Safe spaces for genuine self-expression are crucial in combating depression, anxiety, and suicide risk. Body-centered practices like mindfulness and bodywork often surpass traditional therapy in helping men process emotions. A healthy masculinity balances strength with emotional openness. Cultivating both assertiveness and vulnerability fosters better relationships and self-awareness. Holistic approaches addressing physical, emotional, and social well-being are key to stress management and personal growth. Itunes Bio: Owen Marcus, founder of MELD (Men's Emotional Leadership Development), is a pioneer in men's emotional wellness with nearly 30 years of experience. His work, featured in major media and embraced by corporations like Google, focuses on transforming men's lives through innovative group dynamics and emotional awareness techniques. With expertise spanning corporate management, mindfulness, and integrated medicine, Owen continues to innovate in men's emotional growth through MELD, fostering emotional leadership and personal development in men. Men Need Connection: Both speakers emphasize that many men suffer from disconnection - from themselves, others, nature, and spirituality. This disconnection is the root cause of many issues, including mental health problems and suicide. Creating safe spaces for men to connect authentically with themselves and others is crucial for their overall well-being. Use Somatic Awareness to Access Emotions: Engage with your body to process emotions more effectively. Practices like mindfulness, bodywork, and physiological awareness can often reach deeper than traditional talk therapy for men. Redefining masculinity to include vulnerability: A new model of masculinity that integrates traditional "tough" qualities with emotional intelligence and vulnerability is imperative. Owen introduces the concept of "assertive vulnerability" as a way to balance these seemingly opposing traits. Holistic Practices for Stress Management and Personal Growth: Mark and Owen discuss various practices for managing stress and promoting personal growth, including mindfulness, time in nature, bodywork, and even medical interventions like the stellate ganglion block. The #1 most common mental issue most men face is mostly Depression. With Depression, there is a lot that could somewhat trigger it's impact on a man's life - from feeling lonely most of the time and even thinking about suicide and that could be from the result of self-narration. With the exclusion of the modern-day stigma on men's mental health, this episode will be mostly a "fadfada" (thinking out loud") type of episode where there are no professional tips or advice. This is just me talking about it... Big up to every man out there fighting their own battles!
Wellness + Wisdom | Episode 652 Why facing your fear straight on is the only way out of it? Dr. John Delony, joins Josh Trent on the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast, episode 652, to share the principles of living a non-anxious life, why winning won't make you well, how men can escape the hustle and grind lifestyle and lead with an open heart instead, and why there's power in vulnerability. "Fear is just an internal alarm system that your body sets off. And so when we give it more power and credence, when we stamp that label on our souls, it begins to dictate all of our actions." - Dr. John Delony

Welcome to the Against the Current Podcast! Today we're going to be discussing how and why male depression is being treated all wrong, and how should a man be treated when he is depressed. Big Idea: A man's sense of value directly comes from his ability to work. When that fails in some way, there is a ripple effect that damages, among other things, a man's mental health. Let's talk about men's mental health. Men are taught to keep quiet about their issues, button up, hide up problems, and even as victims of abuse, their own families tend to shove their issues under the carpet. Men are culturally not allowed to express their emotions as women do with tears, words, art, counselling and so on, many of them find alternative ways to dull their pain and some of these methods are self-destructive. Alcohol and drug abuse, Abusing others Addictions to porn and violent forms of entertainments Gangs, Rebel life, Crime: Vandalism, robbery, Trafficking people Just about anything that will dull the repressed anger and pain What are some hidden symptoms of depression, other than self-loathing, self harm, lack of self confidence? Looking super successful at work but being broken financially and emotionally Playing macho but feeling like a failure Undervaluing ourselves and not charging enough for our services Feeling unfulfilled and without purpose despite a splendid looking career Being unable to open up In this episode I interview Immigration Attorney Hèctor Quiroga. Hèctor grew up in Columbia where a series of events, including abuse, created all the triggers above. Even after creating what we could see as a dream career as an Attorney and Law professor, Hèctor continued to doubt his own capacities and keep all his emotional 'skeletons in the cupboard' locked in. This was partly because of the macho culture he grew up with. We will hear how Hèctor eventually overcame his emotional problems and created a truly gratifying life. Hector's fondest wish is to encourage others, especially men, to overcome