The race towards a just energy transition in South Africa's hardest-hit region takes another big step forward with the Coega Green Ammonia project receiving government support to fast-track development. At last week's South Africa Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town, Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Patricia de Lille announced that the Hive Hydrogen project in Coega, Nelson Mandela Bay, had been registered as a special integrated project (SIP). This means that the Hive Hydrogen project, which will produce 950 000 t of green ammonia a year, will be prioritised for implementation and can follow an expedited path to delivery with set and shorter time frames for regulatory processes. Hive Hydrogen South Africa executive chairperson Thulani Gcabashe described securing SIP status as a huge achievement and expressed pleasure at entering into this next exciting phase of the project, which involves a close interaction with several key State-owned enterprises with the strongest support possible from the South African government. Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane highlighted the project as a crucial milestone achieved after years of project preparation. “The Eastern Cape gave their strong backing for the project at the Eastern Cape Investment Conference in Buffalo City recently and we will continue through the Coega Development Corporation and the Infrastructure Investment PMO to support Hive Energy and Linde fully as they develop this multibillion-rand project that spans across the Northern and the Western Cape and is anchored in the Eastern Cape. It will trigger and generate industry development with upstream and downstream opportunities that will create more than 20 000 jobs in our province,” the premier added. Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Retief Odendaal remarked that “with the lowest GDP per capita and one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, we are very happy to hear this news and what it means for our local economy. We have been working closely with Hive for some time now to help ensure this project is a success." Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber CEO Denise van Huysteen said the project was Nelson Mandela Bay's most significant to date. “We have been engaging with Hive for some time and their commitment to aligning their just energy transition objectives with those of the Business Chamber's strategic priorities are most welcome. “In particular, we see the company as being a critical contributor towards advancing our Climate Change strategy, which among other areas promotes the green economy and the initiation of renewable energy solutions. With Hive as an anchor, we have no doubt that this will expand and unlock our Metro's potential to become a key renewable energy hub on the continent as an exporter to major markets like the Far East, Europe and the United States. We are ideally placed as a Metro with good wind and solar sources, a spacious Industrial Development Zone and a world class deep-water port. “We are looking forward to collaborating with Hive to revive our local economy and create thousands of direct and indirect jobs,” said Van Huysteen. Hive Hydrogen GM Colin Loubser announced at the panel discussion at the Green Hydrogen Summit on stimulation of localised manufacturing, which included the Minster of Trade, Industry and Competition Ebrahim Patel and senior executives from the Industrial Development Corporation, Anglo American, Arcelor Mittal and Siemens, that Hive had also secured the commitment from one of the world's largest battery and solar panel manufacturers to establish plants in Coega to support the Hive project and other renewable energy-led businesses in the country. Hive also told the audience at the summit that they were in discussions to bring electrolyser manufacturers into Nelson Mandela Bay as the Eastern Cape region has demonstrated through its excellent track record in the automotive industry that it has all the skills and resources to host large-scale manufacturing plants fo...

