James Blackwell, Director of the Agency Blueprint and managing director of Ronald James Group, was interviewed by Benjamin on the Elite Recruiter podcast. Blackwell discussed his journey in the recruitment industry, starting as a car salesman before falling into recruitment and eventually starting his own agency in 2015. He spoke about the common issue of recruiters setting up their own agency and becoming highly paid employees for their own business instead of growing and scaling. To hit the seven-figure mark in a recruitment business, Blackwell advised building a client attraction system through a Dream 100 campaign for repeat business and winning clients exclusively retained by creating a unique methodology and signature sales pitch deck. However, to scale beyond $100-250k, it is important to learn how to be a business owner and not just a recruiter. Blackwell emphasized that a highly employed solopreneur is not a business owner. During the conversation, Blackwell discussed strategies for small and solo recruitment agencies to thrive in a recession by being leaner and more agile than larger agencies. In addition to sending automated email or LinkedIn campaigns, agencies should consider going the extra mile to differentiate themselves, such as building a marketing agency to help boost a client's brand and attract better talent or offering a free workshop to potential clients. Regarding starting one's own recruitment agency, Blackwell advised on the importance of having a mentor and a plan to map out the niche market and win clients, and not to worry about the website initially. He also suggested not taking investors and focusing on building a proper business by getting some money coming in and then building client acquisition system and operations. Blackwell emphasized the importance of investing in oneself and not taking 50-50 partnerships or giving away billings every month to companies that invest in recruitment agency startups. Blackwell recommended the book "How to Get Rich" by Felix Dennis for its practical advice on building a successful business with systems and "Built to Sell" by John Wobbleau Talk for its principles on building a business that is not reliant on the owner. He also shared his favorite quote, "If you think you can, then you can, and if you think you can't, you can't." Throughout the conversation, Blackwell emphasized the importance of building relationships and honing persuasion skills as a recruiter. He recommended the book "Search and Placement" by Steve Finkel as a valuable resource for new recruiters. For experienced recruiters, he suggested considering going out on their own to build their own business empire or partnering with their current agency to add value and progress within the company. He also advised against seeking investors for a recruitment agency startup, as this often results in giving away a large portion of billings without receiving adequate support or systems to build the business. He emphasized the importance of investing in oneself and finding a mentor for guidance and support. A very honest, considered & motivating conversation with today's guest, James Blackwell. James Blackwell is an expert recruitment mentor, owning both a 7-figure recruitment agency specialising in the tech space, and his online education company, The Agency Blueprint. Born and raised in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, James started his recruitment career in 2010 working for Frank International . Over the course of the next 12 years, he moved from a trainee to a high performing recruiter, smashing every target along the way. In 2015, James left the comfort and security of his recruitment role to start up the Ronald James Group; with nothing more than a £10,000 credit card limit and the drive to make his agency a success. Over the last 7 years, Ronald James has scaled to over £1.5m a year with a team of 10 employees, and is now a well-oiled machine that functions without him in the day-to-day activities. Having invested well over £300,000 in his education and personal development, James now runs both of his 7 figure businesses remotely from Dubai, and has set his sights on new heights over the coming years. We talk through the journey, the early days, the motivations and ambitions – who do you need around you? What do you need to do? If you were gathering evidence that the Blues could be the real deal in 2021, their 31-16 season-opening victory over the Hurricanes would make a strong start to the prosecution's case.A conviction may still be ways away, but by toppling the hosts in Wellington, and doing so with a dominant set-piece performance, savvy discipline and strong defence, there are promising signs for the Blues' second Super Rugby Aotearoa campaign.A counter-argument could be formed that their sloppy opposition provided a few helpful gifts that won't be as forthcoming on future