For Michael Langston, Vice President of ES&H at Clean Earth, safety boils down to one simple premise: Make sure the employees know the rules. Make sure the rules make sense. Make sure they're applicable. It seems easy enough, but as Michael quickly discovered as a young Industrial Hygienist at a steel factory, updating policies and procedures designed to protect the worker isn't always met with acceptance. Change can be difficult, but Michael suspects some of the resistance to change lies within the safety industry itself—a field he feels sometimes pushes rules and expectations that don't always make sense. In this episode of My Big Safety Challenge, Michael shares the twists and turns of his professional journey, from studying to be a pharmacist in college to leading safety initiatives for an international corporation. Along the way, he's learned to frame safety in a way where each person should treat themselves as the CEO of their own wellbeing. And don't miss the captivating story of how he used a jar of marbles to illustrate the dangers of distracted driving.

This week, host Dr. I. David Daniels will speak with Trenell Boggans, the immediate past president of the American Industrial Hygiene Association‘s Minority Special Interest Group, about an industrial hygienist's view of psychosocial hazards. Industrial hygiene is the science of identifying, evaluating, and controlling workplace hazards that can impact the health and safety of workers and the community. It's also known as occupational hygiene. Industrial hygienists use various methods, including environmental monitoring, workplace analysis, and scientific methods. Industrial hygiene standards include: · Proper handling, transportation, and storage of substances and equipment · Protective clothing · Workplace ergonomics · Ventilation design This episode will spotlight an industrial hygienist's role in ensuring the safety of workers in the workplace and the community at large. This conversation will also focus on psychosocial hazards from the view of a relatively new member of the IH profession.
“How can you do a PhD on a topic soooo subjective… as an Industrial Hygienist have to read so many scientific articles from research and a lot are so inconclusive basically *use at your own risk, *needs more research, etc. can't imagine research about a word like empowerment.” This is a common question I get asked as a social researcher, which opens the door to a broader discussion about the often overlooked philosophical foundations of research and the need to embrace both the subjective and objective aspects of knowledge, and avoid many of the dualisms we see in contemporary Western thinking. Thanks for joining me once again! Wishing you the best! I thought it would be neat to talk on what may interest others in the field of consultant work, working on a cruise ship, how we wonder how things are made, working in manufacturing plants like the Ford F150 plant, Harley Davidson, Mass Production food plants, etc. These were just some of my experiences working as an "Industrial Hygiene Consultant" aka an EHS(Environmental, Health, and Safety) specialist. I did this for nearly three years after getting one of my Bachelor's Degrees in Public Health Industrial Hygiene and pursued it as my career post graduation. This is why we moved from Utah to Houston. This is what allowed me to travel several times a month for work. This is what brought me the opportunity to head for Japan for the first time and work on the Diamond Princess and three other ships. I feel so thankful and wanted to share some experiences.I also wanted to speak on safety tips and information I wish people knew. How crucial it is to know your rights! That your work space should be safe for your health whether it be an office, working outside, or with machinery. Please check out OSHA's websites if you have any concerns or want to just know what regulations are out there.I'm here for you if you have any questions or concerns!Would love to have a guest speaking on this more in the future too! Let me know what you "wonder" about!xoxo Victoriawondersofwomenpodcast@gmail.com@thewondersofwomen on Instagram

Today, I am delighted to be joined by Ken Martinez, who is a certified Industrial Hygienist and Environmental Engineer with a long and illustrious career in biosecurity and research. His career has spanned over 33 year with the CDC, responding to crises such as the first SARS1 outbreak in Toronto, responding to the World Trade Center collapse, working on anthrax, multi-drug resistant TB and more. He shares what we have learned from responding to previous biological threats and pandemics, and how we can apply them now. We talk today about the “4 Ds” of keeping air safe- Density, Distance, Duration, and Dilution. In addition to vaccination, we talk about what is known and what is unproven in terms of indoor air cleaning technology. In particular, we talk about technology such as chemical foggers, ionizers, and hydroxyl radical generators, which have been heavily marketed to schools and homes across the country. I have received pitches for these myself, and understanding what is actually proven vs unproven technology is helpful. To Do- 1- Remember the “Four Ds”- Density, Duration, Distance, and Dilution in your upcoming holiday gatherings. Encourage anyone who is not vaccinated who is eligible to be vaccinated. Listen to earlier podcast episodes this season on how to have those conversations. 2- Commit to Care to reduce COVID spread by checking out the post on the website for information on how to optimize both HVAC and portable air filters for indoor safety. 3- Do you already have a portable air cleaner? If so, check to see whether it is a filter that is removing particles from the air, like a certified HEPA filter, vs something that is adding something to the air, such as ionizing technology or hydroxyl radical generation. Until we know more, focus on removing particles from the air and ventilating well rather than introducing new things into your air. Learn more about selecting and sizing an air filter for your space- this post is geared for wildfire concerns, but has information about air filters in references. 4- Find out what air “cleaners” are being used in your school, church and home. If they are using ionizing technology and hydroxyl radical generators, ask whether the device has been studied in occupied spaces. You can also reach out to me, and I can try to put you in touch with scientists who are interested in studying the effectiveness of this technology in the real world. 5- Learn more about school and home air safety with COVID19 by listening to the episode “The Air Kids Share” with Dr. Olsiewski of Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. 6- Consider a donation to IBEC to help them in their work to make the air in our schools, churches and workplaces safer. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Visit blog post for more information, or go to airhealthourhealth.org. Melissa first met Kate Rhodes, a fellow backpacker and NYS Licensed Outdoor Guide, where she's met so many other amazing women – out on trail! They both happened to be camping out at the same lean-to on the same night along the Northville Placid Trail in the Adirondacks when Melissa first heard word of but a few of Kate's many amazing outdoor endeavors — but she's so humble, it was her hiking companions who were the ones to hype her up!At the time, Kate was training for an upcoming attempt at snagging the unsupported record for the Fastest Known Time for traversing all 46 of the Adirondack peaks over 4,000 feet in one fell swoop — and in this episode you'll get to hear all about the planning logistics and training for that, as well as her subsequent FKT pursuits. But that's just the tip of her awesomeness iceberg! Kate's an Adirondack 46'er, President of Adirondack Mountain Rescue, a non-profit Wilderness Search and Rescue team, an Outdoor Guide working with multiple Adirondack-based guiding services, and co-owner of the gluten, dairy, soy & refined sugar-free TogaNola Snack Company -- all while holding down a 9 to 5 as an Industrial Hygienist, and is absolutely crushing it at her latest pursuit - ultra-running. You'll get to hear all about Kate's journey from growing up as an inside kid to becoming an outdoor badass, how inspiring other women and young girls helps to keep her going, and about the important role the outdoors play in her own mental health and well-being. A brief note to listeners – around an hour and 9 minutes into this episode, there is talk about the suicide of a close family member of Kate's. That event is one of the driving forces behind her current endeavors and the reason she helps raise money for organizations such as 46 Climbs and The American Foundation of Suicide Prevention.
