Parisa Tabriz is vice president and general manager for Google Chrome, the world's leading browser platform. She leads efforts to make Chrome a secure and essential enterprise workspace, integrating AI and advanced cybersecurity to meet evolving business needs. In this episode, Parisa joins Bob to explore how Chrome is redefining the browser as a productivity and security platform, the role of AI in enterprise protection, and what's next for Chrome's innovations.Chrome at Google Cloud NextThe Big Themes:Chrome's Evolution into a Central Productivity and Security Platform: Over the past 17 years, Chrome has transformed from a simple web browser into a comprehensive platform integral to enterprise productivity and security. Users now spend a significant portion of their workday within Chrome, utilizing it for tasks ranging from document editing to video conferencing. This shift has positioned Chrome as the new endpoint in enterprise environments.Simplifying Enterprise Security with Chrome: Complexity is often the enemy of security. Chrome aims to simplify enterprise security by integrating protective measures directly into the browser, reducing the need for multiple, potentially conflicting security solutions. Features like automatic updates, built-in phishing protection, and centralized policy management allow IT teams to maintain a secure environment with less overheads.Personalization, Governance, and AI Empowerment: Chrome prioritizes features that allow organizations to personalize user experiences while maintaining strict governance over data and AI usage. Tools like data masking, controlled copy-paste functionalities, and the ability to designate approved AI applications help prevent data leaks and ensure compliance with internal policies. By providing these controls, Chrome empowers enterprises to harness the benefits of AI technologies responsibly. The Big Quote: ". . . the browser is the place where you can give people access to the benefits [of AI], but also make sure that you have the controls and governance to turn it off or make sure that your employees aren't copying and pasting data into an unsanctioned AI surface."More from Parisa Tabriz and Google Chrome:Connect with Parisa on LinkedIn or learn more about Google Chrome.

Years before co-founding Glean, Arvind was an early Google employee who helped design the search algorithm. Today, Glean is building search and work assistants inside the enterprise, which is arguably an even harder problem. One of the reasons enterprise search is so difficult is that each individual at the company has different permissions and access to different documents and information, meaning that every search needs to be fully personalized. Solving this difficult ingestion and ranking problem also unlocks a key problem for AI: feeding the right context into LLMs to make them useful for your enterprise context. Arvind and his team are harnessing generative AI to synthesize, make connections, and turbo-change knowledge work. Hear Arvind's vision for what kind of work we'll do when work AI assistants reach their potential. Shay Banon is the Founder and CTO of Elastic (NYSE: ESTC) the open source leader platform that enables enterprise search, observability, and cybersecurity. On today's episode, Jon Sakoda speaks with Shay on his path to starting Elastic, and his success building a commercial open source company in the era of cloud providers:Learn To Overcome Fear and Embrace the Future [6:10- 8:43] - Shay was diagnosed with a rare and incurable kidney disease at a very young age. He was told he might not live a normal life and his condition could change at any moment. He has learned to overcome day to day fear and to embrace the future. Why Google Didn't Win in Enterprise Search [17:24- 19:50] - In 2010, Google was a public company and everyone assumed they would win the war for search. But the enterprise market was different, and Elastic ended up being successful due to their focus on unlocking knowledge from diverse data stores. Google eventually exited the market and transitioned customers to products built on Elastic. How to Compete with Cloud Providers [27:50-33:16] - Amazon famously copied Elastic's search service and launched a competing cloud offering called Amazon ElasticSearch. Elastic fought back by changing its open source licensing to defend its IP, and is now a partner to Amazon. This form of licensing is now commonly used by open source companies.