travels. The Hurricanes, as has seemingly been their style since Covid-19 brought Super Rugby Aotearoa into existence, had problems with their discipline, giving away two deserved yellow cards, and their inexperienced halves combination struggled to give space to the likes of Ngani Laumape and promising returnee Julian Savea.Yet, away wins in this competition are extremely valuable, and by joining the Crusaders in nabbing one in the opening week, the Blues have made an early indication that they deserve the status of the second-best team in the competition. For years, the Blues were heavily criticised for not being able to do the little things that conventional rugby wisdom correlates with winning. But by closing out a tight game, winning the clichéd "battle up front", and managing to grind through a significant period of ugly play, the signs are good that Leon MacDonald's men have the substance to build on last season's breakout. That ugly play consisted of a large chunk of the first half, after an electric start which saw a trio of confused Hurricanes forwards attempt to string passes together near their own goaline, Dalton Papalii pouncing on the mistake and scoring – before the Blues decided to try their own Keystone Cops routine, managing to dive over, near and underneath Asafo Aumua as he barged through five defenders and caterpillared his way to the line.Six minutes in, and the game was alive, but the next 34 minutes were bogged down with endless penalties, scrums, and everyone's favourite – scrum penalties. The Hurricanes were the biggest culprits, with the Blues' All Blacks-laden pack dominating the scrum, and after five penalties in six minutes, James Blackwell was sent to the bin after straying offside.Julian Savea's return – showing glimpses of his old self when given space, and even clearer flashbacks when forced to barge over defenders in no space – briefly saw him shifted to the side of the scrum, but against the odds, the Hurricanes held on, and two booming Jordie Barrett penalties gave them an 11-7 halftime lead.It was against the run of play, but more fitting was the start to the second half, where smooth interplay led to a break from Akira Ioane, who went where few have gone before by fending off Ardie Savea. A penalty advantage followed, and a crosskick from Otere Black bounced kindly for Caleb Clarke who dotted down. The whistle continued to favour the Blues five minutes later, as Du'Plessis Kirifi – on for the poor Vaea Fifita - was carded for what busy but communicative referee Paul Williams deemed a "cynical" breakdown infringement on his own line.By then, the well-performed propping duo of James Lay and Nepo Laulala had been replaced by Karl Tu'inukuafe and Ofa Tuungafasi, but their supremacy was just as obvious, as the resulting scrum led to a three-on-one overlap which Stephen Perofeta – impressive on return from injury – finished off.Down by 10, Aumua's second try – firing out of a stalled lineout drive like a bullet – gave the Hurricanes a chance, but their discipline continued to let them down, with an Otere Black penalty making the buffer a safe eight, before Rieko Ioane pounced on a knock-on from a crosskick and raced 65 metres to seal a victory that should be one of many for the Blues in 2021.Blues 31 (Dalton Papalii, Caleb Clarke, Stephen Perofeta, Rieko Ioane tries; Otere Black 4 cons, pen)Hurricanes 16 (Asafo Aumua 2 tries...

The 2020 rugby calendar has been chaotic, but lucky for us Super Rugby in New Zealand is back in business. We had Mickey Bateman in studio to talk everything kiwi rugby. Mickey played his high school rugby at King’s College in south Auckland (a short drive from epic rival St. Kentigern College (St. Kent’s) He was lucky to share the field with some NZ rugby legends who are now thriving at the top level. Shoutout to Mickey’s Meals who had been supplying the Colorado Raptors with meals each day. Due to the unfortunate pandemic and the cancelled MLR season, Mickey’s Meals has pivoted to serving meals to front line workers in the city of Glendale. I've long followed the growth of Buzzsumo and have personally known James for a couple of years and am thrilled to have him on the podcast. James is the co-founder of Buzzsumo, and for those that are not familiar with Buzzsumo and work in digital marketing, that's probably the first order of the day - go and check out a free-trial.James has built Buzzsumo from launching the concept in 2013, to serving over 3,000 paying customers and then selling the business to Brandwatch, all in the space of 5 years. How have they achieved that? Content MarketingIt's not been about churning out content, but having a true understanding of what content works and why - going deep when others choose to go wide. It's a strategy they retain to this day. This is a must-listen for those with an interest in content marketing and scaling organic marketing channels.