'The real State capture is at local government level' - Ramaphosa tells mayors

Polity.org.za Audio Articles

While State capture is rated by many as the biggest scandal in post-apartheid South Africa, for President Cyril Ramaphosa the real capture is at local government level. Ramaphosa said this on Thursday when he addressed the more than 100 mayors who converged at East London's International Convention Centre for a two-day Council of Mayors conference, which was organised by the SA Local Government Association (Salga). During his keynote address, Ramaphosa brought corruption, maladministration and mismanagement of funds into sharp focus, urging mayors to stand up against criminals who are capturing municipalities. He also urged mayors to learn from the findings of the Auditor-General. "The Auditor-General is not writing novel fictions. They follow what really happens, therefore you should take them seriously," Ramaphosa said. He said corruption undermined the work at local government level, which was the most important sphere of government. "I have heard about this, where everything is outsourced to serve outside interests, resulting in the municipality being captured," said Ramaphosa. "You have been talking about State capture and, in fact, we are finding that the real capture is happening at local government level, where certain interests just capture the entire municipality and they purportedly then provide every service." Ramaphosa said that, due to this, it was often found that workers, who were originally employed to execute the functions offered by service providers, continued being paid every month for work being done by outsiders. "I have heard stories of councils being captured by criminals - whereby, in the council chambers, you will find criminals sitting in the gallery among the audience watching closely over the council proceedings to hear how the councillors will vote on the distribution of equitable share. These criminals are waiting for their own share," Ramaphosa said. The conference was attended by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Police Minister Bheki Cele. The host, the mayor of Buffalo City, Xola Pakati, and Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane were also in attendance. During the speech, Ramaphosa urged mayors to develop their towns and cities by attracting investment from the private sector in order to create jobs. He advised mayors to cut ties with unscrupulous service providers, whose intentions were just to make a quick buck by milking municipal coffers. The Salga Council of Mayors has, since its formation in 2016, gathered mayors from across the country to deliberate and collaborate on matters concerning service provision, local governance and strengthening municipalities. The event will also see mayors, who received mayoral chains for the first time after the 1 November local government elections, being inaugurated at the two-day event. Ramaphosa's theme for the keynote address was "The role of mayors to enhance good governance and sustainability". He said the capture of municipalities had to come to an end because it destroyed effective governance. According to Salga, the Council of Mayors event acts as a consultative forum for the development of local government positions on policies and on legislation impacting local government. It said the structure also identifies policy and legislative matters which Salga needs to include in its advocacy, lobbying and strategic engagements. Salga said in a statement, "This collective of mayors identifies challenges faced by the executive in municipalities and proposes solutions and approaches to address prevailing challenges facing local government." Over the two days, members of the national executive of Salga will be expected to join the conference for discussions on transitional progress following the 2021 elections. The discussions will focus on: Local government finances; Financial management and municipal financial recovery; Opportunities for developing human settlements; Safe and secure communities; The ru...

ANC demands answers on Eskom's planned Stage 4 load-shedding, suggests political motive

The African National Congress (ANC) - as the national governing party which has overseen power utility Eskom for the past 27 years - noted with "grave concern" Eskom's announcement of Stage 4 load-shedding and says it may be deliberately done for "political ends". The party also admitted that it poured cold water on its manifesto promise of providing reliable energy. Eskom announced on Wednesday that it was pushing load-shedding to Stage 4 at noon on Wednesday, and this would continue until 05:00 on Friday. Stage 2 load-shedding would then be in effect until 05:00 on Saturday, as announced by the utility earlier in the week. "The latest bout of load-shedding is despite a commitment by the CEO of the utility to contain load-shedding and ease disruptions to power supply in mid-October," ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe said in a statement on Wednesday. "The ANC is further concerned that the announcement made by Eskom coincides with the first day of final examinations for thousands of matriculants across the country who must have the opportunity to study and write their exams uninterrupted by power outages. "Given the inconsistency in information and assurances received from the utility, the ANC is by all intents and purposes quite concerned that these acts may be the deliberate actions of some within Eskom for political ends." He said the ANC demanded "unequivocal answers" on the current state of power supply. "The mixed messages and lack of public transparency and accountability witnessed are a source of grave concern and suspicion," Mabe said. "It is also a direct affront to the ANC's commitment in our manifesto to ensure safe and reliable electricity supply to our communities." He said the ANC called for "leadership and transparency" in explaining to South Africans the state of power supply and to make an honest assessment on whether the right skills and leadership were at the utility's disposal under the current circumstances. "The anxiety and disruption meted upon our people by the inconsistency in messaging and failure to take the nation into confidence in the state of the grid must be condemned." Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema, on the campaign trail in Buffalo City on Tuesday, claimed the reintroduction of load-shedding was all part of a well-orchestrated, elaborate scheme by the ANC to steal votes from smaller parties. "Once the electricity switches off, we go stand next to the boxes, and no one is going to touch any box. There is no vote that is going to be stolen here," Malema said. The ANC responded, calling the allegations a "blue lie of the highest order". Meanwhile, in Cape Town, the Democratic Alliance's (DA's) mayoral candidate Geordin Hill-Lewis wrote an open letter to the city's residents, expressing his concern about load-shedding, particularly as the matric exams had started. "We, the people of Cape Town, should never accept the unacceptable. I can assure you that ongoing electricity blackouts and the prospect of a complete collapse of our electricity grid will never be acceptable as long as the DA governs in Cape Town." Hill-Lewis had recently announced a plan to reduce Cape Town's reliance on Eskom. "We will procure our own electricity from independent producers. We will empower residents to generate and trade their own electricity via the City's grid. And we will build on the success of Steenbras to expand our own generating capacity," he said in the letter on Wednesday.

