal officer? Why do you need an efficient system in place to assure your ability to get back to potential clients as soon as soon as possible? Why is it important not to stray out of your area of expertise? The world is mourning the passing of Willie Mays, one of the greatest (some would say THE greatest) baseball players of all-time. It turns out that FAU has a connection to the icon via a 70-year old scouting report housed just feet from FAU Stadium at the Avron B. Fogelman Museum. Mr. Fogelman answered questions about the scouting report, how it got to FAU and gave his memories of the baseball legend. Also, with sniping taking place between the FAU and USF football programs this week, we went back to discover why there's so much buzz surrounding USF and looked back at their 2023 season...which needs some serious context to tell the FULL, maybe not so spectacular, story of their 7-6 finish. Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies
What does it take for an agency to not only survive but thrive over decades? What mindset and approach enabled this agency owner to pivot and leverage new opportunities? In the challenging world of business, most companies struggle to reach the one-year mark, with even fewer making it to the five-year milestone. Hence, for an agency to make it beyond that it means the owner has weathered more than a few storms and learned to navigate and adapt to a constantly changing industry. Today's guest has steered her business through over two decades of growth, demonstrating the ability to pivot, take calculated risks, and understand her agency's value to ensure its sustainability. From learning the importance of self-renewal to using the pandemic as a time to pivot and grow, tune in to learn about her journey and the changes in the marketing landscape over the past couple of years. Marlo Fogelman is the founder & CEO of Marlo Marketing, an integrated marketing agency specializing in all things hospitality, lifestyle, and CPG. Marlo has owned an agency for over 20 years and today she shares insights on the evolution of her agency from a PR firm to an integrated marketing model. She discusses the variety of services her agency offers, from creative services to full-scale marketing support for clients in the hospitality, lifestyle, and consumer-packaged-goods (CPG) industries. In this episode, we'll discuss: Making time for self-renewal while owning an agency. The foundations of agency rebuilding. Pivoting to retain talent amid the turmoil. How a Career Pivot Led to Accidental Agency Life Despite her initial intentions of practicing law, Marlo felt unfulfilled and unsure of her career path. It was during this time of uncertainty that she stumbled upon a job opportunity in PR, which ultimately changed the course of her career. Working in PR, Marlo discovered her passion for marketing and communication. She excelled in her role, turning around a national brand that had previously struggled in the market. Her success in PR and her passion for quality work and ethical practices guided her decision to start her own agency, specializing in hospitality, lifestyle, and CPG clients. One of the pivotal moments in her career was receiving a call from the CEO of a 27-unit restaurant group, offering the opportunity to take over their marketing efforts. Despite initially hesitating, Marlo accepted the challenge and exceeded all expectations, setting new sales records and achieving unprecedented success for the restaurant group. It was an interesting opportunity to be on the other side and see the results her team could bring controlling both the execution and the strategy instead of just implementing the client's vision. The Entrepreneurial Balancing Act: Finding Time for Self-Renewal Becoming an agency owner meant a shift in how she worked and how the work she did integrated into her life. Instead of spending late nights highlighting legal documents, Marlo now spent time in Nantucket with clients, enjoying wine and meeting interesting people. However, since it didn't feel like work, she didn't take enough time to recharge. This realization came later in her career when she led a team of 45 people and was putting all of herself into building and growing her business. While she would do it all over again, Marlo acknowledges she would also take more time for herself. Taking time for yourself is not just about relaxation and self-care it is also about gaining perspective and clarity. Her advice to agency owners is to take a complete month off from their business to see what breaks and to recharge their energy. This allows individuals to step back, evaluate their priorities, and delegate tasks effectively. Crisis as Catalyst: The Unshakable Foundations of Agency Rebuilding The pandemic dealt a significant blow to Marlo's agency, causing her to lose two-thirds of her clients overnight. Despite the uncertainty and fear surrounding the pandemic, she decided to seize a new opportunity, ultimately rescuing her hospitality based business from complete collapse. Marlo's adaptability and willingness to take calculated risks were crucial for her agency's survival. She recognized the need to pivot her business strategy and embrace new challenges to ensure the agency's continuation. Even in the face of adversity, this readiness to reset and rebuild ultimately preserved