Leila Day, journalist, co-creator/co-host of The Stoop, and freelance podcast show-runner, is our guest this week. She and Drew sat down for an in-depth conversation about story, belonging, and the Hoffman Process. Always a lover of story and storytelling, Leila shares that she fell in love with podcasting as a creative way to format personal storytelling. She says podcasting keeps her curious; when she's not curious, she knows something is off. Leila realized a lack of curiosity was a lack of interest in others and life. With this realization, she knew the light within her was dimming. This is what brought her to the Hoffman Process. At the beginning of her Process, Leila kept to herself and her teachers noticed. Being there felt like she often felt in her childhood - the only Black kid surrounded by white kids. She found herself observing rather than engaging. Her teacher encouraged her to take control of this pattern and actively deconstruct her pattern of disengaging under these circumstances. Leila did and what happened in response was powerful. She realized she was stunting her growth in a place built for her to grow. Her curiosity and light were reignited in her remaining days at the Process because she chose to do it differently. She reclaimed the wholeness and fullness of who she truly is. We hope you enjoy this intimate, honest, loving conversation with Leila and Drew. More about Leila Day: Leila Day is a journalist and co-creator and co-host of The Stoop. An award-winning podcast, The Stoop focuses on Black stories. She won the Gracie Award for an episode on The Stoop titled, Inside These Walls. Leila received her Gracie at The Alliance For Women In Media Foundation's 48th Annual Gracie Awards Gala. She's also a freelance podcast show-runner who has hosted and edited podcasts for Marvel, CBS Universal, NPR, Netflix, and many others. As a former NPR station reporter, she's often speaking on unique ways to combine journalism and storytelling. Follow Leila on Instagram and Twitter/X. Follow The Stoop on Instagram. As mentioned in this episode: The Stoop: A podcast about stories from the Black Diaspora. Higher Ground Media: Podcasts for the Obama's production network. In this episode of Guerrilla History, we are lucky to be joined by a special guest in Cuba as well as a special guest host whom many of you will likely remember from past episodes of the show. Here, we bring on Cuban journalist Liz Oliva Fernández from Belly of the Beast to discuss Bob Menendez (who was just convicted on corruption charges), US-Cuba policy, and how these are related. This episode is being based off of two documentaries that Liz hosted for Belly of the Beast - Hardliner of the Hudson which takes a deep look at Menendez, and Uphill on the Hill which is an examination of recent US-Cuba policy. Watch these, and subscribe to Belly of the Beast on YouTube! Adnan was not able to join Henry for this one, so we drafted in our friend and former guest Taylor Genovese as a special guest host. Taylor is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Dutchess Community College, an editor at Iskra Books, and a documentary filmmaker. You may remember Taylor as a guest from two previous episodes - Peasants' Revolt of 1381 and Art and the Working Class. Major thanks to Taylor for coming in on relatively short notice for this one! ⭐️ Congrats to producer Katrina B on her second Gracie Award two years in a row! While most of the time we hear Nessa getting on Katrina B about her seemingly endless to-do list and missed deadlines, in this episode Nessa wears her heart out on her sleeve and they share a really heartfelt moment as Nessa shows her appreciation for the work that she puts in! ❤️ But we probably shouldn't get too used to that! The two of them quickly jump back into their usual back and forth... this time discussing why they believe what led to Justin Timberlake's irresponsible night in the Hamptons and arrest for driving while intoxicated. The two have some VERY interesting thoughts on the matter! Next in another AI development, Nessa and Katrina explore how having AI avatars of themselves to attend meetings and take notes would be the best thing in their lives! What do YOU think about that? Finally, these two reminisce about the singer Selena and discuss the docuseries Selena And Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them and the impending possibility that her killer Yolanda Saldivar may be up for parole next year

Send us a Text Message.Has your mental health ever been impacted by the things you see on the news? You're not alone. In this episode of From Survivor to Thriver, we sat down with Julie Rose, who struggled with this to the point that she started avoiding it completely. Today, she shares the story of how she learned to manage her anxiety and start sharing the news in her own way that leaves people feeling informed and empowered rather than anxious and scared. Hearing the news doesn't have to fill you with dread and anxiety. Join us as Julie shares how there really is a better way to be informed about the world without sacrificing your mental health. Julie Rose has been a radio journalist for 20 years, reporting for NPR local stations and network shows like Morning Edition and All Things Considered. In 2015, she began hosting a nationally syndicated live interview show on Sirius XM 143 called Top of Mind. But, after several years on the air every day, she began fighting the urge to avoid the news completely, because of how anxious and angry it made her feel. She knew she couldn't be alone in that. So, in 2022, a new format for Top of Mind became the answer. Now a weekly podcast, the show tackles tough topics in a way that's honest and probing, but also leaves people feeling empathetic and empowered. Julie has since become an advocate for bridging divides in public discourse, something needed more now than ever before because news avoidance and polarized information sources are a serious problem. She feels strongly that we can't just avoid the news and expect to build the communities we want to live in. Julie has received a Gracie Award and multiple Edward R. Murrow Awards for her work in her field. In today's episode, we cover: The impact the news can have on your mental healthThe power of simply acknowledging what you're feeling How Julie came to create her podcast Balancing solution-oriented, unbiased views on the newsThe importance of curiosity and creative thinking in conversations What to do instead of skimming the news headlinesWe hope you enjoyed this conversation with Julie! What is happening in America – where apparently women who don't want to be pregnant have to be pregnant, and women who want to be pregnant have to not be pregnant?!? In today's conversation with Jessica Yellin, former chief White House Correspondent and founder of News Not Noise, we discuss exactly what happened in the recent Alabama ruling that halted IVF treatments, what it means for access to fertility treatments, which states could be next – and how it is all an attack on reproductive rights. We discuss the fetal personhood movement's trajectory that would jeopardize birth control and even same-sex marriage. We also talk about how to stay motivated and involved in these collective struggles (and the election season ahead) while also taking care of yourself.
