Welcome to The Rose and Rockstar - with the Chief Troublemaker at Seventh Bear, fractional marketing leader and author Robert Rose, behind the bar serving one of his splendid cocktails while our host Ian Truscott, a CMO but not a rockstar, picks his brain on a marketing topic.  This week, Ian and Robert discuss an idea Robert shared in his Content Marketing Institute column about slowing down marketing.  The main points from the bar this week: The idea of vibe marketing  Speed in marketing often correlates with quantity, not quality Slowing down marketing advocates for thoughtful and strategic approaches. Checkboxes and agile marketing methodologies can lead to a loss of creativity Marketing should prioritize thoughtful processes over rapid execution The integration of AI should enhance creativity, not replace it Successful marketing often comes from iterative processes, not just quick wins Do you have a question for the bar? What if internet trolls could become your greatest collaborators? Nolen Royalty discovered this unexpected truth when his simple checkbox game went viral. It began with a school email prank that crashed servers but sparked a philosophy: creative constraints breed innovation. From "Flappy Dird" to "One Million Checkboxes," Nolen built games that turned limitations into playgrounds. But when his checkbox project became a battleground of organized chaos, Nolen faced a choice: suppress the chaos or lean into it. Discover how systematic constraints can channel creative anarchy - and why one developer now believes the best user experiences emerge when you code for controlled chaos of strangers meeting on the internet. In this episode, Dave and Jamison answer these questions: Marcus Zackerberg asks, I work at a megacorp whose recent focus has been on reliability. The company already has mature SLO coverage outage response standards, but my org has taken it to the extreme this year. For example… There is now a dashboard of “service health” that is reviewed by engineering leadership. In it, services are marked “unhealthy” permanently upon a failing check (think HTTP /health). To return to a “healthy” state, one must manually explain the failure with an entry in a spreadsheet, which must be reviewed and signed off. Increasingly I feel this has the opposite effect, discouraging nuanced work to improve reliability and instead becoming “checkbox driven development”, as well as impacting our ability to ship on our existing roadmap items. Additionally, our tech lead is fairly junior and frequently fails to communicate the org's expectations to the team, leading to us being under the gun of the reliability dashboard often. Any advice on how to make the best of this situation? Hi Guys! I'm a senior engineer at a mid sized software company. The company has had a couple of high level departures recently, and during that process I've come into the knowledge that my name is one of a handful on a list of “engineers to keep happy”. I feel like this information should be of use to me, but I'm unsure on how I should leverage it. On one hand it's nice to know I'm valued, but I think I'd rather be explicitly told that or better yet, receive dollars in lieu of praise. I'm also at the point in my career where I'm looking for staff roles, and the topic of promotion has come up several times with my manager. He supports me (and I believe him), but we agree that it would be difficult to make the case to the business. What do I do with this new knowledge, and is there a way to benefit from it without accidentally triggering a preemptive search for my own replacement?

Dani Coleman is the Director of Training and Head Trainer at Pvolve, a science-led workout method that combines low-impact functional fitness with resistance-based equipment. She trains none other than Jennifer Aniston, as well as all of us who join in studio or through the Pvolve app. Dani's story is rooted in her biracial identity as both Japanese and Caucasian, which she recognizes is both a place of privilege and a place of isolation. I think anyone raising mixed race kids like my family is will really appreciate hearing about Dani's experiences and challenges. As an example, her parents supported her love of dance, which isn't typical of Asian cultures, but they required academic excellence, which many Asians and immigrants can relate to. Dani is passionate about supporting underserved AAPI communities, especially in light of her anger around anti Asian hate crimes — an anger I share, which inspired this entire podcast to begin with. We talk about the necessity of going beyond that token diversity card and actively calling in different identities. We share our observations about the fitness and wellness industries, where we see that things are getting better but we also recognize that there is still much more to be done. How involuntary family separation during her international migration awakened a complexity systems thinker to the illusion of safety in institutions and an even deeper need for people to listen to and understand contextNora Bateson has been working in complexity systems thinking for almost her entire career - focused on helping people and organizations contextualize complexity in order to solve challenging problems. So when she experienced the negative limitations of institutions that focused solely on procedure and stripped context from a decision making process, she knew she had to tell her story. In this episode she speaks up, not just for her family, but also for so many immigrant families whose experiences are absent from the polarized public dialogue that no doubt has significant influence over politics, policy and procedure. After moving to Sweden for love, Nora found herself and her family in an incredibly tragic and frustrating institutional process that denied her daughter entry into the country where her family resided because of her age, a number on a checkbox on the form to enter the country. As Nora mentions, this conversation is about much more than just her own experience. It's about identity politics, about who has the right to call a place "home", about empathy that stretches across socio-economic and national identity categories, about losing faith in a system that you thought was designed to support you, about the deep sadness of not being able to have the context of your situation heard in the midst of a life altering decision, In this episode, we explore the negative impact of objectivity and taking things out of context on polarization and reductionist thinking, our deep need to be seen not just as one identity or category but in our whole complex selves, and the importance of not only understanding the broader narratives surrounding an experience but the history of those narratives in shaping the stories we collectively create about that experience. Awhile back Aidan Baron (@Aidan_Baron) tweeted, "If you can't explain the pre-test probability, then you don't get to pick up the ultrasound.. no stats-no scan."    This got me thinking about the way we approach testing in the pre-hospital setting. Are we performing EKG's, POC Labs, Ultrasound scans, and screens on patients just because we need to check off a box on our PCR, or do we truly believe the pre-test probably is high enough to justify the test?   My thought process had always been that this is a way of triaging your mental bandwidth, and that it was only applicable when seeing more than just one patient. A physician, PA, or NP could not physically perform every test on every person without complications and decreased attention to top tier priorities.   In this podcast Chip Lange from TOTAL EM, and I discuss if pre-test probability and risk stratification is applicable to EMS.   www.foamfrat.com

He explains how Bootstrap literally insists that we make our code accessible, and how sensible it is to just that. We learn the importance of Form Groups, and how Checkboxes and Radio Buttons are a slightly different type of input to a form and so have their own Bootstrap class. It's great fun and the challenges look like fun too. At the end of the episode I added what Bart likes to call a Palate Cleanser. I've been following a woman named Samantha Ming on Twitter and samanthaming.comw where she posts fun little CSS and HTML tricks. I learned how to make the caret on an input field blink in pink, and how to make regular HTML text on a web page be editable. Bart's tutorial for this episode is available at bartbusschots.ie/...

Bart and I may have broken a record on Chit Chat Across the Pond this week. We went through so much material in Programming By Stealth that this show runs 100 minutes! The funny thing is that I wasn't ever bored, it was all really interesting. We started by going over last time's JavaScript challenge where I made some mistakes but node.js saved me so I didn't realize I'd entirely missed the point. I'm still getting the hang of that object thing. The we learned one final new concept related to JavaScript prototypes: static functions. The we finished that we went over to the html side and learned how to make forms, checkboxes and radio buttons. Not nearly as mentally challenging as JavaScript to be sure, especially since you can see the changes right on screen when you mess with them. Speaking of messing with them, Bart teaches us how to use jQuery to find out what our buttons and checkboxes say and to change them. He does this all with particular attention to using ARIA to ensure our html is accessible. As always you can find his excellent tutorial to follow along at pbs.bartificer.net/...