her team and kept the business afloat. In hindsight, her decision prevented the need to lay off most of her hospitality practice team, which would have meant starting from scratch. Nonetheless, she encourages agency owners to remember they can always start again and rebuild. Creativity and experience are invaluable tools at their disposal; underestimating them would be a mistake. Staying Curious as a Competitive Advantage: the Perils of Outdated Marketing With 20 years in the industry, Marlo has witnessed many changes and knows how important it is for owners to keep up with them to stay relevant and successful. Continuous learning and curiosity are essential in marketing, so she advises always expanding your skill set and staying up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies. This is how she first fell into her niche, as she noticed that marketers for resorts and senior living communities getting paid a lot of money and weren't doing a good job. Most of all, these marketing fails came from people who had failed to adapt to the changing landscape. They expected to do the same things they did 10-15 years prior and still get great results. Simply relying on outdated strategies and techniques from the past is not enough to succeed in today's fast-paced marketing environment. Furthermore, Marlo touches on the pitfalls of agencies that lack expertise in certain areas but still offer those services to clients and emphasizes the importance of being honest about one's capabilities. This ensures clients receive high-quality services and results that meet their expectations. How Proper Pricing Can Be the Key to Work-Life Balance One common misconception peddled online is that running an agency allows for a life filled with endless vacations and leisurely days at the beach. While achieving success certainly requires hard work, Marlo rejects the notion that agency owners should be constantly overwhelmed and working non-stop. If you find yourself facing a perpetual state of busyness and overwhelm, you may be undervaluing your services. By prioritizing the value of your expertise over your time, you can justify increasing your prices to better reflect the value you offer to clients. Start by raising prices for new prospects, and seeing the results, you'll work up the courage to raise prices for legacy clients as well. While some existing clients may leave after a price increase, this will create space for new clients who appreciate the value you bring. In reality, many agency owners report minimal client turnover following a price increase, as clients recognize and appreciate the expertise their agency provides. This shift not only results in a significant revenue boost but also reduces the workload. Regularly assessing and adjusting pricing to align with the value you deliver is crucial. This proactive approach to pricing can lead to enhanced revenue and a more sustainable business model in the long term. Do You Want to Transform Your Agency from a Liability to an Asset? Joined by returning guest Noel Fogelman, Mike and Dan remember Justin Mapletoft, a highly-touted Islanders prospect from before the social media era. A decorated junior player and very strong two-way center in the AHL, Mapletoft's game never quite translated to the NHL. And on an Islanders team that was suddenly strong down the middle - thanks to the acquisitions of Alexei Yashin and Michael Peca - he didn't get much of a chance to show what he could do. Mapletoft was around the organization for a long time, but missed the time of podcasts, blogs, YouTube and the like, which is both good and bad for a prospect that fans had high hopes for. Noel has spoken to Justin and tells us his thoughts on his days with the Islanders, the time he considered asking for a trade and a very surprising regret he's been carrying around for years. We begin the fall holidays with Rosh Hashana, the Jewish new year, which is the day where we crown G-d as King of the world, and receive a judgement for what our life will hold for us during the upcoming year. Rebbetzin Chanie then explains that between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur are the Days of Awe where we have an opportunity to repent for our sins and apologize to those whom we have hurt. On Yom Kippur, our judgements from Rosh Hashana are sealed. Rebbetzin Chanie explains that on Yom Kippur, Moshe received the second set of tablet on which the 10 commandments were written. This second giving of the 10 commandments is a symbol that the connection between a Jew and G-d is unbreakable, no matter what a person has done. (The first set of 10 commandments were brought down by Moshe on the holiday of Shavuot. However, when Moshe saw Jewish worshiping the Golden Calf, he smashed the stone tablets on which the 10 commandments were written, and broke them. Therefore, he needed to get a second set from G-d. It's this second set of 10 commandments, which were not broken, that Moshe gave to the Jewish people on Yom Kippur.) Right after Yom Kippur, we celebrate a holiday called Sukkot. We go out of our secure homes and eat (and sometimes sleep) in a flimsy hut called a Sukkah, which is built outside. The walls of the Sukkah are like the arms of a person, enveloping you in a hug and holding you close. This symbolizes G-d's closeness and love for each and every