What do you think of when you think self-care? Therapy? Exercising? A spa day? Or maybe something as simple as making yourself a meal or drinking a glass of water? The concept of self-care is incredibly intricate, nuanced, and subjective to each individual but often self-care product marketing is limited to bubble baths and face masks. While these activities can be important forms of self-care for some, they are not indicative of the broad spectrum of what self-care actually can be. Enter today's guest, the wonderful Ashely Sondergaard. Ashley is a mother, yoga teacher, self-care coach and host of the Yoga Magic Podcast. She has a very refreshing view of self-care as a whole and how important it is to individualize your self-care actions. Tying together her passion for this work and her own self-care story, Ashley has developed a unique offering in which she integrates her clients' astrology charts with self-care, producing actionable activities that are very specific to them. I'm so excited for you to hear her perspectives. On today's episode, we covered: - The levels of self-care - Integrating self-care with your astrology chart - Social media and self-care - Setting energetic boundaries - Manifestation and self-care I loved this interview and I absolutely love Ashley. Give her a follow and be sure to send us your feedback once you've had a chance to tune in!

Death. It's an inevitable part of each of our lives, one of two assurances that unite all of humanity…so why do so many of us have such a hard time talking about it? I personally feel very comfortable exploring the many possibilities of what happens to us after we die; reincarnation, the afterlife, the soul's journey, but - I'll be honest - I don't spend a lot of time thinking about the actual dying process here on earth. It is high time to have this important conversation on the podcast and I'm so excited to welcome today's guest, Niagara-based Palliative Care Nurse, Mahoganie Hines who is an expert on the topic. Mahoganie has an enlightening message for all of us; ‘talking about death won't kill us', and in today's episode, she outlines how we can empower ourselves to take action today towards co-creating a ‘good death' experience for ourselves and our loved ones. I'm so grateful for the advocacy work Mahoganie does for those who are dying and truly value the insights she shared in this episode. We chatted about:- What a ‘good death' actually means- How to approach a conversation about death with loved ones- What palliative care advocacy looks like- Different viewpoints on medical assistance in dying About Mahoganie:Mahoganie is an active and ardent member of the community. She volunteers her time to act as the policy and political action executive network officer (PPAN ENO) for both the Niagara chapter and Palliative Care Nursing interest group (PCNIG) of the registered nurses association of Ontario, she sits on the inaugural board as secretary/treasurer for the Canadian Palliative Care Nursing Association (CPCNA), on numerous committees of the Overdose prevention education network of Niagara (OPENN), also volunteering her time at the consumption and treatment site in St. Catharines and referees for Niagara Roller Derby. She currently works as a RN in a casual capacity at Both of the hospices in Niagara and full time as a palliative pain and symptom management consultant (PPSMC) throughout the Niagara Region. Today's guest is the one and only Atarah Valentine! He's a Neural Manifestation Coach with To Be Magnetic*, an Artist, a Songwriter and self-described 'Shadow-Wrangler, Wellness Big Mouth and Belief System Enhancer'. Is he ever! He does all of the above with an unmatched level of authenticity that is so refreshing. I first came across Atarah almost a year ago when he appeared on The Expanded Podcast to talk about his experience with manifestation and rock bottoms. His story spoke to my soul. In the episode, Atarah shared his life journey, his experiences navigating shadow work, and his transformation once he began living in his worth. It was so inspiring and expansive for me to hear and I immediately wrote him down on my 'dream podcast guests' list! I'm so grateful he was able to be a guest as this was such an impactful conversation. On today's episode we chatted about:Atarah's story and how he navigated his rock bottomsHow the manifestation process really works (hint: it's not always easy breezy) Partnership and manifestationHow Atarah's artistry has evolved with this workWhat it really means to 'be in your worth'Mindset shifts and responding to challenges in a healthy wayThe concept of 'Expanders' and how they can help you manifest*To Be Magnetic:To Be Magnetic (TBM) is a manifestation brand founded by Lacy Phillips. I'm honoured to welcome Toronto-based GP, Dr. Steph Godard, MD to the podcast today! I've known Dr. Steph for