Osmium #66: de deur achter 2024 dichtgetrokken middels roestige jaarlijstjes

Roestig. Hoe debieler hoe beter! Eye for an Eye drummer Thos Niles joins us to discuss his band's come-up in late Eighties Boston, an odd transitional period for one of the most important scenes in hardcore history. We talk a lot about Eye for an Eye's short yet sweet first go as a band, and paint a pretty vivid picture of what hardcore was like leading up to the Nineties post-hardcore explosion.  Bands we talked about: Eye for an Eye, Slapshot, Wrecking Crew, Kingpin, Quicksand, Supertouch, Have Heart, Fiddlehead, Speed, and many more.  Eye for an Eye just reunited over the weekend to play their first shows in 32 years, including a Boston gig opening for a little band called Have Heart. They also just reissued their crucial EP's, 'Omega Drone' and 'Who', on vinyl via Deathwish. Pick it up here: https://deathwishinc.com/products/eye-for-an-eye-omega-drone-who

Ian talked about feeling a kinship with likeminded artists and friends such as Justice Tripp (Angel Du$t, Trapped Under Ice), Pat Flynn (Fiddlehead, Have Heart), and Patrick Kindlon (Drug Church, Self Defense Family), all of whom share Ian's undying love for hardcore, music in general, finding exciting new bands, pushing the envelope, and bringing influence from outside of hardcore into the genre. Ian also talked about Turnstile's success, and why this moment in hardcore is actually a time in which success is being celebrated and bands who truly deserve it are winning.

Dood & Verderf

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 30, 2022 57:55

De Amerikaanse industrial-metalband Ministry vatte het eind jaren ‘80 mooi samen: the mind is a terrible thing to taste. Heeft paar jaar geleden Be Well opgericht. August Burns Red - Back Burner (Messengers, 2007) ‘Angry music for happy people': zoals deze metalcore band zichzelf omschrijft. Ze zeggen over hun nieuwe plaat: “An ode to those who keep fighting when we don't have the energy to anymore, or never have had it, especially when facing political issues that are increasingly more visible. Een voorbeeld van “The Rotterdam posse is not dead”.

If you have been actively involved in hardcore in the northeast in the past 25-30 years, you have likely been to a show with Jeff Lasich.  I first met Jeff in 1998 when he was living in the Syracuse area. We had a very similar interest in hardcore, straight edge, graffiti, and fanzines. I don't know if I ever realized that Jeff didn't actually live in NY for that long until we did this interview. He was up here so often for so many years I guess I just assumed he always lived up here. Originally from the Pittsburgh area, Jeff also lived in Philadelphia for a time before moving back to Pittsburgh. If you have been to This Is Hardcore or FYA fest (or seen videos like me), you have likely seen Jeff on stage taking photographs. We talk about how Jeff got into photography and how he has evolved as a photographer.  We also discuss fanzines too. When I first met Jeff he was doing a zine called Death Before Dishonor. Most people listening to this are likely more familiar with Start Today, the fanzine Jeff started a few years later. Due to printing costs getting higher and higher, Jeff has made the fanzine available to download in recent years. I'm including a link to the pdf of a recent issue in the show notes.  Jeff also has put out some pretty good hardcore records on his label Bottled Up Records. We talk about Jeff working with bands like Have Heart, One Up, Blistered, Outlast, and The First Step. It's always fun interviewing people that haven't been in 50 bands. You will also notice Jeff and I talked about a show I did here in 2003 when Rochester had a large power outage due to an ice storm. It's interesting because our power went out in my house during this interview due to the wind storm I mentioned in my intro to the episode.  https://www.mediafire.com/file/4eu4387n9z0jce6/Start_Today_%25239_PDF_Final.pdf/file https://www.enterprisehardcorepodcast.com/ https://www.patreon.com/EnterpriseHardcorePodcast --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/enterprise-hardcore-podcast/support