their own emotional issues. The principles he shares in this audio and video podcast episode are available to you in his book, 'Prove them wrong'. Prove Them Wrong: One Immigrant's 10-Year Journey from Bankrupt to Millionaire is the inspirational story of an immigrant's pursuit of the American Dream – a trajectory fraught with unparalleled obstacles and exceptional triumphs. In the latest episode of the Simply Fit Podcast, I have the pleasure of speaking with Max Dickins. Max is an author, speaker and screenwriter. After proposing to his girlfriend, Max realised that he really didn't have anyone that he could call on to be his best man. He decided to dig deeper to find out where all of his friends had gone over the years and recognised that it wasn't just him who was having this problem, it was an enormous amount of men. A survey taken by Movemeber showed that a third of men have no close friends at all, which really gives us an eye opening look at this problem. In this episode you can expect to learn: Why not having close friendships can be a problem even if your life is going well in many other areas. Why women tend to be far more effective at maintaining friendships. Along with many steps you can take to deepen the relationships with your friends and find new ones too. Often men keep from being vulnerable by being vague, especially about feelings. Feelings are avoided because they are confusing or hard to identify. Men often aren't encouraged to talk about their feelings. In fact, they're sometimes discouraged from doing so. Additionally, men often tend to shy away from vulnerable conversations. This cultural expectation can easily make things more difficult for men in relationships.
I've been fairly candid about my own, ongoing work with counselors, historically, and today. My current counselor really got deep with me into my relationship with myself and recommended a book called “I Don't Want to Talk About It: Overcoming the Secret Legacy of Male Depression,” by a therapist named Terry Real. I got it and read it and it opened up a whole new level of understanding myself. Terry just recently put out a book called US: Getting Past You and Me to Build a More Loving Relationship. My therapist got it and right away said, “Kevin, I want you to get this book.” I did. It revealed aspects of how I behave unhealthfully in relationships that are nothing less than revolutionary for my life. As an individual, spouse, parent, and more. And bigger picture, how we culturally live as “you and me” and individuals when the bedrock of our being is relational and us. It will either wow you as it did me, or you'll have to fully dismiss it. And I don't think you will. I then went to find out who this guy is and found this book US was was published by Goop press, which is founded and owned by famed actress and client of Terry's, Gwynyth Paltrow. Same with actor Bradley Cooper who emphatically endorses Terry. But then people like famed psychotherapists Esther Perel and Lori Gottliev I find are touting Terry and this book us. And interestingly, the forward is from one of Terry's patients. The forward alone rocked my world. It's by a singer you may have heard of. Bruce Springsteen. But it's not the celebrity component that impresses me, it's the humble and heartfelt words they shared about their life changes. Bruce said, “At age thirty two I hit an emotional wall and realized I was lost in a deep dark forest, largely of my own making without a map. So began forty years of trying to find my way through the shadowed trees, down to the river of a sustaining life. Terry Real has been a guide and this book is a map through those trees. I agree. As bestselling author Terrence Real says, if the person who cheated on you is willing to get real and do the work, you're a fool to leave. But if they are unwilling to take accountability and change, then you're a fool to stay. Not much is harder than figuring out how to love your partner in all their messy humanness—and there's also not much that's more important. The good news: Warmer, closer, more passionate relationships are possible if you have the right tools. In his transformative new book, “Us: Getting Past You and Me to Build a More Loving Relationship” bestselling author Terrence Real brilliantly observes how our individualistic, winner-takes-all culture infiltrates affair recovery with devastating results Top Take-A-Ways: Avoiding “The 5-Losing Strategies” of Relationship Recovery: Proving you are right Controlling your partner Unbridled self-expression Retaliation Withdrawal How to trade in a “power and control” model of relating for a “relational model” so you can cultivate calm when triggered, remember love, and speak, act, and behave in ways that make relationships better – even when you've been betrayed. Understanding and maintaining the “biosphere” of your relationship, so both partners can win, thrive, and transform despite difficulty Working with the partner you have, and not the partner that you deserve in order to create the relationship you want Terrence Real is the bestselling author of “I Don't Want to Talk About It: Overcoming the Secret Legacy of Male Depression” and “How Can I Get Through to You?: Reconnecting Men and Women.” He has been a practicing family therapist for more than twenty years and has lectured and given workshops across the country. In March 2002, he founded the Relational Empowerment