over 20 years and have been fortunate to witness her hard work and perseverance on the road to realizing her childhood dream of becoming a doctor. We have had many beautiful conversations throughout the years, especially after my diagnosis with MS, that have exemplified the type of doctor she is; open-minded, understanding and empathetic. Our conversation on today's episode only magnified those observations especially around her approaches to creating a collaborative relationship with her patients. One of my biggest goals for 2021 is to expand the guests I invite to be on this podcast beyond those who think exactly as I do. I want to hold space for an open-hearted discussion in which people from different belief systems and backgrounds can find common ground. And we did just that! Me, a 'woo-woo', spiritual, hippie soul who errs on the side of natural healing, and Dr. Steph, a medical professional with a more structured scientific approach to health - found common ground on so many things. I can honestly say I learned so much and Dr. Steph opened my mind to new ways of thinking - and that's what it's all about, baby!We chatted about:How the doctor-patient relationship has evolved over the yearsWays to be more collaborative - from both the patient & doctor's perspectiveDr. Google vs. being an informed advocate for our own healthPractising medicine during a pandemicHow the privatization of Pharma in Canada weakens trustThe vaccine - facts and founded fears (and especially not allowing our opinions it to divide us)BMI as an indicator for health (hint: it's not) DISCLAIMER: This episode is a candid conversation between myself and Dr. Steph Godard. Nothing shared by Dr. Steph in this interview is intended to act as medical recommendations. Please seek information specific to your individual health situation from your health care professional.

About today's episode:One of the greatest privileges of this journey on social media has been connecting with like-minded souls from all different corners of the world. Maddie Ace has been someone who I have learned so much from about healing, mental health, resilience and courage, so I was truly honoured to welcome her as a guest on the podcast. You may recognize Maddie from a few episodes ago when I interviewed her and her partner, Martina, about their experiences as an interracial gay couple living in America in the lead up to the presidential election. Maddie has been a source of calm for me on Instagram; whether she is sharing her vulnerabilities in an authentic way or taking the time to really ask how her followers are doing with her daily mental health check-ins, her page and her general presence are truly a breath of fresh air.On today's episode, we talk about:· Maddie's mental health journey and her first mental illness diagnosis in her teens· How Maddie began to advocate against the stigma of mental illness and for the importance of mental health · Maddie's coming out story and how she describes it as an internal journey · What to expect on Maddie's brand new podcast, titled ‘She Be Red' Tune in now & be sure to rate, review, subscribe and share with a friend if you like what you hear! About Maddie Ace: Maddie Ace is the founder/CEO of two businesses; Nella Marketing, a content marketing firm where she serves clients around the world as an artist/writer, and She Be Red, an advocacy brand and podcast with the purpose of helping others on their journey to holistic mental health. At her core, Maddie is a mental health activist. For the last 12 years, she has walked alongside multiple mental health diagnoses and after a difficult marriage and the onset of severe somatic symptoms, she decided to start making huge changes to her life. This is where she discovered that mental wellbeing isn't just in the mind, it's in the body, soul and spirit as well. Though She Be Red, Maddie shares her journey to show others who are struggling that there is always hope, and she believes it lies within 3 main concepts; healing, feeling and taking leaps of faith. In her new podcast, she encourages her listeners to get curious so they can find a path to a life that truly feels good because, as she says, we are all worthy of that. They decided to speak openly about their experience because: “Between us, we have so many labels… gay, female, white, BIPOC, interracial couple, mental health warrior, immigrant and while we know they don't fully define us, we've been trying to understand what it meant for us to exist within today's political climate, and we wanted others to know that they're not alone in trying to come to terms with what's happening in the world. We figured, maybe we'd have something to say that would help. Regardless, it's helped us to begin to process what we're feeling living in today's America… complete with our concerns, confusions and hope for the future.”