Hurricanes lock James Blackwell talks with D'Arcy and Goran about his side's recent victory over the Rebels in Super Rugby. After racing out to a 26-0 half-time lead, the 'Canes held on for a 29-19 win in Wellington.LISTEN TO JAMES BLACKWELL TALK WITH D'ARCY AND GORAN ABOVE.
Chiefs coach Colin Cooper has denied claims that his dressing room is split after their horror start to the Super Rugby season. The side has struggled with handling errors and defensive lapses in the early season, finding themselves without a win through the first four rounds. And while their season appears to be on life support, Cooper has denied claims that the losing streak is affecting the dressing room."We work really hard on feedback and we've got good leaders in the group that will keep tapping in with us as coaches and making sure that we're all aligned and in the same waka," he told Radio Sport.Despite his leadership coming into question, Cooper said the team still had the belief they would be playing in the post-season. Flanker Mitchell Brown echoed that and said the players had to take the blame for their poor start."I think he's probably unfairly copping a lot of the blame," Brown said of the criticism Cooper had been receiving."At the end of the day it comes down to the players on the field and how we perform so we've just got to go out there and do our jobs."Looking to upset the high-flying Hurricanes in Hamilton this week, the Chiefs have made several changes to their squad, including moving Damian McKenzie from first five-eighth to fullback.McKenzie's brother, Marty, will don the No 10 jersey in his first appearance of the season, while young gun winger Etene Nanai-Seturo has been demoted to the bench with Ataata Moeakiola joining the starting side. The Chiefs had 13 players unavailable for selection for Friday night's match, including three of their five contracted first five-eighths. As a result, they won't be carrying a back-up first five-eighth on the bench so Damian McKenzie could be in line to slot into the role late in the match. They'll host a strong Hurricanes side who will be looking for an improved performance from the set piece, with experienced props Toby Smith and Ben May given the starting roles in the front row alongside Dane Coles.Chiefs: Damian McKenzie, Sean Wainui, Tumua Manu, Anton Lienert-Brown, Ataata Moeakiola, Marty McKenzie, Brad Weber, Tyler Ardron, Mitchell Karpik, Mitchell Brown, Michael Allardice, Brodie Retallick, Nepo Laulala, Nathan Harris, Aidan Ross.Reserves: Samisoni Taukei'aho, Ryan Coxon, Angus Ta'avao, Taleni Seu, Luke Jacobson, Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi, Alex Nankivell, Etene Nanai-Seturo.Hurricanes: Chase Tiatia, Jordie Barrett, Matt Proctor, Ngani Laumape, Wes Goosen, Beauden Barrett, TJ Perenara, Ardie savea, Du'Plessis Kirifi, Reed Prinsep, Vaea Fifita, James Blackwell, Ben May, Dance Coles, Toby Smith.Reserves: Asafo Aumua, Fraser Armstrong, Alex Fidow, Liam Mitchell, Heiden Bedwell-Curtis, Finlay Christie, Jackson Garden-Bachop, Salesi Rayasi
The Hurricanes have axed both of their starting props from last week's Super Rugby win over the Highlanders.Chris Eves and Jeffrey To'omaga-Allen have been dropped from the 23, with Toby Smith and Ben May to start against the Chiefs on Friday night.Vaea Fifita moves to lock alongside James Blackwell, with Reed Prinsep to start at blindside.Assistant coach Jason Holland says changes are a combination of form and rotation. He says they're looking for ways to be better up front with different combinations. There is just one change to the backline with Wes Goosen starting on the left wing, with Ben Lam being rested.