Like every genre, hardcore has evolved over the years. From its snotty beginnings in the 80s to the present day, it’s been welded to just about every genre and subgenre of punk rock you can imagine. In this episode, we dedicate a little bit of time to talking about melodic hardcore, the bastard offshoot of hardcore, punk and emo. Oh and we talk about Witness by Modern Life is War. A “foundational text”, as Mark puts it, for this kind of music. It’s an album which has influenced a crazy number of artists. What’s more, it comes out of a tiny town in rural Iowa, a town that lead singer Jeremy Eaton has described as a place completely devoid of art of any kind. A marked change from their debut, My Love, My Way, it seen the band fuse Bane-esque hardcore with 90s emo to create the kind of melancholic, sincere, heart on sleeve style of music which straddles many genres. Critically lauded at the time, if you’ve been within feet of a hardcore show at any point in the last decade you’ll have heard a band attempting to imitate this kind of music. So much so in fact that if you’re unfamiliar with the genre, you might even find this a bit generic. But make no mistake about it, these guys were the progenitors. Along with the likes of Have Heart, Verse and Sinking Ships, Modern Life is War were band who were ahead of their time. Mark brings this to the table on the basis that they’re an unsung band. They ceased being a full time band almost a decade ago, a result of endless touring that seemed to be bearing little fruit, but their legacy echoes through the ages. Is it worthy of a place in our discography though? Well, that’s up to you to decide.

Patrick FlynnHistory Teacher and Singer of the band Have Heart Fiddlehead Recorded March 14, 2019 Introduction by Luke Kelly and The Action Taken. What we talk about: We are in Pat’s Classroom, he teaches the following courses: AP World History Modern world History Holocaust and Human Behavior. Pat does not consider himself a musician. Why we decided to redo this episode: Have Heart sold out 4 shows around the world in 2 minutes when they first announced their reunion shows this summer. Interested attendees were bummed that they couldn’t get tickets and wondered why the band didn’t understand that they “were the biggest hardcore band ten years ago.” But there is large difference between memory and actual history.10/17/09 was large show for Have Heart, thousands of attendees. One month later, 9/14/09, Have Heart played to 8 attendees. What is the Historical interpretation of Have Heart versus the actual memory of the band? How would you actually analyze that. The memory of Have Heart may have been skewed versus the history of that band. HH spent a lot of time under the radar. Appreciation of History teaches you that change is interesting. History and Memory are step siblings. Playing in Bogota to thousands of people on a festival stage, but then playing the next day to no one.American Nightmare played 242 Main in Vermont in 2004. That was the only time I saw until 2011. My 16 year old self remembers it being a crazy show, but video footage on youtube reminded me that it wasn’t as insane as I remember. Have Heart was DIY. No management. Never asked Bridge 9 for a single dollar. Bridge 9 actually helped Pat Flynn through his graduated career in terms of finance when he was 28. Pat was literally living and sleeping in his car when he was studying at Columbia / during grad school, but it was all worth it as it helped Pat become a teacher. Anyone can be a teacher because there is always a need for teachers. However, not anyone can be a good teacher. To be a good teacher takes risk and trial and error. Discussion versus debate. Canadian Peter Seixas and Samuel Weinberg at Stanford changing the game in history education. There is a process for historical comparison. The skill of determining historical significance and the Haitian revolution of 1791. Historical Thinking and Other Unnatural Acts: Charting the Future of Teaching the Pastby Sam Wineburg. Primary versus Secondary sources. SSA: Single Source Analysis. PLATO IS PETES CAPTAIN Have Heart last show: “LIVE. LOVE. LEARN.” Was Pat a positive guy? “People who don’t study history are doomed to repeat it…and History repeats.” Not really true. Apathetic. The holocaust exhibit at the British Imperial war museum. Make eye contact. Time is not the past, it is also the future and it is also now. We need radical actors to initiate change, but radical action can become counter intuitive. Richard Flynn, the new Flynn on the way, and the ten years that have past. The song Bostons. Have Heart is only playing this summer and playing eight shows only. Pat only wants to do music if there is a pro

Last week we talked about Rule #5: Be the Best at Being You.  That’s when you’re making your product and using your voice and somewhere along the way you lose your path.  You forget who you were when you started and you’ve just become somebody who tries to be like everybody else.  Niche down and stay there.  Have something to say.  Nobody is better at being you than YOU. Today we’re going to tackle Rule number 6 of building a brand: Have Heart. Having heart requires passion.   And as I told you at the end of the last lesson in branding, today you’ll learn how to get rich off your passion. Take your heart medications before listening to this nightmarish story. In the interview portion of the show things get a bit less scary, Ryan Hudon from Have Heart and Step Forward holds down the edge and talks about the influence of skateboard videos, the drama that was the Action Taken, and a brief discussion about farts. In the non edge column Bill talks with Greg Kell of Guns Up! about a variety of topics including joining Guns Up!, second tries at the edge, and how black and white straightedge can be. A very spooky, very fun episode that should not be missed.