About this Episode:Once in a blue moon you stumble across someone on Instagram who speaks to your soul and it reminds you how connective this app really is! Connection is exactly what today's guest, Sara Koonar, has cultivated with me and many others on social media. I started following her after I saw one of her stories in which she was talking about the importance of diversity, inclusion and representation in influencer marketing and on social media in general, and I haven't looked back since! It wasn't until a few weeks later that I found out she is an incredibly successful entrepreneur and an advocate for small, local businesses. She has literally built an entire brand and company centred around ensuring creators are seen, heard and paid for their content - which is pretty amazing! She's also downright one of the nicest humans and is so easy to talk to! It was wonderful to interview her. Here's what we covered on today's episode:Sara's entrepreneurial journey and the creation of Platform MediaThe evolution of Influencer MarketingTips for people/businesses trying to grow their followings and monetize their social media accounts through partnerships and collaborations. The catalyst that led to brands finally becoming more inclusive in their campaignsThe impacts of COVID restrictions on small businesses and how we can help About Sara Koonar (in her own words):I own Platform Media & Management, a company that represents social media influencers—people who have large social media followings. But I like to call them digital storytellers because they share their lives via beautiful photography and well-written and thoughtful blogs. It's then our job to build their business by connecting them with brands for paid partnerships that are authentic, and best suit the story they are telling, so they can keep sharing their unique lives with their followers.Links: Sara Koonar- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sarakoonar/?hl=en Platform Media- Website: http://www.platformmedia.ca/Platform Media- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/platform_media/?hl=en
About this episode:The American election is only 25 days away and, like many other Canadians, I have formulated a very strong opinion about what the outcome of this election should be. Hint: it's not Trump winning! I often ask myself, though, if my superficial understanding of 2020 American politics – as told by (mostly) the mainstream media – could ever really reveal the true impact that Trump has had on the American people. I feel it's incredibly important to hear the perspectives Americans, particularly POC, and what this election means to them and so I put out a call a few weeks back to any Americans who would feel comfortable coming on the podcast to talk Trump. Enter today's guest, Rommel Casey; a friend and American POC living in Austin Texas. Today, Rommel is courageously sharing his experiences and insights about the past four years and his hopes for the impending election. Rommel's powerful words have had a huge impact on me and have helped me to understand the layered ways in which Trump has divided and polarized America and I think everyone, not only Americans, can benefit from hearing his perspectives as we will all be impacted in one way or another by this important election. We talk about: Growing up American Racism & Police brutality Political polarization Voting for the future About Rommel:Rommel Casey is a 33-year-old American man living in Austin, Texas with his wife, Victoria. Rommel is speaking out on America under the Trump presidency and the impending election.
About this episode:What an honour it was to interview Ashley Scream on her personal healing journey and the steps that led to the creation of Hatua Therapy; a space designed to support others in connecting with their own inner healer. I am in awe of this woman's energy and her important mission to equip people with their own unique healing tools. Ashley selected the name ‘Hatua' for her brand because it means ‘action' in Swahili as she believes that taking individual action towards healing is an essential part of the process. Though Hatua, Ashley presents many offerings including healing circles (especially for BIPOC), guided meditations and daily insights. Ashley often expresses herself through meditative dance. On today's episode we talk about:Ashley's personal healing journey and why she created Hatua TherapyHow Ashely has held space for BIPOC in 2020 by offering Healing Circles Ashley's 8 Powers of Healing and how they have become a part of Ashley's processWhat's next for Ashley and Hatua This episode is the first of a series of podcast episodes that are a part of an initiative to Honour Black and/or Indigenous-owned businesses, artists, entrepreneurs + in Ontario, Canada. About this Episode: Imagine being a 12-year-old girl, having your first ever period and, instead of your parent handing you a bulky pad or trying to explain how to use a tampon, they give you a pair of leakproof underwear that look exactly like your normal underwear and hold as much liquid as EIGHT regular tampons. It would have changed the entire experience. The focus of the conversation would be about your changing