Jew, no matter where they are in their level of observance. On Sukkot, we shake 4 species. Each specie represents a different type of Jew--all of whom are beloved by G-d. The etrog symbolizes the person who learns Torah and keep the mitzvot (commandments.) The lulav symbolizes the person who learns Torah, but doesn't keep most of the mitzvot. The hadassim symbolize the person who keeps the mitzvot, but who doesn't learn Torah. The aravot symbolize the person who doesn't learn Torah and doesn't keep the mitzvot. All the species are shaken together and represent the fact that all Jews are needed, and we all complete each other. The eighth day of Sukkot is a holiday called Shemini Atzeret. The number 8 is above nature, and symbolizes that G-d's love for us is above anything that any of us do; no matter what, G-d loves us unconditionally. The bond between a Jew and G-d is unbreakable. On Shemini Atzeret, G-d stays close to us for one more day, giving us strength for the entire year! The day after Shemini Atzeret is Simchat Torah. On this day, we finish reading the entire Torah, and we dance around happily with the Torah. The Torah scroll is closed when we are dancing to symbolize that any Jew, whether they are well-versed in Torah or not, is invited to partake in the holiday because they are beloved by G-d. Dan and special guest Noel Fogelman revisit one of the most bizarre episodes in recent Islanders history, the many-layered acquisition of "Captain Canada" Ryan Smyth. They look at all of the crazy factors leading up to the 2007 trade deadline and how the Islanders came out of nowhere to grab the power forward after a stalled contract negotiation with Edmonton. They talk about his productive - if unmemorable - time on the ice, his unceremonious exit in free agency and the Islanders "legacy" Smyth left behind and probably doesn't even know he has. Along the way they laugh about emotional goodbyes, dramatic news reports and players who should never have left their original teams (and who all somehow ended up playing for the Islanders). Amy G. Fogelman, MD is Board Certified in Internal Medicine with 17 years of experience seeing patients at ambulatory practices in the Boston area. She went to med school at BU and stayed in Boston for her internal medicine residency at Beth Israel. She did a chief year in Primary Care at the VA Hospital in West Roxbury. She has been awarded prizes in clinical excellence and leadership at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). While consulting for personal injury and medical malpractice firms in the Boston area, Dr. Fogelman noticed a void in the consulting field, which her consulting firm, MED LAW, seeks to fill. MED LAW Consulting, LLC uses this Primary Care model, where Dr. Fogelman serves as the litigator's own personal medical expert for the entire case as if the lawyer had an in-house physician on staff and now she teaches. In 2020, she began formally advising medical professionals on the ins-and-outs of medical expert witness work and even has a course. We discuss common misconceptions among physicians about this type of work, how to get started, how to avoid screwing up your first few cases, the compensation and why one should avoid just doing defense work. "Whoever casually first said 'All good things must come to an end' never had to end their favorite thing," Fogelman wrote."While sad to have just 1 season left, also grateful to NBC for letting us end the show how, and when, we always intended. We'll work hard to stick the landing. #ThisIsUs," he concluded. The show's Twitter account also shared Fogelman's tweet along with photos from the five seasons so far.Mandy Moore, who stars as Rebecca Pearson on the show, also addressed the upcoming conclusion on her Instagram Story. "I'm already VERY emotional about my favorite job coming to an end. BUT.... We have a whole season to wrap things up the way it was always intended," she wrote.NBC announced its fall schedule on Friday and the premiere of season 6 of This Is Us, which will be delayed for the midseason lineup in early 2022, with 18 episodes airing uninterrupted. On Wednesday, a source confirmed to PEOPLE that season 6 of This Is Us will be the last for the time-jumping drama, which first premiered on Sept. 20, 2016, and has featured actors Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, Chrissy Metz, Sterling K. Brown, Justin Hartley, Susan Kelechi Watson and Chris Sullivan. In January 2020, Fogelman spoke about the show's eventual ending to the Los Angeles Times, telling the outlet about the progression of storylines ultimately wrapping with an episode that will "have a lot of the information about what's happened to this family, and what will be left is some resolution," adding, "I think when the show eventually comes to an end, I think in the best way, it'll be very quiet and normal. That's always been the plan because, at the end of the day, it's a story about this kind of regular family."NBC previously renewed the show in May 2019 through season 6. However, the current season 5 of This Is Uswas cut short by two episodes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed production multiple times throughout 2020 and caused a late start last fall. The final two episodes of season 5 will air May 18 (9 p.m. ET) and May 25 (10 p.m. ET), both on NBC.