Institute. I will never forget the day I was in my therapist's office sharing about how my anxiety was through the roof. I was grieving the death of my father, saddened by my mother's cancer diagnosis, and fearful that my husband's business would have to close its doors. I was the epitome of “down and out” in my life and marriage. My therapist had the ability to show deep compassion but also called me out on my denial when necessary. She said, “Molly, you need help and I think you should begin with the book Fierce Intimacy by Terry Real."Terry's “say it like it is” attitude, transparency around his own marriage, and tips and tools, have literally saved my marriage and my soul. After listening to today's episode I believe your relationships will also benefit from his ability to teach about communicating, not from the adaptive child but the wise adult.I'm so grateful that Terry not only said yes to being a guest on the podcast but said yes during a very busy time in his life with his new book, US: Getting Past You & Me to Build a More Loving Relationship, releasing on June 7th. It was this “yes” that brought forth an interview where we talked about how to be a present life partner and a loving parent. He opened up about how his abusive childhood could turn into anger and grandiosity, but with deep internal work, it is now intense love and compassion for himself and others. And that he wrote his latest book to help us all remember how we can transform when there is unity and connection in relationships versus separation and disconnection. Terry is an internationally recognized Family Therapist, Speaker, and Author. Terry founded the Relational Life Institute, offering workshops for couples, individuals, and parents with a professional training program for clinicians wanting to learn his RLT (Relational Life Therapy). Terry is the best-selling author of I Don't Want to Talk About It: Overcoming the Secret Legacy of Male Depression, The New Rules of Marriage: What You Need to Make Love Work, Fierce Intimacy: Standing Up to One Another with Love, and his latest book US: Getting Past You and Me to Build a More Loving Relationship. His ideas on men's issues and couple's therapy have been celebrated in venues that include Good Morning America, The Today Show, 20/20, Oprah, and The New York Times. When I look back 10 years ago, sitting in my therapist's office really struggling in my life, I know for sure that today I am a better wife, a less anxious human, and a more compassionate mom thanks to Terry Real. There is no redeeming value in harshness- nothing good can come from this, that loving firmness can't do better. This is foundational to the work that internationally recognized family therapist, Terry Real, presents to so many of his clients. Whether it is to your partner, or yourself, practicing loving firmness is what can bring us to a place of US, moving us past individualism that separates us from each other, ourselves, the world. In US Terry, reveals how individualism and patriarchy poisons our most intimate relationships. but offers this excellent news: warmer, closer, more passionate relationships are possible if you have the right tools. In this episode, Terry shows people how to stop working on themselves as individuals and start working on their relationship as a couple, brining opportunity for relationship saving vulnerability and a deepening intimacy that is worth fighting for.Meet Terry!Terry Real knows how to help people create the connection they desire in relationships. An internationally recognized family therapist, speaker, and author, and the founder of the Relational Life Institute (RLI), Real has worked with thousands of individuals, couples, and fellow therapists. His groundbreaking, bestselling book, I Don't Want to Talk About It: Overcoming the Secret Legacy of Male Depression, established him as one of the most respected voices in the treatment of men and male depression. His expertise on men's mental health and relationship issues have been featured on Good Morning America, The Today Show, 20/20, The Oprah Winfrey Show and in The New York Times, among many others.Real is passionate about showing how the toxic cultures of individualism and patriarchy have seriously damaged our interpersonal relationships. Despite living in a world interconnected by globalization and technology, we are all more disconnected and isolated from each other than ever before. In his practice, Real works with couples on the brink of disaster; he sees how individualism and patriarchy poisons our most intimate relationships. Neurobiology shows that the mind exists in a social context, and couples co-regulate one another's nervous systems. But it's hard to get that delicate dance right if you, like so many people, grew up without adequate emotional support. The techniques you developed to survive a dysfunctional family as a kid—the very skills that probably bring you success in your career—will torch your relationships. US—the culmination of four decades of Real's clinical practice as well as teaching and writing about relationships, trauma, gender, and healing—is a groundbreaking guide to a new science-backed skillset. One that will allow you to get past your knee-jerk reactions and tap into your wiser, more collaborative self. Real shares the stories of couples whose relationships have been saved by these skills and pans out to the cultural