body, rather than the confusion of having to 'manage' it! The fact that a product like this will exist for my daughter, Olive, when her time comes, is literally a dream come true for me and I have today's podcast guest to thank for disrupting the intimates market and producing products that are redefining the whole experience, period. About this episode: Have you ever thought to yourself, ‘wow – does that influencer life ever look easy, breezy'? The brand deals, the travel, the freedom, the flexibility, having a platform to share thoughts and ideas… it sounds ideal, right? When you really dive into this topic with actual influencers, there's often more to the story. In fact, there's a dark side to social media that not very many influencers openly discuss. And the underbelly of these social platforms can take an immense toll on the mental health of their users, which is only intensified with the more followers you have. That's why I am so grateful for today's guest, Nicole Zajac. She lays it all out on the line, every day – the good, the bad and the ugly. She promotes body neutrality and acceptance, self-love and mental health, while also sharing her struggles with each of these topics. In her words, she ‘took the wall down', stopped editing her photos and just started showing up as herself, which has helped her to connect in a very real way to her ~65,000 followers on Instagram. On today's episode, we talk about what life is really like as a self-love influencer, how Nicole had to re-navigate her presence on social media after the very public Brendan Leipsic NHL scandal, and her commitment to ensuring her personal values are at the forefront of everything she shares.I'm honoured and grateful to have been able to interview this beautiful soul and can't wait to see all the magic she is bound to create in her career. About Nicole Zajac:Nicole is a Social Media Influencer who promotes self-love, body-neutrality and mental health, based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Key Takeaways:Social media influencing isn't all fun and games; staying true to who you are and your core values is essential Your hurtful comments can have a hugely negative impact on someone else's mental health, think twice before you postBringing down your walls and showing up as your authentic self is far more impactful and connective than creating a social media ‘persona'
Guest: Raffela Mancuso Mental Illness Activist, Diet Culture DisrupterAbout the episode: Get ready to get real about Fatphobia, Diet Culture, Mental Health, Social Media Influencing, and the 'Body Positive' movement with Raffela Mancuso on this episode of the Mind Your Own Life Podcast. Raffela aptly describes herself as a 'Disruptor' and it was through her actions as such that I - and so many others - came across her and her big mission! In May 2020, Raffela decided to call in a handful of Self-Love Influencers on an Instagram Post for their thin privilege. Specifically, she was concerned about these Influencers not sharing the stage or 'passing the mic' to those who are in marginalized bodies, namely fat black women (who were the originators of the "Body Positive" movement). The post went viral. There were scores of negative comments and defensive responses to her post, but even more positive ones cheering her on for her transparency, allyship and courage. Since that point, Raffela's platform has grown and she continues to fight the good fight, educating and advocating for body equality. She recently started an initiative called #PassTheMic which calls on Influencers of any size to share their platform with those who need to be amplified. Listen in for a transparent conversation about a very important and relevant topic that applies to so many of us on social media.About Raffela Mancuso:Raffela Mancuso is a Diet Culture Disruptor, Mental Illness Activist and Body Equality Advocate based in Alberta.Key Takeaways:Fatphobia often happens behind closed doors: Thin influencers with a fraction of the # of followers as fat influencers are reportedly offered more collaborations and opportunities with brands on Instagram The 'Body Positivity' movement was started by and for fat black women. 'Self-love' is for everyone.Regardless of how large or small your platform is, it's important to start to #PassTheMic to others who are in marginalized bodiesLinks:Jameela Jamil's iWeigh Podcast Episode with Monroe Bergdorf: https://omny.fm/shows/i-weigh-with-jameela-jamil/munroe-bergdorf

