Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 555 of the Chasing Tone Podcast -  The Wampler Cryptid is a beast of a fuzz pedal - and we try a super inexpensive compressor! Somebody has been hanging out with legends and it is not Brian this time and Richard stuffs his face as a result. He had been to see Albert Lee and was mightily impressed. He learned some interesting and encouraging tips by having front row seats and is excited to tell us about it and he is also inspired and may have found the fountain of youth before the caffeine kicks in.Have you ever heard about the Indian Tar Pit squid? It is a type of cryptid that inspired the concept for the all new Wampler Cryptid Fuzz pedal. The guys touch on it before Richard shoots off in a completely random direction because he has bought an incredibly cheap pedal. He is then confused by film ratings. The industry mourns the passing of a legend so the guys touch on it and Blake gives us a bit of history to add context. Brian discovers he was in a book and it took him by surprise and also did an interview with some folk from Richard's part of the world. Blake has to leave early and so the guys go on a deep dive into an inexpensive pedal brand and are really impressed. Tweed amp woes, Chainsaw juggling, We released a new fuzz, Hello Sailor, Germanium plans...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Course, Merch and DIY mods:https://www.guitarpedalcourse.com/https://www.wamplerdiy.com/Find us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdVrg4Wl3vjIxonABn6RfWwContact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show

Hello Sailor! Jason from 'It's Not That Bad' podcast jumps onboard the 'Defend It Yourself' ship to review The Pirate Movie (1982), an Australian musical romantic comedy loosely based on The Pirates of Penzance. "Think Pirates of the Caribbean crossed with YMCA's 'In The Navy', throw a bit of Baywatch in there, a bit of Grease, a bit of Grease 2, the non-shark bits of Jaws and the dreamlike quality of Scrubs and you're about halfway there". My Guest: "It's the show that does its best to defend the unfairly maligned movies, to find the silver linings in the films deemed “less than great”. Every week, host Jason Whissell is joined by a guest to discuss a movie that has been poorly rated by the critics or by the fans" , description from their website: https://notthatbadcast.com/home/ Discussion Points: -Bus stops advertisements. -Taking the context and the time that the film was made into account when watching the film. -The Pirate King and his fantastic lines, played charmingly by Ted Hamilton. -There's a lot to be said for a film that just makes you laugh. -A lot of Jason's examples go completely over Sean's head. -Sean drops Casualty (1986-Present) trivia but gets his Grease (1978) trivia desperately wrong. -Sean gets distracted by The Batman (2022) once Jason brings it up. It's been a while. -Jason and Sean discuss World War Z (2013). -Sean ironically discusses editing. Raised Questions: -Do you believe film critics? -Did they get past introductions in the 80's? -Where do the Ninjas turn up? -How bad does this film look on paper? -This film got how many many Razzie nominations? -What does Jason think of the musical score, did it damage the film? -The self-awareness of the film? -What do critics want? -Are films with a long runtime necessary? -Is this film a perfect 'bad day' film? Random Recommendations: -Repo The Genetic Opera (2008). -House of Wax (2005). -Bottom (TV Series 1991-1995). -The Pope's Exorcist (2023). -Clue (1985). Trailer: FilmFloggers: www.filmfloggers.com Review It Yourself now has a Patreon! The Chats make rambunctious old-school punk peppered with their cheeky, irreverent sense of humor.

She also expertly curates her own Hello Sailor label and has a knack for transporting you from Brooklyn to Bahia and back again whenever she plays one of her expressive and eclectic sets. This week's colourful selection is one packed with familiar cornerstones like electro, disco and house, but all reimagined through a Latin lens and served up with plenty of South American flair. Joining the dots between the old and the new, the classic and the unknown, it's a steamy and sunny mix that is perfect for parties inside, outside, online or in your headphones. In 2009, as part of an afternoon celebrating Waitakere City and West Auckland, Going West guests heard the story of iconic New Zealand television series Outrageous Fortune and the fictional West family of West Auckland.  The multi-award winning creative team of Rachel Lang and James Griffin, along with actor Robyn Malcolm (Cheryl West), were joined in conversation by Auckland Theatre Company founder, actor and director Simon Prast. This session also celebrated the publication of Outrageous Fortune: the West Family Album, a book byhttps://www.fishpond.co.nz/c/Books/a/Lang%2C+Rachel ( Rachel Lang), James https://www.fishpond.co.nz/c/Books/a/Griffin%2C+James (Griffin) and Tim Balme, published by West Auckland publisher Peter Dowling of Oratia Media. Outrageous Fortune was created for Henderson-based South Pacific Pictures and ran on TV3 from 2005 to 2010. It is the longest running drama series made in New Zealand, and one of the few embraced by an Australian audience. It spawned a US and an English version, and even aired in Eastern Europe. Starting in 2015, TV3 screened a spinoff series, Westside. Set in the 1970s and 80s, the series followed the younger years of key characters Ted and Rita West. The final episode played on November 16 2020, bringing to a close the West family television saga.  Both Outrageous Fortune and Westside shamelessly championed New Zealand music, starting with its use of Westie favourite Gutter Black (by Hello Sailor) as its theme music.  Both series also featured buildings and locations across West Auckland, including the brick and tile West family residence in Te Atatu South.

