Victorians know life in lockdown better than anybody else in Australia. On the three previous occasions the state has gone into a lockdown, the measure eventually achieved its aims. But this time it's a little different, with a new, more infectious variant spreading in the community, and at least one case that’s still a mystery. So is the lockdown working so far? And could it drag on past Friday? Today on The Signal we hear about the successes and pitfalls of the latest iteration of Victoria's COVID strategy, and ask what lessons the state has learned on the way. "The threat to the total lifting of lockdown restrictions scheduled for a little over three weeks is growing. Rising cases of Covid-19, 75% of which are thought to be the Indian Variant, are being closely monitored by Government scientists. The Prime Minister commented yesterday that England may have to wait for the full lifting of restrictions, although he went on to say that he saw nothing in the data that suggests a delay will be necessary. The fallout from Dominic Cummings’ comments to a Parliamentary Committee this week appears to have fallen almost totally on the shoulders of Health Minister Nick Hancock. Well, it means that it's probably more infectious and that might be what is giving it the edge. But is it more deadly or more resistant to vaccines? That's on today's Coronacast. Also on today's show:* My parents have both been fully vaccinated with Pfizer in the UK. With the number of so-called 'Indian variant cases' on the rise, ITV News Presenter Lucrezia Millarini puts your questions to our Science Editor Tom Clarke.Cases of the B.1.617.2 variant, first detected in India, jumped by more than 2,000 in a week in mid-May.So should we be worried by the rise in cases, is the vaccine as effective against this variant, and what does this all mean for the planned easing of lockdown in England on June 21?
"The success of the UK’s vaccination programme has allowed the country to proceed without any problem along the path towards a full reopening of the economy. There are clearly still several bumps in the road to be negotiated and having come so far, there is genuine concern that the Indian Variant that has been seen in several areas of the country could delay the whole process. Prime Minister Boris Johnson remains cautious, saying all the right things about maintaining social distancing etc., so unless there is a major change to the current data the full removal of restrictions remains on schedule. Inflation was always known to be the likely outcome of the measures that have been put in place to help economies survive the Pandemic. The rate at which price increases will take place appears to be varied according to how the stimulus has been applied. Govt to announce in days if variant will delay further easing of Covid rules in England
Radio Sweden brings you a round-up of the main news in Sweden on May 18th, 2021. Presenter: Dave Russell Producer: Frank Radosevich
Due to the graciousness of Her Majesty’s Government, we’re starting this week with a party at the Young house! (No, not in the Young house, just at the Young house.) We talk about the BBC’s decision not to cover last Saturday’s anti-lockdown protest – in spite of roughly 100,000 people attending – the forthcoming march on May 29th, whether the “Indian Variant” will stop the PM from lifting all restrictions on June 21st as planned, and why are so many media types promoting the vaccine? Then there are musings on a variety of topics: Why weren’t James and Toby admitted into the inner sanctum of the British Establishment when they were at Oxford? Would the guys cut it at being MI6 spies? Mali gives Toby the chance to be a hero (again) and the wife remains unimpressed (still) In culture corner, Toby has a confession and James praises The Pursuit of Love. This week’s opening sound of the PM courtesy of The Telegraph (via YouTube.)
"The Roadmap for Recovery announced several months ago by Prime Minister Boris Johnson has hit a bump in the road with the spread of the Indian Variant in the U.K. Last week provided a chilling reminder of the Government’s perceived dithering over the timing of lockdowns and other measures as the first and second waves began. There is growing confusion about both the seriousness of the outbreaks together with the effectiveness of the vaccines that are currently being administered. Words like hope, expect, and believe carry no weight without the endorsement of the scientific community." Professor Christina Pagel, from University College London and a member of Independent Sage, joins to discuss the contagiousness, potency and morbidity of the new variant and the wisdom of going ahead with the reopening of the economy at this point.

This weeks podcast I go into detail what has changed regarding the guidance & laws regarding the latest step of lockdown easing. Also is June 21st lockdown easing under threat due to the Indian variant?
Health Secretary Matt Hancock says if the Indian variant is 50% more transmissible than the Kent variant, it will cause "problems" for the lockdown easing roadmap. He says local lockdowns could return, and defends the government against the charge that it was too slow to stop travel from India. Sir Mark Walport, former Chief Scientific Adviser, raises concerns about Monday's easing of restrictions. Adam Finn of the JCVI says the Astra-Zeneca vaccine could now be given to under-40s.
On the weekend podcast we talk about investing in the future, The second Jab, Big Down Days, The Indian Variant, Why sell a good business? The World Health Organization has warned that the Covid-19 pandemic's second year is on track to be "far more deadly" than the first. As the spread of the disease in India shows little sign of slowing there are increasing concerns that the so-called Indian variant could prove to be a key factor. We hear from Dr Julian Tang a Consultant Virologist at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. Hong Kong is also trying to cope with a sudden rise in coronavirus cases, some of them involving the Indian variant. We hear from Dr Keiji Fukuda, the Hong Kong government's Covid 19 advisor. The Bank of England chief economist, Andy Haldane, has suggested there could be inflation in store, as the BBC's Victoria Craig reports. And in the US, inflation is also a concern as we hear from economist Chris Low of FHN Financial. Plus, the BBC's Lucy Burton Plus examines the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on church finances around the world. And we hear from Jamiah Hargins, an entrepreneur in Los Angeles who's trying to get urban dwellers to start up micro-farms in small gardens and spaces in city settings. Plus, one of the signs that normality really has returned will be once we start to go out to things like the theatre. There are signs on Broadway that day may be approaching, as Kai Ryssdal from our sister programme Marketplace, explains. And we're joined throughout the programme by Sarah Knight from ABC in Perth, Australia. (Picture of coronavirus via Getty Images).