Sarah Nicole Landry is the real deal. This self-love trailblazer bares so much of her true soul, mind and body on the daily while inspiring and imploring her community to embark on their own individual self-love and self-acceptance journeys. It's no surprise that her loyal followers have grown to 1.4 million on Instagram (and that 700,000 of those followers joined her within a 12 month period). I love so many things about Sarah Nicole, but I think my favorite quality of hers is her commitment to personal growth and evolution. This evolution and openness to change has been apparent in observing the way that she has thoughtfully taken action in her anti-racism work, her inclusivity initiatives and her willingness to admit where she has gone wrong. Sarah Nicole's is a journey of fluidity and transformation – she is completely comfortable being her own biggest hypocrite, which allows space for important growth. On today's episode we talk about anti-racism, the history of the term ‘body positive', thin privilege, plastic surgery and body enhancements, as well as motherhood – and of course, self-love! Sarah Nicole's Bio: Sarah Nicole is a badass mother of three. Five years ago she embarked on a journey to get out of life's ruts and better her life. She lost 100lbs and went through massive life change with a divorce pushing her into new chapter of single motherhood. But like, a badass chapter. Since then, she met this bearded guy and he drank her poison and asked her to marry him. So she locked that down quickly and now they rock the whole chosen family thing! After struggling to find love for her body after losing all that weight, she worked through a lot of inner dialogues to discover the value and meaning behind self-love - and well, she thinks it's worth sharing about. By using social media as her journal, she loves helping others see and understand their worth, love their bodies, feel less alone in the world, and be ok with life's little shakeups. Key Takeaways:Language is important: The term 'body positivity' was derived from a movement created by and for Black women. It can be considered offensive when white women and women with thin privilege use this terminology. Check out this article for more info: https://www.healthline.com/health/beauty-skin-care/body-positivity-origins#1Polarization can be dangerous: It's important that we are careful about 'denouncing' body enhancements (including plastic surgery) as a part of the 'self love' movement. Doing so doesn't allow for individual choice which is what self love is all about. There is a good way to respond to being called out/in: if our content is ever viewed as offensive, it is possible to respond and take appropriate action in a productive way. Guest:Savanna MehradFounder, Chomp SupplyFounder, FemmewaresAbout the Episode:Sometimes the Universe just plunks someone in your lap and you have no choice but to pay attention to who they are and what they are doing. This is what happened for me with Savanna Mehrad. Our paths were absolutely destined to cross. I have been following Savanna's journey for the past 6 months and it has been one wild ride. In that time, she has created a space (Femmewares) for female founders of small businesses to sell their products, she has held vendor calls, selected vendors, held a (highly successful) grand opening – and, most impressively, she showed her resilience by pivoting in the wake of COVID-19, just weeks after she opened her doors. I have been watching in awe! On today's episode of the podcast we discuss a lot; self-care, mental health, entrepreneurship, motherhood, women supporting women – the list goes on! We touched on so many important topics that I actually really struggled to name this episode. All I can say is if you have a little ping in your soul that you want to build or create something, listen to this episode and Savanna's story to feel supported, validated and ignited. About Savanna Mehrad: Meet Savanna Mehrad, the passionate businesswoman behind femme wares. From a young age, Savanna has been a supporter of shopping local and supporting community artisans. Savanna grew up in beautiful Prince Edward County, a hub for artists in Southern Ontario. As a young girl, she would spend hours in the locally owned shops of her hometown, Bloomfield, browsing the wares, chatting for hours with the owners and even selling her own handmade friendship bracelets at the ripe age of 8. Did we mention entrepreneurship runs deep in her blood? Many have said that Savanna's superpower is connecting women and we couldn't agree more! Savanna's career highlights includes over a decade working in post-secondary education, building an online food blog, being published in a cookbook and empowering women to build their own businesses! Fiercely passionate about women in business, Savanna is also the founder of Chomp Supply Inc. A leading silicone teething & craft supply retailer in North America. Savanna helps women worldwide to realize their crafting business dreams, providing them with safe, high-quality products and a supportive and inclusive community via the Chomp Supply social media platforms and the Chomp Maker Community group on Facebook. Savanna holds a college diploma in Business Sales & Marketing from Loyalist College in Belleville, Ontario and a Bachelor of Arts from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. She is the proud mama of two little girls, the proud wife to an engineering nerd and a proud lover of coffee and chocolate. Key Takeaways:On motherhood: wanting to have an identity that is separate from your role as a mother is VERY NORMAL. Follow that pull. On exploring your spirituality: be ‘woo curious' – go out and experiment and see what works for you. You are an individual on this journey and there is no ‘right way'.On mental health: the more we talk openly and candidly about our mental health challenges, the safer this world will be for those who are in the depths of them.