Taking up the chance to be a professional in 2012 as she turned 20, she had to make a drastic decision to give herself the best chance of success.   Jeanni explains: "I left South Africa with pretty much nothing - but, with the support of my family, I was able to make a life for myself as a professional athlete in the United States."   The first couple of years were tough, but her breakthrough moment came late in 2015 when she won IRONMAN 70.3 Austin thanks to a storming run. In 2017 there were four 70.3 titles at Liuzhou, Monterrey, Boulder and Los Cabos, as well as a first top-10 in the 70.3 World Championship in Chattanooga. Just for good measure, she grabbed a Challenge Iceland title too.   But it was the triumph in her adopted home of Boulder which struck a chord and showed how far she'd come. It has only been in recent years that researchers have begun to include women in their studies, and, perhaps not surprisingly, some differences are beginning to emerge. A recent study looking at the differences between male and female marathoners found that women's hearts actually respond differently than men's after training for a marathon.   The study The paper, entitled “Sex differences in cardiovascular adaptations in recreational marathon runners,” aimed to examine various changes in heart function in male and female marathoners and recreational athletes. The researchers included 52 marathoners (28 females and 24 males) who had completed five to seven marathons over three years and 49 recreationally active adults (25 females and 24 males) as controls.   The researchers studied the hearts of each participant, focusing on three main measurements:   Left ventricle function: the left ventricle pumps oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body. Aortic stiffness: occurs when the elastic fibers within the arterial wall (elastin) begin to fray due to mechanical stress. Ventricular-vascular coupling: the ratio of arterial to left ventricle elastance, a key determinant of cardiac performance. The results After studying the hearts of all the participants, the researchers found that women who have completed multiple marathons do not have reduced left ventricle function or aortic stiffness compared to male marathoners or female recreationally active athletes (both of which are good things). Interestingly, they appear to have better ventricular-vascular coupling compared to the other test groups, which means their hearts are more mechanically efficient after undergoing a marathon training cycle. In other words, women's hearts may respond better to marathon training than men's.   The reason for this is unclear, but the researchers believe it could have something to do with the estrogen levels in female athletes. Studies show that estrogen positively modulates cardiac hypertrophy (the heart's tendency to get bigger with training), lowers blood pressure and decreases arterial stiffness, all of which make for a healthier, stronger heart.   The researchers conclude the studying by acknowledging that future studies are needed to better understand the influence of sex hormones (in particular, estrogen) on cardiovascular adaptations in marathon runners. This will create a greater understanding of how women adapt to marathon training and may lead to better training protocols for female distance runners in the future.   Brownlees Step Aside, Alex Yee is The New Heir to The British Tri Throne – Triathlete   What's New in the 303:   Still a Couple of Triathlons in Colorado in October The Last Call Triathlon at Boyd Lake near Loveland was the last triathlon along the front range but there are still a couple of opportunities to race in Montrose and Alamosa. Some “Pro Tips” on Embrocation Products Posted on September 29, 2021 By Val Sanford   With cooler weather heading our way (finally) and cyclocross season upon us, now might be the time to try embrocation to help warm those muscles up. Here are some “pro tips” from a top maker–Bluerub.   PERFORM BETTER IN COLD WEATHER   If you cycle in cold weather, use an embrocation product like bluerub's MUSCLE to increase your comfort while riding. You'll add warmth and increased circulation to your legs, so you can ride farther and go longer.    HOW EMBROCATION WORKS   Embrocation products blend warming ingredients like capsicum, mint essential oils, clove oil, black pepper essential oil, camphor, and menthol to signal the body to “warm-up” the area where it was applied. When used before cold-weather exercise, it acts as a signal to tell the body to increase circulation to the legs. You'll feel the cold less, and your legs will thank you.   7 PRO-TIPS FOR USING EMBROCATION   EMBRO AFTER YOU KIT UP You've got the idea now that embrocation is all about warming! So you'll want to put on your kit first. That will keep all those warming oils away from the parts of your body you definitely don't want to ‘warm-up.” Think capsicum blended into your chamois. Yikes!   