Things You'll Learn:Medicare Advantage is the perfect example of how to provide health equity, as it gives money and resources to prevent illness and treat illness in a personalized manner.Decentralizing care can make clinicians more efficient and help them perform at the top of their license with the help of technology and analytics. The current hospital experience could be more efficient and scary, but it can be fixed using different tools and models of care.Organizations like Clover must ensure everybody gets access to the care they need, taking into account their social, economic, and environmental factors.Structural barriers, such as the structure of insurance and societal values, often create a disincentive to providing care to those who need it most.Everyone can be part of health equity by taking care of themselves first.Hospitals should be places where we go for certain aspects of our healthcare, not all of them. Anyone working in a large organization has likely asked this question: Why is it that I can seemingly find anything on the internet but I can't seem to find anything inside my organization? It is counter-intuitive that it's easier to organize the vast quantity of information on the public internet than it is to organize the smaller amount of information inside a single organization. The reality is that enterprise knowledge management and search is very difficult. Data does not reside in easily organized forms. It is spread across systems which provide varying levels of access. Knowledge can be fleetingly exchanged in communication systems. And each individual person has their own access rights, creating a complex challenge. These challenges may be amplified by large language models in the enterprise which seek to help people with analytical and creative tasks by tapping into an organization's knowledge. How can these systems access enough enterprise data to develop a useful level of understanding? How can they provide the best answers to each individual that follows data access governance requirements? To answer these questions, we talked with Arvind Jain, the CEO of Glean, which provides AI-powered workplace search. Glean searches across an organizations applications to build a trusted knowledge model that respects data access governance when presenting information to users. Glean's knowledge models also provide a way for enterprises to introduce the power of generative AI while providing boundaries for its use that can be challenging to create.Prior to founding Glean, Arvind co-founded Rubrik, one of the fastest growing companies in cloud data management. For more than a decade Arvind worked at Google, serving as a Distinguished Engineer, leading teams in Search, Maps, and YouTube.About Sonder Studio:We created Sonder Studio to empower humans in our complex age of machines, data, and AI. In the quest for knowledge at work, it can be tempting to think that finding what you need is like a needle in a haystack. But what if the haystack itself could show you where the needle is? That's the promise of large language models, or LLMs as they're known, and it's the subject of a this week's episode of NVIDIA's AI Podcast featuring Deedy Das and Eddie Zhou, founding engineers at Glean, in conversation with our host, Noah Kravitz. With large-language models, the haystack can become a source of intelligence, helping guide knowledge workers on what they need to know. Glean is a Silicon Valley startup focused on providing better tools for enterprise search by indexing everything employees have access to in the company, including Slack, Dropbox, and email. The company raised a Series C financing round last year, valuing the company at $1 billion. By indexing everything employees have access to in the company, LLMs can provide a comprehensive view of the enterprise and its data, making it easier to find the information needed to get work done. In the podcast, Das and Zhou discuss the challenges and opportunities of bringing LLMs into the enterprise, and how this technology can help people spend less time searching and more time working. https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2023/03/01/glean-llm-enterprise-search/
Deedy Das is a founding engineer at Glean, an enterprise search startup. Previously, he was a Tech Lead at Google Search working on query understanding and the sports product in New York, Tel Aviv, and Bangalore. Before that, he was an engineer at Facebook New York and graduated from Cornell University. Outside of work, Deedy writes on his blog. He published a viral resume template and his work on exposing grading flaws in the Indian education system. He also enjoys running marathons, road cycling, and playing cricket. Today we'll talk about the search projects he worked on at Google, why he left Google, his current work at Glean, and his thoughts on whether Google is doomed because of ChatGPT. Andrew Toy is the President at Clover Health (NASDAQ: CLOV), where he is responsible for driving the vision for how technology and analytics can improve the lives of Clover's members. Andrew joined Clover from Google, where he coordinated enterprise activities for the Android team and ran Machine Learning, Enterprise Search and Analytics for the G-Suite team. Before that, he was the CEO and co-founder of Divide, a company focused on creating a split between work and personal data on mobile devices, which was acquired by Google in 2014. He earned his BS and MS in Computer Science from Stanford. Highlights from the Show Clover Health is a health insurer focused on Medicare Clover's mission is to use technology to drive better health outcomes, therefore reducing the total cost of healthcare, allowing more people in more places to be covered The US is fairly unique in that healthcare is almost exclusively provided through an insurance mechanism, meaning there's a provider, a patient and a payer involved, complicating our ability to get efficiencies as a market The mechanism Clover is using to change outcomes is The Clover Assistant, which ingests different data points from all the various places and ways people get care to provide insights and advice to primary care physicians to help them in providing care to patients Clover does this without limiting patients to only certain providers, and they not only don't charge providers for access to Clover Assistant, but actually reimburse them at higher rates if they use Clover Assistant Because Clover is focused on helping the overall outcome, it allows them to make longer term decisions on spending on care because they realize, not paying for something today to save money may mean you spend much more tomorrow In P&C, if you don't have a burglarizing of a home today, that has nothing to do with whether you will or won't tomorrow, but healthcare is different since not providing care today can mean health is worse (and more costly) tomorrow Why is an insurer best positioned to solve this health issue? Insurers are incented to reduce total healthcare costs, so their incentives are aligned Insurers see all care, regardless of who provides it Insurers have the mechanism to spread health benefits because any savings in one area can be spread to other areas, broadening care For most commercial health insurers, they don't control members joining or churning