About the Episode: My relationship with my sister, Nicole, is incredibly authentic, deep and honest. While we are very much the same in our pursuit of spirituality and consciousness, our methods are very individual to us, which is why I wanted to have a sister session with her to talk about all the things with her. Nicole is one of the most well-read people I know – she is constantly learning and gives back by sharing her knowledge with those around her. In addition to this, she has also done extensive research on living consciously for our planet and is always sharing insights on small steps we can take to live more sustainably. Episode Guests: Taryn Herrit, Co-Founder & Chief Growth Officer, The Atelier CollectiveAngela Osborne, Co-founder & Chief Experience Officer, The Atelier CollectiveAbout the Episode:When I walked into the new event space at Ravine Vineyard in January 2020 to attend my very first Atelier event, I was floored. I had heard incredible things about the set up of previous events, but I could have never anticipated the thoughtful curation of the space. Ravine had been absolutely transformed into a female entrepreneur's wonderland. Every detail from the vendors, giveaways and especially the speaker line-up was set to encourage each of us (400+ attendees) to step out of our comfort zones. After a day of networking and a major infusion of inspiration I knew I had to learn more about the creators of this incredible event. Witnessing the founders of The Atelier in action at the event I attended and learning more about how they started this incredible collective as research for this podcast episode has really reminded me that anything is possible. Tune in to hear how a conversation between two friends over lunch parlayed into filling a major gap in the business event space for female founders and entrepreneurs. About 'The Atelier', in the words of our guests: Our vision for The Atelier arose from an unofficial and unintentional brainstorming session in early summer 2017.Friends for years, we'd always admired one another's business successes, in the corporate world and as entrepreneurs, as well as our love for adventure and travel. While catching up over lunch that day, we launched onto the topic of personal development and how immensely important it is to the person as a whole – both in business and in life. While we both reflected on some good experiences attending business conferences in the past, we realized there wasn't anything out there that encompassed all of our main touch points – something that was experiential, content heavy and energetic. And something very important was missing: INSPIRATION.That was our a-ha moment. We recognized there was a clear gap in the market, and we had the excitement and experience to create something special exceptional for our fellow entrepreneurs and business leaders. That fortuitous first conversation evolved into inspired action: energized coffee dates, exciting working sessions over lunch and strategy sessions in wine country. Our collective background of event planning experience, marketing skills, and business operations intersected to proudly create The Atelier. Key Takeaways:Take time to be present when you reach a milestone- something you have worked so hard for can pass you by so quickly. Take a moment in the midst of it to celebrate!Hiring your first employee can be one of the scariest- and BEST- steps you can take as an entrepreneur. No response doesn't mean ‘no'! Hold your vision and don't be afraid to follow-up with those who you feel will support your business (or personal) growth – they're probably just busy and will appreciate your tenacity.

About the Episode: When I tell people I'm certifying as Doula, I get so many questions; what is a Doula? What do Doulas actually do? I have midwives, do I still need a Doula? I'm having a hospital birth – Doulas only do homebirths, right? I want the drugs, don't Doulas just try to talk you into a natural birth? These are all valid questions that come up about Doula work as this profession becomes more regulated and mainstream, so I'm very excited and honoured to have a seasoned Birth and Postpartum Doula, Kristin Mundy, on today's episode of the podcast to share her accounts of this work and how beneficial having Doula support can be for families who are transitioning into parenthood or adding a member to their family. In addition to sharing openly about her experiences as a Doula, Kristin is also sharing about her harrowing experiences with Lupus SLE and Transverse Myelitis as well as pregnancy loss. Her story really touched me, as she overcame an extremely difficult prognosis that she may never walk again, over six years ago. Today, Kristin is completely healthy and thriving thanks to self-care, mindset work and low-toxic living. This episode is for you if you're pregnant and considering hiring a Doula, if you're interested in becoming a Doula – and especially if you're dealing with a challenging diagnosis or prognosis and need inspiration to help you to see how much healing potential we have within us! Bio: Kristin Mundy is a Birth and Postnatal Doula, a clean beauty advocate with Beautycounter and a low-tox living educator. Kristin first started her path to health, wellness and advocacy after she was given a life-changing diagnosis in 2013 of Lupus SLE and Transverse Myelitis, which left her paralyzed from the waist