landscape that reinforce our dysfunction. Using psychology, history, and stories of couples who have entered his office, Real helps readers move beyond their traumas and stressors and shift from thinking in terms of me and you to a different consciousness. In this joint episode, with my fiancee Dr. John Schinnerer, we talk through common pattern dynamics that we see in couples. It looks something like this: the man is feeling insecure and needs reassurance, for which he continuously reaches out to his partner, though the way he seeks reassurance and connection is through blame, shame or judgment. This in turn, pushes his partner further away, creating greater disconnection, the very opposite thing that he is seeking. John and I dissect these relational patterns with curiosity of what is the underlying problem. If you are in a relationship with these dynamics, you'll want to take a listen. Hey Man (or woman),Are you alive or are you somewhat turned off, numb, or somewhat apathetic? If so, you're not alone. You might be suffering from the under-diagnosed phenomenon of the covert male depression, as first described by Terrance Real.In this talk, taken from a webinar for therapists, I share my story of covert depression and detail how this covert depression begins through psychological patriarchy, how it evolves and manifests through a limited relational and emotional repertoire, and its long-term (negative) effects on their intimate relationships. Practical tips are given on how to engage and soften this depression.Click here to join our mailing list and get free resources on enriching relationships every month to your inbox.https://www.psychologytoday.com/intl/blog/the-other-side-relationshipshttp://podcast.potentialstate.com/https://www.youtube.com/c/ThePotentialStatehttps://www.facebook.com/ThePotentialStatehttps://twitter.com/assaelSupport the show (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=Q5AG6K7L8GYKA&source=url)

“Before our boys have learned to read, they have already read the stoic code of masculinity and are conforming to it.” says Terry Real, world-renowned family therapist, speaker, best-selling author and founder of the Relational Life Institute, where he offers workshops for couples, individuals, parents and therapists. He is also a dear friend. While he's best known for his couples work, decades ago, he wrote the landmark book on male depression, which I cannot recommend enough. It's called, I Don't Want to Talk About It: Overcoming the Secret Legacy of Male Depression, and with it, Real established himself as one of the most respected voices in the treatment of men and the healing of their relationships with the world. In this episode, we talk about why depression is “illegal” for men, the cultural programming of boys, and forced detachment in the name of autonomy. Our culture of individualism, Real says, has done as much damage as our culture of patriarchy—leaving men little room for the type of connection and relationality that we humans live for. He leaves us with the steps for deprogramming ourselves from patriarchal thinking and parenting as well as the ways in which we can support the men in our lives in service of deeper connection and the pursuit of greater relational joy. The six women discuss feedback they’ve received from episode one through five based on their discussions of “Women Who Run with the Wolves” by Clarissa Pinkola Estés. They also call themselves out on times they were insensitive and speak about their privilege. Most people don't like to talk about their mental health, but when it comes to young boys and men, it's an ongoing crisis. The coronavirus pandemic has heightened depression and anxiety among men. It is National Suicide Prevention Month, and studies show an increase in Black boys committing suicide. Stigma and judgment prevent Black and African-American people from seeking treatment for their mental illness. Joining Danita to tear down the judgment and kill the stigma and discuss male depression are Marie Lassiter Black, who lost her oldest son, Tyree Black, in 2014 to suicide, and Mor Rondo J. Roberts, a licensed independent social worker and therapist. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Incels have lately been getting a bit of traction in the media lately. There have been a lot of misconceptions and myths about them and we go into an objective breakdown of who the incel community is made up of and what they are all about. That doesn't mean that our discussion is all about sunshine, unicorn and rainbows though!Vito, co-host, discusses some of his own challenges and struggles being someone who identifies with being incel in the past. This discussion is impactful to the average man in that it touches on discussions about how we deal with our emotions in general. We discuss very openly our experiences with regard to our changing perceptions and beliefs and how they have evolved. There is a pretty hot discussion on how our community and society has evolved the way it has. So if you are an incel? What do you do? How do you improve your chances of finally finding the bond and connection that most of us are seeking? We attempt to offer some guidance on ways you can change your reality for the better.Disclaimer: We are not medical professionals or counselors so please consult with your medical professional or counselor before making any changes to your life routine.