since it's usually driven by people's employment, so it's not surprising commercial insurers would be less inclined to build what Clover is building because of their natural tendency away from long-term views This episode is brought to you by VPay (vpayusa.com), part of Optum Financial. BIO: Amit Somani is managing partner at Prime Venture Partners (PVP), a Bangalore-based, early-stage fund. For 20 years before this, he held leadership roles at Makemytrip (NASDAQ: MMYT), Google, IBM Silicon Valley Labs, and IBM Research. STORY: Amit's company came across this company that had a great product but didn't have a business model. Amit's company decided to back it anyway. It didn't go well. A few years later, they came across another company with a great product and a great team but, again, no business model. Having lost the first time, they decided not to back the second company. It went on to become a unicorn in three years. LEARNING: The same kind of analysis or rigor will not apply every time you're investing. Don't just extrapolate from a past pattern. Have repeatability in your investing process. “You can't borrow conviction; you have to get your own conviction because it's subjective.”Amit Somani Guest profilehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/thesomani/ (Amit Somani) is managing partner at https://primevp.in/ (Prime Venture Partners (PVP)), a Bangalore-based, early-stage fund. For 20 years prior to this, he held leadership roles at Makemytrip (NASDAQ: MMYT), Google, IBM Silicon Valley Labs, and IBM Research. Amit was part of the leadership team that took Makemytrip public on NASDAQ in 2010. He was also the head of various teams focusing on search, mobile, and advertisement products at Google. One of his products, the search-based keyword tool, even won the Google Founder's Award. Prior to his role at Google, he was the Director for the Enterprise Search and Discovery business at IBM San Jose, California. Worst investment everAmit's company was looking at a great company around 2015/16. It had a phenomenal product in the women's health space. They did their usual due diligence, spoke to the entrepreneur, and decided to back the company. However, one thing was missing, which was the lack of a viable business model. They decided it didn't matter as long as the company was building something that people love. Unfortunately, this was a big mistake. They should have thought a little bit harder about how the business model would come out or the ability of that team to manifest the business model. Things didn't work out well for the company. Fast forward a few years later. Amit's company met another fantastic company in the FinTech space. Again, there was no business model, but the product looked great, they had an incredible team, and the market was big in terms of the people they could serve. But still, no business model. Amit's company decided not to back this one due to the experience they'd had with the previous company. Then it went on to be a unicorn in three years. Lessons learnedThe same kind of analysis or rigor will not apply every time you're investing. You've got to factor in the timing and not overly pattern match because things change, markets change, dynamics change. Evaluate things from the first principle basis. You do not want to just extrapolate from a past pattern. As long as you have repeatability in your process, in your method, in your sourcing, and your checklists, overall, you're going to be just fine. Andrew's takeawaysThere's going to be a point where you're just going to have to make your play. Actionable adviceIn early-stage investing, you can't borrow conviction; you've got to get your own conviction because it's subjective. There's got to be something that's off the charts that should catch your attention. No. 1 goal for the next 12 monthsAmit's number one goal for the next 12 months is to launch his new fund and continue investing in a few new areas, including AI, crypto blockchain, and applying that to financial services and gaming tech. Simple tasks like finding data is a daunting task today due to data silos. According to IDC, workers spend 36% of their day looking for and consolidating information which translates to $5.7 million annually wasted by employees searching and not finding the correct file, and recreating existing content. Listen to this podcast to learn how Aparavi provides an immediate “Day One” ROI with its enterprise search features, by saving your organization millions in administrative time and freeing up your employees to work on more complex and more pressing issues.
As enterprise data sets continue to grow, how can you overcome data sprawl and data silos to find the information you need, quickly and efficiently? To manually search each storage repository for the correct file is time-consuming. You may even need to pay egress fees to retrieve data, that later turns out to be irrelevant or mislabeled. Aparavi brings together all your corporate data (whether cloud-based, hybrid environments or within a network) into a single user interface that anyone in the organization could use to search the context and metadata of your enterprise unstructured data quickly and efficiently. In this episode of the AI in Industry podcast, we interview Grant Ingersoll at Lucidworks, about enterprise search. Ingersoll talks about how companies have massive amounts of siloed data, making it difficult to find within enterprise systems. We hope businesses might take away from this interview what is required and what is involved in building search applications to make corporate data more accessible and structured. Ingersoll will also discuss how data strategies are going to evolve and how scientists and data experts might come together to build an enterprise search application.

Today we're talking about enterprise search from the open source perspective. Joining BA Insight CTO Jeff Fried for this conversation is Charlie Hull, director and co-founder at Flax and open source search specialist. From the importance of test-based relevance and tuning in search, to the drive to help administrative teams understand the critical role search can play in business efficiency, Charlie and Jeff share their perspectives on the new renaissance of the enterprise search space. What's more, Charlie introduces his new book, co-written with Udo Kruschwitz, Searching the Enterprise: Search has become ubiquitous but that does not mean that search has been solved. Enterprise search, which is broadly speaking the use of information retrieval technology to find information within organizations, is a good example to illustrate this. It is an area that is of huge importance for businesses, yet has attracted relatively little academic interest. This monograph will explore the main issues involved in enterprise search both from a research as well as a practical point of view. We will first plot the landscape of enterprise search and its links to related areas. This will allow us to identify key features before we survey the field in more detail. Throughout the monograph, we will discuss the topic as part of the wider information retrieval research field, and we use Web search as a common reference point as this is likely the search application area that the average reader is most familiar with.