down.Kristin now has full use of her legs and has been in remission and medication free for almost 6 years — which she accredits to self-care, mindset, a nontoxic lifestyle, nutrition and inner self-healing. From her own navigation through the healthcare industry, she realized there was a big need for advocacy and education. That need combined with her love for womanhood — becoming a doula became her life's passion.Kristin now runs The Doula Life, a little hub on the internet that aims to empower mothers and arm them with educated information about birth, postpartum, how to be a conscious consumer and protect yourself from environmental toxins. Key Takeaways:Doulas provide physical, emotional and informational support to families during pregnancy, labour, birth and in the postpartum phaseWhen you're practicing heart-centred work, setting boundaries and practicing self-care is very importantOur health struggles become a part of our story, and can help propel us to creating our aligned lives Links:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the.doula.life/?hl=enWebsite: https://www.beautycounter.com/en-ca/kristinoblak
About the Episode: The Cleveland Clinic estimates that 50% of women will experience noticeable hair loss at some in their lives… yet it feels like, with the exception of a few trailblazers, no one is really talking about this issue. In today's episode, we're talking about it!We're talking alopecia, post-partum, and unexplained hair loss.My guest, Lainie Smith, was diagnosed with alopecia in 2016 and bravely and openly shared her story, including a photo of her shaved head, on social media. By doing so, she opened the door for a conversation about female hair loss and was contacted by women around the world, who connected with her story. Her act of courage also inspired me, personally, to come to a place of acceptance with my own hair loss journey which I had been dealing with for 15 years. I'm also sharing my story candidly in today's episode.Listen in for a very open and vulnerable conversation about navigating a situation that can feel devastating for many women. About Lainie Smith: Lainie Smith is a young professional running a product team in the ever-moving SaaS start-up world. As a former university athlete, healthy living has been her life since she can remember. In 2016, Lainie learned first-hand that auto-immune conditions can appear at any time, healthy or not, as she was diagnosed with alopecia areata. Her advice for those also experiencing hair loss? Don't be scared to talk about what you are going through and find YOUR solution- headbands, wigs, scarves, or even shaving your head. Everyone is different but you will be shocked at the amount of people who are keeping a secret just like yours! Key Takeaways:Accepting your hair loss, rather than resisting it, is key to finding self-love in your new reality. Wigs are cool now- did you get the memo? Openly sharing your experience with something like hair loss paves the way for other women to do the same!
About the Episode: Psychics, mediums, intuitives… oh my! On today's episode, we're exploring our connection with ‘the other side'. Loaded topic – get ready for a super interesting conversation. My guest today, Shannon Wright, doesn't identify with the title ‘Psychic', due to the connotations associated with it, but she does feel her abilities most closely resemble those of a ‘Medium'. ‘Mediums' are traditionally known to be a channel (or medium) to the spirits of those who once lived. Because of Shannon's affable nature, I have recently taken to calling her the ‘Happy Medium', a title she hasn't outright rejected but one that makes her giggle with slight embarrassment. She is not someone who has been looking for a big platform for her work, she is happy with her life exactly as it is and is extremely present- I always describe her and her husband, Gaz, as ‘the real deal'. Having said that, Shannon and Gaz, who is also in this type of work, have recently been called to begin sharing their gifts on a broader scale. Recording this podcast episode was a big step for Shannon as she has never ‘gone public' with her Mediumship. So far, all of her clients have come to her through word of mouth. While Shannon says that she hasn't received a lot of resistance to her work as she's kept it quite quiet, I am aware that there are people who do not align with the idea that our spirits can leave our physical bodies after our time on earth has expired- let alone that there are people on this planet who have tapped into their capabilities to communicate with those spirits. It can open up a BIG can of worms. But while there are many people who are resistant to these beliefs, I have also encountered many who are Medium-curious. I've heard questions like; How does it work? What makes a ‘good' medium? Does everyone have intuitive abilities? (According to Shannon, the answer to the final question is a resounding ‘yes'!). This episode Is for you if you want to better understand Mediums and their process. It will definitely help you to see this work in a new light while empowering you to tap into your own intuition! About Shannon Wright: Shannon Wright has always been an avid traveller and it was during her time exploring New Zealand in her camper van with her adopted dog, Jane, that Shannon Wright met the love of her life, Gareth (Gaz), who helped her to open up her deeper understanding