APPLY ABOUT 30 MINUTES BEFORE YOU RIDE Typically, you'll feel the effects of embrocation about 30 minutes after you apply it. But everyone's body is different, so you'll want to do some experimentation before a big race. This means you'll need to be thinking about your pre-race/pre-ride routine and make sure you've given yourself plenty of time.   Remember, though, that embrocation products won't replace your warm-up. You'll still need to stretch, warm-up, and do your pre-ride physical routine.   Pro-tip: Apply CHAMOIS first, for the obvious reasons.   REALLY WORK IT IN I've heard some say they channel their inner massage therapist to really work the embrocation into the muscles and to thoroughly cover the skin. Roll down your socks, roll up the legs of your bibs, and really spend a few minutes working it in. While legs are the most common spot, you can apply to your lower back, shoulders, neck, and ankles.   When you use something that is also a recovery product, like MUSCLE, you'll get a double benefit from the massage in helping relieve any leftover pre-ride stiffness or soreness in your muscles. You can even reapply after your shower to give sore spots some relief.   Pro-tip: not all embrocation products are non-staining. So do a spot test before going all-in on your favorite kit.   AVOID YOUR EYES, MOUTH, AND OTHER SENSITIVE PARTS You know how much you hate it when you've been cutting peppers and then touch your eye or your lip? Well, that's what it'll feel like if you touch your eyes after applying embro. Wash your hands with warm soap and water, or use a wipe (although this may not get all of it off your hands). You can also use single-use gloves to apply and then toss. It's not an eco-friendly solution, but it can save you on a race when you don't have access to warm, soapy water.   Pro-tip: Fill your bottles, pack your phone, snacks, and other essentials before applying embrocation, just to be on the safe side.   KEEP YOUR LEGS WARM Embrocation creams don't actually add any extreme cold-weather protection to your legs. So if you're riding in chilly weather – especially if there's a breeze — you'll need to protect your legs from the elements. Try using knee warmers or even thermal tights (with our without embrocation). Be mindful of how cold it is and be aware of how it's affecting you.   Pro-tip: Use an embrocation even when the weather isn't cold. It is a great transition solution between cool weather when tights are too much, yet you want a little extra warmth before getting out for a ride.   SHAVE YOUR LEGS Embrocation products come in a variety of forms: oils, balms, salves, creams. bluerub's MUSCLE's is a lightweight cream that goes on smoothly. If your legs are hairy, it can get caught in the hair and not be thoroughly or evenly applied. The embrocation will wash off more fully and easily on smooth skin. Plus, you know you look great with shaved legs! (Try SHAVE for smooth, soft skin.)   Pro-tip: Don't apply on just-shaved legs. Give your pores a little breathing room before using warming oils like those in an embrocation product.   WASH BEFORE YOU SHOWER I love settling into a hot, steamy bath after being outside in the cold, wet weather. But hot water can reactivate the essential oils and give you the surprise of your life! Okay, not the surprise of your life, but you could definitely feel like jumping out of the water!   Use warm, soapy water to remove the embrocation before getting into a hot shower or bath. No-rise wipes can help but may not get all the oils off, so test it to be sure.   Pro-tip: Don't use the same washcloth to wash your face. Some people like using a loofah to help remove the embrocation. Just like your washcloth, keep it 'embrocation only' to avoid any accidental application to your face or nether parts.   So those are our pro-tips for using embrocation cream during cold weather rides.    Video Of The Week: Ironman Chattanooga 2021 Highlights   Closing: Thanks again for listening in this week.  Please be sure to follow us @303endurance and of course go to iTunes and give us a rating and a comment.  