Harry Lyon is the guitarist and founding member of iconic New Zealand band Hello Sailor. The band formed in 1975 and lasted five years before going separate ways. Each member remained busy forming other bands and releasing solo albums and soon Hello Sailor reunited and continued to record and tour up until the untimely passing of Dave McArtney in 2013 and Graham Brazier in 2015. For many years Harry was the Director of MAINZ (Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand) and in 2018 Harry released his first solo album To The Sea. This week Hello Sailor are re-releasing their 1994 record 'The Album' on vinyl and as a digital release with bonus tracks. To celebrate, Harry and I talk about the new release as well as some of the highs and lows of Hello Sailors adventures in L.A. and Australia. Harry Lyon! Great guy, great chat!

This week on the podcast is my friend, Meg Earle from Hello Sailor Tees. She creates merch inspired by pop culture and feminism that I personally love and I have a feeling that you would too. We met over 10 years ago while I was working at a record store and she’s been one of my favorite people to talk music with. She’s got an incredible taste in culture and art and I think that shines in her work. We talk about how feminism and pop culture inspires her work, her family’s roots in the movie industry, and how she became successful just because she simply started with no expectations. We also get into her favorite movies and music, because honestly, having her on without breaking down her favorites would be such a missed opportunity. If you have a creative project that you’re scared to share or not quite sure how to get started, then I think you’ll enjoy this episode. www.hellosailortees.com Check out the Swans of Never Patreon! December 25 is a special day every year around this time, and so it's fitting that we bring you Episode 25 this holiday season. Our most recent episode features Joe and Katy Kindred of Charlotte's runaway hit restaurants Kindred and Hello, Sailor! Let us first acknowledge the return of Page's favorite podcast intro on this episode. While we will always thank our buddy Penn Holderness for whipping together the intro you've heard over the previous 24 episodes in about 39 seconds, it was the throwaway clip of Jake you just heard that will likely kick things off going forward. We're either terribly sorry, or you're very welcome. Now, on to our guests... Joe and Katy have had a mildly successful foray into restaurateurship. After long, winding careers in the industry, spanning Charlotte, Chicago and San Francisco, and then back to Charlotte, the couple launched Kindred in Davidson. To say it was a rocket ship not only in the greater Queen City-area but nationwide would be putting it mildly. Kindred hit every "Top New _____" list in 2015, and it helped transform historic downtown Davidson in the process. On the heels of this success, the couple turned their attention to Lake Norman, where they took an old, declining shore front restaurant and flipped it into Hello, Sailor. In the span of a couple of years and a few miles, the Kindreds redefined night life in greater Charlotte. Joe's the chef and Katy's the brains behind the look and feel of their businesses and brand. The two talk about how they're raising their three young children as "restaurant kids," about all of the twists and turns they endured en route to their success and about how important it is for couples to continue to date even after marriage. In fact, they were headed to grab sushi immediately following the podcast. We loved them, and we think you will too. We can’t thank Joe and Katy enough for joining us on this episode, and as always, big thanks to Garrett Tichy, Hygge and Richard Brooke for having us as a member of their inaugural Hygge Podcast Residency! My trip to Cornelius and Davidson, NC, was a trip down nostalgia’s lane. As a native Charlottean, I’d spent time at the lake growing up, and one of my first writing gigs was as a features writer at Lake Norman Times, so when I went to visit Joe and Katy Kindred at Kindred and Hello, Sailor, I was having all the feels checking out my old stomping grounds. But that was just the beginning -- friend and chef Craig Deihl, from the recently closed Charleston, SC faves Artisan Meat Share and Cypress, is now the CDC at Hello, Sailor, and then there was the calabash shrimp on the menu, the fried bologna sandwich, and oh, the hushpuppies. It’s a wonder I held it together for this interview. But it’s more than just about me and my memory lane here. Kindred, and now Hello, Sailor, are hot restaurants, and not just in the Queen City area, but with people such as the James Beard Foundation, Bon Appetit, and Eater. These restaurant teams craft a 360 experience that is grounded in exceptional food in laid back settings, and I am here to attest that the meals I had this day are two of the best I’ve had in a year of eating. And these people make me laugh, as you’ll hear in the following.

Amy had the book and chose Edith Wharton's 1911 novel Ethan Frome and I chose the 1999 movie The Boondock Saints. We talk snow imagery, horrid amounts of Willem Dafoe scenery chewing and why Ethan Frome in general is not the best choice to assign to high school students. So much so that the landscape, the tides and even gravity are not arranged in the ways they have been for most of our lifetimes. So tonight on AVFM radio, we'll be talking about what that means for the human rights of men and boys, and more specifically, what that means in terms of real hazard and physical risk for individuals in this human rights movement. Michael Lonsdale is back! And this time he's the good guy, tracking down an international killer known only by the code name "Hello Sailor!" or whatever the French equivalent is. Join me as, despite my cold, I put on a perfect French accent (London, France, to be exact) and cue up this tense Cold-War-era thriller about how terrible the French army is at killing people. Despite the flabby meticulous plotting and the long luxurious running time, the pacing is excellent. I explore what could have been cut without hurting the film and what could have been tightened up to help it. And I mock the hilarious French cars. Oh, and bonus if you watch along with me: French ta-tas. Ooh la la!