of herself and what this existence is really all about. She felt their meeting to be a universal realignment to help her realize what it was she was seeking. A deeper connection and understanding of what is. Over the following years of personal development, yoga, meditation, and pregnancy/new motherhood she began to unfold what she realized was a connection to her soul self and the spiritual realm within which we live. She has been expanding her understanding of this innate human ability to speak with spirit /passed loved ones. She believes being connected to spirit is something we are all capable of doing, it is just a matter of bringing ourselves back to it. Naturopathic medicine has been one of the most powerful modalities I have experienced on my healing journey. I love naturopathy because it is a beautiful bridge between my self-healing practices and conventional medicine. The most beneficial part of working with a Naturopathic Doctor is that they look at the human as a whole; how the body is functioning as whole, which includes emotional and mental wellbeing. I first met my guest, Dr. Denise Handscomb ND in 2016, about a year into my diagnosis with MS. I had met with multiple specialists by this point in both the fields of Gastroenterology and Neurology for management of my Crohn's & MS. Interestingly, the specialists I had seen had never tied my diseases together, other than noting that they were both Autoimmune. I understand that specialists are just that, highly educated and specialized in one area of the body or disease state, but I truly appreciated Dr. Denise's approach to treating me as a whole human. I feel I was meant to meet Dr. Denise on my healing journey as she has educated me so much about my body as well as my conditions. Today's podcast is for anyone who is interested in Naturopathy or looking for an alternative path to begin their healing journey! Dr. Denise shares her ‘why' behind becoming a Naturopath, how she works with conventional medicine practitioners, and easy tips to start you on your healing journey today! Key Takeaways: It's all about balance – if you have a good foundation, you can indulge here and thereNaturopathic Doctors love to work as a team with Conventional MDs Gut health is everything!
I have been on both sides of the spectrum when it comes to feelings and fears around childbirth. Growing up, I played into society's fearmongering about the immense pain of labour and delivery. It was a real problem for me because I knew I wanted children, but there was a dark cloud looming over how I would ‘deliver' them earth side. As a teenager, I used to nervously joke that when I ‘grew up' and was having my children, I wanted to be put to sleep for the births to avoid all pain. Today, that scenario couldn't be further from what I want/wanted. When I actually ‘grew up' and got pregnant, it was after my humbling diagnosis Multiple Sclerosis. I was already much more in touch with my body, it's rhythms and my natural healing capabilities, which led to my preference for an unmedicated birth with minimal intervention – and that's exactly what I got! Listen in for our unplanned, 3-hour home birth story and why I decided to become a Doula after my incredibly empowering experience. Key takeaways· Important: an empowered birthing experience doesn't mean a ‘natural'/unmedicated birth, it just means the birthing person, feels seen, heard and supported during their birth · If you're pregnant, eat your dates! · The postpartum period is an adjustment and it's not always easy; knowing that is important.
One of my biggest fears around sharing my journey and starting ‘Mind Your Own' was that I would come across as ‘anti-medication' – or that my belief systems around mindset-work would be taken the wrong way for people who are ill and reliant on pharmaceuticals. This is definitely not the case. I have immense respect for the medical profession. So many people in my life have received life-saving pharmaceuticals and treatment for serious health concerns. The medications for MS, specifically, are instrumental for many people who have the disease to regain function – which I am so grateful for. I do believe, however, that taking medication is not the only thing we need to do to improve our health outcomes. We must be active participants in our healing- which is what this episode is all about! In this episode, I introduce you to Meagan Hardy. Meagan is a wonderful example of someone who has taken her healing into her own hands, in combination with the medication she takes every day that keeps her alive. Meagan Hardy was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age eight. Having lived with a dis-ease most of her life, she has gone through many stages in how she has managed the illness; beginning with avoidance and eventually leading to education and acceptance. Meagan believes in holistic alternative lifestyle approaches to compliment Western medicine which has made a real difference for her. Recently she co-founded a company called Clean Beauty Forum- an online health community for women to share information and experiences in relation health, wellness & clean beauty. I'm so excited for you to hear Meagan's story! Key Takeaways:· Empowered action towards better health, in combination with Western Medicine is key · Your work should not make you sicker · Talking about our health with our peers is a game-changer