We'd really appreciate it! Dodge City was founded on June 17, 1872 as makeshift bar setup five miles west of Fort Dodge. The Founding of Dodge City tells the story of when George Brown meets George Hoover who has set up a makeshift whiskey bar in the middle of the plains. Hoover explains to Brown how he had an obligation to feel the needs of railroad workers and buffalo hunters by opening up a bar. Opening a bar was a simple process, he only needed two things: a place to sell it and the barrels to supply it. The story narrated by Brad Smalley and written/produced by Mike King is a part of a historical series describes how Hoover settled on the location of his makeshift bar, "The western border of the reservation was five miles from the Fort itself. So I decided to mark off five miles from the Fort. To take a true measurement of the distance traveled, I tied a rag to a wheel on my wagon.” At the end of the conversation Hoover convinces Brown to go into the whiskey business by opening a bar next to his tent. Soon after Brown sets up the second saloon in Dodge City a make shift town is created of crude framed buildings, half wood, and half dugout. Brown provides a first hand look at then Buffalo City soon to become Dodge City during the months of July and August of 1872. One week after Brown sets up his saloon gamblers and women start to arrive in big bowed, mule-driven wagons. What comes next from those wagons begins to play out as bad whiskey business - as one of the first gunfights erupts in the street between gambler Moorehouse and ruffian by the name of Langford. BizNews — President Cyril Ramaphosa said the country will be moved down to level 3 of the phased lifting of the lockdown on the 1st of June. The President said that the government is concerned about the number of Covid-19 cases in Cape Town and the Western Cape and if the spread of the virus is not contained in hotspots, which includes several places in the Western Cape, Tshwane, Johannesburg, Ekhuruleni, Ethekwini, Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City; the areas could be pushed back to earlier levels of the lockdown. Hotspots will be reviewed every two weeks. One third of the 22,538 confirmed cases in South Africa have been recorded in the past week and the death toll from Covid-19 stands at 429 people. 842 patients are in hospital with 128 in ICU. He said South Africa must get used to living with the virus for some time to come as the country would not be able to stop it. Ramaphosa also announced that: - Wholesale and retail trade would be fully re-opened; - Alcohol would be sold at certain times for home-consumption; - Tobacco products will still not be sold; - The opening of churches will be discussed in further consultations; - Restaurant, bars, gyms will remain closed; - People can now exercise at any time of the day; - Public servants would be expected to go back to work; - 20,000 hospital beds are being repurposed for Covid-19 cases; - 27 field hospitals are being built; and - The government is supporting and funding research several projects including a plan to locally manufacture coronavirus vaccines as soon as candidates are available. - Linda van Tilburg

Part five takes you into the streets of Dodge City, then named Buffalo City - at the first look of crude framed buildings, half wood, and half dugout. The streets were populated with freighters, hunters, and soldiers. Brown describes how he becomes the second saloon owner by constructing a fourteen-foot wood structure. It only took a week for entertainment to reach the small makeshift town. The gamblers and women started to arrive in big bowed, mule-driven wagons. What comes next from those wagons begins to play out as bad whiskey business - as one of the first gunfights erupts in the street between gambler Moorehouse and ruffian by the name of Langford. The story narrated by Brad Smalley and written/produced by Mike King is a part of a historical series about the early buffalo hunters in Kansas. You can purchase the book by clicking on the link Return of the Great Hunters: Tales of the Frontier. Learn more about this episode at Wild West Podcast Facebook Page.

Welcome back to the latest edition of the Ask Coach Parry podcast. Julie Van Lyleveld asks a bit of a combination question between triathlon and running. Julie says she is training for the half Ironman, the Ironman 70.3 in Buffalo City in January. She wants to know how do you go about training for that race and do the necessary running training for the Comrades Marathon. When she looks at the training needed for the Comrades Marathon, she has no idea where she can fit in her cycling and swimming. She has completed one Comrades Marathon before, that was this year and has run a 21 km very comfortably in about 1.55, so she is a decent runner. She is strong on the bike but she needs to spend time in the pool to get strong in the water. Your help will be greatly appreciated in getting the balance right.