It will be a familiar side that runs out for the Hurricanes in Wellington against the Highlanders this weekend, with just two changes made.A week removed from their 43-13 battering of the Brumbies, the Hurricanes will welcome back utility Jordie Barrett and prop Jeff To'omaga-Allen to the starting side.Barrett will start on the wing against the Highlanders in place of Vince Aso, who moves back to the bench, with Chase Tiatia holding on to the No 15 jersey after an impressive outing against the Brumbies."We were really pleased with most aspects of our game against the Brumbies and we are looking to build on that by making minimal changes," Hurricanes coach John Plumtree said."There were obviously some tough calls when it came to selecting the side but we were really impressed with the way Chase handled his debut and he has been rewarded for that."The Highlanders are going to be a massive challenge for us, like all New Zealand derbies are, but we are very keen on maintaining our proud record at Westpac Stadium in front of our home fans."On the bench, hooker Asafo Aumua and prop Fraser Armstrong will be in line of playing time for the first time this season.Hurricanes: Chase Tiatia, Jordie Barrett, Matt Proctor, Ngani Laumape, Ben Lam, Beauden Barrett, TJ Perenara, Ardie Savea, Du'Plessis Kirifi, Vaea Fifita, Liam Mitchell, James Blackwell, Jeff To'omaga-Allen, Dane Coles (c), Chris Eves. Reserves: Asafo Aumua, Fraser Armstrong, Ben May, Isaia Walker-Leawere, Reed Prinsep, Richard Judd, Jackson Garden-Bachop, Vince Aso.
Listen to the audio above as Hurricanes hooker and captain Dane Coles speaks to D'Arcy and GoranAfter two unconvincing performances to kick off their season, the Hurricanes have brought reinforcements into the squad.Beauden Barrett will make his first appearance of the season, taking his regular spot in the No.10 jersey alongside halfback TJ Perenara, while younger brother Jordie has been left out of the squad. The Hurricanes have made seven changes in total after being humbled at the hands of the Crusaders last weekend, which sees Ngani Laumape and Chase Tiatia move into the starting squad. It's been a tough start to the year for the Hurricanes, who needed a late charge to beat the Waratahs in their opening fixture before being dealt to in Christchurch last time out. However, with the return of a number of veterans and All Blacks, the side head to Palmerston North to take on the Brumbies with a more experienced and stronger squad.Head coach John Plumtree said the squad was desperate to put in a better performance than the one against the Crusaders in what will be their first home match in 2019."We want to improve a lot of aspects of our play and hopefully we can do that in front of what will be a great crowd in Palmy," Plumtree said."We were really impressed with the performance the Brumbies put out last week so we know the scale of task ahead of us but it's a great challenge for the squad."Hurricanes: Chase Tiatia, Vince Aso, Matt Proctor, Ngani Laumape, Ben Lam, Beauden Barrett, TJ Perenara, Ardie Savea, Du'Plessis Kirifi, Vaea Fifita, Liam Mitchell, James Blackwell, Ben May, Dane Coles (c), Chris Eves. Reserves: Ricky Riccitelli, Xavier Numia, Jeff To'omaga-Allen, Reed Prinsep, Richard Judd, Jackson Garden-Bachop, Wes Goosen.

Some of this video is shot from a "point of view" standpoint so that you can see the examination as if you were doing it and also see clearly how some parts of the examination are performed. Get this right and you'll be set for your whole career.
You're called to see a very sick person on the ward in the middle of the night. You send off some investigations and because they are sick you take some arterial blood for blood gas analysis. You ring the boss who asks you what the blood gases indicate. A bead of sweat breaks out on your forehead as you realise that you have no idea what the numbers on the blood gas print out mean. There goes the reference...... But then you realise that you can interpret blood gases after all, because you have watched these 2 podcasts where James Blackwell gets Tim Watkins to explain what's going on. In part 1 what an ABG is, why it is performed is explained and the common components of the print out are demystified. James Blackwell is an Academic F2 doctor and Tim Watkins is a Consultant Anaesthetist, both at the Royal Derby Hospital, UK
Right - you've got the basics covered in part 1, now we're moving on to how to interpret blood gases and put them in a clinical context. Jamie Blackwell and Tim Watkins take you through how to easily and simply interpret blood gas results whenever you need to using an easy to remember 5 step approach. The 5 step method is then used in a series of actual clinical cases so you can see it in action or try for yourself by pausing the video before the answers. Never fear blood gases again! James Blackwell is an Academic F2 doctor, and Tim Watkins is a Consultant Anaesthetist, both at the Royal Derby Hospital, UK.
