Jasmine Lee came to South Korea in the 1990s. Here she talks of her early experiences with South Korean culture, people, and language. This leads to ideas of multiculturalism, family, identity, and nationalism. Jasmine became a nationalized Korean but still found trouble in terms of acceptance despite speaking the language fluently and having a Korean passport. After a successful television and media career, she made her way into politics and became the first non-ethnic Korean lawmaker in the national assembly. She worked first with the ruling conservative party and then more recently the Justice Party. Despite her efforts, she feels a lot of government efforts and policies were simply adopted because they were trendy rather than geared towards long-term sustainable success. She also sees a lot of stagnation and hesitancy in adopting policies to safeguard the lives of minorities in Korea because it's not politically expedient and the main parties are generally in agreement over them.

I get raw and real with Jasmine Lee-Nicholls, Aussie co-founder of Tech Startup Flashfomo , where we discuss the reality of birth in all its imperfect perfection, and the importance of prenatal education in helping to manage postnatal feelings... We discuss “the Village” and how being wholly focussed on yourself pre-birth does not become a straight swap for being wholly baby-focussed post-birth.... your life doesn't stop, neither should it, it takes dual focus, and the importance of work and “your own life” as oxygen to being an amazing mama is unparalleled. I didn't cut out the ‘bad bits', I didn't caveat constantly that every birth is different, and although I was tempted to; I didn't avoid this topic for fear of ‘scaring' any mamas-to-be. Knowledge is power. Opening this conversation of prenatal education and preparation in an open-minded, nonjudgmental way is absolutely essential to improving postnatal care. So, if you need to hear this today: a doula or hypnobirthing is not a guarantee you'll have a perfect birth, even if it may help - neither is a homebirth. Breastfeeding isn't always straightforward for every scenario, C-Sections do happen (quite a lot, actually, and for what it's worth mine was quite nice

The Korean film Parasite is in the running for Best Picture, Director, and International Feature at the Oscars on Sunday. Critic Mark Eccleston reviews the tragicomedy, directed by Bong Joon Ho. It follows the collision of two Korean families from very different socio-economic backgrounds, and the unstoppable string of mishaps that lie in wait. As part of our Risk season, Front Row is asking artists working in different forms about their greatest career risks. Tonight we speak to Jasmine Lee-Jones, the 20-year-old playwright of Seven Methods of Killing Kylie Jenner which was produced at the Royal Court last year. She considers the risk of discussing divisive topics such as cultural appropriation and colourism - prejudice against people of darker skin tone by those of the same ethnicity - in her play. Eimear McBride, whose experimental debut A Girl is a Half-formed Thing was a literary sensation, she tells Samira Ahmed about her new novel Strange Hotel, about a woman reflecting on her life whilst moving from one hotel room to another. Art critic Richard Cork reports on the restoration of two paintings known as the Petworth Beauties. The portraits of two ladies from Queen Anne’s court were shortened 200 years ago by folding back part of the paintings showing their lower legs to make more space on the wall at Petworth House in Sussex. The paintings are now on show, at full length, as part of British Baroque at Tate Britain. Presenter: Samira Ahmed Producer: Julian May Main image: Parasite Photo credit: Curzon

When we talk about terroir, it’s usually in the context of wine, and the human and environmental conditions that influence the characteristics. But on a recent visit to California, writer and cook Jasmine Lee began to ask questions about this framing, inspired by an heirloom variety of rice with a beautiful name called, Kokuho Rose. Jasmine, who comes from a lineage of rice merchants in Hong Kong, wondered  whether it was possible to think about expressions of the land; ie, terroir, without thinking of about the history and politics of land use in the United States. If this heirloom rice is an expression of the land it was grown on, it is also an expression of the trauma and perseverance with the family who worked that land.  Next, Chef BJ Dennis tells us about his move to St. Thomas in 2004, where he encountered black folks from around the West Indies. Upon learning he was from the lowcountry, they preceded to share stories and insight about the Gullah Geechee, a distinctive culture of the  descendants of West Africa’s rice coast. The experience changed the trajectory of BJ’s career, catalyzing his calling as a chef and scholar of the culture.  Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers

And yeah you're probably all right, but I think it's kind of a dope idea. Over the summer, I reached out to some of my friends and asked them to send me a voice memo. I asked them to tell the story that first pops into their head when they hear the name "Nick Song." The audio you're hearing has been spliced together from the recordings they sent me. There's about a dozen more tapes I didn't end up using from other people who took time out of their day to record them, so thanks so much to them as well. Also thank you to every other person I'm fortunate enough to call a friend. This podcast would be a hundred times longer if I recorded every single one of you out there.