For confidentiality reasons, names and amounts of any settlements have been removed. However, the facts are real and these are the cases we handle on a day to day basis. [music] Justin: On today's episode of Hill Law Firm Cases, I've got a good friend of mine and previous co-counsel and classmate and friend and all of those wonderful things, Josh Fogelman, who's a really established and accomplished personal injury lawyer in Austin in the firm of Fogelman & Von Flatern, FVF Law, and he's sitting here with a really cute hat with a bird FVF on it. Josh and I had the pleasure and benefit and honor of trying a case, I guess it would be a little past a year ago now. Josh: That's right. Last spring. Justin: In Williamson County, so Georgetown. In our industry, there's always good places to file a lawsuit and try a lawsuit. Then historically, there's bad places to file and try a lawsuit. Georgetown's always been considered maybe one of the worst places in the state of Texas because the understanding is juries don't think cases are worth much money is generally the idea, right? Josh: Yes, it's just Williamson County north of Austin is a really conservative, historically Republican county. You've got at least the reputation of having very conservative jurors there. Personal Injury Law conservative jurors tend to have a little bit of a more conservative viewpoint of valuation on personal injury cases. Justin: While it shouldn't be political, this idea of tort reform and runaway juries has permeated parties. The Republican Party has been the party carrying the mantle of we need to do stuff to rein in jury verdicts. Right or wrong, that sort of has permeated politics. It's become part of the discussion and that's bled over into some venues. What we realized in Williamson County is maybe that isn't true or maybe the demographics are changing. We ended up with a diverse jury in that case. Our foreperson was a 19-year-old woman with a nose ring if I recall. Josh: Yes. What was interesting about our Williamson County jury is it reminded me a lot of our Travis County juries. I think that that's a lot to do with the growth of Austin and a lot of the Austin mentality being pushed outside of the city and county limits up into neighboring jurisdictions, neighboring counties like Williamson County. Justin: What we didn't even see in the jury selection is we didn't really see a whole lot of far-right or anti-lawyer or anti-tort thinking either. We had a pretty fair jury. If I recall in our panel, we had a whole lot of people who had been screwed over by insurance companies before. Josh: Yes, that's true. Beyond that, we also had a really fair judge. I was really impressed and surprised with the judges leaning up there. As far as the Republican judiciary is concerned, I thought that we got some pretty good and fair rulings from Judge Lambeth up there in Williamson County. Justin: She let us try our cases. You get judges sometimes that are very involved in the trial, the case in terms of they want to give their two cents or they want to guide the way the trial is working. She let us try our case. She let the defense do what they wanted for the most part within the rules. She let us do what we wanted and she let us have as much time as we needed, which I was pretty surprised by. From the jury standpoint, you...

Law school classmate, friend, co-counsel, and fellow injury lawyer, Joshua Fogelman joins Hill Law Firm Cases podcast to discuss injury law, San Antonio, and trying case. He also discusses the business of personal injury law and opening multiple offices. Transcript: Justin Hill: Welcome to Hill Law Firm Cases, a podcast discussing real world cases handled by Justin Hill and the Hill Law Firm. For confidentiality reasons, names and amounts of any settlements have been removed. However, the facts are real. These are the cases we handle on a day-to-day basis. [music] Welcome to Hill Law Firm Cases. I'm here with Josh Fogelman, again. The point of this podcast is I want to talk about the cases we handle on a day-to-day basis, the issues we run into every day, so to give an inside look at a personal injury law firm in San Antonio. Josh has worked in San Antonio. He has a law firm in Austin called Fogelman Von Flatern. Or is it fvflaw.com? Josh Fogelman: That's right, fvlawfirm.com. Justin Hill: fvlawfirm.com. They're a great plaintiffs personal injury firm up there, handle stuff all over the state of Texas. I wanted to get Josh on here and just get some sort of off the cuff responses, some insights on what he thinks about the personal injury, profession and practice. We've previously talked about a case we tried to verdict the UIM case. Then we worked another case involving a premises liability, sort of a strange case that involved air conditioning companies and a hotel company and strange medical experts and all kinds of stuff. It was a real complex case. It was a lot of fun. Let me tell you. My favorite thing about practicing law, the one favorite thing I get to do in the finite is, I like to cross-examine expert witnesses. I found that too often, they're unprepared and too often, they are pompous in their unpreparedness. It really creates this great situation where you've got somebody who is very proud of themselves, very confident and has not prepared. That is just a great situation for lawyers that want to spend the time preparing, knowing they're talking to somebody smarter than them, knowing they've got to overcome this hurdle, but the same time knowing that other side probably didn't prepare and stay up as late as you did or spend the last five days getting ready. What's one of your favorite things to do within the working up of a case or within litigation that you enjoy? Josh: I really enjoy the medicine side of what we do. I love learning about how injuries affect the body, how the body recovers from injuries and really trying to visualize what's going on inside someone's body that's causing them some sort of pain or impairment. I just really enjoy that stuff. Justin Hill: I started doing more and more of it. Do you use the visual aids of the medical illustrations much in your cases? Josh: Yes, we're starting to do that more and more as well. Trying to help a jury visualize and understand the lingo of what it is that you're talking about so that they can get through the medical terminology that can be cumbersome for anybody to understand and then helping to paint a picture for them in a way that they can relate in the real world so that they can really understand the gravity of what is going on inside our clients' bodies. We use full stuff. Justin Hill: I have a case right now. We did the video tour of the injury. It's a whole video that kind of hits each injury area of the body and plays it out. I think I still like the old big boards better with just a big drawing with labels because I think there's a dramatic effect of carrying and holding a board. It's not a video clip, which any more trials got so many videos and at one less I think I like. One thing I think is very hard in our profession, from the medical standpoint is, I think it's very hard to take the deposition of one of your clients treating doctors. There's a certain amount of distress, I think, between...