Terry Real offers workshops for couples, individuals, and parents around the country along with professional training of the Relational Life Therapy method for clinicians through his Relational Life Institute. He also is the best-selling author of I Don’t Want To Talk About It, Overcoming the Secret Legacy of Male Depression, and his new book The New Rules of Marriage is out now. Today, he chose the topic of healing betrayal, the added challenges that addiction brings in to the situation, and the roadblocks that must be moved in order for real healing and change, and possibly even a transformed relationship better than it was before. TAKEAWAYS: [2:43] In order for it to count as infidelity, there needs to be two elements: a violation of contract and trust, and deceit. [5:14] The partner usually has two questions: how can you do this, and how can I know you won’t do this again? [5:47] The three phases that generally occur when coming back from infidelity: The Acute Phase - the partner is in a true state of trauma, blind fury, crisis, and shame. Everything they believe to be true has been pulled out from underneath them. The partner that has acted out needs to come clean, step up, and end all of whatever the involvements are. The Understanding Phase - what did the infidelity do to the betrayed partner, and what it meant for the betrayer. This is the phase where we assess the relationship, and look for narcissistic character traits that may have overridden loyalty and trust. Recommitment and Transformation - fix and transform the characters, and look at changing accommodation patterns there may be in the hurt partner and a realistic look at the relationship in all it’s positives and negatives. [11:38] Reassuring behavior will help to regain trust, and the need for it differs couple by couple. [19:42] The harmony phase is the innocent “love without knowledge” phase, the “knowledge without love” phase is the dissolution phase, which then flows into experienced love where you know what is at stake, but it is an informed choice to stay. [26:40] The same type of narcissism that gets the partner to betray in the first place, also keeps them from successfully being accountable and trustworthy to their partner in the healing stage. [29:44] Personal empowerment is based in individual power, and relational empowerment is to bring your full strength into the relationship. Traditional therapy has done a great job of providing clients with a warm, loving, compassionate environment to heal. Unfortunately, it falls short when it comes to bringing up difficult truths to people when that is necessary. In this episode, Terry Real talks about the three phases of his model, Relational Life Therapy (RLT), the first of which is joining through the truth. In this way he begins the process of creating quick, profound change in the individuals and couples he works with. During the conversation we get into stance-stance-dance, empowering the latent, using a lot of pause, grandiosity, inner child work, and many of the other aspects of Terry's model for couples therapists (RLT). Terry Real is a leader in the field of couples therapy. He has written 3 books which are linked below, numerous articles, and has been featured in countless interviews with media outlets. He is the founder of the Relational Life Institute and continues to work with couples as well as train therapists. For more information on his upcoming level one training click the link below. It is not unusual for me to be sitting across from a man in my therapy office as he relays to me the story about when he first learned that it was not okay for boys to cry. It is usually a very powerful moment. I have heard men of all ages and backgrounds tell this story. And though the characters and contexts are different, the take away message is always the same. It is not safe for men to show emotions. One of the more powerful moments came in my work with a man in his 70's as he recalled with tears in his eyes that incident 70 years earlier when his father told him to stop crying. That event was 70 years ago and it had a profound shaping affect on that man's understanding of masculinity and what defines it. I am super passionate about helping men identify their feelings. Because if a man can identify them, understand them, name them...have words and language for them...he often begins to not only understand himself better, but so do those people in relationship with him. He begins to own his own story in the words of Brene Brown in Rising Strong. And once he can begin to identify his feelings then we are off and running. He then learns to be able to connect those feelings to the negative coping behaviors that he has probably, and automatically, operated out of most of his life. And it's this awareness that I know eventually leads to powerful change for that man. For without the awareness, one cannot change. I've seen men's lives changed in this process and it has changed my life as well. So it's important to me to help you better understand why men have a hard time connecting to their emotions, and what role you may play in that for good or bad. In this episode I explore: our culture's pressure on men to not cry and to just "be a man." how boys are as equally expressive as young girls...but then why that changes. how a man can begin the process of identifying and connecting to his feelings/emotions what role the people in men's lives have in either perpetuating the belief that it's not okay for men to cry...or in helping create a safe place for men to be vulnerable. how to create a safe space for men to be vulnerable.