Have you thought about the role transitions play in your life? We move through transitions daily. MFML teacher, Clive Fogelman suggests ways to embrace times of uncertainty During our lives, we might encounter a range of bigger transitions such as changing jobs, entering a new stage of life, moving and illness. But there are also more subtle transitions such as shifting from work to relaxation, the beginning and end of the weekend and returning from a holiday. Transitions, even exciting ones, can be daunting. They are filled with uncertainty and without always being conscious of it; we sometimes avoid them and what comes up for us for during them. Transitions in yoga In yoga, we also encounter transitions, for example between time on our mat and the day as a whole; the period at the beginning of the practice before we start moving, and the period of rest at the end. With a home practice it can be especially tempting to cut out these parts. We might feel restless or find it difficult to stop and feel an urgency to move on. There are also the transitions during our practice. One example is how we get from one posture to another and how we move during our flow. Again during those times we might witness a tendency to rush through and to want to get into the posture as quickly as possible. We might feel a resistance to slowing down, exploring the space in between postures as well as holding the postures themselves. The Challenge of Transitional Space There may be several reasons we are uncomfortable with the transitional space in life and in our yoga practise. We may have become so used to having a direction and targets that it feels unfamiliar just to be and let the experience unfold more gradually. The transitional space can sometimes feel endless and we might feel anxious about being feeling lost and directionless. During transitions we often have time for more reflection but perhaps feelings and thoughts might appear that challenge assumptions we have of ourselves, how we live and relate, and in yoga how we are approaching our practise and what we really want from it. Pause and rest to connect To manage the the transitional space we often set ourselves goals. Goals can provide a sense of control in the face of the unknown. Everything can then be evaluated and defined in terms of outcome and achievement. In our yoga practice, we might start targeting postures and become fixated on being able to do a certain posture in a certain way. As a result however, we might be less connected to what is actually happening in our body. We might not be aware for example, that we are overusing or underusing certain parts of our body or that a part of the body is starting to feel strain. That’s why taking rest poses during our practise can be so important. Not just to rest, but to pause and take a moment to more fully connect with how we are feeling and how we might want to approach our practise. Something I often ask myself in the transitional space during practise is, “how can my practise meet me where I am right now?” We can ask the same in day to day life when we take a moment to slow down and pause – “how can life meet me where I am right now?” Less attachment, more curiosity When we become less attached outcomes, we can start to fully embrace the journey both in life and with yoga. Our whole experience starts to open out. Take the example of walking around day to day. Often, we are so focused on our destination (getting from a to b) that we remain unaware of what is happening around us. We might not notice the subtle shifts of seasons, the changing colours and smells and others changes to the environment. We might not notice someone who needs our help. One thing I find helpful is to vary my walking routes. Rather than take the same route that tends to keep me on autopilot, I find consciously choosing a route that is guided by how I am feeling keeps me more connected and present in the experience...

In this episode, we interview Ryan Fogelman, V.P. of Strategic Partnerships at Fire Rover, about waste and recycling facility fires and fire protection.
We started making wine in our 2nd floor, white-carpeted apartment in 2008 on Sweetzer Avenue in West Hollywood. In 2013 we became a bonded winery and moved our production to a commercial facility. We focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sourced from the Sta. Rita Hills and Santa Maria Valley in Santa Barbara County. We also search out great vineyards with other varietals, such as Grenache, Syrah, Dornfelder, and Sauvignon Blanc. We opened our tasting room in Lompoc on Bastille Day 2017.
In his late 20's, Clive Fogelman lost both his parents within six months. He was then diagnosed with bowel cancer a few years later. Clive credits both yoga and meditation as significant tools for dealing with his anxiety through this challenging time and says that by using these things as a 'toolkit', everyone can benefit. Whether it's focusing on your breathing while waiting for the kettle to boil, or paying more attention to your surroundings when walking to work, everybody can put a little more mindfulness into their day. We spoke about: - The importance of 'inviting yourself' to connect with your body and how you feel. - Breathing techniques to deal with anxiety and stress instantly. - Bringing yourself back to the present. - How becoming more self-aware can help you deal with everyday emotions. - Taking all experiences (good and bad) and seeing them as something to observe - without judgment or feeling like they're going against you. - The power of the mind and belief. - How to use a mindfulness pause. - Letting the journey present itself, and dealing with whatever is part of it without fear dictating how you feel.
